This is the final chapter to Guarding the Enkeli. It's a biggy and hopefully brings everything to a close. I hope you enjoy! Please review and let me know what you think. I save all my reviews in my email so I can go back and look at how much people enjoy the story. It helps when the self doubt creeps in. Or the fear I won't do the story justice. So please, review! I love each and everyone of them. They mean so much to me!

Here it is!

Chapter 21

"When I was six my parents decided to stop moving around. They never said why. All I know is that we found a place to stay longterm. Not long after that… my wings started to come through."

"Wings?" The Detective repeated in an unsure tone.

"Yes." Carlisle confirmed.

"I didn't know we were in danger. Not until the day when a group of men came to our house with guns drawn. They broke in and killed my parents. I was sure they were going to kill me too, but instead they snatched me up and took me away."

"Do you know where?"

"No." Bella said, shaking her head. "I was so young and afraid. I just know we drove for a long time. And I remember falling asleep for a while in the back of an SUV.

When I arrived at the institution I was given a room with a bed, toilet and basin. I mostly just laid around and played with the few toys they'e given me. Every now and then I'd be examined and they'd run tests on me.

I remember a lady coming in once a day or so and reading to me. We did some math as well sometimes too. It wasn't until The Doctor came along that things started to get really bad. Every day I was poked and prodded. They did experiments and made me fly until I collapsed. And the lady who read to me stopped coming to my room.

As I got older, The Doctor asked me about my parents. I remembered so little, but I knew my parents had wings. I can picture them now. The Doctor wanted to know if I could pass the 'wing gene' along. Or if both parents needed to have it. It was his most important test, or so he would say. He told me frequently that he would be the one to find the key to my gift."

"Did he rape you?"

Bella shook her head.

"How then?"

"Artificial insemination." Carlisle informed The Detective.

"I was pregnant not long after the first time. Although, at the time I didn't really know what that meant. I had no idea what was going on. All I knew was that I was throwing up and feeling sick a lot, getting bigger and bigger, and I started to feel something moving around in me.

There was a nurse, she explained it to me one day after I had a panic attack. I didn't even know what was going on."

Bella tried her best to know show how much the story was getting to her, but the catch in her throat gave her away.

Carlisle reached around and gave Bella's shoulder a squeeze. Reminding her that she wasn't alone.

"I decided then and there that I needed to get out. I had no idea what the real world was like. But I knew it had to be better than how I was living.

One night, after I'd given birth, I started making a weapon out of my toothbrush. I knew I'd need something because the guards had a multitude of things they used to hurt me with. And then the next day, when they were forcing me to fly, I used the toothbrush to cut the rope loose. A man, one of the guards, tried to stop me. He managed to wrestle me down to the ground and attempted to cut off my wings, but I got away. I flew and flew until my wings gave out. I lived on the streets for some time. Always moving at night and sleeping during the day.

And then one night," Bella remembered with a soft smile on her lips, "Esme and Carlisle found me. They took me to Edward's house and fixed Lucy and I up. They've been caring for us ever since.

Not long ago, I got the sense that I was being followed. I wanted to run, but Esme and Edward convinced me to stay, that we were safer with them. They were right, I would have been taken much sooner if I was on the streets. Edward suggested hiring a security guard, to help with my anxiety. His brother, Emmett runs a security firm with his wife, Rosalie. Marcus was shadowing me and confirmed my worst nightmare. They'd found me and were watching me. We took all the necessary precautions in order to keep Lucy and I safe, but they managed to force us off the road, where they snatched Lucy and I.

It was terrifying. I didn't think we'd make it this time. Or get the chance to escape. I knew they wouldn't let me slip away again.

And that brings us to now." Bella finished with a heavy sigh.

"How about Victoria Roads?" The detective asked uncertainly, looking at a piece of paper in front of him.

"Vic?" Bella asked, confused. What did she have to do with anything? "The employee at Alice's store?"

"Yes, this woman." He said, turning the paper around so that Bella could see a mug shot of a woman with bright red curly hair, scowling at the camera.

"What about her?"

"Well, she came up on the phone logs of one of the men who took you. The one with the blonde hair. We think she was giving him information about your movements and Marcus' at the store. We're not sure if they were in a relationship before hand or if it started up to get to you. We're thinking the latter, since she'd never had contact with you before you started working with Alice, and the contact had just recently started."

"Huh." Bella said in response. Mulling over everything the detective had said. She knew Vic didn't particularly like her, but to purposely do something like that made an overwhelming sense of betrayal fill Bella's heart.

"Why?" Bella asked, sadly. Looking down at the table "I didn't even know her. And Lucy!" She gasped. "She's innocent in all this. What kind of person knowingly endangers a child? A baby?" Bella was breathing hard by the time her rant was over.

Carlisle reached across and enveloped Bella in a hug.

