Chapter 20: Since When Were You and Sasuke So close?

After spending a long weekend at Brown with Naruto checking out the campus, Sasuke lay in his bed feeling exhausted. The past few years had gone by so quickly and in the space of that time so much had changed. There was no indication that his brother would ever return and his whole life was about to change once again. He felt a little better now that Naruto knew about what had happened. If there was one thing his parents did get right, was sending him to a public school. He didn't know what he would've done if he never met Naruto even if it was all a bit messy at the best of times. Sasuke's father had warmed to his choice of accepting the offer to go to Brown in the fall, but he was still on rocky terms with him. He still disapproved of his sexuality believing it is still an act of rebellion, causing him to state how important it is to leave all that behind once he gets to college meaning that he had to break up with Naruto and leave him behind for good. But that was something which was near to impossible for Sasuke. Even if he had to end the relationship, he still needed Naruto in his life regardless. Sasuke worried that if he didn't do as his father asked he won't be able to protect him, especially since he will be too far away to keep an eye on his father. When he thought about it though, Naruto was a strong person physically and he was strategically clever and streetwise. He was more than capable of looking after himself and he was sure not even his own father could even come close to intimidating him.

Sasuke hadn't heard from Naruto since this morning. The blonde had decided to spend some time with his friends and with countless attempts so convince Sasuke to stay around with him, he felt guilty taking up most of his free time away from his friends and being there would just distract Naruto. This gave him a good amount of time to reflect on his decisions and how he should move forward. College was exciting because he would get to meet new people and possibly make new friends with similar interests, but leaving Naruto behind was going to be the hardest thing he's ever had to do. Sasuke had only just got Naruto back and he didn't cope with him being in prison and he wondered if even as much as a long-distance friendship would be enough to keep him from missing him all over again.

Kiba sat pondering the months to come. There was not much he was good at or interested in and felt as though he had little purpose in life.

"There isn't much to do anymore now that school's over with. I honestly didn't plan this far ahead" Kiba joked. "To be honest I kind of wish I didn't waste so much time"

"Yeah, I agree" Naruto responded. "Perhaps it is best that the likes of us are far away from the upstanding members of society anyways" the blonde teased.

"Well speak for yourself, blondie! I happen to be a very respectable young man" he said proudly in a mocking exaggerated tone.

Naruto laughed. Things felt as though they were changing too fast but he knew there was nothing he could do to slow it down. He felt grateful to still have his freedom and to be given what would be his 3rd and last chance to make it work in this society. As long as his father stays away for good this time, there was nothing getting in his way of making a life for himself and making amends with his family.

"How are things at home anyway?" Kiba asked causally.

"Actually pretty good" Naruto responded. "Minato is great and takes care of my mom and my siblings. He's been really good to me too helping me get back on my feet. More than my actual father had ever done for me".

"I'm glad things are good. Your family deserves a break".

Naruto looked over to Shikamaru who was typing away on his computer. He had also just accepted a place into Brown and chances are he may end up taking the same classes as Sasuke. Shikamaru had discussed this with Sasuke when Naruto was in prison during the days he would actually open up to a conversation, he had mentioned the Universities he would be interested in applying for. If it wasn't for Shikamaru he wouldn't have had the strength to apply for them in the first place. Shika was hesitant on telling his best friend about acceptance into the University. He knew how down Naruto was about the whole thing and the last thing he wanted to do was rub in the fact that he would get to see Sasuke every day. Though he was going to find out eventually and if there's one thing Shikamaru hated was keeping secrets from Naruto. That never ends well. He thought it was a shame that Naruto had gotten himself in so much trouble because of how academically clever the guy was. He was pretty much responsible for a good chunk of his classmates' straight A's on particular subjects, even though Shikamaru greatly disagreed with his 'Pay to A' scheme he ran occasionally.

Shikamaru closed his laptop and sighed. "Naruto…" he prompted the blonde to look over once again. "There's something I need to tell you," he said, more seriously. Naruto glanced over and pulled his full attention on his best friend with a mixture of worry and confusion in his eyes. He knew Shikamaru well and something felt like it was bad news he was about to deliver.

After several seconds of silence, Naruto responded, "Well? What is it?"

Kiba looked between the two. There was a black cloud of tension that vacated around the air and it was making him rather uncomfortable. "Look Shika just spit it out!" Kiba butted in.

"Kiba!" the blonde reacted angrily, "Don't be like that"

"It's about University" Shikamaru cut in. "I… um… I just accepted an offer"

Naruto jumped to his feet and hurried over to Shikamaru who still had his hand on the lid of his now-closed laptop. "Well that's brilliant news!" he exclaimed rather proudly. "You had me worried for a second there! So which one are you going to?" the blonde continued with a smile.

