Chapter 16
As Bella, Lucy and Marcus piled into the waiting car, Alice dithered around behind them, making sure everyone got in safely and left nothing behind. When they were all loaded up, the man in the front peeled away from the curb, and Marcus began calling Edward, updating him on the situation. It was a very brief call in which he told Edward we were heading to one of Emmett's safe houses.
He then put in a call to Jenks, letting him know what had happened. Giving him a description of the man who he suspected was following Bella.
As soon as he hung up his phone rang.
"Edward. I need the line." He said into the phone. "2 minutes." He responded to whatever Edward said, and then passed the phone back to Bella.
"Edward?"
"Bella?"
They both asked at the same time.
"Are you okay?" He asked, his voice full of panic. "How about Lucy?"
"We're fine. Honest. A little shaken but safe."
Edward let out a long sigh. "I'm heading to the safe house as soon as I can get away. One of Emmett's guys will come and get me, to make sure I'm not followed."
"I really don't want you to wo-"
"Of course I'm worried." Edward said, cutting her off. "You two mean everything to me. And you're in danger. I'll be there."
Bella accepted the finality in his tone with a soft smile. She reminded herself that if the roles were reversed she'd want to be there for him.
"Times up." Marcus reprimanded. Turning back towards Bella with his hand stretched out.
The couple said good bye and hung up. Both with heavy hearts, filled with worry.
Before Bella could even take a breath, Marcus spoke.
"We're being followed." He informed the driver and Bella.
"Black Sedan." The driver confirmed. "One row to the left. Three cars down."
Bella turned and located the car. And gasped.
"What?" Marcus demanded.
"I… I think I know him." Bella explained. She turned more towards the car to get a better look. Sure enough she recognized the man.
"He's definitely the one following us. I know he's one of the men who held me hostage." By the time she finished, Bella's voice was trembling and she couldn't seem to take a breath.
"Damn it." Marcus swore. "We need to call the police."
Bella's eyes went wide. Wasn't the point of this protection to not need to call the police? But she couldn't find her voice to speak up.
Before she could even try though, there was an explosion on the driver's side and the car skidded across the road and flipped twice. Stopping when it finally hit the guard rails.
Bella's head hit the passenger side door as she flung her arm across Lucy's little body in the car seat.
Her head exploded in pain and there was a loud ringing in both ears. Something wet was running down her head and she couldn't seem to see straight.
And then everything went black.
Bang!
Bang!Bang!
Bang!
Bang! Bang!
Bella's head started to throb with the each bang and reverberation. Making the pain even worse.
She couldn't open her eyes. She felt like there were weights on her lids preventing her from lifting them, no matter how hard she tried.
There was a high pierced, wailing coming from somewhere nearby and she new it was her responsibility to make it stop. But Bella couldn't open her eyes to figure out what to do.
She finally started to win the battle against her lids but felt herself being jostled from side to side as she came to.
When she opened her eyes it wasn't a relief, it was the beginning of her nightmare. The man looking at her had grey eyes. The most distinct and cold grey eyes she had ever seen.
It was Cauis. A guard and one of her worst nightmares from the institution.
Just a short one this week y'all. It was a tough one for me to write. But please let me know what you think.
