Chapter 20- School again
"I believe the hardest part of healing after you've lost someone you love, is to recover the 'you' that went away with them."
Rayna's POV (2 weeks later, cause I couldn't think of anything else to write as fillers)-
I sat quietly eating some buttered popcorn on Jaelyn's lap while we watched a movie in the Cullen living room. Most of the time we were just passing the time in whatever way we could, in order to distract us from our thoughts. It didn't usually work. I often found myself lost in my thoughts, thinking about our family -or lack thereof.
Over the weeks, most of our extended family had died. And we still had no idea how they got sick in the first place. We knew that only the hybrids in the family are getting sick and dying, but after their mates died, they either isolated themselves or found another way to die. The only ones left in our family besides us was our cousins. Their parents died too, and they were coming to live in our house. We would be moving back to our house too, to be with them.
We had no idea what was going to happen to us. Us and our cousins were the last ones alive. We were next to die. I would be lying if I said I wasn't scared.
"Guys, we should probably go to school again... We've missed enough school over the weeks..." Jaelyn suggested.
"You're right... We still have time to go today... We might be a little late, but that's better than not going at all." Joslyn replied.
"Do we have to?" Rhys whined.
"Yes, we all will go to school today. Get your backpacks." Joslyn said as she threw us our backpacks that were lined up by the wall. Everyone caught their backpacks and left the house.
Jaelyn went with me and Rhys to the elementary school. Before we got to the doors of the school, Jaelyn stopped and turned to look at us.
"You guys have to make sure to act normal during school. We don't want people to question what happened over the last few weeks. Do you understand?" She asked us, we both nodded. "You can tell them that our parents... passed away... If they ask why, then just say they got sick. They don't need to know any more details then that." We both nodded again and we headed into the school.
She walked us both to our classes and I sat in my assigned seat. My teacher, Ms. Reghlin, walked over to me.
"Hey, Rayna! I'm glad to see you back!" Ms. Reghlin smiled.
"Hi, Ms. Reghlin!" I smiled back.
"Where were you the past few weeks?" She asked.
I frowned, trying not to think about it too much. "My... my parents... passed away." I could feel tears rolling my eyes.
"Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't know, I'm sorry." She hugged me and wiped the tears from my face.
"It's ok." I whispered.
"I've got to start teaching the class now. Will you be alright?" She asked.
"Yea, I'll be fine." I said and she went to the front of the classroom to teach everyone.
"Where were you before? You were gone for sooooooo long!" My friend, Payton, asked me at lunch.
"My mommy and daddy died..." I replied sadly, managing to not cry again.
"How?" She asked.
"They got sick." I answered.
"People can die from that?" She asked.
"Sometimes." I shrugged.
"I'm sorry they died..." She said as she hugged me.
"Thanks, I still have my brothers and sisters though... so I guess that's good." I said, trying to find a bright side to this all.
"I guess that's good." She said and started eating her lunch.
We sat in silence as we both ate our lunches.
"Ray, I want to talk to you for a second." I turned around and saw Rhys standing there.
"Ok." I got up and we walked over to the corner of the cafeteria. "What do you want to talk about?"
"What are we supposed to do if everyone keeps asking questions?" He asked. "I told my friends that our parents... passed away... and they kept asking questions. What do I say?"
"I don't know... Jaelyn said to just say that they were sick... She said no more details than that..." I responded.
"So we just say that we don't want to talk about it? Or should we have someone pick us up from school so we can't talk about it?" He asked.
"I don't know what we do... You're supposed to be the older one! You make the decisions, not me!" I said.
"But I don't know... Maybe we should just go back to the Cullen's house? All the questions are also making me more sad, and I don't want to cry in front of my friends... So I want to go back." He suggested.
"Ok, let's go have a teacher call one of the Cullen's then." I walked over to Ms. Reghlin and asked, "Can you have someone pick us up from school?"
"Why do you want to go home?" She asked.
"We're too upset about our parents right now..." Rhys said.
"Oh, alright come with me, we can call you're current guardian to come and pick you up." She said as she lead us to the office.
Once we got to the office, Ms. Reghlin talked to the lady at the front desk and she came back over to us. "Just sit over there while you wait." She pointed to some chairs that were by the wall.
We walked over there and sat next to each other in the chairs while we watched the lady at the front desk call someone.
About fifteen minutes later, Esme came into the office. "I'm here to pick up Rayna and Rhys."
"Alright, just sign this and you can bring them home." The lady at the front desk said.
Esme signed the paper and came over to us. "Are you ok, guys?"
"Kind of, but also kind of not." Rhys answered and I nodded in agreement.
"Alright, well, I'll just bring you guys to my house and you can hang out with Jasper to make you feel better when he gets home." She suggested and we nodded before going out to her car.
We got to the Cullen house in about five minutes because of the speed Esme was driving at.
"You guys want to do something fun?" She asked.
"Like what?" I asked.
"We could... Bake a cake?" She suggested.
"Sure." Rhys agreed.
"Can it be chocolate?" I asked.
"Sure, let's go make it." She smiled and we went into the kitchen.
A/N- So... that was definitely not a good chapter. I didn't like it. I couldn't think of what to write about, but I didn't want to keep you guys waiting, so this is what you get for now. I probably won't write another chapter for a while because I am currently working on another story that I like a lot better. I'm not giving up on this story, but I will be taking a break from it. If you want to read the other story, it's called 'Hidden in a Hidden World.' I will be posting it on fictionpress… tomorrow? It's also currently on Quotev .com so if you want to read it on there, then you can! I have the first seven chapters already posted on it there. Go check it out! I think it's written a lot better than this story is, so I hope you enjoy it!
