Chapter 14: Wake Up, Sunshine
Shayne's POV
Racing Sohinki was definitely the highlight of my time at Smosh so far. Well, I say race, it was more like a mobile wrestling match that happened to end at a finish line. Don't get me wrong, I still love Matt like a brother, but all brothers have rivalries right? This "fight" was ours.
"So, be honest how much did he hurt you?" Mari asked me, as the three of us made the short journey back to the cabin together.
"Hurt me?" I laughed. "If I were you, I'd be more worried about what I did to him"
"Keep dreaming pal, in a real fight, I'd floor you in seconds" Sohinki smirked.
"Yeah right" I scoffed
"You want some proof, let's go right here, right now" Sohinki dropped Mari's hand and raised his fists in a joking yet somehow threatening manner.
"As much as I would love to see you kick Shayne's ass," Mari began, lowering Sohinki's fists. I scowled at her as she said this. "We have more pressing manners to attend to"
Sohinki immediately unclenched his fists and clutched Mari's hand once again.
"Oh come on guys, really?! Here?!" I shouted disgusted, catching on to what she meant.
"Don't be jealous Topp, I'm sure you and your girlfriend can also have some ... fun" Sohinki retorted before being dragged into his room, gesturing to my right hand.
"Ha ha"
Chuckling slightly, I walked into the room I shared with Joven, Wes, Koah and Courtney. Upon seeing the blonde sat on the far bed, I decided to toss a fun question her way.
"Hey Court, who would win a fight me or Matt?"
She lifted her head to answer and that was when I first saw what state she was in: Her hair was a mess, the cuffs of her sleeves were damp, her mascara was streaming down her now red cheeks, and to top it off, she was constantly sniffling.
"My god Court, what happened?" I ran over to her and sat next to her. Tentatively, I placed my arm around and simply comforted her. Before long, I felt her sink into my embrace, obviously needing a friend.
"Me and Olivia .. we broke up" She managed through sniffs and a constant stream of tears.
"I'm so sorry, are you okay?" I asked trying to be supportive, rubbing her back.
"Do I look okay?! No, you idiot! My girlfriend cheated on me, of course I'm not fucking okay!" She shouted, shoving me away. Instantly, she nestled herself back into my shoulder. "Sorry" she mumbled.
There was only one thing I took from that entire scene.
"She cheated on you?" I asked in disbelief.
Courtney sniffed once again.
"Yeah. With Boze. Shortly after accusing me of cheating on her with you"
"Why me?"
"She saw us together when you were helping me get the T Rex costume on before the race." She paused to draw in a shaky breath. "I tried explaining that you were just helping a friend who had gotten stuck but it didn't matter"
She has barely gotten the last word out before more tears fell down her cheeks as she buried her face into my shoulder, soaking my hoodie. Instinctively, I wrapped my other arm around her, gently hugging her. Realising this, Courtney pulled away slightly so she could speak once more.
"You're loving this aren't you? You're probably been waiting for something like this to happen ever since the Summer Games, waiting for your opportunity!" She accused, fatigue and despair evident in her voice.
I tilted my head down to face her once again.
"Of course not! I wouldn't wish this on anyone, let alone one of my closest friends" I defended.
Courtney seemed satisfied with this answer and nuzzled herself back into my shoulder, a comfortable silence falling on us both. Taking advantage of the situation, I pulled out my phone and earphones, ready to waste most of the night on YouTube.
"All Time Low has uploaded a new video: Wake Up, Sunshine lyric video" my phone read as soon as I opened it. Clicking on the notification, I relaxed slightly, I breathed in and let the new music fill my ears.
Courtney's POV
"Hey what're you listening to?" I asked, noticing Shayne had been quiet for a while now.
"The new All Time Low Song for the tenth time" he replied beaming, taking out the earphone nearest to me and handing it to me.
"It might cheer you up a bit actually"
"Well, let me hear it then"
Skeptically, I placed the earphone that Shayne offered me in my left ear, finding it hard to believe that a song from a band I've never heard of could successfully cheer me up. I was very, very wrong.
"Wake Up, Sunshine. Somebody loves you for yourself. Wake Up, Sunshine. Somebody loves you, somebody loves you tonight. Wake Up, Sunshine. Somebody loves you for yourself. Wake Up, Sunshine. Somebody loves you, somebody loves you tonight."
The lead singer to a very cheerful melody filled with guitars and drums. Before long, I found myself tapping my foot to the rhythm and miming the catchy lyrics.
"Wow, that really did cheer me up. Good job." I smiled, high-fiving Shayne after sitting up. I meant it. The song reminded me that just I because I was feeling alone and betrayed now, there was always someone out there who will always be there for me, no matter what. Something tells me, he's closer than I thought.
"See, I told you" Shayne smiled in return.
"Do you have any more of their songs on your phone, I actually quite like their sound"
"Yes! I have their entire discography. Wanna listen?"
"Fuck, yeah!"
Shayne looked at me hesitantly for I second.
"Before we do, there's something you should know"
"What is it?"
"I loved this hoodie" Shayne answered, pointing out the patch on his shoulder know completely soaked and dotted with black from my tears.
"I hate you" I laughed, pushing him away lightly.
