Chapter 21 - Job Opportunities

As soon as the school bell rang, Téa and Rebecca were out of there. Unbeknowst to the others, the two girls were on a mission. The aspiring ballet dancer had been working regulariy at one of Domino's burger joints. She hoped that onced she had earned enough she would be able to travel to New York and attend Juillard.

Earning some extra cash would get Rebecca a trip back to the United States. It had been months since she had seen her older sister and she was going crazy. Hearing about this, Téa really wanted to help. So that's what urged her to ask her boss if her friend could have a job too.

"You've got to promise me you won't tell the others." Téa said in a hushed tone, sitting down on the bus.

"Sure, I won't." Rebecca promising her friend, as she sat down next to her. "I just don't get why it's such a big deal. Why don't you want the others knowing?"

"Well for starters, we aren't exactly allowed to be doing this," Téa pointed out. "Having an part time job at our school is kind of illegal."

"Illegal?" Rebecca furrowed her brow, questioning her choice of words.

"Against school rules," Téa corrected herself.

"What happens if we are caught breaking these school rules ?" the American asked sounding slightly concerned.

"That won't happen Rebecca."

I'm serious Téa," Rebecca pushed, not sounding too convinced. "What happens if our school finds out?

"Promise me you won't freak out," Téa implored, before making her way off the bus.

Rebecca folded her arms across her chest anxiously waiting for an answer. "Well..."

"Explusion or suspension," Téa replied casually.

"Oh my god, Téa!"

"Like I said it's not going to happen." she emphasised a second time, before tugging her friend by the arm. "Come on, you can't be late on your first day!"

Rebecca's frown quickly turned into a smile, it was hard not to give in to Téa. They proceeded down a few different streets to finally reach the famous restaurant Burger World. Walking into the restaurant, the two girls were immediately greeted by the owner. He was a tall man with long red hair that was tied into a man bun. He seemed almost hyperactive, with the level of enthusiasm he had.

"Wow, Téa you weren't kidding me," he sighed in awe at the dark-haired girl. "A real American girl and she's an absolute hottie!"

"I knew you would like her. " Téa replied, smiling back sweetly. "This is my friend Rebecca. She's moved her recently from California."

"Well you know what they say about Californian girls," he said giving a suggestive wink.

"What?" Rebecca asked curiously.

He ignored her question with a laugh, as if the answer was implied. Téa laughed too, but something about the way she did seemed forced. It was almost as if she was trying to go along with everything he said. Rebecca didn't get it.

"You girls should hange into your uniforms." He said with a grin. "I can't wait to see yours Bec, I'm sure you'll turn heads!"

Rebecca took a page from Tea's book and firmly pressed her lips into a smile. She couldn't show him how uncomfortable he was making her feel. He then handed her a black t-shirt with the company logo before the girls went to the locker room.

"So what do you think?" Téa questioned, giving an enthusiastic nudge. "He's nice right?"

"A little creepy," Rebecca confessed, undoing the buttons on her school shirt. "What was doing back there?"

"So Jiro's a bit of a flirt," Téa said, brushing her friends comment off like it was nothing. "Why are you so suprised? Have you actually seen yourself? Not sure if you've noticed, but you're like super pretty. It explains why Joey and Duke flirt with you most of the time."

"Joey and Duke aren't thirty years old." Rebecca reminded with a small chuckle.

"Touché,"

In a matter of no-time, the two of them were ready. Walking to the closest mirror, Rebecca studied her appearance. The black t-shirt she was wearing was cropped, sitting a little higher than her belly-button. The denim shorts she wore finished quite high on her thighs and hardly seemed appropriate for work. Strangely enough, they still they seemed to fit the uniform guideline.

Rebecca trusted Téa more than anything, but something about this job didn't seem right...

Kaiba's inital reaction was to frown. Rebecca had promised to meet him in the school carpark, but was nowhere to be seen. Hearing the loud obnoxious voice of Joey Wheeler, he thought he had found her. He was wrong. Yugi, Tristan and Duke were with him, but not her and Téa. He found this slightly suspicious, but in the end he concluded he was overthinking things. Perhaps the girls were getting a pedicure and the male dweebs weren't invited.

