Chapter Eleven.
Jacob's POV:
Falling for Jessica was as easy as breathing. Before I even knew what I was doing, I was in love. It sounded stupid, even to myself. I mean, I had hated her when I first met her. She acted like a spoiled brat and I assumed that was what she was.
But along the way, things changed.
So, here I sit debating with myself. Do I tell her and risk being rejected, or worse, breaking her heart when I imprint? Or should I take the plunge and try to be happy?
Hell, I wasn't even sure I would imprint. It was supposed to be rare and only three wolves had imprinted at all. If anything, I shouldn't hold my breath.
"Fuck, what do I do… what do I do…"
A knock at the door. "Are you done in there yet? I've had to pee for like twenty minutes," Jessica states and I physically facepalm. "If you're having trouble pooping I can start adding more fiber to your diet-"
"No! No, I'm fine. I was just organizing the shampoos…"
"Oh… Okay then. Well, let me know when you're done with that." Once the sound of her footsteps disappeared, I let out a sigh of relief.
Okay, Jake. You need to go out there and tell her how you feel. It's been long enough. Bella is gone. Bella is with Edward and probably a bloodsucking vampire and Jessica is here, and she obviously likes you too. So, go out there and get your girl-
Another knock. "Hey, Jake. There's a phone call for you! Sounds urgent."
Ugh, great. Just great. "Okay, I'm coming out now."
"Without washing your hands?" When I don't answer, hand frozen on the doorknob, Jessica tsks. "Wash your hands, you heathen. No one needs pink-eye because of your laziness."
With a groan, I listen dutifully and wash my hands. I exit the room with a pensive look, that Jessica just takes as consolation.
Cooing empathetically, I hear her mutter, "What's good in fiber? I should ask Billy…" before handing the phone off. She walks away without a second glance, her hips swishing as she walks. Of course, my eyes linger until she leaves the room.
"Hello?" I ask, putting the phone to my ear. Someone sobs from the other end, akin to tinkling bells and wind chimes. "Who is this?"
"Jake," they cry, and it sounds so familiar. "Jake, I need your help. I'm in danger."
"I want to help, but I don't know who this is. Can you give me a name?"
"Jake! Listen to me, I need help!" When I don't answer, the unknown person asks fitfully, "Don't you recognize your best friend?"
Best friend? No, it can't be. This isn't-
"Bella?"
"Yes! It's Bella," my breath wooshes out of my lungs and I lean against the wall next to the bathroom, heart racing. "My daughter is in danger, the Volturi are going to slaughter us because they think she's an immortal child!"
"D-Daughter? What?" The room felt like it was spinning. "You haven't even been gone that long… how do you have a kid?"
An aggravated sigh. "Jake, focus! I need your help to protect her. My family is on our way to the reservation. We beg for sanctuary."
Bella and her kid were coming here, to the reservation… because evil vampires were going to kill them. Yeah, okay. I can deal with this.
"You need to call Sam. Here's his number."
The rest of the conversation was a blur, me reciting the number and her goodbye with a reply of, I love you, Jake. As the phone call ended, I slid to my butt on the floor and lay my head on my knees, trying to catch my breath.
Bella's here. Bella and her daughter and her husband are here. Bella's a vampire.
Fuck, this was so messed up. Bella's gone. I failed.
"Jake, are you hungry? I made-" Jessica stops, rushing over to kneel in front of me. "Honey, what's wrong? What's going on?"
"I failed my best friend. She's gone," my voice cracks and tears rush down my face.
"What do you mean, honey? Who was on the phone?"
"B-Bella."
Hands cup my face and pull my head up. Even through my tears, I can see the worry in Jessica's eyes.
"Bella called?"
"Yes, she's coming," I sniffle and try to stop crying. I was ruining everything. "She says her daughter is in danger and they all need s-sanctuary."
