Author's Notes: Three years? Three fucking years? What the F U C K. I'm 22. There are 7 volumes. Hm.
Anyway here's this.
Weiss held in her excitement to the best of her abilities, but on the inside she was so happy she felt like she could explode in a ball of warmth and sunshine. Perhaps it was the fact that, coincidentally, their workload was all but nonexistent today, of all days, allowing for festivities to proceed unhindered.
Everyone had came and went, the day winded down. But the happiness never went away. Weiss felt that just seeing Ruby smile made everything in her life worth it.
Songs had been sung, food had been eaten, laughs shared… And while the day hadn't been perfect, only marred perhaps by the lack of cake (Yang had forgotten), it was enough for Ruby to spend time with all of her closest friends.
Still, Yang had insisted on cake for the birthday girl on this, the most important of birthdays, and had promptly dragged Blake along with her to find the ultimate cookie cake.
Weiss and Ruby were the only ones left at the party, if you could consider the party as still going on at that point.
Despite the day having been quite fun, Weiss felt that her own parties in recent years felt different. And indeed, Ruby's parties in the years prior never quite felt like this one either.
The only thing she could think of that was different was… Well. She smiled to herself, walking over to where she had hidden the small but prettily decorated box. Slightly nervous, but excited beyond belief, she quickly took it over to her girlfriend, who was sitting with a big, dumb grin on her face on her bed.
"Hey, I… Remember when I said the necklace wasn't my only gift?" Weiss said, taking a seat next to Ruby. The younger girl instantly sidled up to the heiress, wrapping her in her arms as best she could in their current position. "I know that probably came across like I was being cheesy, what with the kiss afterwards but… I knew something dumb was going to happen," Weiss laughed. "Let's be real, I kind of figured Yang might forget the cake."
Ruby giggled at this, resting her head in the crook of Weiss' neck. "This always happens. Ever since I can remember she insists on being the one to get the cake, but then she always forgets. She does find amazing ones the day after, though." Ruby shifted, moaning softly as she inhaled deeply. Weiss felt a little self conscious all of a sudden about her choice of perfume. "So… what is this?" She asked, glancing down at the box in Weiss' hands.
"Well, open it and find out." She passed the box over to Ruby, who took it so gently it was as if she were afraid of damaging the contents. Perhaps she sensed that it might be fragile, or perhaps she just so treasured everything that Weiss could possibly have given her.
"Weiss," Ruby gasped out as she opened the box, her smile growing brighter somehow. Weiss felt her ears go red. "Did you make this yourself?"
Inside the box was a cake. A small cake, probably only big enough for two people to share, both having two decently sized slices Weiss worried if her noticing immediately that it wasn't store bought was a good thing or bad thing.
"I know it isn't perfect or anything, I've never baked anything before," Weiss admitted with a sheepish smile that was put of character for her. But then again, her character wasn't really built to withstand moments like this. She had never felt so weak in front of someone before. Never been brought to her knees by rampant emotion before now.
"No, it's perfect. The cuts are even perfect. Seriously, how do you cut a cake without ruining the icing. I can barely tell you even sliced it!" Ruby praised, absolutely beaming. Weiss wanted to hide her face, but she managed to brave it out. She didn't want to tell Ruby that she just used a really, really thin knife and got lucky with the icing. "But…" Ruby picked up the fork that was slotted in a little convenient niche on the box. "Where's the other fork? Are you not having any?"
Weiss wondered if she could gather the strength to do this. She had wondered all day. But when the time came, it seemed so natural and not at all a challenge to take the fork from Ruby's hand, stab a bite onto it, and offer it to her as if she were a more servant, servicing a goddess.
Ruby blushed, but she didn't look away. She just opened her mouth, because that's all she could do. She wouldn't deny Weiss. She couldn't. Without even thinking she leaned toward the fork and took the bite off of it.
Weiss felt her heart flutter at the sight. She breathed out a nervous chuckle. "H-happy bi-" but she got no further than that.
Ruby leaned forward and captured her lips in a kiss. A deep kiss, one that spoke of mutual understanding and a deepening relationship. With this one kiss, they had moved further. They had breached over so many lines in the past months together. Holding hands, cuddling, sleeping in the same bed; saying I love you. And then their first kiss. But that seemed so distant, so long ago from this very moment.
The cake was an integral part of the kiss, the flavor being shared between the two of them as it melted away, a confession made from pure sugar. Sweetness begat fiery passion that lasted between them seemingly longer than it should have. The kiss had only occupied thirty seconds, but to them it had been minutes. Or maybe hours. Days. They didn't know. Couldn't agree on one set amount of time. At least, not with their bodies reacting so hotly to one another.
Weiss panted. "Birthday. Happy birthday…" she finally forced out. Ruby white happily placed her head down onto Weiss' lap, using it as a pillow as she looked up into her eyes.
"It was. Thanks to everyone. But, especially you," Ruby said with a smile, her eyes closed and her breathing gentle. "I'm so happy that you're with me."
Weiss reached to lock her hands with hers, leaning down to place a much more chaste kiss on her forehead. "And I'll never leave, if at all possible. That's a promise."