Unlocking his car, he got inside before starting the engine. He had more important things to think about rather than her whereabouts. There were like board meetings and release dates and other things that took priority over some teenage girl.

Kaiba started driving down the streets of Domino. The traffic was absolutely horrendous reminding him why he had drivers in the first place. Still, he had to get back to Kaibacorp and focus on what was important. He couldn't afford to be pre-occupied with this childish highschool drama.

Suddenly strage noises started to come from his car engine, Kaiba decided to pull aside. He parked inside one of the bays near a local fast food restaurant. Quickly dialling Fugata, his raised his phone to his ear. The least the man could do was maintain the vehicles he was driving or even remember to fill up the gas...

Just great, he didn't even have the deceny to answer. Kaiba roughly slammed the car door and squeezed the bridge of his nose. It was some luck he was having! He looked up through the glass window and recalled he had stopped in front of one of Mokuba's favorite places to eat. Burger World was an American based fast food chain in Domino.

His eyes scanned the array of diners. Most were obease middle-aged men, but eventually he caught sight of someone that was far from repulsive. Rebecca Carter. What was she doing here? The petite teen was dressed in a work uniform and had a small notebook in her hands. It looked like she was working here, but that couldn't be. Part-time jobs were against their school rules. His curiosity was what eventually lured him in.

The restaurant owner grinned as he saw CEO enter through the main door. What was a sophisticatied man like Seto Kaiba doing in a fast-food burger joint? Hell, he couldn't have asked for better advertising. The man rushed over to greet him, roughly patting him on the back. Kaiba couldn't help but look around with disapproval. The place had really changed since he last brought Mokuba here. Burger World used to be full of young kids and families, yet the guy had managed to turn it into a Japanese Hooters.

Kaiba was quickly shown to a table by the excited business owner. Sitting down at a booth he raised his elbows to prevent them from touching the laminate surface. The shiny white material was illusive and one would be a fool to think it was ever properly cleaned. The man clasped his hands together eagerly before asking the brunette a question he wished he heard wrong.

"So what do you like, breasts or thighs?"

Immediately he began to feel queasy in his stomach. Something told the teen billionaire that he wasn't referring to the southern fried chicken on the menu. Being a buisenessman Kaiba knew all about talking in riddles, he knew how much people loved to play games.

"The latter," he replied modestly, knowing that the first reply would give him Gardner and second would get him Carter.

"Come here, Rebecca!" Kaiba heard him say. "We've got a special customer."

Rebecca walked over and he had to take a deep breath to take it all in. Her black hair was swept to one side revealing a pair of silver hoop earrings. The black t-shirt she wore fitted firmly with the logo reading "In burgers we trust." The pair of blue jean shorts were well very short. They revealed most of her thighs and seemed to outline her best assets. Kaiba liked big butts and he could not lie.

As her eyes met his, Rebecca knew at once she was busted. Part-time jobs were against Domino high's rules and those found breaking those rules could face punishment such a suspension or expulsion. The three people with an exception to this rule being Kaiba, Duke and Yugi. How unlucky for her.

"May I take your order?" she questioned, trying her best to remain collected and professional.

Kaiba wasn't the slightest bit interested in ordering from the menu, only a barbarian would. He was more worried about the fact that she was here, working for one of Domino's biggest perverts. The brunette had no issue with being blunt and straight to the point.

"What the hell are you doing here?"

"Excuse me?"

"You heard me. What the hell are you doing working in this dump?"

Rebecca's calm demenor quickly changed after hearing the harshness in his voice. His tone almost seemed frustrated, but his eyes showed concern. He didn't look smug or complacent, instead genuinely disappointed like a parent who cared.

"Can we not have this conversation right now?" she said dismissively in a hoarse whisper. Her eyes quickly moved to her terrified friend. It wasn't only herself she was worried about. Kaiba clearly dispised Téa meaning that she could get busted too.

Seto Kaiba was a stubborn man. Hell, he knew knew it and so did the whole of Domino. There was no way he was going to let something like this go. Not a chance.

"Oh, this conversation is happening." he said firmly, tapping his hand on the table. Kaiba immediately grimaced upon the realisation of what he'd done. He hadn't planned on touching that. "Are you aware of the concequences of working here?"