"I knew she was pregnant at the wedding!" Her words make me cry harder, chest feeling like it's caving in. "Okay, this isn't the time. I'm sorry."
"She-she wasn't pregnant. I don't know how she was. She's a fucking vampire now. She's dead."
The room felt like it was spinning and the only thing I could do was ride the waves as Jessica pulls me into her arms, crushing me tightly against her. I breathed in her smell, sweet and mingled with my own.
How the fuck was I going to see her again? And when she's a vampire?
"It's okay, baby. I've got you. You're safe with me."
I let her comfort me as I calmed down, glad to be with her and surrounded by her love. She pressed a kiss to my temple and I was warmed from the outside in. How great to be cared for by her, how great to feel her love. If only for a little while longer.
After finally getting my wits, I get a call from Sam concerning the call from Bella. We argue back and forth for a while but ultimately come to a decision of meeting them at the treaty line. While I made plans for Sue to take care of dad while Jessica and I are gone, Sam called the pack to his home and filled them in on what was going on, but most were annoyed at the turn of events. No one was a fan of Bella anymore, besides Seth.
We make it to the treaty line a little before sundown. Jessica stands next to me, ignoring the glares the others are giving her. Emily and the others had stayed back at the house as ordered, but not Jessica. No, she stood with her arms folded over chest similar to when she yells at me for eating the rest of her food when she's not looking.
She looks so pretty when she's angry.
"Jacob, focus!" Paul whispers in annoyance. "They're coming."
Come on, Jake, I think to myself as I square my shoulders and brace for what's coming. Get your head in the game.
A few seconds later, the group of nine appear from the trees. They all wear comfortable clothing, unlike their usual fancy clothing. Bella catches my eye almost instantly, but I look away quickly from anxiousness. In Edward Cullen's arms, sits a babbling toddler with short brown hair and rosy cheeks.
"Why have you come here?" Sam asks lowly, eyes hard as he stares at the creatures that stole his future from him. Carlisle and his wife step forward, in front of the others but not past the line. He looks older, and I can almost imagine wrinkles covering his face.
"We come in peace," Carlisle says gravely. "We had no other options."
"You could have died," Paul exclaims and Sam growls at him in a warning.
With a sigh, Sam says, "You said there is a child in danger?" Carlisle nods and motions for his son to come forward. The toddler reaches up to tug at his hoodie string before shoving it into her mouth. I fight back a giggle. She's so cute.
"Yes, her name is Renesmee. During their honeymoon, Edward and Bella consummated their marriage and a surprising revelation was made when Bella fell pregnant."
"This is impossible. How? You're dead." Quil speaks his thoughts, earning another growl for speaking out of turn.
"Bella's pregnancy progressed at an impossible rate. Renesmee was born in September and Bella changed the same day. She would have stayed human for a few more years to finish college, but there were complications," Edward said with a grimace.
"I see," Sam says, poker face on. "And how is her life threatened?"
"A guard member, Jane, came to check up on Bella's mortality. And she saw Renesmee in Bella's arms during a hunt feeding from a dormouse. She assumed the worst and left."
Bella rushes forward, trying to get past the treaty line but is yanked back by the blonde. She clasps her hands together and pleads, "Please, the Volturi have already sent out memos to other covens telling them of our treason and only a few will come forward as a witness to our miracle," Bella breaks in, shaking like a leaf. I have an urge to comfort her but I hold it in as I share a look with Jessica and gain my strength of will back. "I can't lose my daughter or my family. We have no other options."
"Why should we help you and endanger ourselves and our families? I have three little sisters at home and my mom and dad and my imprint, and you want me to give up everything because you're in danger? You endanger others with your very existence," Jared says, clenching his teeth. "I'm seventeen years old and I hate that I have to risk my life for people because of you. What makes you think I want to save you now?"
"And how do we even know the baby is safe? She's literally a vampire baby. You said she drank blood and she looks like a toddler but she's only a few months old," Embry adds, not as hostile and Jared but the furrow in his brow told me he was annoyed.
