Everyone in the room was silent.
"Mom?" Blaine finally asked.
Mrs. Anderson covered her mouth with her hand and gasped. "Oh, Blainey," she said as she walked over and held her arms out. He turned away from her. "Blaine?" she asked wearily.
He closed his eyes and shook his head. "I can't look at you right now."
Her eyes filled with tears. "We are so sorry. We just couldn't look at your son knowing you'd never get to meet him, knowing that we'd never see you again." She started to hyperventilate. Mr. Anderson came beside her and rubbed her arm, his eyes just as wet.
Blaine grabbed Kurt's hand and held it tightly. "You left my boyfriend to take care of our son all by himself. He didn't have his parents or me. He was still in high school and you made him do it all on his own. You could have helped him."
Mrs. Anderson nodded furiously. "We know and we are so sorry. We made a horrible mistake and we understand if you never forgive us, but please just give me a hug," hiccup, "I've thought you were gone forever. My baby boy." She wrapped her arms around her stomach and tried to catch her breath. Mr. Anderson took her in his arms, held her against his chest and ran his hand down her back.
Blaine bit his lip. He looked over at his parents, who were crying almost hysterically, and sighed. He took his hand from Kurt's and gave it to his mother. A glimmer of hopefulness shined in her eyes as she noticed his gesture and took his hand in hers.
"We've all had a couple of long, hard years," Blaine said. "I just want to have as much of my old life back as possible. It may take a while, but I will forgive you. I understand you probably weren't thinking clearly." He then held his arms out and let her lean into his shoulder. Mr. Anderson went to his other side and placed his hand on his son's back.
Kurt decided they needed some space, so he went to check on his father. When he got there the older man was sitting up in his bed, scrolling through the channels.
"What are you looking for?" Kurt asked, making Burt jump.
He let out a chuckle, then said, "I'm trying to find the Nascar race. It should be on by now."
The corner of Kurt's mouth lifted. Same old dad, he thought.
Kurt walked over and took the remote from his hand. After going through the guide he found the race. He handed the remote back to his father, who immediately turned it off.
"Why did you do that?" Kurt asked.
"I have better entertainment now," Burt said as he tilted his head over to the chair next to him. "Is Blaine asleep again?"
Kurt shook his head as he sat down. "No, his parents showed up and they're having quite the tearful reunion. I wanted to give them some space."
Burt nodded. "Well, that leaves time for you to catch me up on what's been going on in your life, besides the whole becoming a father thing."
"Well, I'm going to school in New York. I also have a wonderful internship there where I get to work with clothing designers, and I have a job at a singing restaurant. It's a busy life, but I love it," Kurt said with a smile.
Burt smiled and reached his hand out to brush down the side of Kurt's face.
"What?" Kurt asked.
"Every day I was away, I dreamed about who you'd be. I thought maybe he's going to a fancy school in New York. Maybe he and that Rachel girl decided to do some theatre thing together. I had so many different ideas in my mind, but they were all of you being happy.
Eventually, I grew worried you weren't able to move on from me and Blaine. I feared you were depressed and gave up on your dreams. I couldn't stop worrying about you, but seeing you now, all grown up, I can see all my prayers were answered."
Oh great, here come the waterworks again, Kurt thought as he reached over and hugged his father. However, his stomach didn't like the jolt, and right before his father could get his hands wrapped around him, he pulled away and headed towards the bathroom.
After emptying the contents of his stomach, which were just a half-eaten bagel and cup of decaf coffee, he sat on the ground and whispered to his abdomen, "You need to give daddy a break. I have enough to deal with without you making me puke all over these hospital bathrooms."
"Kurt, are you okay?"
Kurt waited a moment to make sure the rest of his stomach acid wasn't coming back up, then said, "Yeah dad. I just had a bad breakfast burrito."
"Hmm."
Kurt flushed the toilet before making his way back into the room. His father had an apprehensive look on his face, which worried Kurt.
"What?" Kurt asked as he sat beside him again.
"Blaine told me he woke up to you puking yesterday." Darn it, Kurt thought, I thought I'd gotten away with that.
"Okay, I admit it. I think I have the stomach flu. I know it's stupid to come into a hospital with the flu, but I couldn't just not visit you guys," Kurt lied.
Burt narrowed his brow. "You're right. It is stupid. Which is why I know you would never do something like that. Now, why don't you tell me the real reason you aren't feeling well, or I'll make a nurse come in here and give you every test imaginable," he said as he lifted his nurse call button.
Kurt waved for him to stop. "Fine, fine." He took a deep breath. "I'm not sick."
Burt held up the button again. "Kurt stop lying, I will press the butto-"
"No, no, no. I'm not sick, but I am pregnant."
Burt froze. "What?"
Kurt took the opportunity to take the call button out of his father's hand. "I slept with a guy. It only happened a couple of times and I got pregnant. Everyone told me I needed to loosen up a little. They said I was too uptight because of Devon," he said with a roll of the eyes. "I ended up with another baby and the guy doesn't even want to be involved. That's it so far."
"Kurt-"
"-I know. I'm a completely irresponsible person who should've learned their lesson the first time. I'm a screw-up and I'm stupid and-"
"HEY," Burt said forcefully, "Don't you say those things about my son. My kid is an intelligent, creative, kind person who doesn't deserve to get talked about like that. Yeah, you made a couple of mistakes, but you are manning up to them. You take them head-on and I've seen Devon. I've seen how you took an accident and made it into something incredible.
I saw you in high school get beat down by almost everyone and you persevered like a champ because you're a Hummel. Now you got me to help you. I'll be there every day you need me and many, many more, okay."
Kurt leaned over and rested his chest on his dad's. "I love you so much."
Burt patted his back. "Not as much as I love you."
They stayed there for a while until Kurt pulled back with red puffy eyes. "I need to tell you one more thing."
"What," Burt said with a laugh, "You got another kid you forgot about?"
Kurt shook his head. "I sold the house. I didn't have any money to pay for an apartment and it felt so strange without you there."
"Kurt, that's fine. I understand completely."
"But, but what about mom? All the memories with mom? It was the house you bought together after you got married. You brought me home from the hospital and she sang me to sleep in the living room."
Burt nodded. "And she died. She's never going to step foot in that house again, but she will always be with us. Wherever we go. Her memories are right here," he said as he pointed to Kurt's head, "And her love is right here," he said as he pointed to his heart.
Man, he really missed his dad.
Hey guys, I hope you enjoyed the chap. It was a little shorter, but the next will be longer. A little time jump will happen, and they are going to take a long trip to New York. Hope y'all have a great week and review if you'd like. – ScruffyPalace
