Nicole and John had been going strong for the last year and three months. She still hadn't told him about her leukemia. Thanks to her anxiety medication she no longer had her nightmares. Nicole was graduating law school next week. She was sad because John wasn't going to be able to make it. Nicole was at school. She got called into the Dean's office. The Dean and a woman who she'd never seen before was there. Nicole sat down.
"Nicole this is Alison Sutton of Sutton & Witherspoon." The Dean said. "She would like to speak to you."
"Hello Nicole." She said.
"Hi." Nicole said.
"I've been going over to student file and your test scores, which are very impressive." "After conferring with my other associates, we've decided that we would like to extend an invitation for you to come work for us." "Provided you can pass the bar exam in New York."
"Really?" "Thank you." "Where in New York are you located?"
"Manhattan."
"When would I start?"
"In two weeks."
"I accept."
"Great." "I'm hopeful that you'll do great things."
Nicole had quit her job at the diner last week in the hopes of getting offered a job. Faith was thrilled for her when Nicole told her she got a job. Nicole couldn't wait to tell John later. She was at home putting away laundry. She opened the dresser where the bottom drawer was John's. She opened the closet to put things away. A few of John's suits were in there. At around nine o'clock that night Nicole was on her laptop looking for places to live in Manhattan. Her Skype ring went off and she pushed the button to connect. John popped up.
"Hi honey." She said.
"Hi baby." He said.
"I have great news." "I got a job today."
"That's great." "Where?"
"Sutton & Witherspoon."
"I'm so proud of you." "I know this is what you've always wanted."
"Thanks."
"I have to move." "Do you just want me to take the stuff you have here with me?"
"Yes." "Where are you moving?"
"Manhattan, New York." "I'm looking for apartments right now."
"I know you hate when I offer but let me help you." "Just until you get your first few checks and get your feet on the ground."
"John." She said not wanting to take him up on it at all. "You know I hate taking your money."
"I know that but let me help you Nicole." "Please, please let me help you."
"Ok." She said reluctantly. "I'm paying you back though."
"I'll send a thousand dollars to your account."
"That's to much."
"Consider it a graduation present."
"I'd rather have you at my graduation."
"I know." "You know how sorry I am that I can't make it."
"I know John." "I just miss you baby." "These passed two months have been killing me."
"You're not the only one."
"I know."
"I have to go but I love you."
"I love you too." "Bye."
"Bye."
It was the day of Nicole's graduation. The ceremony was going on. They were in the R's. Faith was watching from the crowd.
"Did I make it?" She heard someone whisper. She looked over and saw John.
"Yes you did." She said smiling.
"Nicole Spartan." The Dean said a little while later. John smiled. They weren't a loud to applaud but in that moment John had never been more proud.
They were all outside. Nicole hadn't seen John yet. She found Faith. They hugged.
"I'm so proud of you." Faith said.
"Thanks."
"I'm proud of you to." John said from behind her.
"Oh my god John." She said excitedly. She turned around. They hugged and kissed. "What are you doing here?"
"Filming was cancelled today." "After I take you and Faith out to dinner, I have to go to the airport and head right back." "Kim and Randy said to tell you congratulations."
After dinner Nicole and Faith were at the apartment. Faith was helping her pack some stuff.
"Well, you did it." Faith said.
"I did." "You know when I got diagnosed I pretty much wrote myself off." "So to be able to say I did it means a lot."
"Don't you think John would like to know that, how special it is for you and why?"
"Mom please, not today."
"Have you two ever discussed marriage?"
"No." "With our busy schedules we'd be leaving the ceremony to go work as soon as we said I do."
"Do you want to marry him?"
"It's not a necessity but if he asks me someday I'd say yes in a second."
