"You shouldn't have come here" Doug said coldly and Hannah turned around to see her brother.
"Doug, I'm so happy to see you" Hannah said and hugged him, so he got confused.
"What are you doing?" He asked and pushed her back.
"You are my brother, can't I feel happy to see you?" She asked.
"I heard you swearing as I came in and you tried to turn me in to the cops" Doug commented.
"That wasn't us, it was Jade's parents' idea" Hannah affirmed "And she followed along, I didn't betray you, so I don't understand your reaction" she lied.
"You shouldn't have come here, Hannah, now…" He said mortified.
"Why? You think I care about her?" Hannah asked "Please, she deserves this and you're much more of a sibling to me than she is"
"Really?" He asked confused.
"Yes" She affirmed and he sighed sadly as he looked at Jade.
"I guess this means our time together is over, Delilah" Doug said and reached into his pocket for a pistol, so Hannah's eyes wide opened.
"What are you doing?" Hannah asked confused as Doug put the gun on Jade's forehead and she felt the tears streaming down her cheeks, she was so scared.
"She has to die" He affirmed and unlocked the gun, but Hannah pushed his hand away from Jade.
"Wait, no!" She said scared.
"Why not? She is a problem" Doug said anxiously "I need to get rid of the evidence, things will be like before"
"I don't think we should kill her, we can wait until all this settles down and then bring you both home, our parents will be so happy" Hannah said and Doug thought about it "They won't forgive you if you actually kill her, but if you don't, then we'll be together again" She insisted.
"What about her other family? She will leave us again" He affirmed.
"Not if we erase her memory" Hannah suggested.
"What are you talking about? How?" Doug asked and she thought about it.
"I read some articles the other day while doing an assignment and they mentioned this new drug that was proving to be efficient in PTSD patients, it erased their memory and allowed them to start over" Hannah commented and Jade could feel her heart beating faster, she didn't want to forget her life.
"Really? What drug is it?" Doug asked.
"I don't remember, but I will look for it and maybe we could get it and give it to her, that way we'll be a family again" Hannah said and smiled at him, so he smiled back.
"Yes, yes that would be perfect" Doug said and they turned to Jade smiling "Don't worry, little sister, you won't even remember this soon"
"That's a promise" Hannah added but then winked at Jade and nodded "It's all gonna be good"
"Thank you, Hannah" Doug said and hugged her.
"No problem, now we just need to keep her safe and healthy until we fix her" She responded "And I think we should dye her hair back to brown again" she suggested.
"Why?" Doug asked.
"Black feels more like Jade, she is Delilah now, we have to look the same so she won't ask questions when she wakes up" She responded and he nodded.
"You are right, we'll do it" Doug said and she sighed.
"Okay, I'll go home now but I'll be back soon" Hannah said "Don't worry, Doug, we are in this together now"
Doug dyed Jade's hair back to brown and Hannah continued visiting a couple of times a day to make sure Jade was okay, but she was never alone with her for long so she couldn't put her plan in action. She wanted to go to the police or her parents, but she knew that Doug was prepared to shoo Jade if he felt threatened, so she didn't want to risk it.
"Hey Hannah" Doug said as she walked into the cabin.
"Hey, I can't stay for long today because I have a test at my new school" Hannah said.
"New school?" Doug asked.
"I don't want to be homeschooled anymore, I just want to be normal" She responded "I'll be going to the city later and I think I know how to get the drug"
"What? Are you serious?" Doug asked excitedly.
"Yeah, I think I might be able to get it, if we are lucky" Hannah said and he smiled.
"Oh my god, did you hear that, Delilah? You'll be free soon" He said to Jade and she simply looked at them.
"The thing is I need money to buy it, like…a lot, do you have some?" Hannah asked knowing the answer.
"Yeah, but not here, it's back in Los Angeles" Doug informed and Hannah sighed.
"Okay, not ideal" She said "But maybe you could go there tonight, I'll take care of Delilah"
"What?" Doug asked.
"What options do we have? We need the money to buy the drug" Hannah said "It's fine, just tell me whatever it is you inject on her and I'll do it"
"Are you sure about this?" He asked.
"Of course I'm sure, how hard can it be? She can't move" Hannah said and Doug took a breath, he didn't want to leave her alone but he had no choice and he trusted his sister.
"Okay, but the trip will take me a whole night and you need to inject it every six hours sharp, not before and not after" Doug explained "Her next dose is in 5 hours and the next in 11"
"Okay, I'll do the one in eleven and then six hours after that, don't worry" Hannah said and he nodded "Alright, I'm off to school now, I'll see you later"
"Bye"
As Hannah had promised, she sneaked out of her house and went to the cabin that night, Doug prepared Jade's shots and explained every last detail to Hannah. He wanted to make sure Jade would be taken care of.
"Don't take long" Hannah said to him and he nodded.
"Don't worry, I'll be back early" Doug said and left, Hannah simply went back into the house and sat down next to Jade, she still had a few hours to go before her next shot.
"I know what you must be thinking, but don't worry, this is gonna be over soon" Hannah said and sighed as she read a book. Time passed and when the time for the next dose came, Hannah simply watched her sister, she wasn't going to drug her again because she needed her to move.
