Intermission
"You hear about Fritz?"
"What about him?"
"Annie busted his leg. Won't be able to walk for months."
"Damn."
Ymir rolled the toothpick she was chewing on with her tongue. With him out of commission, Sasha was the only one she could use, and as the more days went by, the closer to graduation they came, it looked as though she was losing her too. The Potato Girl was growing more serious about her score, and had even ignored her when she'd tried to strong-arm her into gathering water early this morning. Ever since the day she'd been called out on her accent, Sasha had never refused, but now…
Was it because of Fritz's injury…? Well, the girl was bound to think for herself eventually, so it shouldn't have been a surprise.
"You think she's in love with him?" Achi said aloud.
"That, or without the free meals from him, she's aiming to get them another way, forever, by joining the Military Police."
Achi took a moment to adjust the rifle she was holding. "Wouldn't surprise me."
Ymir watched her push the rifle back against her shoulder, and looking down at hers held two-handed.
They were currently hiking with them on another rainy afternoon to later inspect, clean, and get them to fire under less than exceptional weather conditions. If you could get at least one shot off, you were clear. If not, you would have to spend the rest of the day with one of the instructors until you got it right.
She clicked her tongue. Honestly, she was more inclined drop hers, and looked around for that stupid girl. Ever since that day in the snowy mountains, the girl had somehow became more determined to get herself killed. Those menial tasks that only hopefuls volunteered for, Krista had taken it upon herself to do the dangerous ones—often tagging along with Connie, Reiner, Mina, Marco, and even Dazz of all people—or the ones that she had knowledge in, like first aid and messhall duties. As if putting herself at risk escorting carriages and wagons wasn't enough, the ones that shouldn't be taken to the extreme, were.
Like now, she was one of those charged with making sure nobody blew their fingers off trying to fire these all but defective rifles that the Military Police had so kindly thrown out in the trash for the trainees to use. Considering the last thing she was responsible for, acting as a squad leader in a mock breaching of Wall Rose, went horribly wrong because she intentionally put herself and those of her squad in harm's way, Ymir suspected the girl to jump at the chance of someone doing something stupid—of which she had no intention of preventing beforehand. Just like that time in the snowy mountains.
The girl hadn't actually listened to a damned word. Or she convinced herself that changing her fate meant to fully embrace her new life. Live it until she wasted way and dropped dead, regardless of whether she did it under her moniker or the true name she left behind.
If the moron did that, then the truth behind this woman in her memory might never be revealed. She couldn't allow that to happen.
"Hey. I need your help with something..."