Shikamaru looked down at his laptop avoiding eye contact with the blonde. He knew he was being stupid and had nothing to be nervous about. This was Naruto, his best friend. He wasn't going to be mad or upset over something like this, was he?

"Shika come on, tell us!" Naruto said impatiently while reaching over to open his laptop. Shikamaru slapped his hand away stopping him from seeing the screen.

"Shika… what's wrong?" Naruto asked worryingly rubbing his unhurt hand.

"It doesn't matter to us if it's a community university or one of those… uh… nerdy ones!" Kiba joked, "As long as it's what you want we are happy for you". Naruto nodded in agreement and smiled back at him.

He gave the blonde the laptop and watched him as he quickly opened it. His expression changed from a smile to a frown and was not the reaction he wanted. Kiba waved his hands and shouted for him to tell him what was on the screen but all Naruto did was stare at it. Kiba hurried over in annoyance feeling impatient at the lack of response and peered over his shoulder.

"Isn't that where Sasuke is going?" he asked Naruto whilst pretending to understand what was on the email.

Naruto nodded and handed the laptop back to Shikamaru carefully and returned to his seat. Shika was waiting for a response from him as he couldn't tell if he was upset or not.

"I went to Brown over the weekend and you didn't think to mention it?" Naruto asked breaking the silence.

"Naruto… I didn't do it on purpose; I've only just accepted it five minutes ago. Besides, I knew how much of a hard time you are having over Sasuke going to Brown."

"At the time Sasuke hadn't decided which University he was going to. He was torn between several options hence the visit. You don't think that would've been a good time to mention that it would be a possible option for you? You're my best friend Shika" Naruto said protectively.

"Yes, I know. But he mentioned that if there was any way he would have to choose, his obvious choice would always be Brown because that's where… uh," Shikamaru stopped himself before he said something that would really upset him, although that might have been too late.

"What are you talking about Shika?" the blonde asked angrily.

"That's… something you need to talk to Sasuke about"

"And since when were you and Sasuke so close?" Naruto asked, leaving the room too quickly for Shikamaru to respond.

"You really should-" Kiba was interrupted by a delayed door slam, "… should have handled that better"

"I honestly didn't mean to upset him… I thought Sasuke would've told him by now"

"What exactly are you talking about Shika?"

Naruto stared at his phone after deleting several text drafts. Something felt off and weird about the way Shikamaru described his reasoning behind hiding his application and acceptance into Brown. When he saw the acceptance it did shock him a little and a wave of jealously ran through him. But as soon as that passed he would've always been happy and supportive of his best friend that was just in his nature. Shikamaru wasn't one to keep secrets unless he was trying to protect someone. Naruto was interrupted out of his thoughts by a phone call. Sasuke was calling him. Without even thinking about it he rejected the call. There was no way he could have a conversation with him without calling him out, even though he really wanted to know what exactly what Shikamaru was talking about. He turned his phone off and attempted to sleep thinking it would be a better idea to talk to him with a clear head.

Sasuke tried calling his boyfriend one more time but this time it went straight to voicemail. Shikamaru had texted to pre-warn him about what had gone down at Kiba's. It wasn't much of a big deal, something which happened whilst Naruto was in prison. Sasuke was feeling lonely and vulnerable without him and he had nothing to keep him occupied and he just hoped the blonde didn't get the wrong idea. Whenever his thoughts weren't on Naruto, he would have terrible thoughts and dreams about his brother and it got worse the longer it went on. In Sasuke's mind, Naruto was never going to come back into his life. The blonde refused to let him visit so he was unable to get any reassurance and he believed by the time he got out of prison that he would be either long gone at University or someplace else. Nothing in his future was looking to have Naruto in it at all and he knew that the friends that he made, Shikamaru and Kiba that they would also move on with their lives eventually. The only other hope he had was his brother who promised to return for him one day. It was looking more unlikely as years passed and when he moved to public school and met Naruto, he made getting through that a lot easier. Sasuke was no longer lonely and felt like rebelling against his family was the only way to get through it.

His thoughts flashed back to that day he took Naruto to that rooftop. Sasuke was so close to telling him everything about his brother but he just couldn't do it, not there. Dropping out of school to spite his father was the only thing he wanted to do before he even arrived there but Naruto changed everything. Suddenly his problems didn't seem important anymore and he felt like he wanted and needed to spend his energy on helping him instead. He felt bad for kind of thanking Naruto for being so messed up because in a way that saved Sasuke from himself, having someone else to focus on fixing. Not that he would ever be able to explain that to anyone without it sounding somewhat strange but he felt comfort knowing at some point or another, he was needed. When Naruto came back for him during prom, it was the happiest he ever felt and nothing else mattered again. So naturally, everything that he did and felt during that period he was gone had suddenly become irrelevant once more, and every thought decision and action started to fade when Naruto gave him so much love and drowned in it, almost getting lost in the process. Sasuke smiled, knowing how much of an idiot his boyfriend was sometimes.

