The next day, the Nazis were still not happy that they couldn't find the Ark yet. Though the Nazis didn't give up since they had to please their leader. So instead of cutting their losses, they basically dug the sand and dirt in so many places in Cairo and kept pushing themselves to find the missing artifact. They didn't care where to look, they just kept trying and trying with all their might.
Sometime during the afternoon, right after her lunch, Irma got bored and stressed out. Even though she was allowed to go back outside since her punishment from the previous day was over, she was bored because she was told to stay in the tent and not help dig, and stressed out that she's just having a very rough time from the mission. So she grabbed her small handbag that contained her diary and pencil as well as some of her books, and snuck out of the tent when no one was watching. Then Irma ran off away from her fellow Nazis since she wanted to be by herself and maybe explore more of the area since the Ark wasn't in the woman's mind at the moment.
"I need to get away from zhese fascists..." Irma said to herself. "But vhat to do until I get back...?"
Irma decides to write in her diary about the previous day. So she sat down somewhere near the actual town, opened her diary, and started to write in it with her pencil.
"Dear Diary..." Irma said as she wrote. "First off, sorry I never completed my last entry, so I vill just start a new vone. Yesterday vas such a bad day for me. Zhe inscription on Arnold's hand from Marion's medallion turned out to not be a real vone. So the Nazis vere digging in zhe wrong place most of the day. Also, I saw zhis giant black spider. It vas hairy and gross! I hate, hate, hate spiders! But since I vas wearing the black gloves zhat is part of mein Schutzstaffel uniform, I picked up the big spider and dropped it down my brother's shirt. I thought it vas very funny, especially the face and small scream he made! But he did not think so. And because of zhat, I vas punished vith not only physical torture vonce again, but I couldn't step foot out of zhe barrack for the rest of the day! Meine güte, it vas very hard to find something to do. I do not know vhy I read meine brüder's copy of "Mein Kampf", vhich is the Führer's book, but I decided to read it since I vas already in a lot of trouble and did not vant to cause more of it. Hitler has such an evil way of thinking, he might start zhe next World War! My Vater died in the past one many years ago, so a second World War vould be horrible!"
She stops writing for a split second due to writing about Nazism was stressing her and making her nervous.
"Vhat am I going to do...?" she asked herself.
The Ark of the Covenant came back into her mind.
"I must find zhat Ark!" she said, putting her diary and pencil back into her small purse. "It has to be here somewhere..."
She pauses, looks down at herself, and said, "But I can't go looking like zhis...The people here vill see zhat I am a Nazi!"
Irma stands up and takes off her uniform's dress coat and side cap since they both contained the swastika symbol and the Schutzstaffel symbol. And since she didn't want people to see the Nazism in her, the German woman placed them on the ground and left them behind as she walked into town. And while walking through the area, near one of the buildings, she saw the Headpiece to the Staff of Ra on the ground next to the front steps of that building.
"The medallion!" she gasped. "Zhe Headpiece to the Staff of Ra!"
She runs over to it and goes onto her knees as she said, "Vhat is it doing over here?!"
Irma picks up the medallion and examines it, then gets surprised since she sees that it contained two sides.
"Arnold vas right..." she said, with a small gasp as she flips the medallion. "There is another side of it. It's double-sided!"
Irma looks down at her little purse and smiles sneakily.
"Now I can find zhe Ark..." she said, with a little laugh. "Now zhat I have Marion Ravenwood's medallion..."
She opens her handbag and gets excited as she says, "Ooooh, my fellow Nazis vill be so proud of me!"
But before she could place the medallion into her handbag, someone's hand quickly got a grip of the medallion while Irma was still holding it. Irma slowly looked up and saw who was trying to get the medallion out of the woman's possession. It was Indiana Jones!
Irma saw that it was the man Major Toht has told her about, which made her very surprised. But since she didn't want to seem like a Nazi to Indy, she tries to hide her German accent.
"Uhhh...Hello there, sir," Irma said, doesn't speak in her natural way. "Can I help you?"
