Quinn woke up in a much better mood than the day before. Still early even for a day off but it was a good morning. Jay had said he was going to come around before his shift started. He was going in a little bit later today. She decided to make breakfast.
She had put a pot of coffee on and was busy making pancakes. She'd put her Spotify throwback playlist on and was dancing around the kitchen to Nelly and Kelly.
"No matter what I do, All I think about is you, even when I'm with my boo, Boy you know I'm crazy over you" She sang along with the track.
"Don't tell Jay that"
Quinn jumped and almost lost her pancake mix.
"Don't do that" She said with a hand to her chest "I thought you were on shift?"
"It starts at 8" He told her pouring a cup of coffee "So is it show every morning?"
"Do you want me to tell Gabby what you watched last night?" She warned.
"Ok" He laughed putting his hands up in mock defense.
"You're gone for 24 hours, right?" She asked resuming her task.
"Yeah 24 hours on, 72 off" He said taking a piece of bacon that was ready on the plate.
She glared at him.
"Connor wasn't kidding" He laughed.
"I'm going to New York tomorrow" She told him changing the subject "So you've got the place to yourself until Sunday night"
"What are you doing there?" He asked.
"I'm going to see a show" She replied simply, the I had a daughter at 16 and still keep in touch just not as her mother conversation was a little too much to drop on someone while they were heading into work.
She heard a knock at the door.
"I'll get it" Kelly told her picking up his travel mug and bag "I'll see you later"
Kelly said Hi and Bye to Jay on his way out of the door. Jay smiled as he shut the door.
"You made me breakfast?" He asked.
"Who said it's for you?" She teased.
"I've missed you" He said reaching for a piece of bacon.
"Touch it and die" She warned swatting his hand "It'll all be ready in a minute"
"You're scary sometimes you know that?" He asked kissing her cheek and grabbing the bacon while she was distracted.
"Well aware" She laughed plating up the pancakes.
He carried the plates over to her little dining table she had set with juice and coffee.
"So, I didn't know you knew Kelly that well" He said sitting down.
"I don't really" She shrugged "But he seems nice, I think we'll be friends"
"Great friends" He muttered.
"Jay if it's a problem for you" She sighed.
"It's not" He reassured her squeezing her hand "Ignore me"
"So, I guess it's a pretty big case you're working on" She said changing the subject.
"I can't really talk about it" He told her.
"I know that" She said "All I ever need to know is that you're ok"
"I'm actually going under cover" He told her looking up nervously.
"So, what does that mean exactly?" She asked
"That I won't be around for a while" He replied.
Quinn paused for a moment trying to take it in.
"So deep under cover?" She asked "No contact"
"It's part of the job" He explained.
"It doesn't make it easier" She said softly.
He walked round the table to kneel down beside her taking her face in his hands.
"I'll call you when I can" He told her "And I'll be safe I promise"
Quinn closed her eyes as he kissed her. She snaked her arms around his neck to pull him closer. She wanted to make the most of their time together. He picked her up her legs around his waist and carried her through to the bedroom.
As they lay there afterwards with her head on his chest, she couldn't help but wonder if it would always feel like this or if she would get used to it. She knew there was risk with his job. She'd seen plenty of cops who'd been shot in the ED.
"I don't want you to go" She sighed as his phone buzzed.
"The part I hate is leaving you" He said kissing the top of her head before answering the phone "Sarge"
Quinn pulled the sheet up around her drawing her knees up to her chest as Jay sat up.
"I'm on my way" He said clicking the phone shut.
"Come back to me soon" She told him.
He leant down to kiss her.
"Of course, I will" He told her.
Quinn knew that she couldn't wallow in self-pity or drive herself crazy waiting by the phone to hear from Jay. She got herself dressed and had arranged to go for coffee with April and Sarah. They decided to meet at her favorite café by the waterfront.
She welcomed the distraction hearing all about April and Ethan and all the drama with Ethan's sister. Sarah had started dating April's brother Noah. Quinn had met him once or twice, but he seemed really nice and it was good to see Sarah so excited about someone. She had prewarned April in a text about Jay and to not bring him up in conversation.
"So how was night one with Kelly?" April asked.
April had told her how she had known Kelly since school. They had rebuilt a friendship since she had returned to Chicago.
"Really good so far" She nodded "He's got the place to himself until Sunday so I'm sure he'll enjoy that"
"That's right your New York trip" Sarah said "I'm so jealous I'd love to go"
"When we're fully qualified, we should go" She replied "Someone I went to school with is on Broadway, she's always asking me to go and see one of her shows"
"That would be amazing" Sarah said excitedly making Quinn smile.
"Do all of your school friends do something exciting?" April asked.
"Most of them are in the entertainment industry" She shrugged "They were a talented group of people, but it depends what you think of as exciting"
"Broadway" Sarah answered.
"There was no way Rachel Berry would not achieve her dream" She said smiling fondly.
"What did you want to be when you were younger?" April asked them both.
"Prom Queen" She replied with a straight face.
"A doctor but studying disease" Sarah replied.
Quinn was not surprised in the slightest.
"What about you?" She asked April.
"A doctor" April replied.
"It's not too late" Sarah told her.
"I like being a nurse" April replied.
The talk quickly turned to hospital gossip. Quinn had always thought it was a tv soap line that doctors all fell in love or lust with each other, but Med had its fair share of drama.
She was glad she'd gotten out of the house for the afternoon, but she had to get ready for her vacation days. Any sane person could pack light for one night away, but she wasn't a sane person. She could already picture Connor's face at the size of her case. When she was nervous, she went overboard.
She was excited to see Beth and Shelby. She was going to dinner with Rachel, Kurt and Blaine as well while she was there. She needed dress options and each dress had to have shoes that matched.
Connor was picking her up at around 8 to go to the airport seeing as it was only a short flight. She managed to settle to sleep a little easier than she thought she would, but it was still a rough night, actively trying not to think about Jay wasn't really working. Instead she text him Goodnight knowing he wouldn't get it.
