Just as his head came up, blue eyes flickering towards me, my feet were moving before my brain registered what I was doing. I choked. With barely a beat passing I was already out the door and walking to my bicycle. Not even looking back as I pulled it up and got on, pulling off my bag to put the burger in and zipping it up. Fingers tightening on the handlebars I quickly peddled off.
My legs burned as I cycled, breath heaving as I peddled as quickly as my legs could carry me, 'Great job Harls, your one chance to talk to him. Alone. In a mostly empty diner, late at night. Perfect time. Yet you gotta fuck it up.' My mind kept spinning with insults, hands gripped so hard my knuckles were white. I cussed myself out the rest of the ride home until I was back at my door. I shook my head and let out a frustrated growl. 'You had one job. Just one. What the fuck Harley.'
"Fuck." I swore quietly, apparently my new favorite word lately. I pulled my bike up to the trailer and leaned it idly. The kickstand didn't work, so I didn't bother doing much else with it. Dusting off my hands I went to the door, pulling open the screen I decided not to even bother getting my keys out and just turned the knob, of course the door swung open.
"Got your food." I said as I kicked off my boots and pulled her to-go bag out, tossing the paper bag lightly on the counter, heading back to my room immediately and didn't listen for her thanking me, it's just been a long ass night, flopping onto my bed I dropped my bag and plugged in my phone, letting out a deep sigh I peeled my jeans off and tossed my jacket and t-shirt onto the floor, leaving just my underwear on to sleep in, I really didn't care, my lack of courage had soured my mood immensely and I just couldn't deal with all of it tonight, pulling my blanket up over me I rolled over and attempted sleep.
"Harley!" My mother shouted, shaking me and jolting me into sitting up, eyes blurry and confused, "What's going on?" I mumbled in concern, looking around my room and at the window, still dark.
"They found a body!" She cried, pulling her coat on.
"What do you mean they found a body?" 'What the fuck, a body? Where, who?' My mind was spinning more than it was earlier, oh yeah, that happened, haha; I'd almost forgotten. Leaning over I checked my phone, only slept for a little while.
"Come on." She encouraged, pulling on her boots.
"I'm goin' I'm goin'." I groaned, pushing the blankets off and getting up, rubbing at my eyes for a second to ease the grogginess. Pulling back on my jeans and t-shirt, grabbing my jacket as I went, she was already grabbing her stuff and ready to leave as I rushed.
We both went out into the kitchen, me grabbing my keys on the way and locking the door as she went ahead of me to our small white car, only two doors so you had to awkwardly pull up the passenger seat if anyone else was riding with us.
"It was found on the shore of Sweet Water River, apparently the sheriffs son or something." She filled me in on what she knew as we sped off, not above the speed limit, but definitely pushing it. I wasn't exactly ready to rush to a murder scene or anything, although that'd have to be one of the most interesting things that's happened in this town ever I'd bet. Next to maybe that raven haired boy in the diner, he's pretty damn interesting, at least I thought so, hoping deep down that maybe he didn't have a girlfriend or anything, or wasn't gay, I kind of wanted a chance at him, maybe a lil' more than kinda but hey, a girl can dream?
My infatuated thoughts were shattered by my mother hitting the breaks, pulling onto the side of the road and putting the car in park. Glancing around just as the sun was coming up over the hills, many other cars scattered about, police cars, an ambulance with it's back doors wide open, I recognized the coopers climbing out of a car and heading down the bank where many other people were standing about, Betty Cooper in particular standing out in an almost baby pink dress, it was cute.
My mother wasted no time in joining them with me hurrying to keep up with her curiosity. It's not that I didn't want to know, but damn did it seem wrong for all of us, rushing so quickly to see the dead body they apparently found.
"Oh god." She muttered, me peeking around her to look as she found a spot further down, right behind the yellow tape, I kept up where I was. Fog hung low over the river and the mountains surrounding Riverdale, chilly early morning air stung my face and blew my hair about, and sticking out the most in this quaint little scene, was a bright yellow body bag being hauled up from the shore and to the ambulance parked beside us, the Blossoms standing closest.
Gasps were shared around between groups of civilians, everyone watching as they brought the body up and loaded it into the ambulance. Movement to my right had me looking up, none other than the boy I couldn't keep my mind off quite well enough, yeah I hadn't met a whole lot of the others, but a little crush wouldn't hurt anyone.
Wearing the same thing as he had earlier, messenger bag slung over a shoulder, flannel around his waist as he walked across the top of the bank, heading away it looked like, I wasn't sure, 'Probably going to go write some more.' I mused, if that's the case he just got a whole lot more material to work with.