"I'm looking for the Ark of the Covenant," said Indy.
"Ark of...the Covenant?" Irma said, pretending to somewhat not know of the ancient artifact. "Oh! That box that looks like gold?"
"That's right," said Indy.
"It means well to the Jews, yes?" said Irma. "Or was it the Christians...? Probably the Jewish."
"That medallion helps find it," said Indy. "It's the Headpiece to the Staff of Ra. And you seem to have found it."
He then wonders, "Why do you have it in your hands? Are you looking for it, too?"
Irma was nervous to tell him the truth. She didn't know what to do or what to say.
Meanwhile, back with the Nazis, Major Toht was walking towards the tent to check on Irma since that's where she would be while the searching and digging was happening. But when he entered the tent, his little sister wasn't there. She was gone!
"Irma," said Major Toht. "Irma!"
He runs back outside.
"Colonel! Gobler!" Major Toht said, running to the two men. "Irma is missing! She's not in zhe tent!"
"Gobler!" Colonel Dietrich said to Gobler. "Go into town und look for Fräulein Irma. And bring her back here!"
"Jawohl!" said Gobler.
Gobler goes off to find Irma.
Back with Irma and Indy, Irma still hadn't told Indy the truth on why she was here. And this was making Indy suspicious.
"Who are you?" he asked Irma. "What are you doing here?"
"Well, it's a very long story, you see..." said Irma.
Just then, Marion entered the scene.
"What's going on, Indy?" Marion asked Indy.
Marion notices Irma on the ground in front of Indy. She was shocked to see that it was the same woman who grabbed her in the Raven while in Nepal. But because Irma never said anything during that encounter, Marion didn't know what her name was. Yet she was able to recognize Irma by just her thick eyeglasses and hair style.
"Hey!" Marion said to Irma, as she pointed at the German woman. "You're that girl who grabbed me back in Nepal!
"No I'm not...!" said Irma, trying to lie.
"Yes you are!" said Marion. "Admit it!"
Knowing that she's been caught, Irma sighed and said, "Okay, I am...But I had to do it!"
Marion sees her medallion in Irma's hands as she said, "Hey! That's my medallion! Give it back!"
"I don't think so!" Irma said, going back to her true accent. "I found it, so I keep it!"
She then goes to say, "You know vhat they say…Finders keepers, losers veepers!"
"Grrr!" said Marion.
Nearby, Gobler was looking around for Irma. Then he turned a corner and sees Irma interacting with Indy and Marion. Irma didn't see the Nazi soldier, but he saw her. Indy noticed the Nazi soldier and speaks to Irma again.
"By the looks of that Nazi over there," Indy said, "it sounds like you're in a lot of trouble."
Irma quickly freezes as she said, "Vhat Nazi...?"
She sees Gobler a few feet away and does a hard gasp as she said in her head, "I think they see zhat I am gone! And Gobler vas sent to look for me!"
Irma stands up and speaks out loud, "Uhhh...Bye!"
She runs off with the medallion still in her hands.
"Indy, that girl has my medallion!" said Marion. "She's running off with it!"
"Let's get her!" said Indy.
Indy and Marion go after Irma, while the German woman ran as she had the medallion in her grasp.
"I cannot let zhis go!" Irma said to herself. "I have to find zhe lost Ark!"
Suddenly, Irma tripped on a rock in the sand and fell forward onto the ground. She wasn't hurt since the sand broke her fall and helped her landing. And because of that, she lost her grip on the medallion and drops it as it falls onto the ground and rolls back to Indy and Marion. But when she lifted her head back up, in front of her were two of the Nazi soldiers, who were near Gobler looking in the town.
"Uh oh…" said Irma, knowing that she was in trouble again. "I'm in big trouble…Again…"
The two soldiers lifted her off the ground and started to carry her back to where the Nazis were.
"Hey, let me go!" said Irma. "Put me down!"
