~::~ Good Morning, Madams! ~::~
The ladies had awoken to that weird chime that echoed throughout the homestead, concerning them at first. When they realized no one was coming through their door, they eased down and decided to stretch about.
Sakura even thought she'd enjoy a morning sit outside on the balcony to get a little heat nestling on her skin. Of course the Elkin man came along and hit her with an obvious question that she could only assume meant that he wanted to know if she'd cleaned up her mess. She took it as a personal attack by him stereotyping her Orkan heritage because of how reportedly messy they could get. 'There goes my morning.' Or so she thought, for over by the entrance way, Hinata was giggling at something there with the door cracked open.
She was also sitting on her knees in a baggy shirt, sleeves overcoming her balled hands.
"Little sister?" She approached with caution to take a gander over Hinata and see there on the floor was a sack-fox being controlled by a pair of familiarly tan hands. It had a little chef hat strapped on about its round head between two stiff ears.
"Why, I see nothing funny about my size, madam! I am a full grown fox. Lord Kurama, the astounding chef on four legs... or two if I'm feeling generous."
Sakura blinked and covered her mouth to hide a snort from the ridiculously deep and posh voice the blond gave the small toy. Her Elkin friend couldn't contain her fit of mirth. It was the cutest thing she'd ever seen.
"The buffoon hiding around this corner is the one who deserves to be laughed at. He burnt toast for crying out loud." It's little arms were held to the sky as he made it drop to its knees in distress. "Toast, I say! It was a horrendous sight. I had to step in." Naruto made it jump back up and close it's stubs to its chest. "It is my sworn duty as a chef and as a gentle-fox."
The bow added was enough for Hinata to let out a soft, "Aaww."
Sakura shook that pink noggin from left to right, stepping closer to the door. "A gentle-fox, huh? And what of the man controlling you?"
"He is at best, a dish-washer. Should he ever touch food again, we'd all die from the mere sight of the presentation. It is appalling, I say! Appal- Oh! Erhm, heh… Good morning madam and little madam!" Naruto struggled to get up off the floor when Sakura came out with her fist to her hips and a quirked brow down at him. He then fiddled with the toy in his hand and smiled nervously. "Um, breakfast, right! I've come to fulfill my promise."
"Did you think we would not budge without the puppet show?" She teased him of course and enjoyed the pause filled reaction.
"Ah well, you see… I was really wanting… to… to make the morning a little easier for you both."
"I-I liked it." Hinata mumbled from the safety of the room still around the corner.
Naruto let that sprinkle of red on his cheeks show as did his smile that kind of stayed without his knowing. "I'm glad to not be a bother then."
"No one ever said you were," Sakura reminded him, afraid she might have come off too serious.
"Then I am truly relieved."
He had a ridiculously high sincerity that made her feel relaxed and then some. "Sure…"
"Food?" Hinata didn't understand what was up with Sakura, but she wanted to eat again.
And Naruto was ready to oblige. "Oh yes, this way please. For the record though, you both look stunning. Isn't that right, Kurama?" He sat the toy fox on his shoulder and made it bob it's head while he talked out the corner of his mouth, "The epitome of perfection!" He then held out a hand to help the snickering, quieter woman off the floor.
Hinata accepted the kind gesture with a deep blush after she merely touched his palm. There was so much emotion in this man she could feel all at once that it nearly made her want to cry. The strange thing was, she didn't know why she could sense this with him so much more than anyone else. There was pain, anger, hate, fear, self-loathing, and above all else, love. Compassion in complete darkness where it should not be for someone so pint up with rage never expressed. It was almost like two people were in this man and it was too much for her all at once.
She snatched her hand back and hid behind Sakura, mumbling her apologies thereafter. "I'm I-... I'm sorry."
Naruto faked embarrassment well, scratching the back of his blond spikes. "Ah, don't let it trouble you any. I'm sorry for scaring you. I didn't mean to hold your hand that hard."
"I'm sure it'll be alright." Sakura said no more on the situation in case something else was going because he barely even touched her actually. "I think we're ready to eat more than anything else."
"Ah, of course, getting off topic," Naruto cursed under his breath, "We'll head on off then. Onward!" He led them down back from whence they came past the front entrance, taking it slow to allow them to gander and build up questions while he informed them of the estate's owner, "Lord Iruka has arrived recently. I trust you heard the home's little gleeful sound. It's reason for being will be explained on the tour that he will also be joining us for after a bite of the mornings course. You'll both love him. I swear on my life."
