Space is big.
Yes, I know. It's pretty much a given that the infinite expanse of our existence is big. But you never really expect it to take so long to move across it. When we talk about how Bulma or Goku only took a few weeks to get to Namek, you never really expect those days to last so long.
An hour only seems long when you are sitting still doing nothing for that whole hour, counting the seconds. I was going to have to do this for 24 of them; Maybe even repeatedly.
I appear not to be the only one uneasy; my team seemed to be perpetually on edge. I mean yes, I was just known as the most vicious and crude overlord till a few hours ago, but they should have known that I was different now. I was, after all, me now.
Coughing to draw attention, I decide to kill some time. If I was going to have to wait days on this ship, I wanted them to go by as fast as possible.
"So, why don't we all introduce ourselves? We never got the chance to back on the ship." I ask matter of factly, waving my hand in a dismissive way. The group seemed surprised by this, aside from the General and the twins.
"What would you like to know, Lord Frieza?" Banna asks.
I didn't really know all that much about them aside from their combat abilities, so I'd ask them to tell me about their history. Space has lots of space for us to go through. We had all the time in the trip towards a world.
"Tell me about your past, hobbies, interests, anything will do." I say, deciding against changing too much too quickly. I can gradually lose the emperors attitude, but they needed the reassurance that they were still part of some kind of force.
Banna clears her throat and stands at attention.
"I am lieutenant Banna the Red. I come from the planet Platic. Our planet was once a lawless warzone until your forces came and turned it into a metropolis. I saw fit to use my strength to bring order to other worlds." She says, me now realizing that she was like a Da*th Va*er character maybe. She continues, "My hobbies include training, and I am interested in military tactics and history."
I didn't learn much off that. I kinda wanted to know more backstory, but before I could ask, Syco was up.
"I am Syco, your lordship. I'm from planet Sydlia. My planet is just a tourist trap, and I wanted to get off the planet and see the universe. I joined the force because I showed aptitude with my abilities, and I know nobody is stupid enough to mess with you. Well, not that that worked out." So she was after an easy job with perks? I imagine any military career pays well, and she would definitely explore all kinds of planets. So she was a nomad of sorts? "My hobbies are updating my fans on (space tw*tter) and I'm interested in all kinds of weird stuff."
Weird stuff?
"I mean anything that's unusual."
That explains a lot. She never really wanted to be a solider; she just wanted a free visa and no travel expenses. Feels bad.
I look towards Guat, who was leaning against a wall bar with his arms crossed, left foot on the bar he was leaning on, and all 6 of his eyes closed. He would look cool if it wasn't for his size.
He opened his 2 front eyes.
"My name is Guat. I was born on a space station. I have no home planet." Oh boy, I could see little Timmy getting his 'edgy' out right now. "I was always shunned for my abilities, and the only people who accept me were a small group of thugs. They bred me to be an assassin for hire, and I killed a good deal of people. You can't dodge a beam if you don't know where or when it will come for you." He said with a sick twisted smile. His eyes were closed and he tried his best to emit a villain aura. Instead I got the aura of 'Vampire Diaries season 2.'
"Eventually I was caught, and I had to choose between prison time or joining the military. I was always a rebel at heart, but prison would be troublesome." He said, still trying to keep his cool guy pose. It would have been comical if he hadn't mentioned that he was essentially an orphan that grew up into a life of crime.
That begs the question of why he tried to help me fight my dad.
I'd ask, but I know a thing or two about social moods. I'd ruin this one if I brought it up and make things awkward.
Guat turned his gaze back to the floor as he let himself smile again.
Syco turned to him and commented, "You want some salt with all that pepper?"
Guat simply gave a fake single laugh and turned away.
Next were the twins.
They were staring at me.
No, that wouldn't be accurate to say. More like;
They've been staring at me
For our entire exchange.
They both had kind expressions; borderline smiles, but not quite there.
Before I have a chance to respond, Nize speaks up;
"We know everything, Lord Frieza. No need to worry."
Nizer joins in.
"Your secret is safe with us, Lord Frieza."
Huh?
I'm about to panic when they both begin speaking in unison.
"We are Nize and Nizer. We were born on the asteroid Ageal 63. We were discovered by Frieza forces after the asteroid was raided for creating mutants without Frieza's knowledge. We were two of those mutants."
They were going to quickly. What do they know about me? Why are they just going on?
"The mutations that were being developed ranged from telekinesis, electromagnetic manipulation, and telepathy."
How did they find out? Did I slip up somewhere?
"You can probably guess what ability we shared."
Of course…
Their telepathy was obviously not only to each other. Otherwise it wouldn't make sense how they got into the Frieza force at such young ages.
This was bad news.
You can't keep secrets from mind readers.
"You don't have to worry, Lord Frieza. We like you. We wouldn't do anything to you if you don't do anything to us."
They had sickly sweet smiles.
Syco had a disturbed expression. "Those kids creep me out even more now. Can't wait to be out of this team."
Guat seemed to share the sentiment, sweating visibly after hearing that the pair could read minds…let me guess, he was lying about his backstory?
"Our hobbies and interests right now is watching you. We hope you don't mind." They say. It made sense why they were so in sync. If you have 2 mind readers become friends, of course they'd become close, especially if they are test tube babies.
Nizer seemed to find that funny, and it creeped me out how I didn't even say anything.
…
The room was silent again.
Our gazes slowly cantered on the General.
He slowly opened his eyes from his sitting position, turned his head to us, and said,
"No."
He then promptly went back to sleep.
Well. That sure did help to kill time at least.
"I do believe it is your turn now, Lord Frieza.", Inquired Banna.
It was surprising; she gave me an order without even knowing it. Her expression held a small shard of hope. Maybe she was hoping I'd 'open up' so she could 'heal me'. I could also be looking too deeply into a simple turn order.
"I am Lord Frieza. I am not sure what planet I was born on. My hobbies right now is trying to keep the universe form dying. My interests are in fiction and people." I say briefly. If I gave away too much, then everyone would know my situation. I wasn't ready to let go of the authority that name gave me yet. At least not until my dad was off the throne and I could find a worthy successor.
"Thank you, Lord Frieza." Banna says, nodding to me and adjusting her position to look out the window at the stars whizzing by. She seemed to be getting more and more relaxed as time went on. She really must like stars, huh?
Not knowing what to expect, I decide to look as well.
The vast colours of the universe assault my vision. Rainbows of varying colours flowing in star speckled gassy wafts that look like they could evaporate into non-existence any moment, yet staying for all to see, as long as we want to see it. I forgot that space wasn't just a dark void for a moment, and Banna unknowingly taught me that space is much more than that.
In spite of the trip being a long one, if I have a view like this, maybe it wouldn't be so bad.
Nizer laughs again.