"She's a baby. A little innocent child who needs help! And she's half-human, so it's your duty to protect at least half of her!" The blonde snaps, free hand clenched into a fist.
Paul laughs emotionlessly. "Which half?"
"You son of a bitch!" She screeches before jumping over the treaty line and attempting to tackle Paul. Paul growls and phases, running towards her. Jared quickly phases and tackles him, trying to pull him back but failing miserably. The big muscled man holds back the blonde, whispering in her ear quietly. I clasp my hand with Jessica's, rubbing the back to calm her.
"Hey! All of you, stop this!" Sam screeches, and everyone goes quiet. Paul snarls and bites Jared's shoulder, who whimpers loudly from the pain. You could almost see the veins pop out of Sam's forehead. "Paul, I said STOP!" Paul drops to the ground, howling pitifully while Jared sighs and lays down next to him, unable to phase back because of his nudity.
As the meeting moves on around us, Jessica squeezes my hand tightly, and I feel warm just from her touch.
Sam, now done dealing with his childish pack members, asks plainly, "May I hold the child?"
"Uh, I don't know-" Bella starts with wide, unsure eyes, but before she can finish, Edward's plopping the baby into Sam's arms. Now on our side of the treaty line, we can see her clearly. Her little heartbeat thumps away in her chest and she slobbers all over her fists, wide eyes staring up at us. One green, the other brown like Bella's.
"Why are her eyes different colors?" Embry asks, cocking his head to the side.
Edward says, "She has a condition called central heterochromia." He smiles down at her, and I can't blame him. She's a cute kid.
"Where'd she get the green eye from?" I asked, marveling at how much she looks like her parents.
"I had green eyes when I was human."
The baby raises a slobber covered hand and smears it across Sam's cheek, babbling to herself as she does so. Seth bursts into laughter at the sight before asking breathlessly, "What's her name?"
"Renesmee Carlie Cullen. Renesmee after my mom Renee and Edward's mom Esme, and Carlie is a mix of Charlie and Carlisle."
Leah snorts, "Damn, and I thought Albus Severus was a mouthful."
Sam cooed down at Renesmee, tickling her sides and earning cute giggles in response.
"I have so many questions about this."
"We can answer them. We can answer anything you ask," Carlisle says and Sam nods, contemplating to himself.
The pixie pops up from the back of the group, asking, "Is that a yes, then? Will you protect us?" It's quiet as he makes his decision, but we all know what it will be.
"Yes," Sam decides with finality before handing the child back to her father. "Renesmee is a harmless baby who needs protecting, so we will."
The rest of the conversation dwindles as Sam allows the Cullen's to cross the treaty line and into the reservation. It felt wrong as they crossed over into our sacred land, into our home. But I didn't have time to think as someone slammed into me.
Bella felt like a stone in my arms and smelt like bleach, but she was still the same girl I had grown up with. Besides the high heels and makeup and shiny hair and golden eyes. When she glanced up at me like she always had, I couldn't help but melt. A stupid part of me still yearned for her, however faintly. I wished it would shut the fuck up and leave me in peace.
"Jake," she sobbed, voice strange and different. "What are we going to do? Renesmee's in danger." Jessica glanced at me over Bella's shoulders, looking a bit annoyed. I couldn't really blame her. Pulling her head away from my shoulder, Bella looked up at me as if I rose the sun. "You'll help us, right? You'll save us?"
It wasn't even a question. "Of course, I will. Even if it kills me."
Jessica tsked. "It better not kill you."
At the sound of her voice, Bella pulled away and turned toward the source. A sour look graced her unnaturally perfect features.
"Why are you here? Shouldn't you be at your own house in Forks?"
Jessica pursed her lips before replying, "Didn't you get the message? I live here. This is my home too."
"Oh, wow," An unreadable expression covered Bella's face. "How did this all start?"
