Chapter 20
.
What William Lambert said shocked agent Fredo. Sheriff Duncan seemed just as suprised when he learned this story. He didn't seem to believe Lambert, but as sheriff it was his job to investigate. The two of them went over to question Carmen Flint. She was watching an old video of Angel in a school play. As far as Gary could tell the school did a version of "Clue" with Angel playing ms Scarlett. There was a fair amount of food out, a number of people seemed to have brought food over so that Carmen wouldn't have to cook dinner on the day of her daughter's funeral. Gary wondered how many would have done this if they'd heard Lambert's story. Carmen seemed suprised to see Duncan and Gary.
.
Carmen: Detectives, do you have any information about Angel's death?
Duncan: Possibly. We have a new lead, we'd like you to come down to the station to help clarify things.
Carmen: Ofcourse, we'll help in any way I can.
Duncan: Good, will Abby be okay on her own for a few hours.
Carmen: Yes, she wants to be alone right now anyway. How can I help?
Duncan: We spoke with William Lambert.
.
The name of William Lambert definitely produced a reaction from Carmen's face.
.
Carmen: You spoke with him?
Gary: Yes we did, you want to guess what he told us?
Duncan: He told us his version of a certain story. Perhaps your version is different. We'd love your help with that, clarifying what exactly might have happenned.
Carmen: I think I should speak to a lawyer before I answer any questions.
.
Although sheriff Duncan had his doubts about Lambert being molested by Carmen, her reaction suggested that she was guilty. Still, she clearly asked for a lawyer, so they had no choice but to comply. They brought her to the police station and called her attorney, Deanna Harris, who agreed to meet them at the police station. In the meantime they were prohibited from asking her any questions. Deanna arrived and conferred with her client. After about an hour Deanna asked them to present the evidence against her client.
.
Deanna: I would like to start off by saying that, whatever my client allegedly did, the statute of limitations has run out on that.
Gary: True, but we can use that as evidence of prior bad acts. You see, we know that Angel was raped a few days before she was murdered, and we know that the perpetrator was a close blood relative. And in case you're wondering, yes, they can tell the difference between male and female DNA. Maybe I should wait until those test results come back, but if you'd like to say something, now would be the time.
Carmen: Okay.
Deanna: Don't say anything.
Carmen: They have the evidence, what's the point anymore?
Deanna: I'd like to see the evidence you allegedly have against my client.
Duncan: Fair enough. This is doctor Hayward's report confirming that Angel was involved in a sexual assault three days before she was murdered. They are testing whether it's male or female right now.
Carmen: I want to confess, Angel deserves justice for what I did to her. My father raped me, since I was seven or eight years old. When I finally left home, I found myself attracted to young people. Not six year olds, but maturing. I babysat for William when he was 13. I knew it was wrong, but I couldn't help myself. I molested him, that's how I got pregnant. I moved here, wanted to put the past behind me, give the baby a fresh start. I fought the urges for years, but I couldn't stop forever.
Duncan: Are you saying you molested Angel?
Carmen: Yes, I molested Angel, and Abby. I screwed up. I should have gone to Michael's meetings, but I was too scared.
Gary: Why should you have gone to Michael's meetings?
Carmen: It's a support group, for people with those feelings.
Duncan: So you're saying that Angel was hanging out with convicted child-molestors, because she was afraid?
Carmen: Afraid she would turn out like me, yes. Michael helps people control these desires, people like Angel who never acted on it, and people like Rusty, who didn't want to do it again.
Gary: Did you murder Angel?
Carmen: I am responsible for her death yes. Angel told me that she would kill herself before she ever did that to another person. I don't know if it was because she inherited my genes, or because I molested her, but my daughter committed suicide because of me.