Jade's body had to be without the drug for a few hours before she began to move, but she finally did it and Hannah helped her to walk around and move her arms and legs "Okay, slow…don't rush it" Hannah said as Jade walked across the room.
"It's okay, I got it" Jade said and took a breath "Oh my god, I thought I would never get off that bed" she admitted and smiled at Hannah.
"I can imagine" She responded.
"Thank you, really" Jade said and her sister smiled awkwardly.
"I owe you this…I guess" She commented "But we are not done"
"What do you mean?" Jade asked.
"Give me your clothes" Hannah demanded as she took off her clothes and Jade looked at her confused.
"What are you doing? Why do we need to exchange clothes?" Jade questioned and Hannah looked at her emotionlessly, but it was as if she could read her mind "No, you are not staying here in my place" She said.
"We are out of fucking time, he is gonna be here any minute" Hannah said "Come on!"
"What am I supposed to do? Just leave you here?" Jade asked as she took her clothes off.
"Go get help, I should've done it but I was afraid he would hurt you" Hannah said and they put each other's clothes on "Don't worry, I'll be fine…just go home and talk to our parents, tell them the truth" She said and then they heard the car arriving so they looked at each other scared.
"Quick! Give me the paralyzer" Hannah said as she jumped on the bed and laid down, Jade simply grabbed the syringe and injected her sister just in time before Doug arrived.
"Hey, you are here early" Jade said "I just gave her the second shot" She informed, the drug hadn't kicked in yet but Hannah was doing her best to remain still.
"I got the money" Doug said and handed her a little paper bag "You should be able to buy it with this"
"Okay, maybe we'll have it by tonight" Jade said and looked at Hannah, who was now in her place "I'm gonna go now, I don't want mom to realize I'm away"
"Okay, see you later and Hannah…" Doug said and held her arm "Thank you for doing this"
"No problem" Jade said and left the cabin, she hadn't been outside in so long that breathing fresh air felt magical. She simply smiled to herself and started running back to the house, she needed to tell her parents what had happened and save Hannah, Doug didn't know it was the wrong sister and she was afraid of what he would to her.
Jade arrived around an hour and a half later and as soon as she opened the door, she saw her mother walking into the kitchen. "Hannah, where were you?" Marissa asked as she kept walking and Jade took a breath, she followed her into the kitchen and simply stared at her.
"Hey" Jade said and Marissa turned around to see her.
"Hey darling, I am making…" She said nicely, but then her smile dropped and she stared at Jade confused "Hannah?"
"What's the matter?" Jade asked and her mother looked down.
"God, I'm going crazy" She whispered to herself and wiped a few tears away.
"Mom, are you okay?" Jade questioned and Marissa took a breath.
"Don't mind me, honey, I think I'm tired…I'm having stupid thoughts" Marissa said and Jade smiled to herself, it was true, Marissa could actually tell her daughters apart.
"What thoughts?" Jade asked and Marissa looked at her as she shook her head.
"It's impossible, don't worry about it" Marissa admitted "I just…it's as if you were…" she started but stopped herself "Forget it, darling, you don't have to deal with this"
"As if I were Jade?" Jade asked and Marissa looked at her sadly "It's because I am" she informed and her mother's eyes wide opened.
"What?" She questioned shocked.
"I'm alive" Jade said and Marissa covered her mouth in shock, she stared at Jade from top to bottom several times and her eyes filled with tears "It's me, I promise"
"Oh my god, darling" Marissa said as she hugged her and Jade hugged her back "I thought we'd lost you forever" she added as she cried her eyes out.
"There are my girls" Bryan said as he walked into the kitchen.
"It's her! It's Delilah" Marissa said to her husband and he looked at Jade shocked.
"Oh my god, how is this possible?" He asked and embraced his daughter in his arms "Thank you, god, thank you" He said as the tears streamed down his face.
"But honey, what happened? Where have you been? Where is Doug?" Marissa asked.
"He had me paralyzed in a cabin you own" Jade informed "We need to call the police and go there right now, he's got Hannah there but be careful, he has a gun, he might shoot her"
"What?" Bryan asked confused.
"She found us and we exchanged places because we had no time, we need to go get her now" Jade said and they looked at each other mortified.
"Don't worry, it's all gonna be okay"
Bryan and Marissa called the police and they managed to arrest Doug before he could hurt Hannah, she was taken to the hospital to drain the drugs off her system and then they all went home. However, Jade still needed to go back, she liked her new parents, but she couldn't abandon her life and they finally understood her, so they took her to Los Angeles themselves.
"Yes" Diana said emotionlessly as she opened the door and saw Jade standing outside with her other family, but Hannah was in the back so Diana assumed it was her "I told you I didn't want to see you" she said and tried to close the door, but Jade stopped her.
"Mom, it's me" Jade said and smiled, so Diana stared at her confused.
"What is this? A joke? You think it's funny?" Diana asked upset and Marissa chuckled.
"Don't worry, Diana, you'll learn to tell them apart" She said and they stepped aside so Hannah appeared in the back and waved at her.