Rebecca wasn't daft, she knew exactly what would happen if she was caught. She knew the magnitude of the risk she was taking, but in the end it would be worthwhile. The sooner she saved up money, the sooner she could see her sister again.

"Look, I need the money." she started to explain.

"There are others ways of earning it." he emphasised. "This isn't what you deserve. You shouldn't be busting your ass for minimum wage. You shouldn't be working for this creep."

Alright, not what Rebecca had been expecting. Instead of babbling on about how many school rules she had broken, he was worried about her. Worried about what was best for her, her wellbeing, what she deserved...

"It's employment,"" Rebecca said defensively.

Kaiba gave a mirthless chuckle. "Try exploitation."

Deep down she knew he had a point, something just didn't feel right about her new boss. Rebecca did notice his lingering stares at her, the way he would always rest his hand on her lower back and wink at her when no one was looking. There was even something up with her work uniform. No way was it a company requirement to wear clothes so short and tight.

"Not all of us run a successful billion dollar company." she sighed deeply.

"I'm aware," he responded slowly, before pausing for a few seconds. "What exactly do you need the money for?

She unconciously bit her lip, increasing the curiosity within him. What had to be so important that would make her risk everything? Kaiba usually wasn't one to pry, but he felt he had to know.

"You wanna do ballet with Gardner?" Kaiba asked jokingly.

"No." Rebecca laughed light-heartedly .

"Are you saving money for college?" he questioned again, his tone becoming more serious.

"No." she repeated again.

"Then what?"

"I need money to go to Connecticut." Rebecca confessed, trying not to get sentimental as the words left her mouth. "I really miss my sister."

Kaiba knew under her circumstances he would have done the same. There wasn't a thing in the world he wouldn't do for his little brother. He looked deep in thought, before she saw him removing a checkbook from one of his pockets. Quickly scribbling on a page, he tore it off and handed it to her.

"Here, this should cover it."

Rebecca looked down at the check that had been forced in her hand and she couldn't believe what she was seeing. The amount on the check read $10,000 USD.

What is this?" she demanded confusedly.

"You can read." Kaiba said raising a brow. "This should be enough to cover flights, accomodation, food..."

The amount written on the check was more than a little generous, it was insane. Why would he do this for her? Was Seto Kaiba able to feel empathy?

"I can't accept this." Rebecca exclaimed shaking her head.

"Why not?" he frowned, knowing how stupid it was for her to reject such an offer.

"I just can't." she said a second time.

Kaiba watched in horror as she tore it up before tossing it into the garbage. It must've been pride because he knew she wasn't stupid. He clenched his teeth in anger. How dare she! He was offering his help, but she didn't want it.

Before Kaiba had the chance to say anything, three guys had entered the restaurant. He rolled his eyes as he watched the pervert boss click his fingers at Rebecca. Following his signal, she rushed over as if she were some canine obeying her master. Even though this irritated him, he said nothing.

He tried his best to sus out the three individuals at the corner booth. They appeared to be three white American males in their early twenties. Two of them seemed to be quite macho, but one of them was a pretty-boy much like himself. Even Kaiba had to admit he was good-looking with his sandy blonde hair and blue eyes.

He watched on as she repeated a line that she would have rehearsed many times. "Welcome to Burger world," she said in an ethusiastic manner. "May I take your order?"

"You're a far way from home." the blonde gave a friendly smile.

Rebecca smiled back. "It seems like you are too."

He nodded. "I was born and raised in Maryland, but I'm a student at Stanford. Where are you from?"

"California, but I'm not in college." Kaiba heard her tell him. "I'm still high school. We only moved here because my dad started working for a big gaming company."

"My gaming company," Kaiba murmured to himself.

"Wow, I wouldn't have guessed you were in highshool." he admitted sounding quite suprised. "You seem more mature."

"Thanks," Rebecca replied blushling slightly. "I've never really heard anyone say that before."

"I'm Jesse," he said politely taking her hand. "You are..."

"Rebecca," she introduced warmly, shaking his hand. "If you like you can Bec, I mean most of my friends do."

Kaiba noticed the flirtacious body language between them. Clearly the college boy had started it, but for some reason she was going along with it. He swore he'd seen that light in her eyes before, but only then she was looking at him.

Abruptly one of the trio cleared his throat. "Man, can we hurry up and order? I'm starving!"