"Well, when you abandoned your best friend I helped pick up the pieces. No need to thank me."
Bella opened her mouth to retort but Edward laid a hand on her shoulder to calm her. "Love, we have other things we should be attending to. Such as the safety of our daughter."
Little Renesmee coos in her father's arms, slobbering on her fists as she nibbled on them.
"Oh, yes," Bella states, brushing down the skirt of her dress and backing away from me as if she realized her mistake. "Renesmee is our priority."
"She's a cute kid," I comment and stretch my hands out to hold her. Edward must deem it acceptable because he gratefully hands her over. She sighs at the warmth of my skin and pulls her hand from her mouth to yank at my hair. "Ouch! Hey, no pulling. That's not nice."
She giggled in response and did it again, and I can't help the grin that covers my face. I had a soft spot for kids, even weird vampire toddlers that sucked mice dry.
Turning towards Jessica, I showed her the child in my arms.
"Look at her! She's so cute with her two different eyes." Jessica grins and tickles Renesmee under her chin, who bursts into a fit of laughter.
"She's absolutely precious. But shouldn't she have a pacifier?"
Edward hums, "Bella forgot it at the house in Alaska."
"But you're a vampire, how did you forget something like this?" I asked teasingly, raising an eyebrow at her. At my words, Bella stiffens. Without a word she takes the baby from my arms and turns away from me.
"I'm heading to your house now. When you're done putting me down, I'll see you at home." She disappears as she runs towards home, leaving the three of us in the dust.
Jessica snorts, rolling her eyes. "What's wrong with her? Can't take a joke?" Edward rubs the back of his neck sheepishly and shrugs.
"She's having a hard time adjusting to her change. Unlike the rest of us, she still forgets things and she's not as graceful either."
"Is she sick or something?"
He shrugs again, "I don't think vampires can get sick."
Without much else to say, we head back to the house. Edward walks in front of us while Jessica and I hold hands and swing our arms back and forth. We decide to walk slowly, intent on getting a small amount of time to ourselves before the vampires ruined it.
Gazing down at her, my heart pounds. "Thank you for being there."
"I wouldn't have made you go by yourself."
"But I still appreciate it. It was a lot," I say and she nods, gazing up at me.
"Things will be okay. You're going to kick those vampire warlords ass and then Bella is going to leave and things are going to be peachy keen," She exclaims, cupping my cheek and smiling. I hold her hand to my face as I hold the other tightly in my hand. It wouldn't be how it was before, of course not with a family of vampires and a baby, but with Jessica, by my side, I knew I could make it through. Or at least, I hoped.
Jessica's POV:
I had woken up to the sound of a crying toddler. It wouldn't have been that bad, I had babysat before and was fine with children and all of the things that came with them. But then fucking Bella Cullen decided to blast music to soothe her. And it wasn't even a lullaby, it was fucking Korean pop!
With a groan, I had wiped the sleep from my eyes and got out of bed to start my day.
Bella was bouncing with Renesmee in the living room, dancing with her on her hip. She waved to me, a small smirk on her lip, and I fought the urge to flip her the bird and did the typical white smile back before heading to shower.
Thankfully, I felt better after a shower and quickly got to work making breakfast; eggs, toast, and turkey bacon. The smell quickly woke up Jacob and Billy, who somehow had slept through the music. Jacob helped Billy with his morning routine before rolling him to the table. Bella excused herself and went to shower herself, while Edward settled with Renesmee next to Jacob.
"It's so good, honey," Jacob exclaims, putting a hand on my thigh.
Edward nods, giving Renesmee tiny bites of the meal so she doesn't choke. "Renesmee hates bacon, I never thought to make her turkey bacon."
"It's a good substitute, especially health-wise. My mom used to make a lot of healthy foods because she's health-conscious, so I've whipped these guys into shape pretty well."
"Yeah, she stole all of our good stuff," Jacob pouts and I pinch his cheek teasingly. "I miss Doritos."