"And what of the charming Elf-man?" Sakura let that sarcasm drip from her tongue boldly.
"What of me?"
It was Hinata who shrieked at the voice not too far behind them, leading her to scurry in front of the glaring Orc woman. She shared the same expression as the raven walked on past them in the same get up from the night before unlike the blond man who looked ready for a joyful ride.
"Sasuke, you made it! How are the horses? Did they miss us?" Naruto was ignored for the most part and his brotherly invite for a hug was left wide open and hanging. "Sasuke?"
"We have work to do later, Naruto. Save your gossip for the tour."
"Wah? Are you not going to join us?" He frowned at the dismissive man.
"What for?" Sasuke remarked dryly as he rounded the corner and went on his way, cutting his eyes to the emeralds who he'd started a very compromising feud with. "Hurry up."
'What is his problem all of a sudden?' Naruto turned to apologize anyway when he was sure Sasuke was far off. "I do apologize for my friend's-"
Sakura stopped him right there with a lift of her hand and a shake of her head for him to save it. There was no need to state something so obvious. "We're the real bother here, Naruto. You don't have to apologize in his place for that. We'll be gone soon… Just give us some time, please."
"But you're not any trouble at all and he feels the same! He's just- I… Are you sure his behavior won't bother you both too much?"
"Mm." Hinata nodded, holding her friend's forearm affirmatively and in total agreement.
"We are sure. There are so many good things to focus on." Sakura softly smiled and looked down for a second to say, "We thank you for everything though. Last night was rough but it was… one of the best nights we've had since we were children so we can't be grateful enough."
To Naruto, he understood the feeling of needing a safe place and a satisfying meal all to well upon coming from hell. "Think nothing of it. Doing the right thing is far and few in between during these times… And Sasuke, he's one of the good ones, I swear. You've just got to get to know him and you'll see. He does a lot without saying anything. Right now he's really tired from yesterday because that drained a lot of his mana thanks to my requests. It's easy to use but it's a toll gaining it back so excuse him for a while."
"Why doesn't he just take the day off then?"
"Sakura, he doesn't even know what vacation means." Naruto gave them a good chuckle despite how serious he was. "To him, if he slacks even for a second, someone dies that he could have saved. A tragedy passes that he could have stopped. A wrong deal catches a bystander in the crossfire that he could have protected and so on."
She grasped the button overlaps of her shirt in the center of her chest and said, "That's a heavy burden to put on one's self, isn't it?"
Hinata agreed too. "There's no way to do that..."
"Well not if you look at it like that so quickly. Anything is possible as long as you work hard enough and believe in it to the fullest extent with all you've got." Naruto showcased his own lack of knowledge in the term, 'impossible'. Might as well add 'quitting' to that list. "I mean, we've all got our shortcomings. In the end though, they can make us stronger or cripple us. I have faith in the former. We're only as weak as we believe and as strong as we need to be."
'He's just full of optimism, huh?' Sakura smiled at the truth, looking to Hinata to see she was uplifted some as well by his views. There was one other debatably kind, grumpy person who needed a boost this morning. "Naruto, I have a request if that's alright."
~::~ We'll Be Right Back ~::~
Here's the dilemma.
Taking care of a little feral and trying to maintain a stable income to keep one's family bank from running out, is hard.
Iruka didn't have time to babysit after a while when he received that notification that funds were low. The working life called him in to take care of other people's loved ones. He thus needed some help. Because he was born a half breed himself and not gifted with magical prowess, he had to find other means to achieve that life cheat.
He got this trick from the rogue woman he stayed in contact with those years ago.
It's called, a Medium.
These are inanimate things that hold mana, or magic, for use.
He'd taught his students this many times that magic can affect both the living and lifeless things. Thus necromancy gets its name. Of course he's not using a cadaver or something as disgraceful as that.
No, he had a book that was once a man. Why is that so? That is a tale for this afternoon.