The blonde gave a small chuckle, making Kaiba scoff to himself. He was trying to keep up with the nice guy facade, but he wasn't fooling him. The CEO knew he was clearly annoyed that their conversation had been interrupted.

"Sorry guys," he replied slightly flustered. "We'll get three cheeseburgers with fries and sodas."

"Sure," Rebecca quickly jotted down the order.

Kaiba watched him borrow her pen before writing on a napkin. Was he giving her his number? Something twisted inside the young CEO'S chest. He knew now was the perfect time to leave, but he couldn't bring himself to do it. He wanted to see what would happen, wondering what this guy had that he didn't.

Rebecca took the order to the kitchen and brunette continued to listen in on the conversation.

"Jesse, you're really into her?"

The blonde grinned at his two friends. "Of course, she's cute."

If Kaiba kept telling himself that he didn't care maybe he wouldn't, but even he knew of his own denial. The green eyed monster called jealously explained exactly how he felt. If he hadn't spent the start of the school semester acting like Domino's biggest asshole maybe this wouldn't be happening. He had only himself to blame.

The flirtacious banter at the table continued, it was as if she forgot he even existed. Perhaps she knew how he felt and wanted to torture him or maybe she just didn't care. Kaiba felt angry thinking of ways he could plot his revenge. He could always go to the school board and clue them in on her illegal afterschool activities. She would be punished, but what was the real punishment for? For wanting anyone that wasn't him?

His cell phone lit up, showing an endless schedule of meeting and deadlines. Who was he kidding? He didn't have time for this, he didn't have time for a teenage romance. Nothing could ever happen between him and Carter, it just wasn't in the cards for them. They weren't destined for each other.

Within a few minutes, he saw Rebecca return to their table. He didn't know how much more of this he could take, so he rose from the table in anticipation to leave.

"So cutie, you wanna swing by my hotel tonight?" the blonde winked. "I could show you around, it's a nice room."

The teenage girl immediately became flustered, clearly far too innocent to hear such a request. "I'm busy with lots of homework." she replied coyly.

The pretty boy smirked as if he enjoyed her reaction. "I know you want to,"

That's when Kaiba saw it, he saw the bastard roughly grab her behind. The unwanted advance eliciting the same fearful expression that she had in the allyway. If he thought he could get away with this he was sadly mistaken. He felt immense anger spreading through his body. The same level of anger that he imagined turned Bruce Banner into the hulk.

Kaiba didn't try to fight it, stop it, control it. In a matter of no time, he found himself towering over the table with the three yankees. The blonde looked up in suprised and the others did too. He knew this was a rare sight, he had only ever seen the billionaire on a television screen.

"Hey, you're the guy who invented the Duel disk!" he observed.

"You're the perceptive fool who's about to get his ass kicked." the brunette retorted glaring at him.

"Woah, woah, slow down!" the American held up his hands in surrender. "What did I do?"

The CEO scoffed at the pathetic reply. The curriculum at Standford had gone down the drain because this guy was the definition of stupid. How could he not realise he was at fault?

"You see that girl over there?" he said, pointing toward Rebecca. "Stay away from her. Don't talk to her, don't go near her, don't even look at her. Do you understand?"

The young adult gave a disguntled laugh, he was having a hard time taking Kaiba seriously. "Why should I listen to you?"

He smirked confidently. "If you know who I am then you know what I'm capable of. I am a very powerful man and I could make things happen to you. Don't make me do them."

"Oh yeah?" the blonde challenged agressively taking a stance. "What exactly are you gonna do, beat me up with a hologram!?

The loud shattering of a plate was enough to capture the attention of all the diners. The menacing glare Kaiba gave him was enough to make the onlookers shudder. Even the restaurant owner watched on with wide eyes, this couldn't be good for his buisness. Rebecca rushed over knowing she was only one who could diffuse the situation.

"Can we talk outside?"

Kaiba silently followed Rebecca outside. He could feel the people watching him as he walked out the door, some were even filming him with their phones, but he didn't care. The only person he did care about was the girl right in front of him, the girl that couldn't seem to keep herself out of trouble.

"What's the matter with you?" Rebecca hissed, folding her arms close to her chest.

