Author's Notes: Y'all. When I tell you this chapter gave me a hard time...it gave me such a hard time. I've been working on it for so long and nothing I did felt all that right. I finally finished all my edits to the point where I was okay posting this. Without further adieu, here's the next flashback chapter.

The Geek Squad, as they'd been not-so-affectionately dubbed, had not always paid much attention to Naomi Kaiba. She was in their year and a lot of their classes, but she seemed as disinterested in being their friend as in her class work. They'd been civil, sure, but she didn't talk to them, so they didn't really go out of their way to talk to her, either. The only one she made an effort with was Marik, and it was assumed that was because of their siblings dating and being a power couple.

Therefore, when she showed up at their lunch table for the first-time during sophomore year, they were all pretty confused.

Marik, of course, seemed the least concerned with the new development. "Guys, you all know Naomi, right? Naomi, this is… everyone," he gestured vaguely, digging in his schoolbag to pull out the lunch he packed for himself.

There was a light murmur of greetings, with Yugi being sure to wave and smile wide at the new guest.

"Hey, everyone. Please, don't let me interrupt," she gave them a sickly-sweet smile and motioned to Duke, who was trying to explain to them the new game he was working on, hoping to impress his father once it made it big.

The green-eyed boy in question let out an awkward cough before continuing with his explanation, something about dice and a board ('Super original,' thought Naomi as she reached for her own lunch, packed away neatly by the cooks at her house). After not even a minute longer, he stopped short again.

"I'm sorry, I just…" he shook his head. "Why are you here?"

The table erupted with a chorus of protests – "Duke!" "Don't be rude!" "What the hell, man?" – but Naomi just chuckled.

"Thanks for being blunt, as usual," she mumbled. She took a deep breath as her mind tried to come up with the best way to say what she needed to say. "Okay, to be totally honest, this was not my idea. I know none of us are really friends." She ignored Yugi's small protest and Marik's kick under the table. "But it's been pointed out to me that I, you know, need friends, and people to hang out with. Since I kind of only have Marik, and my brother, and Atem – the latter of who are graduating this year." She was nervous, trying not to let it show but her finger was absentmindedly wrapping itself around a blue curl as she rambled. "And I figure you guys can't be all that bad if Marik likes you and Atem practically sings your praises so, yeah. I'm here. So, what do you say? Got room for one more in the Geek Squad?"

Yugi moved to respond, smile wide, but Téa spoke over him first. "Well, I think it's only fair if we have a couple of minutes to discuss this?" She smiled tightly, glancing over at the rest of the group. Naomi pretended she didn't know why.

Sensing the seriousness of the situation, Joey cleared his throat, put on a fake posh accent, and spoke, "Why, yes, the council must deliberate," which earned him a couple of the laughs he was hoping to elicit.

Naomi bit her lip to stifle her own laughter. "Would it be frowned upon to bribe the council with some of the school's fresh baked cookies?"

Joey's eyes widened and he tried not to smile at the thought of a cookie. Not breaking the voice, he replied, "It would be a dirty bribe, but one the council might accept."

Naomi giggled, grabbing her wallet from her backpack. "Alright, I'll be over there while the council deliberates then," she answered. She nudged Marik's arm. "Come on, you, I can't carry them all myself."

When she was a few steps away, he turned to the rest of them. "For the record, my vote is yes. Please." He got up, making his way to follow his friend at the counter where the line for the fresh baked cookies had started forming.

"So, what do we say?" Tristan asked, glancing around the table.

"I vote no," Téa answered.

"Why? Aren't you always saying you want female friends?" he replied.

"Yeah, but she's not nice. She's Kaiba with blue hair and boobs."

"She doesn't seem that bad, and she seems like she's trying," Bakura piped up.

"'You can't be all bad' is trying?" Duke spoke.

"I vote yes," Yugi spoke, finally getting a word in. "Come on, guys, she can be fun, and really nice when she wants to… and alright, full disclosure: I know Atem was the one who suggested she make her own friends…"

Téa groaned. "I really don't know what he even sees in her."

"Other than being gorgeous?" Tristan mumbled low, resulting in an elbow to the rib from Joey. "Uh, yeah, me neither."

"They're at the front of the line, so I think we should wrap this up," Bakura pointed out.

"I trust Yugi's judgment, so I'm voting yes," Joey spoke.

"I'm siding with Joey and Yugi, so I do too. I think everyone deserves a chance," Tristan added.

"Right, it's got nothing to do with her looks?" Duke asked.

"Considering she has a boyfriend, and I'm not a tool, no, it doesn't," Tristan argued back.

"I agree that there's no harm in giving her a chance. Besides, we're all friendly with Mokuba, aren't we?" Bakura added. "I say yes."

"Duke, what's your vote?" Yugi asked.

"And remember, you weren't all that nice to us when we first met you, either," Joey pointed out.

"Alright, I'll pay it forward," Duke conceded. "I vote yeah."

All eyes turned to Téa, who sighed. She didn't think there'd ever be a time when she got along with the spoiled and self-centered girl who wanted to be their friend. But her friends all did, and Atem… Well, in Naomi's own words, she couldn't be all that bad if Atem liked her, right? Plus, he'd wanted them to become friends with her…

"Alright, she can join the gang. Maybe it will be nice having another girl in the group," she forced a smile, willing herself to be positive.

The timing was perfect, as Marik and Naomi walked back to the table, each holding a plate of four hot and gooey cookies.

Joey cleared his throat again for effect, launching into that fake voice he'd been using. "The council has come to a decision."

Naomi sat down, twirling her hair around her finger again. "Am I being banished from the table despite my offering?" she asked, motioning to the cookies that the group had already started grabbing at.

"You're not being banished," Yugi answered, chuckling. "Welcome to the group."