At this moment, Iruka was fretting over how he ever did anything without that book. He'd used it to whip up quick meals for Naruto, morning cleaning, chore managements, and ect. Here he stood before the cupboards, dreading to even to look towards the ice-room. 'Did I even salt that meat I got from the market… or was it salted already? Is it still there?' He had a doubt for just about everything. 'The cobwebs look more healthy than the bread.' After a heavy sigh and a light bang of his head on the cupboard door, he questioned aloud, "When was the last time I actually went to the market?"
"Two weeks ago."
"Hm? Oh, Sasuke. There you are." He'd had years to get used to the raven's constant unintentional, quiet entrance to everywhere he went. Not hearing his voice was alarming on some days. "Has it really been that long?"
"It has. You usually buy in bulk so I understand why you're confused." Sasuke looked around the empty kitchen on his way to the cooler room, rolling his eyes at the burnt, wasted bread on the table. "Plus, it's spring. Whenever you work, you seem to get into this mindset that Naruto is still a child. Don't get me wrong though, I can see why." Upon popping open that centuries old fridge, all he saw that was hanging from the hooks were freezer burned sausage links. No matter if he and the Orc woman were at odds, he'd not allow this to be served so he shut it back and didn't bother to mention it. "Will you be at the college tomorrow?"
"I'm afraid so. I received a letter for it." He slipped the ivory, folded parchment right out of his vest's breast pocket. "Santou sent it himself personally. I take it the whole marriage situation was as much of a set up as we thought?"
"Where do you think those women came from?" He sounded frustrated but it wasn't towards their guests.
Iruka knew this anger in the raven's voice was typical when talking about the Ministers. "They are low enough to do that so that doesn't surprise me. Here I was hoping you'd just found them and rescued them still. Shame our glorious Emperor can't do anything about this trafficking."
It had only gotten worse over the years.
"Emperor Nara is far from clueless as you think."
Iruka begged to differ while he searched his pockets meanwhile for his coin pouch. "Then how come he's not responded to any of your request to investigate them?" This question had seen many seasons and never seemed to get a different answer.
"He is the Emperor, Lord Umino. There are five other states on his rein that he has to hear from." Sasuke had a pinch of uncertainty that never tipped on challenging his loyalty. After all, it was that man that gave him a home and the opportunity of a lifetime. "Till then we just have to endure our gracious Minister's presence."
"Ha, to do so on an empty stomach won't help us last." He bounced the brown, silver string bag in his hand on his way to the door. "I'll make a run to the market quickly for I fear Naruto must've gotten sidetracked and went off to fetch the girls too soon."
"I'll aid in your travel then."
"Oh Sasuke, you don't have to. Save your mana for something else."
The raven shrugged and went off to stand by the older man's side, a hand to his shoulder. "It's not a problem. Besides, letting Naruto suffer alone while he explains where the food is sounds like just punishment anyway."
Iruka chortled and shook his head. "I'm not sure if that's cruel or justified."
'I hope it's both.' His eyes shifted a crimson and he brought up two digits laterally to his lips. Sending himself places was easy. Anything more than that required extra demonstrations like two or three fingers depending on the party being teleported, and initial physical contact. Speaking aloud was also required for those not to skilled in that yet. "Néos Orus."
With a puff of black mist, they were gone.
~::~ It Got Awkward For A Reason ~::~
Such a homey place deserved a modest dining area.
A polished wooden table set before their guest with a tribal pattern tablecloth draping off in the center and barely covering the ends. Alabaster candles were in the middle on silver trays and out of the way, lightless for the lengthy windows were providing illumination for the scene.
Hinata could wander around in comfort on the beige tiles without fear of the cold getting to her again. The ballet flats were her ground protectors. The man who lived in their room was apparently a pixie and very flamboyant. He rarely flew about and so the shoes were well broken in. She could move about as fluently as she wanted.
Naruto stayed a curious soul and marveled at those who shared that habit. He sat on the corner of the table near the head chair where five other seats were set around the lateral sides. With one leg down and the other hiked some, he rested a forearm on that elevated thigh and watched them wonder around the inviting room full of earthy colors like red, brown and green. The yellow that existed belonged to the drapes around the open floor length windows.
There was nothing that could measure up to the woman off in different levels of light.
The Elkin lass had a body type better suited for the night's light. She seemed more happy in the sun's rays however and he adored that wondrous nature of hers that made her press against the glass to look to the garden reminded him of nymphs, the shape shifting creatures of only the female sex whose sole purpose was to be alluring and elusive. To capture one so innocent or win their heart, was a nearly impossible feat.