"Shouldn't you be asking the same question to your boyfriend?" he answered sacastically. "He's the one who can't take no for an answer."

"Well, I didn't ask for you help." she said stubbornly.

"That doesn't mean you don't need it."

Her eyes darkened with anger. "Oh, what's that supposed to mean?"

"It means I'm not the only one who thinks you have poor judgement. The reality is the world is a bad place and that's the truth Rebecca. Life isn't some fairytale with happy endings. Open your eyes."

"I'm not made of glass." she managed to croak out.

"You say you're not made of glass, but you're fragile." Kaiba stated matter-of-factly. "Fragile things need protection. Honestly, what would you have done if I never showed up in that allyway."

"I don't know." Rebecca murmured.

"If I didn't show up now?"

"I could've handled it." she cried out defensively. "What are you trying to say Kaiba?"

"I'm saying you should start taking some responsibilty for yourself." he said firmly. "Think with your head and not with your heart. I bet its always your emotions that get you into this mess."

"So what I'm stupid?"

"No, just naive."

His words hit hard like a slap to the face. Rebecca thought things were getting better between them, but felt as if she couldn't have been more wrong. How could she have been so blind, nothing had changed about Kaiba. He was the same terrible person he had always been.

"You're right, the world is a cruel place." she said despondently. "People lie, manipulate and betray to get what they want.

Kaiba seemed relieved that she was finally coming to an understanding. If there was anyone who knew the unfairness of the world it was him. He had been through so much, having lost his parents at a very young age. Since then it seemed the only person he could trust was himself. No matter what happened, it always seemed as if the world was out to get him.

"They are selfish, don't do things out of the kindness own hearts." Rebecca continued. "There's always an ulterior motive. Sometimes you want to see the goodness in people when there is nothing there."

"Exactly," he agreed.

"I'm glad I saved you from that lawsuit Kaiba." Rebecca finished, causing his blood to run cold.

Oh god, he had actually forgotten about that. What he had said in the hospital that day had completely slipped his mind. His mind wondered if he would have still said the same thing knowing she was awake. Kaiba coudn't deny saying it. He didn't mean it, not one word. Still, he thought they were past all that. They were past all that.

~Flashback~

His cell phone began to ring. "Kaiba!" he answered, as he hastily pulled his cell phone up to his ear.

"Sir," Roland's voice spoke through the receiver. "Have you seen the girl, is she alright?"

"How many times do I have to tell you people?" Kaiba snapped. "I don't care about her."

"But sir, it was you who requested that we search for her in the first place." Roland objected.

"I know, but that's because I had to go after you and fix all your mistakes!" he scoffed.

"What do you mean Mr Kaiba?"

"They were planning to question her about the earlier accident when she woke up," Kaiba explained. "Luckily I was here to shut them down."

"But she gave you her word."

"And I wouldn't trust it." Kaiba snorted. "Look, the only reason I came here was to make sure that she would shut her mouth. To be completely honest, if she hadn't been so stupid to be knocked down by the limousine earlier, I wouldn't have cared less if she never made it out of that alleyway."

There seemed to be a long pause on the other end of the phoneline. It was possible that Roland was probably still coming to terms with what a heartless jerk Kaiba was being.

"That's another lawsuit I don't have to deal with," Kaiba said deeply sighing. "Tell my brother I'll be home in ten." With that, he hung up and stormed out of the hospital room.

~End of Flashback~

Kaiba's own words echoed in his head. He had never felt more ashamed...

"I- I didn't mean..." he began quickly.

"You know what? Maybe this whole thing with us being friends isn't working. I'm pretty sure Mokuba would give you the title of brother of the year, despite the fact that you're one of the biggest assholes around. Which makes me wonder why you even bother making such an effort with me. Stay away from me!"

How ironic, he had remembered telling her the exact same thing on the first day they met. He could imagine the words cutting her as she had done now. Suddenly his vision started getting cloudy. Crap, he couldn't do it. He had to remember Gozoburro's one golden rule. Never let them see you cry.

Kaiba stood there thinking of what he wanted to say. A bunch of confessions, apologies and even some verbal assults. He clenched his teeth, as an unfamilar pain spread through his chest.

"This is the last time I do anything for you." he said walking away, his icy exterior cracking like cheap glass.