"Hey, I'm Hannah" Hannah said and Diana looked back at Jade, who was just smiling at her.
"Oh my god" Diana said as her eyes filled with tears and hugged her daughter "God, this is real, you're real, right? This isn't a dream?" She asked as she broke the hug to look at her face.
"No, I'm alive" Jade said smiling and her mother hugged her again "Don't worry, Doug is in a mental facility now and we are safe"
"I can't believe this, it's you, it's actually you, my little girl" Diana said and smiled as she stroked Jade's face, but then she looked at Marissa and the rest of her other family "Please, come on in…I'm sorry"
"No worries, we just came to drop her off safely, she wanted to come" Bryan said and sighed in resignation "So, here you are, back…home" He added but his voice cracked and Jade looked at him sadly.
"Please stay" Jade insisted "You are my parents too" she added and her sisters smiled at her, they knew their parents needed to hear that.
They all came into the house and spent a lovely afternoon together, Jade was happy to see her two families bonding because she didn't want to abandon either and she now trusted her biological parents more, they'd driven her to the West house and she knew that meant they valued her happiness over their own, so she felt it was safe to go back to the ranch by herself.
Beck had finally accepted Jade's death, but that didn't really make the pain of her loss easier and he still went to her grave every day after school. He kept it clean and he changed her flowers, he liked to just be there with a part of her and speak to her as if she were alive, he would tell her about his day, his feelings and his plans. Sometimes it was easy and sometimes he cried, but he couldn't stop doing it.
"Today wasn't so bad, we are doing a play, you know? You would like it, I got the understudy but that's okay, I don't really feel like doing it" Beck commented "My parents always bug me and say I have to act more and get a hobby, they are even trying to convince me to go to therapy, like that will help…" He said and chuckled to himself as he shook his head.
Jade knew he'd be there because she'd talked to his parents and they'd told her, so she showed up at the graveyard and saw Beck sitting next to her grave; there were fresh flowers on the vessel and he was talking to the stone like someone was actually there, so she approached him from behind quietly to hear him.
"Our friends told me the other day they want to go out for your birthday, they say it's a way to keep you alive in our minds" Beck said and looked down "You are always alive in mine, you always will be" He affirmed as he stroked the stone and wiped a couple of tears away, so Jade felt her heart breaking "I miss you…so much, you have no idea" He added and more tears streamed down his cheeks "I'm sorry, I just…" He said and stopped to take a breath and wipe his tears away.
"I miss you too" Jade said and Beck immediately turned around.
"Get away from me, Hannah, this isn't funny" Beck said and shook his head "Have some respect and leave"
"Beck, it's me…it's really me" Jade affirmed and sat down next to him, so he looked at her coldly "I've missed you so much" She said and smiled at him, but he still couldn't tell the difference between them and she had brown hair, so he didn't believe her.
"What do you want from me? Didn't you do enough already?" Beck asked coldly "Jade is dead"
"I'm Jade" Jade responded and he shook his head as he looked away, so she held his face and made him look at her "Beck, look at me…it's me, I'm not dead"
"Doug burned Jade and this was all that was left of her" Beck said as he showed her his necklace, he now wore the J and the B together, so Jade smiled at him.
"Ask me anything, I'm not Hannah" Jade said and Beck looked at her incredulously.
"What did you give me the day we got back together?" Beck asked and she laughed.
"You had to pick that question, didn't you?" She responded and sighed "I gave you a hideous dog that nearly killed your dad and then the stupid nurse hit on you" she said and he immediately moved back as his heart beat faster, so he started taking small breaths "It's me, Jade"
"I'm going crazy, this has to be a dream" Beck said and shook his head, but Jade simply smiled and held his hands.
"I'm alive, Doug faked my death but I'm here, I'm alive" Jade affirmed and made him touch her face, so he stroked her cheek and his eyes filled with tears again.
"Jade, it's you, it really is you" He said and smiled.
"Yes, it's me" She said and he embraced her in his arms as tightly as he could.
"Oh god, I love you so much" Beck said and smiled to himself as he held her, he'd only dreamed about that moment for a long time and he couldn't believe it had come true. She was alive and they were together again.
Jade's life had drastically changed overnight and even though it had been a traumatic experience, she was happy to have the Rivers in her life as well, she even developed feelings for her twin and Hannah did too. They were completely different people, but after spending more time together, they found things in common and they developed a connection that couldn't be explained, they didn't like each other most of the time, but they needed each other, it was like having recovered something that was missing and they felt whole for the first time in their lives.
Jade would spend some weekends and breaks in the ranch with her biological parents, she even took the gang with her and, even though it was weird for them to be around Jade and Hannah at the same time, they got used to it after a while. Jade's biological family and adoptive family also got along well, they wanted to make things easy for her and they were all good people, so they usually shared the holidays, sometimes they spent it in Los Angeles and sometimes in the ranch.
In the end, Jade had lost some time of her life thanks to her brother and she was still working on it in therapy, but in the process she'd gained a much bigger and stronger family for the rest of her life, which made those months seem small in comparison.
The end!