We finish the meal with light small talk and once Bella finishes in the bathroom, I finish getting ready so I can take Billy to his appointment. And that's how I found myself here, alone and contemplating why I'm not knocking the fuck out of Bella Cullen.
She had been around for a few days, doing small things to irritate me because, for some odd reason, she's upset that I'm living with Jacob. Jacob says that she probably doesn't mean it, that she's just settling in, but I know better. Unlike him, I don't have rose-tinted glasses on. I know she's trying to be a bitch, upset me enough that I leave, but of course, that won't help so easily.
"You know, Jessica," Bella had said while feeding Renesmee applesauce and cheese crackers. "Jacob wants a big family."
"Oh, I know. Two daughters, two sons. Possibly another if there's enough money."
She raises her eyebrow. "You've talked about this?"
"Oh yeah, we talk about everything," I say wistfully, more for her benefit than my own. Flipping my hair over my shoulder I say with a grin, "We're best friends, didn't you know that?"
That hadn't been the first time she had said something underhanded, and it wouldn't be the last, I knew. But that wasn't even the worst of it if you can believe that!
Bella had taken to cooking for Jacob. And it wouldn't be that big of a deal if Jacob wasn't in love with it. Even as a vampire, she was very talented and could easily cook huge portions for the rest of the pack.
She could make the perfect partner for Jacob, a voice taunts as I answer the information on Billy's clipboard. But I quickly shook the thoughts away, because Bella was a vampire and there was no way Jacob could be with her now. Pushing the thoughts from my head, I finished filling out the forms, I turned them in and went back to my seat and waited until Billy was finished.
Twenty minutes later and a thorough briefing of Billy's health from his doctor, we head for some Christmas shopping at Target and lunch at Subway. With my shopping list in hand, Billy and I are partners in crime as we spend half of my hefty paycheck and some of his disability check on presents for our family.
As we settle down with our food at a side table, Bella comes up in the conversation again.
"I don't like her here," Billy exclaims after wiping his mouth with a napkin. I chew and listen eagerly, glad to have someone on my side at least. "Don't get me wrong, she is and always will be like a daughter to me, but she's hurt Jake too much and I can't forgive her for that."
Swallowing, I say, "That's understandable."
"I can't throw them out, though. Renesmee is my best friend's granddaughter and she's just a child. Yesterday she tried to swallow a straw," As my eyes widened, he gave a hearty laugh. "Bella pulled it out and she was fine but I highly doubt a toddler that tries to swallow a straw would be a threat to anyone."
"I can't believe Bella's a mom, she never seemed the motherly type."
"To be honest, she still doesn't."
And he was right, sadly. Aside from Bella's morning dancing with Renesmee and her playing with her, Edward has taken the brunt of actually raising their daughter. He feeds her meals and changes her diapers while Bella fiddles on her phone or is out visiting the rest of her family.
One surprising person I hadn't expected to see was Rosalie, who had also become a permanent fixture in our household. When Edward was doing his fatherly duties, Rosalie was picking up the slack. It was as if she was born to be a mother.
Billy and I finish the rest of our food while we make light conversation, and then we're headed on the long way home.
When we return to La Push, Billy asks to be dropped off at Sue's. I make my way home alone, heading inside with the intent of getting some much needed Jacob and Jessica time. I leave the Christmas shopping in the car, with the idea that I'll wrap it once Jacob is out patrolling.
Inside, I find him settled on the couch watching Renesmee playing with a 'Tickle-Me Elmo', face pulled into a wide grin. Bella is nowhere to be seen, for which I am grateful. Gingerly, I sit on the couch and cuddle up next to him. When his arms wrap tightly around me, I sigh in content.
"How was dad's appointment?"
"Good, he's healthy as a horse. They lessened his insulin," Jacob hums in appreciation, kissing my forehead. "I dropped him off at Sue's so he could watch the game with her and Charlie." Renesmee raises the Elmo up so I can see it, babbling words that don't make sense.
