She awoke at the sound of the front door slamming shut, she assumed Dean had just gotten home. She checked her new phone for the time, 9:52. She had not intended to sleep that late, she jumped out of the bed to race downstairs, hoping she had not missed dinner. When she barreled through the kitchen door, the only person in there was Dean, who looked just as surprised at what happened as she did.
"Everything okay, kiddo?", Dean questioned, setting his empty coffee thermos down on the counter.
"Where..is everyone?," Charlie asked, confused as why there wasn't a flurry of bodies trying to attack the fresh food Cas had made.
"I'm assuming Cas didn't tell you," he said with a laugh, "it's wacky Wednesday, two days out of the week you make your own dinner, hence Wacky Wednesday and Fend for yourself Friday"
"You people and your weird day of the week schedules," Charlie said with a shake of her head as she walked over to the fridge to grab a snack.
"Yea yea yea i know, trust me it wasn't my idea. Cas thought it'd be a good way for you kids to feel normal or grounded..i don't know", Dean defended as he threw the dirty thermos into the dishwasher, before bidding goodnight to the young girl and dragging his sore body up the stairs.
Charlie sighed as she searched the fridge and cupboard for something to munch on before bed. She settled on some leftover tacos, after she had gulped them down she made her way back up the stairs to the comfort of her own bedroom. Her new phone sat perfectly on her bedside table, right where she had left it. She kicked off her slippers at the end of her bed and stretched out on the cool surface of it's sheets. Just as she began to slowly drift back into the sweet rhythm of sleep, her phone vibrated loudly against the hardwood underneath. Startled, the young girl sleepily reached for her phone to determine the culprit of disturbing her slumber. There was one new Instagram notification, she recognized the face. It was the boy who sat behind her in Geometry. She accepted his follow request before setting her phone back down and falling into a deep sleep. Her phone had buzzed several more times throughout the night but Charlie had decided that her sleep was more important than whatever was causing the dreadful noise.
Charlie was downstairs, distracted by the sweet smell of waffles and bagels. She loved Cas's cooking, but could never understand how he had the time to make all of this every day, all day. After she had cleaned her plate and stuck it in the dishwasher alongside the others, she remembered the annoyance of last night. She pulled her phone from her jean pocket and checked her notifications. 23 new notifications. Charlie rolled her eyes, no wonder it bothered her so much last night. Most of them were follow requests from different classmates. However 2 notifications were DMs from the first boy to follow her:
Hey
You up?
She instantly felt bad for not responding, clearly he wanted to have a conversation. She shrugged it off and responded with a hello, before shoving her phone back into her pocket and racing to the Impala before they left her behind.
"Alright kiddos, game plan for today?", Dean asked as he fired up the Impala.
"Library date," Sam replied as he longingly squeezed his partner's hand.
"Gross, I'm free tonight", Charlie responded.
"Alright well, Dean and I are off to run errands tonight so just order pizza or something for dinner", Cas insisted. They all nodded before going back to stare out their respective windows. Before long they had pulled into the school parking lot.
"Hey charlie can I talk to you for a second," Dean asked after the other three boys had already departed from the car.
"I guess", Charlie shrugged.
"Why don't you invite one of your new friends over to the house tonight?," Dean offered.
"I don't have any yet", Charlie admitted.
"Well make one, kiddo! Just no more than two at the house and be responsible", Dean sternly responded.
"Yea yeah yea ok DAD", Charlie replied sarcastically before grabbing her backpack and jogging to the front doors of the school.
Dean knew that her remark was meant to be sarcastic, but he didn't mind the title of 'dad'. He actually kind of prefered it. He shook his head and once again made his way to work.
It was finally time for her last class of the day, geometry, her least favorite. As the teacher droned on about weird shapes, Charlie stared at the clock trying to force time to move quicker. Halfway through the class, she felt a tap on her shoulder as the boy behind her handed her a folded up piece of notebook paper. She carefully unfolded it, making sure she didn't seem suspicious and get in trouble. On the paper, one poorly scribbled question was scrawled across:
Wanna hang out later?
-Micah
She thought back to Dean's offer in the car this morning, before she quickly scribbled her own secret message onto the paper:
I guess. Meet me after class.
-C.
She neatly folded the piece of paper up and slid it onto the desk behind her. Charlie was actually pretty excited that she had made a new friend, and it was a cute boy too. Unfortunately her anticipation only made the time tic by slower. But what seemed like a thousand years later, the bell's loud ring echoed through the hallways of her school, followed by screams and laughter as the kids piled into the hallway ready to escape this dreadful place.
"Hey," a voice rang out from behind her. She turned to see that it was the boy she had exchanged notes with. This was actually her first time seeing him facing towards him. He had black hair that seemed to whisp about his face and ears. His jawline was peppered with scruff that made him seem both well groomed but also laid back. She stared into his piercing dark brown eyes which were tinted with flakes of black and gold.
"Uh..hey," Charlie responded, a little flustered at how handsome the boy actually was.
"So where do ya wanna go," the boys deep voice melted over her in a sweet soothing rhythm.
"We can go back to my house?," Charlie offered with a shrug of her shoulders.
"Sounds good, is it far?," the boy asked.
"Not really only like a 15 minute walk," Charlie assured as they had finally made it through the crowd of students and out the main doors.
"Oh well we can take my truck if you'd like?," the boy offered, pointing to a beat up black pick up truck. She nodded and the two made their way to the old truck. She lifted herself in and onto the seat which had an old dusty sheet for a seat cover. The mirror had dog tags hanging from it, she couldn't quite read the name on them. It took a lot of might to slam her door shut, any other vehicle and the door probably would have fallen off.
"Sorry that door's broken so you gotta slam it kinda hard," the boy apologized. Charlie dismissed the apology with a laugh and a wave of the hand. She didn't mind, she liked the quirky aspect of the truck.
It wasn't long before the two had pulled into the driveway of the house she was now staying at. The boy turned the key in the ignition, turning the car off. They both sat in awkward silence staring at the front door, wondering who was gonna open their door first. Charlie gave a sigh of relief when he had finally opened his, the creaking of the door breaking the silence.
"This is a pretty nice house," the boy laughed as he stared and admired the home.
"Thanks, it's my brothers," Charlie explained, the words felt weird in her mouth, she had never called Cas or Dean her brother before.
"Where are they now?," the boy asked, suddenly noticing the empty driveway.
"My older brothers are off running errands and my younger brothers are at the library for a while," Charlie said with a shrug as she inserted her shiny new key into the lock which gave way with a twist.
"So no ones home?," the boy said with a smirk. Charlie nodded her head and threw her backpack on one of the kitchen chairs.
"Sweet..", the boy whispered as he shut and locked the front door before heading in the direction he had seen the young girl go…
