Sorry this chapter is WICKED short. I am out of ideas and exasperated from being home all day. I am doing my best. Next chapter will be longer, I promise.
About three weeks later, I get a letter. From Washington. I'm thrilled.
"Eliza!" I exclaim as I go out to the yard to find my wife and tell her the news. She's taking down our laundry from the clothesline. I wrap my arms around her waist from behind and lift her up. She shrieks and laughs.
"What's gotten into you!?" she giggles as I set her down. She turns and looks at me and I kiss her deeply. "Alex, sweetheart!"
"Read this." I shove the letter in her hands and hug her as she reads it.
"A battalion?" she mutters.
"Yes! Isn't it purely amazing!" I kiss her cheek.
"But the baby…"
"We have months, Eliza. The last battle of the war and I'll have a battalion of my own." I smile as I kiss her cheek again and bury my face in her neck, kissing there too.
"Alexander… What if something happens to you?"
"Hey." I turn her face up to mine and see the tears forming in the corners of her eyes. "It's going to be okay. I'm dropping you off at your parents so you'll be safe."
"I'm going to miss you so much!" She wraps her arms around my neck and whimpers.
"I'll write to you. I promise."
She nods slowly. "Congratulations. I'm so proud of you."
I smile. "Thank you. That means so much to hear you say." I kiss her.
"When do you leave?" she asks.
"A few days."
She sighs. "I love you."
"I love you too."
