That night, Dr. Belloq and the Nazis boarded the U-boat, the Wurrfler, as Indy and Marion boarded the tramp steamer, the Bantu Wind, since after Sallah and the ship's captain, Simon Katanga, made a deal to bring the two good people and their cargo as well as the Ark of the Covenant back home. But while Major Toht and Irma were walking to their separate room in the U-boat, in which of course Major Toht requested, the two siblings were having a huge argument about how the mission turned out to be ever since they left Germany and how he and the other Nazis thought that Irma was the main reason why it didn't go as planned.
"This is all your fault, Irma!" said Major Toht.
"MY fault?!" said Irma, putting her hand on herself. "How is zhis my fault?!"
"You lost zhe Ark vith your reckless driving!" said Major Toht.
"Vell, maybe if you and the others veren't so harsh, I wouldn't have lost it!" said Irma. "Vhat did you vant me to do instead?! Stay in the barrack for the entire trip?!"
"Ja!" said Major Toht. "You know, Dietrich should've done zhat to you! You clearly never learn your lessons!"
"Then you should have just let me stay back in Berlin since you think I am useless and not helpful!" said Irma.
"If it veren't for your constant begging!" said Major Toht.
When they entered their separate room and put their stuff down, the two were still arguing.
"Irma Toht, you have become so annoying and obnoxious lately!" said Major Toht, groaning in anger. "I cannot stand it!"
"I am not!" said Irma.
"You are, too!" said Major Toht. "The Nazi soldiers are right, you haven't grown up one bit! You are so childish!"
He looks straight at his younger sister and said to her, "When vill you ever stop being such a veak, clumsy baby?!"
Irma just gives him an angry look while being silent.
"Vell?" said Major Toht, waiting for an answer. "Vhat are you going to do about it?"
Major Toht gets in her face as he shouts, "WIMP!"
Irma has had enough with her brother talking down to her. But since she didn't want to tell him about her plan to flee her home country because of Nazism, she instead said just a few words.
"Screw you, Arnold…" Irma said angrily, yet also in a quiet voice.
She walks towards the bathroom.
"Irma Toht, you come back here!" said Major Toht. "Get back here zhis instant!"
Irma turns around and gives her older brother the middle finger as she stomps into the bathroom and slams the door.
"Zhat stupid Arnold..." she said to herself, all angry and stressed. "Ever since Hitler took over Germany, everything's been awful! Even my own brother! Ooooh, how can zhis get any worse?!"
Major Toht tried to open the bathroom door, but Irma locked it so no one can get in. Being very upset and angry, she didn't want anyone to go near her or to speak to her.
"IRMA!" shouted Major Toht, banging on the bathroom door. "IRMA ODETTA TOHT, OPEN ZHIS DOOR! OPEN UP RIGHT NOW!"
Irma decides to not say a word until her brother leaves her alone. But he won't leave and continued to bang on the door in anger.
"IRMA!" shouted Major Toht. "IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIRMAAAAAAAAAA!"
Just then, Colonel Dietrich stood outside of the room and peeked in.
"Major Toht?" he said to the Gestapo agent. "May I have a word vith you for a moment? Belloq and Gobler need you on zhis..."
"Sure," said Major Toht.
Major Toht exits the room and goes with Colonel Dietrich to talk with him as well as with Dr. Belloq and Gobler.
"So vhat is zhis about?" asked Major Toht.
"It is about zhe mission," said Colonel Dietrich. "And Irma…"
"My sister…?" said Major Toht. "Vhat about her…?"
"I'm afraid she cannot help us on zhis mission anymore," said Colonel Dietrich.
"Dietrich is right," said Gobler. "Things have been terrible since she came along here."
"Has something went wrong for your sister to be like this, Major Toht?" asked Dr. Belloq.
"Uhhh..." said Major Toht.
"Does it have to do vith her guard job?" asked Gobler.
"Is this normal?" said Dr. Belloq.
"I do not know why she's been like zhis..." said Major Toht, unsure about his sister's behavior.
"I think you should talk to her about zhis, Toht," Colonel Dietrich suggested. "Your sister is probably hiding something..."
"You're probably right about zhat, Dietrich," said Major Toht, then looking at the door to his and Irma's room and saying, "Excuse me for a minute, men."
Major Toht walks back into his and Irma's room, in which he sees that the bathroom door was open again. But Irma wasn't in there. In fact, she wasn't in the room at all. Realizing his sister was missing for the second time, he ran back to the three men.
"Irma's not here!" cried Major Toht, running back to the group. "My sister's gone!"
"Vhat?!" said Colonel Dietrich.
"Vhere did she go zhis time?!" asked Gobler.
"I don't know!" said Major Toht. "Can someone please find my little sister?!"
"Men!" Colonel Dietrich said to the soldiers. "Organize a search party!"
Everyone started to look for Irma once again.
Where Irma was, she was on the top of the Wurrfler after reaching it through the hatch. The top was surrounded by railings so no one can fall overboard. So to be safe, Irma kept her feet on the floor and only placed her arms and hands on the railing. Being very dark outside, she can only see the night sky full of stars and only hear the sound of the water from the sea. The poor woman was so upset that she didn't want to be inside the U-boat where everyone else was, so that is why she went outside. Also, she was no longer angry, but instead...she was very sad.