As I start to play with her, Jacob settles next to me and says, "If it wasn't for you, my dad wouldn't be in such a good place. I'm so grateful for you, honey."
Jacob was shocked when he found out about Billy's drastic health changes, to say the least. It had only been a few months, but with the healthy meals and snack alternatives, along with his sobriety, Billy has flourished. He may never walk again, but he has an easier time getting around on his own.
When we had told him, he had been all smiles, but broke down and cried in my arms when the two of us were alone.
"Y-you didn't have to do that," He had said through tears, but all I did was hold his face in my hands and kiss him silly.
"I want you and Billy to be healthy, silly. It was no trouble."
This time, I just kiss his nose before reaching down and tickling Renesmee's tummy. Her giggles are like music to my ears, and for a second I have the weird urge to have my own little one with Jacob.
But that would be completely crazy, especially with everything that was going on!
When Bella returns, Renesmee is taking her nap and Jacob and I are cuddled close on the couch watching a movie. It had been put on for Renesmee, but it was one of my childhood favorites and I couldn't help but become invested.
Her facial expression drops when she takes us in, but she quickly masks it as she settles into the living room chair and scrolls on her phone. Rolling my eyes, I settle closer to Jacob. But he's pulling away, settling himself farther on the couch.
I stare at him for a few seconds, trying to get him to look at me, but he refuses to look and I decide not to dwell on it. We finish the rest of the movie and put on another, this time a teen drama.
Jacob and I don't make contact until a few hours later when our hands brush and he jumps. Growing upset, I decided that enough is enough. Just because Bella is here doesn't mean what we have is going to be hidden behind closed doors. This is our house. We will not be stifled!
Pointing to the bedroom door, I give Jacob a stern look before saying, "We need to talk."
"What about-"
"Now."
With his head low, he heads for the bedroom with me following quickly behind him.
Jacob's POV:
"Why are you acting like this all of a sudden?"
"Like what?"
I'm playing dumb, is what I'm doing. Jessica breathes heavily through her nose and lays back in bed. I know she's annoyed with me but I can't help it. Everything in my life has been a massive rollercoaster since she got back.
I was supposed to confess, not move ten paces backward. Hell, I half-expected to hate fuck her again like I did in the beginning.
"You know what. Now, stop being stupid and talk to me, will you?"
"It's nothing, Jessie."
"If it's nothing then you won't mind fucking me then, right?"
"Jessica…"
"You said it's nothing, so I assume you have no problem continuing your normal life as if nothing has changed."
Sweat beads peppered my brow. "What about the baby?"
"I can be quiet if you can, partner."
"Partner?" I snort, a small smile growing on my face. "You're such a dork."
"But I'm your dork," She presses a kiss to my lips and I lose all fight, and could you blame me? She was perfect.
When I finally pushed inside of her, her mouth parted with a low moan. She covered her mouth with her hand, intent on keeping her promise of staying quiet, and I muffle a groan in her neck. I set a steady pace, relishing in the feel of her warm, wet wall surrounding me. Just like the first time, and every time since it's almost an otherworldly experience to sleep with Jessica.
This was our love language if we ever had one. I couldn't get enough of her, even after morning breath and stupid arguments. She gazes up at me as I slowly slide in and out of her, wrapping one of her arms tightly around me. Pulling her hand away, I kiss her as I speed up.
It doesn't take her long to come. It's been so long since we've been connected like this, that it only takes a few skilled brushes on her clit to have her coming around me. I follow quickly behind her, filling her to the brim.
I take my time cleaning her up, using the baby wipes to wipe the sweat and juices that's covered her body. Leaning down, I lick the mess I made inside of her clean, making her come again before wiping her clean with another wipe. When we've fully dressed again, we settle under the covers to cuddle.
