A Raven's Guide to Seducing a Blonde

Chapter 21: Is This How You Felt, Brother?

Naruto sat at the kitchen table blanking out the always chaotic start to the day. His younger siblings were in high energy but Naruto wasn't in the mood to participate. He sat there in silence poking at the egg on his breakfast with his fork, lost in his thoughts.

"Aren't you hungry, Naruto?" Minato asked carefully as he watched the young blonde move his food around his plate. "If you want I can make you something else?"

"Hmm?" Naruto responded, "Oh, I'm fine"

The older man sat down in the chair beside him multitasking with the rest of the children around him. "Is it Sasuke?"

"Is what Sasuke?"

"The reason why you look so troubled?"

Naruto looked back down at his eggs prodding them harder enough to scrape the bottom of the plate.

"Are you still upset about him leaving?"

"Something like that"

"Hey, I have something that might cheer you up!" Minato explained cheerfully as he rustled in the kitchen draw. Naruto turned to watch him curiously as he pulled out an envelope and handed it to him.

"What is this?" Naruto asked suspiciously.

"Well open it and find out!"

Naruto opened the envelope carefully and pulled out what looked like a credit card. The blonde looked at Minato in confusion. "You do know I'm terrible at managing finances, why are you giving me… uh… what exactly is it?"

The older man laughed at his confusion and ruffled Naruto's hair. "It's a savings account"

"Savings? Since when did anyone around here have any savings?" Naruto teased.

"Your mother has been saving for a very long time actually"

"Wait… what?"

He sat back down next to him now taking a more serious tone. "She has savings accounts for all of her children. But mostly she put a good chunk of her money aside for the little ones but your older brother Nagato gave his back when he moved out"

"Why did he do that?"

"He thought you needed it the most"

Naruto smiled at the gesture. Nagato was the most sensible of his siblings and even though they argued like crazy he was always the one who looked out for him. Nagato was the only one with a different father who he saw regularly. Growing up Naruto always felt quite jealous because of the relationship they had compared to the one he had with his father. But despite this, Nagato always looked out for the blonde and knew him better than anyone else in his family. He was the only one who was able to bring him out of aggressive episodes before Sasuke came onto the scene. He cherished and relied on their brotherly bond perhaps a little too much, so when he went back to prison he felt that he had let him down the most.

"Why are you giving me this now?"

"Your mother and I were going to talk to you about it tonight but I'm sure she wouldn't mind if I mentioned it now. We were thinking you could rent a place near Sasuke so you don't have to break up or anything like that"

"How did you know about that?"

"I kind of overheard you talking to yourself…"

"Oh… I need to stop doing that" Naruto laughed in embarrassment. "It's a nice gesture and all but I don't think we are going to be together anymore"

"Did something happen?"

"I think he might have had a… um… a fling with Shikamaru"

Minato gasped unexpectedly. "Wait, what? Are you sure?"

"Well, they haven't exactly told me that per-say but… Shikamaru was pretty close to admitting something and told me it would be better coming from Sasuke"

"When was this supposed to have happened?"

"He said it happened when I was in prison"

"Have you talked to Sasuke about this?"

"I've been avoiding him. I can't… if my boyfriend and best friend have… I mean, I know I ended it before I went to prison but that's still not a good thing to do, right?"

"No, you're totally right!" Minato reassured him, "Nothing of the sort should've happened it's just not what friends do to you"

Naruto felt weak and betrayed and couldn't stop the wave of tears that flooded in. He felt angry and worthless. He could understand if Sasuke had slept or dated anyone else in the time he was away but to do it with his best friend? Naruto couldn't see past that and a familiar flare in his brain begun to ignite and his breathing got a lot faster.

"Naruto… it's alright okay? Please breathe slower" Minato tried to calm him but he was just getting angrier the more he thought about it. His younger siblings had stopped to witness the chaos which was now radiating from their older brother and the room went quiet. Minato felt panicked as he hadn't witnessed an episode before and he wasn't sure how to handle things. He knew there were limited people who could control that but he thought his new medication stopped the episodes.

"Are you having a panic attack? Do you want me to get someone?"

"Why…" Naruto panted hitting his fists on the table. "Is this the karma I deserve?" he continued through weeps. Naruto had started to shout erratically and Minato quickly gathered the younger children into the hallway.

"Okay I need you all to put on your shoes and your coat and we are going to pop next door okay?" he explained as he helped three-year-old Jessie into her shoes.

"Misa could you help Kairi please?" she nodded as she helped her five-year-old sister into her outerwear.

"Minato… what's wrong with Naruto?" Misa asked worryingly. "Is he going to get sent away again?" she continued in a more saddened tone.

"No sweety he's just having a hard time at the moment and needs a bit of peace and quiet for a while" he reassured her.

Minato knocked on their next-door neighbour to ask for a favour to take care of the kids while he dealt with an emergency. She was an old friend of Kushina's and would often babysit for her when they were all growing up, so it was pretty handy to have her next door. As he closed the front door behind him Naruto hadn't moved from his seat but had his head on the table, still hysterically crying with the occasional hit with the side of his fist. Minato was about to call Naruto's mother when someone came through the door unexpectedly.

"Hello?" an unfamiliar voice shouted through the living room. "Anyone home?"

"Oh… Nagato?" Minato recognised him from the photographs.

"H-hi… what's going on-" before he could finish he noticed Naruto through the archway to the kitchen, hysterical. He rushed over to his brother and tried to get him to calm.

"Minato is it?"

"Yes…"

"What happened?"