"You've got a lot of explaining to do, Fräulein!" said Gobler, holding onto Irma's uniform jacket and side hat she left behind. "Come vith me!"
"Yes Major..." Irma said, showing no fear.
Gobler and the two Nazi soldiers bring her back to the digging site, where she was now face-to-face with Colonel Dietrich once again.
"I can never get away from him, can I...?" Irma said in her head.
"Vell Irma," said Colonel Dietrich. "Vhat do you have to say for talking to our enemies, zhe Americans?"
"Zhe medallion vas on the ground," said Irma. "And they went after me for it! Then I dropped it...But I didn't mean to lose it!"
"No excuses, you clumsy voman!" said Colonel Dietrich, all mad. "Now go back into zhe tent and think about vhat you've done. You vill have a nice talk vith Major Toht once I go get him."
"Colonel," said Irma, "I-"
"March Soldatin!" said Colonel Dietrich, pointing to the tent.
Irma sighs and marches back into the tent. And once Major Toht arrived, Irma was standing in a corner of the tent, with her feet together and holding her arms behind her back while standing up straight. She heard her brother walk in, but wasn't looking at him.
"Vell Irma...?" said Major Toht, looking straight at her.
Irma stood silent.
"I'm vaiting..." said Major Toht.
Irma took a deep breath and said, "I...I spoke to Dr. Jones..."
"Dr. Jones?!" said Major Toht, in a shocked voice. "Our enemy?!"
"Ja…" said Irma, quietly.
"Irma Odetta Toht, how could you?!" said Major Toht, getting angry. "Zhis is very serious! I cannot have you interacting vith zhe enemy!"
"Vhy can I not?" asked Irma.
"Because the Führer does not like traitors..." said Major Toht. "Talking to zhe enemy vill make Hitler believe zhat you are on their side and not his."
"But I am not a traitor!" said Irma, looking up at Major Toht. "I am not on Dr. Jones' side, same vith Marion Ravenwood. I'm on your side, Arnold..."
"Then you're going to have to prove it to me, now won't you," said Major Toht.
"How am I supposed to do zhat?!" asked Irma.
"Lead us to zhe Ark, Irma!" said Major Toht. "It's not zhat hard to do!"
"But I do not know vhere it is!" said Irma.
She paused and said, "You know, Arnold...I almost got zhe medallion since I found it in the middle of town. But...Dr. Jones and Marion took it from me..."
"They vhat?!" said Major Toht, unhappy.
"Vell, it vasn't mine anyway..." said Irma.
Major Toht angrily slaps her in the face with his hand as he shouted "Dummkopf!"
"Autsch..." said Irma, rubbing her cheek.
The German woman got mad and formed a fist with her hand as she tried to hit her brother, but Major Toht quickly grabbed his sister's wrist before she was even able to strike him. Irma gasps as she sees that her brother stopped her hand.
"You should think twice before striking a Gestapo agent, dear sister..." warned Major Toht.
Irma angrily showed her teeth as she growled a bit. But of course, this did not scare Major Toht at all.
"You think that scares me?" Major Toht asked.
"No…" said Irma, looking down. "It does not…"
"Then think twice before you cross me!" said Major Toht.
Irma raised her head up and said, in a fearless voice, "I'm not afraid of you...Major Arnold Ernst Toht!"
"Oooh, you said my full name!" Major Toht said, sarcastically. "I'm so scared!"
Irma sighs as she shakes her head.
"Zhat is enough!" said Major Toht. "Let's find zhat Ark!"
"Fine!" said Irma, yanking her arm out of her brother's grip.
She then bent forward and points her finger very close to her brother's face as she said to him, "I vill show you zhat I can do things, Arnold...I will find zhat Ark and bring it back to Berlin just for Hitler, our Führer. And nobody vill stop me unless I say so! You vill see, Arnold…You vill see…!"
"As I've said before," said Major Toht. "Prove it!"
"Oh, I vill!" said Irma. "And I vill show you! Just you wait, Arnold…JUST! YOU! WAIT!"