"I miss you," She exclaims, staring at me with warm eyes. They're ocean pools that I want to swim in forever. Jessica caresses my cheek, pressing a kiss to my nose. "I miss you so much."
Holding her hand to my face, I say back, "I miss you too. You're the most important person to me."
"You have no idea how much I want to-", She breaks off, wrapping her legs around me and brushing our lips together. "You're all I want in life, do you get that?" The words settle into the air, deep into my heart and I have the crushing realization that she feels the same.
Her lips crushed against my hurriedly, and she quietly whined as I cupped her face. Pulling away, the breath knocked out of me. She was so beautiful.
"Jess…" our foreheads leaned against each other, and I caressed her cheek tenderly. This girl, this rambling, empathetic, kind girl. This girl who I love. I have to tell her.
We kiss again, slow and sweet, when she pulls away, I start to speak and say the words I've been thinking for months, "Jessica, I lo-"
The door slams open, Bella standing there in the open doorway with teary eyes. Jessica and I break apart, but anyone would know what we were doing.
"Jake?" Bella asks, looking straight into my eyes. "Jake, please."
"Bella…"
"With her? Of all people…"
"With me of all people? What did you think it was supposed to be you?" Jessica snapped, pushing herself off the bed and walking over to Bella. "You're dead. You lost your fucking chance with him when you left him in that bed broken."
"You know nothing about what we share. You're just some high school has-been who can't even afford college," Bella bites out, eyes darkening with every word. Jessica doesn't even think before she reaches out and yanks Bella's hair. Not expecting it, Bella howls in surprise as her head is yanked to the side.
"Jessica, hey! You can't do that!" Before Bella can rip her arm out of its socket, I pull Jessica's hand away from Bella's hair and push her to sit on the bed. "She could have seriously hurt you! She's a newly changed vampire with enormous strength."
"You heard what she said to me. How she looked down on me."
"Who cares what she thinks! She's a vampire who is going to leave just as soon as we save her family from the bad guys and then we can get back to our lives."
"I do care! I know you don't, but I care what others think more than I'd like to! And you're in love with her and take her opinion into account over mine any day."
"That's not true. You have to know that's not true."
"Then why is she still here? Why does she get to ruin our relationship because she's jealous? Why don't you want to hurt her? She hurt you!"
"I can't. She's my best friend."
"Then what am I?" Dumbly, I keep my mouth shut. I can't confess yet, not like this. Not when we're angry. When I don't speak, her shoulders fall and a look of pain crosses her features. "Oh, I see. I really am just someone you fuck, huh? That's all this has been, right?"
"No! Never, you've never been like that to me," I yell and she glares at me. I've hurt her, I can't believe I've hurt her. Why do I keep messing things up?
"Don't fucking lie to me!"
Bella coughs and we both look at her. She starts to turn around and head out the door. "I'll just go check on Renesmee."
"We'll talk later, okay?" I call out, and she nods before disappearing.
When she leaves, Jessica looks tired. Without thinking, I try to pull her into my arms but she shoves me away. It burns deep, and I wondered again why I have to be such an idiot.
"You know what? Forget it. Forget everything. I'm done."
"What? Jessica- please, don't go." This can't be happening. Not when I'm so close to having you.
"I can't do this anymore," She sobs and stands up, grabbing her bag from the floor and starting to throw her things inside.
I try to grab for her hand, keep her by my side somehow but she pulls away. "Don't leave me. Please." I can't do this without you, I think as she throws more clothes into her bag. Please don't leave me alone.
With her things all packed, she gives me one more scathing look before snapping, "And don't worry, I won't tell anyone your stupid secret." She opens the door and walks out, leaving me just like I always feared. Just like my mother had, just like Bella had.
"Jessica…" I called to the empty room, trying to hold in my tears. But she was gone, out the front door and god knows where. I had lost her.
"Jake?" Bella calls from the other room.