"I don't know, sweet girl." He murmured. "All I know is you're both safe and that all this is over. You don't need to worry anymore."

"The man, we think he was manipulating her." Detective Martin said after a moment. "Or maybe even threatening her. We aren't sure at this point. Ms. Roads is being very tight lipped about her involvement." He explained.

"What do you know about the place I was being held at?" Bella asked. Carlisle gave her a squeeze and then released her, he knew she needed answers.

"Not much. It was deserted when we found you. Except for a few guards and The Doctor."

"That seems… odd." Carlisle responded. Pausing to find the right word. "I would have thought he would have the place well guarded. A fortress almost."

"We think he wasn't going to stay long in the US with you. That he was just using the building as a temporary place to hold Lucy and Bella so he could get everything organized.

And it looks like they weren't exactly prepared. They were rushed, not expecting to find you so quickly, maybe? The guards were upset, too, because they didn't know a baby would be involved.

Kidnapping a woman wasn't morally questionable to them, but a baby… apparently that was too far. The Doctor was having to explain the situation with a lie to them. One guard told me The Doctor said you were his daughter that had run away and was an addict who refused to be treated. The guard said he didn't know about the baby until you were taken, which was why he never said anything to the guards about Lucy.

From talking with some of the guards, they didn't believe The Doctor's story. But we will have to wait and see." Detective Martin finished.

"So what happens next?" Bella asked after a moment.

"Well, we're charging the men who took you with kip-napping both of an adult and a minor. Lucy's involvement is part of the reason the guards are talking. They aren't loyal to The Doctor because they think he was hiding Lucy from them.

The charge is much heftier when a minor involved. And they would not of agreed if they knew the stakes were higher. And The Doctor knew that. Which is why they are so upset with him. They'll likely plead out since the evidence is air tight.

The guards at the building…" he trailed off, "that's harder. A few of them are saying they never saw you, or were told about what they were guarding. Which is a likely story and might hold up in court. They were simply ignorant to the situation. But the building did have cameras, and few of them are seen checking on you. We're thinking a conspiracy/aiding and embedding charge for them, reckless driving for the men who took you, resulting in the harm of a minor and adult, and aggravated vehicular assault against both an adult and a minor."

Carlisle nodded his head. Agreeing with the Detective, Bella assumed. She was starting to get a little lost in the jargon.

"And how about the man at the center of all this? The Doctor?" Carlisle asked.

"The Doctor… Well he will have a multitude of charges. Like I said, there were cameras in the building, another reason why we think this was a rush job - they didn't even disable them. And the statements you've given have been very extensive.

While you were waiting, we able to look briefly look back into your past with the documentation found at The Doctor's hideout, which we will also be able to use against him.

The charges so far I'm thinking are going with include conspiracy to commit a kid-napping, kidnapping of an adult and minor, violent crimes and aggravated assault, possession of schedule II, III, IV, and V drugs without a medical license, possession of illegal drugs including methamphetamines and cocaine, administration of scheduled drugs and illegal drugs without permission to an adult and minor - "

"He put that stuff in Lucy?" Bella gasped, her breath coming in quick pants.

"Yes, the blood that was taken earlier from both of you showed a cocktail of drugs. We think it was to keep her quiet. We didn't find any of the drugs he used to torture you in her system though, thankfully."

Bella's body sagged somewhat with relief. She'd been made to stay quiet, but not in pain.

Detective Martin continued with the crimes The Doctor was being charged with.

"Insemination without consent, medical testing without consent, medical experimentation, white color crimes such as fraud and forgery because he had a fake license and prescription pad on him, which is obviously how he accessed the scheduled substances. Blackmail, because we know he used Lucy against you. And lastly from what I can think of will be bribery, for the guards at the institution and the building you were just being held at." The Detective finished with a loud exhale.

Bella and Carlisle just starred at the Detective for moment.

Carlisle cleared his throat some time later and said, "that's all very extensive. And thorough, and you're confident you won't need to mention Bella's… condition?"

"Surprisingly, The Doctor doesn't mention it in his notes. From what I could gather. He simply refers to Bella's wings as "her gift." Makes him sound a bit looney to be honest."

"Will he use an insanity defense?" Carlisle asked, with concern laced through his question.

"He might…" The detective trailed off, thinking to himself. "But, even then he will serve time for the crimes he committed. Just because he might use that defense, doesn't excuse him for all he did.

Besides.

The insanity defense has a lot to do with knowing the difference between right and wrong. He knew it was wrong to kidnap Bella and Lucy. I know he knew that because he hid them away and lied about Lucy's existence to the guards."

Carlisle nodded thoughtfully. As did Edward, who was still diligently standing behind the glass, listening to the charges this man would face. The justice that he would receive for his heinous behavior.

"That's quite the series of charges." Carlisle said, after some time.

"I feel confident that you will be able to uphold the NDA and charge this man for what he did."