Not that he wished to achieve such with someone he barely knew. It was an odd comparison he came to nonetheless. He believed he was destined to be alone so he had no hopes of romance of any form like his foster father did. He only wished to live a peaceful life…
He shifted his declining, happy gaze down when she caught him staring. He proceeded to pretend to fix his sleeves. 'Mind your manners!' he told himself, looking off to the side to distract himself only to see Sakura.
She braved the darker parts untouched by light with her arms wrapped around herself again. He wondered if she was cold or something. Then again, she also reminded him of Sasuke. He always walked a certain way like he was studying everything too. She appeared more relaxed and easy going.
Naruto therefore, had no fear of scaring or bothering her too badly if he addressed her. "Do you like those clubs? They are straight from, Guerrier. Which I believe is your kind's home state, right?"
"You are correct but… how'd he get this?" Sakura didn't touch the wooden, broad weapon crossed with its twin. The bands had those triangles in reverse directions again. She saw that pattern more in the cloth on the table. "Is he an Orc as well?"
"Sort of. He's half."
"What else is he then?"
"You wouldn't believe me if I told you… or when you eventually meet him."
Her interest increased against her wishes and led her to notice some troubling things. "When will that be then? Where are the pictures of this man?"
Hinata nodded, positive her lily irises had seen every inch of every place they'd been shown. She closed her hands together at her chest and asked quietly a question that made Naruto's smile flip, "Why are there so many chairs and r-rooms?"
He slowly shifted off that table to a more proper position with his hands behind his back in a soldierly manner. "That is because, madam… Lord Umino used to…" It hurt to speak of, knowing his type had a hand in it. "There were once many people living here you see and… He loved them very much. His mother, father, cousins, uncles, aunts, grandmother, and so on."
Hinata frowned and tilted her head to the side, confused as to why it was so quiet here then. "Where are they?"
The Orkan woman had figured it out seconds from that doleful downcast the blond did. She knew of a loud household and then the complete silence that followed once empty. This was not a time for her past however. "He removed their pictures then."
"It is custom I'm afraid." Naruto didn't agree with this go to about things when loved ones passed, but it was the Orkan way.
Hinata did know of that, having heard from her own close source that they'd never keep an image of family once gone. Twas' a thing the Orcs believed stopped the deceased from being able to pass over. Holding onto their weapons was more acceptable because they thought their loved one's spirit could be called into it to aid them in battle. The Elkin held no beliefs like this and did think them silly like most. "But he's h-half something else, isn't he?"
"He is, and less of it. How they tend to their dead is contradicting so his mother's wishes were followed because of a deal they made."
"And what was that?" Sakura hoped it would give her a hint to this Lord's other race.
There was clear discomfort when Naruto said, "Whoever took the ferry to the afterlife last would- I'm sorry, this is a bit morbid. I should get you all something to eat first. Give me a minute."
He'd hurried off so quickly that Sakura didn't get a chance to apologize for carrying on the subject. His hasty retreat was highly suspect though like he had a personal connection to an event he shouldn't have witnessed or did he? She didn't know their relationship and couldn't outright guess accurately from the little she knew. Digging to deep into it, also made her feel like she was being a bad guest. She was not alone however.
"H-He's hiding something." Hinata came over to whisper at her side.
"You think so?"
"Mm."
"Then all of them are." Sakura gave the seemingly innocent room a once over, noting the two exits. "I'm not sure we should find out either."
"We leave sooner then?"
"We're sure as hell going to try. Till then, we keep our distance and behave accordingly. Agreed?"
Hinata bobbed that clean head once. "Mm!"
"Excuse me, madams." Naruto popped out from around the kitchen doorway, embarrassed smile crinkled on his lips. He did startle them this time. "Ah, sorry again. I just remembered that I did not correct my blunder with breakfast and we might have to go out."
"That's fine if we can do that thing for the knight beforehand?"
"Oh that! We should take care of it now." Naruto held open the door for them, high spirits returned. "Are you sure it'll work though, madam?"
Sakura smiled and petted her evidence beside her. "This one loves it."
The Elkin woman got all flushed and grumbled with a defeated sight. "I-It works."