"He was upset about some recent events. We were just casually talking about what was bothering him and this just… happened"

"Don't worry, it's not unusual. But since he's on medication it must be something that's quite distressing to him"

Nagato spent the next half hour holding and comforting Naruto. The blonde hadn't had as little as a panic attack since he started his medication in prison. He had passed out from exhaustion and Nagato laid the blonde on the sofa hoping he would feel better when he woke up.

"Well, that wasn't what I was expecting" the older brother teased.

"I'm so sorry… what must you think of me…" Minato sadly expressed as he sat himself down on the living room chair with his head bowed over. "I didn't mean to distress him; I was only trying to help"

Nagato went over to Minato to comfort him too. "Hey listen, it's not your fault it's just the way his brain is wired. Medication can only do so much. There are only two people who can really bring him out of that state so don't beat yourself up over it"

"Yeah, I guess you're right"

"So you're Minato. It's nice to finally meet you face to face" he said smiling. Nagato was happy that his mother got rid of his sibling's father and met someone who was actually kind and looked after his family. For a while, he felt rather guilty for leaving so suddenly especially not being able to come back when Naruto got sent down.

"How is the academy going? I heard you're doing really well in your police training"

"It's going alright. My girlfriend talked me into it since she's in the force and I honestly thought I would hate it but I'm actually getting a lot out of it. Although Naruto doesn't know about it"

"Oh, you didn't actually tell me why you're visiting. Not that you need a reason!" he smiled.

"I actually have some news; about me and my girlfriend… we are having a baby"

"Wow, that's incredible. Congratulations Nagato. You'll have to bring her by when you have the time because I'm dying to meet her"

"Of course! But before that, could you tell me exactly what Naruto was distressed about?"

Sasuke didn't eat much of his breakfast as he was feeling highly anxious from the lack of response from his boyfriend. He needed to explain exactly what Shikamaru was talking about before his mind came up with all sorts of theories. The way Shika had come out with it had sounded like they both got up to something shady whilst he was away and that's the last thing he wanted Naruto to speculate. He knew the blonde was due at work this morning so he figured it might be a good idea to visit him at the diner. At least there he couldn't shut him out.

"Sasuke." His father prompted his attention. "Have you packed for Brown yet?"

"I don't go for another month, why do I need to pack now"

"Actually you're going a lot earlier than that. I have set up an internship for you whilst you study and you need to be there for your induction"

"Wait… what internship?" Sasuke snapped.

His father stayed silent, not taking his eyes off his newspaper.

"It better not be what I think it is"

"Sasuke…" his mother contributed softly. "Please don't speak to your father in that tone"

"I knew there was going to be a fucking catch to this! You were way too flexible by letting me choose my University! I don't need an internship I'm taking the maximum credits! When will I even have the time?"

"It's only on the weekend Sasuke" his father responded calmly.

"Oh! Well that's alright then, isn't it? I'll just not have a social life, shall I?"

Sasuke's father slammed down his newspaper startling both Sasuke and his mother. He stood up firmly and stood behind Sasuke who didn't take his eyes off the newspaper on the table. Fugaku leaned down and rested his head above the raven's shoulder with his lips next to his ear.

"Now you listen to me you inconsiderate brat" he whispered harshly, "This attitude you have will end here and now. I've been very patient with you Sasuke and have let you get away with talking to me like this but you're no longer in high school so I will treat you like an adult. Defy me again, and you'll find out exactly how lucky you are to be in this position", he finished as he left promptly out of the room. Sasuke had frozen in his seat. Is this… how you felt brother… how you felt?

Kushina was rushed off her feet. The breakfast rush was busier than usual with the schools on holiday. She wondered if it would be wise to hire some extra staff. A couple of her waitresses' contracts were ending soon as they were heading off to college in the fall. So much was happening so quickly she completely forgot to get on top of things. Minato had promoted her to assistant manager and looked after the diner whenever he wasn't there. It was a blessing to have him take care of her children whilst she works, especially having two wages coming into the home. She was more financially stable now and was happy she was able to provide better for her family. Just as she was about to take a break, a familiar and friendly face walked through the doors of the diner.

"Nagato!" she screamed excitedly, feeling embarrassed by the public outburst, Kushina cleared her throat and composed herself. "My son, how are you?!" she continued calmly, giving her oldest a long hug.

"I'm good mom" he chuckled. "I wasn't expecting such a dramatic welcome".

"Are you hungry? Let me get you something!"

"No, no mom that's alright. Coffee would be good though" he said as he sat down on the stool near the counter.

"How are things?" she asked whilst pouring the hot coffee.

"They're good thank you, mom. The academy is going really well so I thought now would be a good time to see Naruto and everyone for a catch up"

"Speaking of your brother…" she said as she looked at her watch, "He's late"

"Oh?"

"Yeah, he was due on shift a half-hour ago. We've been so busy this morning I didn't realise the time"

"Actually mom, I've already seen Naruto this morning," he said carefully.

"You went home first?" she asked smiling. " That means you met Minato? How do you like him? He's great, isn't he? I hope you two will be great friends-"

"Mom!" he interrupted, chuckling some more.

"Sorry… sorry… I'm babbling aren't I" she blushed.

"No, it's nice to see you so happy. It's just… about Naruto"

"What about him?" she asked worryingly, "he hasn't got into trouble has he?"

"Nothing like that don't worry, I walked into him having an episode. Minato tried to calm him but he had no idea what he was doing but don't worry, my timing was great as I managed to calm him down"

"Oh my god, I need to go…" she said quickly untying her apron.

"Mom wait, it is okay he's fine"

"But it's been ages since he had an episode. What triggered it?"

Before Nagato could respond he noticed a familiar face enter the diner. He pointed towards the man. "That".

To be continued.