Three drunk men staggered into an alleyway, one of them so pissed that he was about to fall over. The American college students didn't seem to care one bit that it was half past midnight and their hotel was two towns away. They were too intoxicated to care about the hands of time, some would say that they were simply enjoying their stay in Japan, others would think not. They continued to roar with laughter, finding humor in everything that the other said.

"Did you see that girl at Burger world," one began loudly. "She so wanted me."

"Yeah," another nodded. "I could tell by way she was looking at you with those Bambi eyes. She was practically begging for you to fuck her."

"Man you were so close." a third voice joined in. "I can't believe that Kaiba guy showed and messed things up."

Suddenly they heard a noise making them flinch. They were tough guys and didn't scare easy, but the reality was they weren't alone. In fact, they were being watched. "You know, you shouldn't touch what doesn't belong to you." spoke an eery voice.

"Huh, wha- who's there?"

A white-haired individual emerged from the shadows. Just looking at him he didn't seem to be much of a threat, he had a slim build and was only around 5'7 in height. If anyone of them were to challenge him to a fight, they could've taken him out in a matter of seconds. He laughed darkly as he began to walk closer to them.

"Pretty necklace." the first one jeered, noting the circular object he wore around his neck.

"Whats your problem?!" the other demanded.

"My problem?" the mysterious individual repeated. "I already told you. You couldn't keep your hands off my woman and now you will rue the day you imbeciles were ever born!"

"You just walked into a world of hurt pal!" the other said cracking his knuckles.

He smirked and didn't seem to be phased by any of their threats, instead he removed a singular card from his pocket. "This is what happens when you trifle with me!" He exclaimed. "Chain energy."

Immediately they were bound by thick ropes, not knowing how they got there or where they had appeared from. They were immobilized, no matter how hard they tried they couldn't move...

"What on earth? I'm stuck!" one of them yelped.

"Me too!"

The fiend began to laugh maniacally as he could see that their struggle was futile. Their anguish served as his amusement as they yelled at the top of their lungs and twisted from side to side. It was all useless, nothing could free them from his shadow magic.

Walking up to one of them, he roughly grabbed hold of his hair. "Are you enjoying yourself?" He asked, giving a sadistic grin.

"You're fucking crazy man!" He cried out. "Just let us go."

"End all the fun?" their tormenter laughed. "I don't think so, you see my punishment isn't done just yet. Don't you want to see what my "pretty necklace" can do?"

The leader of the trio shut his eyes shut hoping that it was all just some bad dream but it wasn't. What was happening was indeed very real and there was nothing he could do about it. He hoped and prayed for it all to be over soon and regretted his actions earlier at the fast food restaurant. If he had known that these were the consequences he would have kept his hands to himself in the first place.

"N-no..."

"Now, where was I?" the sadist pondered out loud. "Oh yes, I remember. I was about to send you to a place of eternal darkness. A place where the shadows will feed on your souls, a place where you will remain for all eternity."

"Wha- what are you talking about?" one of them stammered nervously.

"Okay, we're sorry!" the first yelled quickly. "Is that what you wanted to hear?"

He chuckled to himself. "I've already promised the shadows your souls and I don't want to disappoint them. This is what you get when you try and hurt Rebekah!"

The object around his neck began to sway wildly, emitting a blinding light. There were the sound screams which were soon drowned out by a loud ringing sound. Once the light had disappeared, three unconscious bodies hit the pavement. They lay there still, lifeless. Looking down at the three of them with disdain, Bakura kicked one of them just to make sure that his work was done.

"Now do you see? "There is nothing that will stop me from loving you, protecting you Rebekah." He said." Its been 5000 years, but this time I promise I'll get it right. I've become the man you want me to be and someday I know you'll trust me, or maybe love me in return." He gave a small smile. "One day we'll be together. Nothing will ever come between us."

Suddenly his smile disappeared, he realized there was one thing that could come between them. "Seto Kaiba," he scowled, glancing at the three bodies. If you dare stand in my way I promise you'll meet a similar fate."

For those who were waiting for it, there's your Bakura action! It turns out Kaiba wasn't the only one looking out for Rebecca at Burger World. :O

What do you guys predict wiil happen next? I would love to know.

See you next chapter!