~::~ Sweeter Than... ~::~
In a poof, Sasuke and Iruka were back where they were with bags of food.
The scenery had changed though.
Burnt toast was now discarded somewhere and the plate it sat upon was suddenly clean. Three other bodies occupied the space and in questionable positions.
Hinata was under the cutting board table doing god knows what but she had something clutched in her fists.
The thing that bothered the raven unconsciously the most was how Naruto and Sakura were awfully close over there by the cupboard. He reacted in no way out of the norm and dismissed any strange emotion. He pretended to not care, setting the groceries on the counter. "Go back to the dining area so we can prepare something to eat."
"Wait, you guys went to the market? Without me?!"
Sakura quickly closed the cupboard when the blond turned away, occupied hands held behind her back swiftly. She got a bit nervous and flustered to see the raven eye her weird actions for a moment. 'Look at someone else for once!'
"Oh you'll be fine, Naruto. Good morning, madams." Iruka set his things down as well before addressing them more properly, recognizing their direct races right away. "I trust you've heard my name enough by now."
When Naruto stood right beside the welcoming home owner, Hinata could see the impact he'd had on the blond man as she slipped out from under the table. They almost spoke and even stood the same way. 'He must be human too.' She had a good reason to believe, for he was awfully tall. "H-Hello…"
"It's a pleasure to meet you!" Sakura couldn't say it fast enough, anxiety increasing from a pair of onyx that had not left her way.
That high pitch greeting and nervous rush of tone was what caused Sasuke to stab his knife into the board and turn to the soon to be accused, speculations confirmed. "What are you hiding?"
"Nothing?" This was her first mistake.
"How'd you know I was talking to you then?"
Hinata messed up next by slowly shifting her own palms behind her back, head held down to avoid his scrutinizing gaze. His presence was so much heavier over them both and only worsened when he got closer.
"Answer me."
"Sasuke, calm down. They haven't done anything." Naruto didn't want to give the surprise away so soon. "We were just looking for something to eat."
"Are you sure everyone was?" Sasuke would go out of his way to help, but trust is another ball park you need a ticket for. He learned that in training for the most part to be a knight, not a fool. That's two letters short and one doesn't pay well, or so that's what his mentor would say. By the gods did he hate and respect that woman who taught him well. "Show me your hands."
"It's not that serious though." Naruto words landed on uncaring ears. When the raven withdrew his sword, he felt that it was going too far. "Sasuke!"
"I don't think that's necessary." Iruka lifted a hand as well to unsure the raven to hold on a minute.
Poor Hinata shrieked and hid behind the annoyed Orkan woman, dropping lavender petals to the floor as she trembled.
That was enough for Sakura to get fed up and feel her own rage level rising. A quick glimpse to the bags around their hosts, stopped her from acting drastic. This was just a misunderstanding. So many secrets all at once and needlessly so. There was no need to add to it. She lowered her head once more for the day and revealed the mug held tightly in her hands and covered by a thin cloth. She presented it to the raven and feared to speak in case she ticked him off further.
Sasuke didn't know what to make of the shivering cup and the scared women behind it. "What is this?"
"It's lavender and honey tea. It… It helps- It'll h-help you relax." That was a stutter from Sakura out of a long line of ones to come because of him solely. "A thanks it is as well… We thank you."
Sasuke's shoulders dropped as the tension cleared and something akin to embarrassment overcame him that he never showed. His blond companion did not help the matter by draping and arm around him and broadcasting the obvious.
"You feel like a jerk now? Want to apologize? You know you should."
"Naruto." Iruka was sure he'd exhaled for the 1000th time in his life just now.
"It's fine, Lord Umino. He's.. He's right. I am sorry for misjudging you both." He increased their surprise with his less heavy tone and, taking the cup just to sit it to the side nearby on the table. "Please go to the dining area now and wait for us." He pulled Naruto's arm off of him next and rather harshly at that.
"Owww much!" The blond rubbed his wrists, grumbling.
Sakura was perplexed for he still didn't verbally accept the gift. He was making them something to eat however so that had to count for something. A push on her back made her quit her staring this time to blush and start excusing herself as requested with Hinata following close behind.
Once the women were gone, Naruto took to snapping on the raven for being so rude moments ago. "Why in all the lands did you do that?!" he asked as quietly and infuriatingly as he could. "Are you trying to scare them off?!"