Detective Marin nodded his head. "I understand why I had to sign the NDA. But I truly think it would not have been necessary to begin with. But -" He said, holding up a hand to Carlisle who was getting ready to remind him of the situation. "I can see its need. Bella's condition needs to be protected. The Doctor is one of many who would abuse her situation if they had the chance. I don't doubt it. I will take your secret to the grave, my dear." He finished, reaching out to squeeze Bella's hand.

"Thank you." She said simply, hoping he would hear her gratitude.

"Is there anything else you'd like to add to your statement?"

Bella looked to Carlisle to make sure she'd covered everything and then shook her head.

"No, I think that's everything."

"Then I think we're done here. If you remember something else, call me." The Detective said, handing Carlisle a business card.

"I'll be building the case against him mostly on the kidnapping, fraud and forgery, and forced insemination/experimentation with the DA's office. But all the other charges will be in there too. I just want you to know because the press might not mention them and I don't want you to think we aren't getting him for everything we can. It will be a long time before this man breaths free air again, if ever.

I'll keep you updated." He finished. Before standing and walking to the door. "I'll let the other Mr. Cullen in now." He added and then stepped out.

Carlisle helped Bella up, after that, and then began gathering everything he'd bought with him. Including the NDA. Edward made his way into the room as they were heading to the door. He placed his hands on Bella's shoulders, looking over her, before pulling her into his chest and tucking her under his chin.

"Are you okay?" He asked hesitantly.

Bella nodded in response, and Edward felt the movement against his chest.

"Tired?" He asked?

She nodded again.

"Let's get going then."

"Where's Lucy?" She asked, suddenly realizing Edward didn't have her.

"Relax," He told her softly. "She's with Esme out front. She wasn't allowed in the interview like I was, so she said she was take Lucy for me and watch her in the waiting area. That way I could concentrate on you, and everything being said." Edward expalined.

Bella sighed with relief. 'Sorry, I didn't mean to infer you had lost her or something."

Edward smiled down at the woman in his arms. "I know. You were worried about your baby. I understand."

They were met with an anxious but also relieved looking Esme a few moments later. She pulled Bella into her arms, needing the reassurance that she was safe and okay. As Bella stepped away, Esme passed over Lucy, and she looked down into her trusting but tired eyes.

"She was an angel." Esme told Bella before she could ask. "She kept reaching out, looking for you, but I managed to keep her satisfied."

Bella let out a sigh of relief and then hugged her little one closer. She hoped that would be all she would have to do for a while to come.

"Home?" Edward asked, looking to his father.

"Home," Carlisle agreed, putting his arm around Bella and leading her towards the exit. "Are you sure you're okay?" He asked Bella as they left.

She nodded.

"Thank you, Carlisle." Bella said as they got into the car. "I'm so thankful that I had you in there with me."

"Of course, dear."

"You and Esme, I can never thank you either of you enough."

When they made it back to Edward's apartment, the four adults and Lucy sat around the table, discussing the events of the day. Eating their fill of ham and salas sandwiches, made expertly by Esme. They discussed everything that had happened and filled in the gaps each had regarding the days events. Esme was relieved when she heard The Detective had agreed to the NDA. She knew it was an issue her husband was worried about.

It was an enjoyable way for the family to come together. Bella fed Lucy at the table, discreetly as always. And they all smiled at the progress she'd made. No longer was she the bashful girl who'd come into their care unexpectedly. Now she was a confident young woman who was thriving as a mother.

Edward couldn't believe how lucky he'd been. It was only by chance that his parents walked past her that cold and dreary night. And even more lucky that she agreed to come home with them.

Edward had finally found someone he wanted to spend his life with. And although they were moving slow, he relished in the small progress they made together.

As he thought about his love for this amazing woman, he wrapped an arm around her waist and squeezed her into his side. He placed a kiss on Lucy's head, before looking down and kissing Bella's soft lips.

No longer did they have to live in the shadows of society. Plagued by fear and uncertainty. Now they could live in safety and love.

The trial for The Doctor wouldn't be for sometime, but Edward was confident in the system's ability to convict him. Edward would keep his girls' safe either way.

They'd make it through every hardship together.

Thrive together as life went on.

And love together, for as long as they had breathe in their lungs and joy in their hearts.

And that's it! I hope you enjoyed this story.

A huge thank you to for all the support over the last few months. I always had the intention of getting back to this story, I just didn't feel I would do it justice until I was ready. So thank you to those people who stuck around! Y'all are awesome.

I'm not sure if I'll come back to this story later. I always like to leave it open when I finish a story because you never know when the inspiration will hit. So a sequel/epi is possible. But not for a while.

I recently posted a one shot which I promised myself I would not continue until I was satisfied with Guarding the Enkeli. Keep an eye out for future chapters on the one shot. Now that this book is finished I might start on that one.

Thanks again for all the support! Stay safe and stay healthy in these crazy times!