"Sasuke?" He heard a knock on his door. "Sasuke may I come in?"

"Sure," he said as he threw his phone across his bed.

His mother entered the room with a smile on her face, as usual. "Sasuke dear you have a visitor".

Sasuke watched curiously as Shikamaru walked through the door. "What are you doing here?"

"Have you spoken to Naruto yet?" he asked as his mother close the door behind her.

"He won't answer my calls and I think he switched his phone off because I can no longer get through. What exactly was said?"

"I mentioned that I got into Brown and he went awfully quiet about it"

"Oh congrats"

"Thank you, I think"

"So what triggered the argument?"

"I didn't tell Naruto that I even applied to Brown. When we were all talking about university and I heard you were debating on what to accept, I figured I would hold off telling him"

"Why would you do that?" Sasuke asked, not following his reasoning.

"Well remember what happened when Naruto was in prison?" Shika asked cautiously.

Sasuke nodded his head in response. "What has that got to do with anything?"

"Well, when Naruto told me you got accepted into several schools he asked me if I had heard back from any of the ones I applied for and which ones I put my application in to. Once I told him a few he went on to say about how you were visiting the campus. After that, he cried for a while because he was torn between being so proud of you and trying not to act selfishly by the fact he might have to let your relationship end. Once I calmed him down, I couldn't tell him that I also applied for Brown because I didn't want to upset him"

"Why would that have upset him?"

"Well Naruto gets jealous sometimes and the fact your relationship was depending on your decisions, I didn't want to rub in the fact that I would possibly get to see you every day if I got into Brown too"

"I see…"

"Anyway, after Naruto had seen my acceptance email he questioned me as to why I didn't mention my application there at all, even though I knew that you two were going to check out the campus"

"I can understand why he would get confused and upset…"

"Yeah, I understand too. He didn't quite understand why I didn't tell him at the time he asked me about the universities since you told him you were still torn between them. I got confused and accidentally told him that you were dead set on Brown if you were to be accepted and stopped myself from saying anymore"

"Wow even I'm confused, no wonder he's upset" Sasuke teased. "None of that makes sense unless you were there at the time…"

"Exactly so I wasn't sure it was my place to even attempt to explain the reasoning behind what happened when he was in prison and why I didn't want to upset him about Brown"

"By the sounds of it, he probably thinks we hooked up or something"

"Yeah I worded it wrong," Shikamaru said as he pinched the bridge of his nose in annoyance.

"I need to explain but he won't answer my calls. Should I go round there?"

"I would leave it until morning. It's pretty late as it is and it might be best to talk to him once he has calmed down and had some sleep"

"Yeah, you're probably right"

After Shikamaru left, Sasuke turned on his computer and looked up his internet history from the mid-period of when Naruto was in prison. He had been searching for ways to get in contact with Naruto and he came across an article that mentioned the Uchiha name. A woman that he recognised did an interview with Brown University on what it was like to work for the Uchiha's. Sasuke spent most of the night looking up this ex-employee on the internet. It turns out that she was the one Itachi was trying to date back in the day. This was major for Sasuke because that meant there was a possibility that he knew where to find Itachi. She was the reason why his brother was trying to give up his position as the heir to the company. The girl was resigned when she got into Brown and since they had fallen in love, she wanted Itachi to go with her. Itachi figured it wouldn't be an issue since he could always come back once he finished university and still take over the company when the time came but for some reason, his father disapproved of his relationship and his choices and made it impossible to leave. Sasuke remembered his brother telling him the reason he wanted to leave was to get better and get away from their father after what he did to him but at no time did he say he was going to find this girl again so there was no solid proof that he was living near the university. After hours of looking the girl up, he found no photos of them together on social media and she seemed to be single for the whole time she was there. Since several years had passed, she probably wouldn't be living near Brown University anymore and moved on. He couldn't figure out where she went to after she graduated and he thought that if he visited there, talking to professors, journalists and people who were in contact with her to find out where she ended up going. Sasuke became obsessed over the idea that she could lead him to Itachi and since he didn't have Naruto anymore, he had nothing to lose.

Sasuke stared at his web history not realising how obsessive he had got during that time, constantly searching and looking anywhere possible. He knew he had a hard time being apart from Naruto but he never realised until now how weird and bad it got. He closed his computer and put his head in his arms resting on top of the closed laptop.

"This is… too much"

To be continued.
