Chapter XXIV
''What do you want?'' Anna asked shakily, when her brain finally processed who was standing in front of her. He was the last person she had ever expected at her door.
Green's face looked like he had just survived a war, covered in bruises of all shades, his nose heavily bandaged.
''Where does he keep his files?'' he demanded, his thick voice betraying the fact that he was under the influence of something. Probably a heavy dose of painkillers for his broken nose, Anna thought.
''I told you, I don't know anything about any files, all right?''
''You're lying,'' Green barked, and pushed past her into the flat.
''Hey! Get out!'' Anna demanded, when he walked down the hall and into the sitting room, but he ignored her.
''What did he tell you about me?''
''Who? What are you talking about?'' Anna stared at him. He was starting to frighten her, though she tried not to show it.
''You know exactly what I'm talking about!'' Green shouted, and grabbed her hand. ''You get me those files, you hear me?!?''
''Let go!'' Anna tried to pull her hand away, but his grip was too strong.
''I don't think so.'' He pulled her into his body.
''Let go of me!''
''Now listen to me, you little bitch...'' he hissed into her ear. ''...you're going to do exactly what I say. Or else...''
Anna could feel her entire body trembling. She wasn't just frightened now, she was terrified. Not only of his threats, but of what she realized he was capable of doing to her. John had been right; he was mad! But she tried to maintain a brave front.
''Or else what?'' she asked, defiantly.
Snickering, he pulled her even closer to him, twisted her arm onto her back, grabbed her by the neck with his free hand, and pulled her roughly into a kiss.
''No...let g-...'' Anna tried to push him away, but his size and strength overpowered her. Before she knew it, he had pushed her onto the couch, his heavy body pinning her down.
''GET OFF! HELP!!'' Anna screamed, when he finally pulled his disgusting lips away, but Green quickly covered her mouth with his palm.
''Shut up, you whore! Shut up!''
By this point Anna was panicking. She knew she should do something to fight back, but it was as if her body had frozen. The next thing she felt was his hand going into her pyjama bottoms.
This cannot be happening, she thought, somewhere deep inside herself. Not to me.
''You slut!'' Green hissed, and with that something clicked inside her and the adrenalin finally kicked in. She shoved her hand against his chest and pushed with all her strength. She wasn't going down without a fight, she thought, trying to punch his face.
''I do love when they put a good fight,'' Green grinned and held her pinned under him. But he must have gotten a little too confident, because in the next moment Anna whacked him in the face with her forehead, making him scream in pain. He moved off and let go of her just long enough for Anna to somehow get up and hurl herself toward the door. But once again he was too fast for her.
''You stupid bitch.'' He grabbed her, turned her around, and smacked her on the side of the head. ''Come here!''
''NOOO!! HELP!!!'' Anna screamed, while he pulled her back to the sitting room. By this point her head was starting to swim. She was petrified…and so tired, but kept kicking and fighting as best as she could.
''You can scream all you want. No one will come!'' Green snickered and unzipped his trousers. ''No one!!''
''Noo, please don't.'' Anna cried, still fighting, even though she could feel that he was overpowering her.
''Keep begging!'' he laughed, and was pulling at her pyjama bottoms when the door behind him opened with a loud bang.
Before he realized what was happening, a large, strong hand pulled him off of Anna and threw him against the wall.
''You fucking bastard!!'' was all he heard before a heavy fist pummelled his shocked face over and over again until he collapsed onto the floor.
''You sick son of a bitch!'' John spat, enraged, as he looked down at him. He was just about to pull Green up to hit him again, when suddenly Anna's cries behind him caught his ear.
''Anna?'' he called, but when he turned toward the sound, she was nowhere to be found. Then he heard sobs coming from the corner of the room.
''Anna!''
She was curled up on the floor by the couch, clutching her knees and shaking. Her lower lip was bruised, her t-shirt torn, and just looking at the state she was in, John wanted to finish what he had started with Green. But he didn't.
In a second he was by her side and pulling her close. Anna's arms went around him without any hesitation. She was sobbing so hard that she was gasping for breath.
''It's OK. I'm here. It's over,'' John whispered into her hair, rocking her gently. She looked so tiny to him as he held her against him.
It took almost 15 minutes for Anna's sobs to subside. But John did not let go of her at all. His shirt was soaked with her tears, but he didn't give a damn. The important thing was that she was safe. Thank god he had taken Vera's advice and stopped by Anna's to talk to her.
Without letting go of her, he managed to pull his phone out of his jeans pocket and was about to dial 999 when he noticed that Green had disappeared.
John had no idea when the bastard had managed to sneak out, but his heart told him one thing: Even though he wanted so badly to get up immediately and chase Green down, he knew would not…because there was no way that he could ever leave Anna alone.