"Huh, you must want them to stay then?" He shot back calmly enough over his shoulder, busy sending mana into the kitchen knife. That silence was all he needed to hear. "Pathetic."
"Hey! A little extra company never hurt anyone! You could use another friend too. You pompous bastard-"
"Okay Naruto, why don't you go keep them company, hm? I'm sure they could use a good laugh right now." Iruka learned that separating them was the best approach. He guided his young, grumbling ward out with a comforting grip on his shoulders, closing the door quietly thereafter. "Well... that was not the meeting I'd hope to have with them first. Maybe I'll get to try again at breakfast. Will you be joining us, Sasuke?" He heard not a word, turning around to what he expected to have happened.
The strange knight was gone and had left a medium for him to use. All he had to do was speak the words and he'd be good to go.
There was nothing he could say that would bring back that now missing cup however.
Iruka looked all over the place for it, sure that neither Naruto nor the women had taken it. Outside the window over the sink, he caught the raven leisurely walking across the outside path to west wing, possibly carrying something or nothing at all for his cape hung around his shoulders closely. He'd bet ten gold coins that Sasuke didn't take it at all and had more than likely thrown it away out of view to not be openly hurtful.
One thing was for certain above everything else at least.
Sasuke would not be joining them for breakfast.
~::~ Eat Up ~::~
Sakura didn't care. Why should she? It was just a cup of tea that she really thought would work or open him up a bit. The Elkin man was nowhere to be seen though. She picked at her scrambled eggs with a fork and held a small frown. 'I guess that was really pointless, or perhaps… it's me?' She wondered if he just had a prejudice against Orcs and likely was more comfortable with his own kind. She took a long glance at Hinata and how easily she got men to smile at her, especially the blond man. 'I should have let her do it.' There is beauty in strength and then beauty in body. Her friend possessed a great deal of one of them and she was a bit jealous at that, incapable of filling out like she did. There were busty Orc women but they usually hated themselves because of it. Strength was what they deemed more important. She couldn't help but be a little different and hold other opinions about her body. She touched her lips and ghosted fingertips over to where her bottom fangs used to protrude up from.
'At least I don't have these anymore until they grow back.' Her thoughtful actions only ceased when she noticed Naruto watching her confusingly. She shoved her hands down under the table to her lap and gripped those pants legs, emeralds zeroing in anywhere but at blue.
"Did they remove your fangs?"
She nodded only.
"That's horrible. They will grow back though so don't worry too much," Iruka spoke up amid tackling his ham slice, "My mother used to get hers knocked out often doing work around the house. Some numbing powder will help when it's growing back should you need it."
"Thank you," she uttered with a small smile.
Naruto aimed to make that simper bigger. "You know what, I can't wait to see it. I bet it'll be adorable."
"Mm." Hinata agreed with a mouthful, missing her friend's deep hue of red come forth.
"Ah, well, um… thank you again." She hid away in her shirt, bringing her knees up to hug and hide her face. 'Stop saying that!'
Her sudden reclusive-ness made the blond feel like he'd said something wrong. Perhaps that was too friendly of a compliment. His caretaker seemed to disagree with his pout. 'Did I not?'
Iruka wanted him to figure it out for himself because… he had no idea either how to read woman. The one he spoke to most was a massive pervert and he couldn't tell if she was actually serious or not. Sweat drops were definitely painted on both these men.
Hinata finally got her food down and gave them some clear news. "T-That was good."
'She liked it!' That's a success in this blond's book. He smiled helplessly at how she drank from her silver goblet with her eyes closed and then expelled a cute sigh afterwards. Whoever she ended up with, would be a lucky man to have someone so precious in just about every little thing they did. Not in a million years did he believe he'd ever be that guy.
And so, his kindness knew no bounds and his heart did not close itself off like it should have.
He wasn't the only one making destined mistakes today though.
There was one other man now drying his dark spikes from a late shower while sitting there in a towel on his bed. He let the cotton fabric fall around his shoulders and then hunched some with his hands clasped over his lap. There he gazed stoically out to the balcony over yonder as a lavender scent drifted throughout his space from the nightstand.
A/N: Yay, I'm glad ya'll like it! And yes, Naruto is half vampire and Sasuke is an elf endowed with magical abilities.