This wasn't supposed to be this way, I knew. Bella and I were on different paths, making different choices and the love we had once shared was obsolete. Wiping my eyes roughly, swallowing my nerves before heading to the door. Maybe just once I can fix my fate. I can have the girl, I can be happy.
All it takes is just one small step, I think as I exit the room and seal my fate.
"So, why her?" Bella asks, spinning the spoon in her lukewarm coffee. She doesn't meet my eyes, glancing every now and then at Renesmee who snoozes in her playpen, suckling the pacifier I got her. In her arms in the giraffe plush that Jessica had given her, and the sight makes my heartache again. I was so stupid.
With a roll of my eyes, I ask, "What's your problem with her?"
"I just don't understand what you see in someone like her-" I cut her off with a snort and shake of my head.
"It's not for you to see."
"So, you're just going to waste your life like this? Jessica is the worst person you could have ended up with," As Bella continues to talk I feel myself getting angrier. "She's rude, disrespectful, loose-"
I rip the coffee cup out of her hands and break it in my fist. The glass embeds itself into my palm, and blood drips onto the table. Bella grabs for my hand, yelling out an alarmed Jake, but I pull away from her.
"You see how my hand looks right now?" I nod towards my hand, gritting my teeth in pain. "You did that to me. You broke me. You were my Edward." Quickly, my hand heals, the pieces of glass eject itself from my body and land on the table, covered in dry blood. Aside from the blood, my hand is as good as it once was. "This is how I am now, without you. With Jessica. Ever since I met her she has shown me support and love and I don't deserve it most of the time. We have sex, yeah, but it's not just sex anymore. It's love. I love her."
Bella sniffles, eyes pricking with tears that will never fall. "Jake."
I'm crying now too, fat tears dripping down my cheeks as it finally settles in, the finality of Jessica's words. "Fuck, I love her. You have no idea how much. You have no idea what she and I have been through together."
"W-what about what we've been through?" Bella lays a hand on my own and she's so cold, so inhuman. "You're my best friend. You're my Jake."
"How can you say we're best friends when you don't even know my favorite color?" I pull away from her again, placing my hands in my lap. "Don't fucking talk about her like that. Don't call her names, don't disrespect her. You used to let Edward do that shit to me all the time and I won't let you do the same to her."
Bella's silent for a moment, looking into space in a daze. When she finally speaks, her voice is so quiet I have to strain to hear it. "I'm sorry for everything I've put you through. I've been a selfish person and a horrible friend."
I don't answer, I can't. Nothing was the same anymore, we weren't the same.
She looked like my Bella, she acted like my Bella, but she wasn't my Bella anymore. She was a vampire who drank blood and didn't sleep and didn't breathe. And I was just Jacob, just like I always had been.
And Jessica was just Jessica and had become the center of my world without even meaning to.
"I love her," I said again, holding in tears that threatened to fall. I was so stupid, I should have told her before. "I can't believe I made her feel the way you made me feel."
As a last-ditch effort, Bella exclaims, "I love you, Jake." She sobs, but I don't comfort her. I can't anymore. "I love you."
"I know you do, but you chose your fate."
"And now you're choosing yours." There wasn't much left to say between the two of us, really.
With a deep breath, I say, "I'm sorry for manipulating you and hurting you. I shouldn't have kissed you without your consent. I'm sorry I wasn't a better friend to you."
"And I'm sorry I left you when you needed me most. I wasn't a friend to you at all, not in the way I should have been," Bella leans over and wraps her arms around me and for the last time I let her. I hold her back tightly against me, knowing that this is truly the end of us, the end of Bells and Jake. "I love you. I've always loved you."
"I love you too, Bells. But I love her more."
With nothing left to stay, she disappeared from my arms and grabbed Renesmee, kissing her forehead. Then she's out the door, leaving me truly and utterly alone. I stand to my feet, looking around and wondering how I got here.
Bella was gone, and now Jessica was too.
What was I going to do now?