"Maybe I vas wrong to get mad at my brother..." Irma said to herself, then shaking her head and saying, "But he got mad at me first! All because of zhat stupid Ark!"
She paused for a moment and said, "Does he even like me...? I am not sure anymore since he treats me so badly and tortures me all zhe time...Yet...I do love Arnold...I wish he vasn't so abusive and evil!"
Irma gets very sad and started to get teary as she said, "He vas my best friend...!"
The German woman puts her head down in her arms on the railing as she began to cry in deep sorrow. When just then, Major Toht opened the hatch and walked onto the top of the U-boat where Irma was, since he and the rest couldn't find her inside.
"Irma?" Major Toht said. "You up here?"
Irma hears him, but doesn't say anything. She tried to stop crying and hide her tears, but it was harder this time.
"Klein schwester?" said Major Toht. "Bist du in ordnung?"
Irma turns her head and looks at her brother while still in tears.
"Are you alright, little sister?" Major Toht asked, as he walks over to her.
"Nein Arnold..." said Irma.
"Vhat's the matter?" asked Major Toht.
"Everything…!" said Irma.
"Vhat do you mean everything?" Major Toht said.
"Zhe way everyone is treating me..." said Irma. "Dietrich und Gobler especially. Belloq is questioning me now, though he never treated me badly. But everybody else thinks I'm just a little girl in a grown voman's body. They are right, I cannot do anything right! I ruined zhis mission!"
"Vhat?" said Major Toht. "Zhat's nonsense!"
"But I lost zhe Ark..." said Irma. "Hitler vants it so badly, and I blew it..."
She looks down and said, "He vill have mein head for sure now..."
"Ve can still find zhe Ark, Irma," said Major Toht. "Ve just have to track down Dr. Jones."
"But Arnold, ve don't know vhere he is," said Irma. "He took control of the truck vith zhe Ark and just disappeared! How are ve going to-"
She starts to cry again, but feels shame as she covers her eyes and says, "I'm crying again, I'm sorry...!"
Irma regained herself, took a breath, uncovered her eyes, and looked at her brother.
"Arnold...?" she said. "I have to make a confession..."
"A confession?" said Major Toht. "Vhat is it you vant to tell me?"
"It's about the reason why I came vith you on zhis mission," Irma said, as she sighs. "It's not because I vanted to help you out and the other Nazis find zhe Ark..."
"Then vhat is it?" asked Major Toht.
"Please do not get mad at me for zhis...But..." Irma said, as she gets teary again. "The reason is..."
Tears fall down Irma's face as she said, "I vanted to spend more time vith you..."
Major Toht was surprised to hear this. In fact, he was very surprised to hear that his sister wanted to be around him.
"You…You vanted to spend time vith me?" Major Toht said to his sister.
"I did…" said Irma, nodding her head.
"Is…Is zhis true?" Major Toht said.
"Yes...!" said Irma, starting to cry once again.
"Vhy didn't you tell me before, Irma?" asked Major Toht.
"I thought it vouldn't be a good enough reason..." said Irma.
"Why wouldn't it?" Major Toht asked.
"Because I know missions are very important and should be taken seriously," said Irma. "Especially vhen it comes to pleasing our Führer."
She looks down and said, "But I did not vant to be by myself for several days..."
"Irma?" said Major Toht, as he puts his sister's head back up. "Is zhat vhy you vere begging so much to go vith me?"
"Ja…" said Irma. "I vanted to be with you, Arnold…"
"Vell, if you vanted to be with me," said Major Toht, "vhy didn't you say so in the first place?"
Irma shrugs while still in tears.
"Irma…?" Major Toht, gently pulling his little sister close to him. "Come here..."
He starts hugging his little sister. Irma holds onto him while continuing to cry.
"Zhat's it, let it all out..." said Major Toht.
Irma continues to cry in her brother's arms. And after a few minutes, Irma finally stopped crying.
"You feel better now, Irma?" Major Toht asked her.
He doesn't hear a response.
"Irma?" said Major Toht, looking at his sister. "Irma...?"
He sees that Irma was in a deep sleep, even though she was standing up. She had cried herself to sleep in her brother's arms. And since it was nighttime and completely dark outside, Major Toht decided not to wake his sister up. And that the woman was already in her pajamas. So picks her up and carries her back inside the Wurrfler, where he sees Colonel Dietrich and Gobler, who were waiting until Irma was found.
"I found her..." said Major Toht.
"Good job, Toht," said Colonel Dietrich.
"Where vas she?" asked Gobler.
"On top of zhis U-boat," said Major Toht. "She just needed some time to herself."
He looks at Irma while she was sleeping in his arms and said, "I better put her to bed now. I vill see you all in the morning. Gute nacht."
Major Toht carries Irma into their room. He takes the woman's slippers off her feet, undid her hair, and tucked her into her bed as he removed her eyeglasses off her face and sets them to the side. But when he tried to let her go so he can go to sleep himself, Irma started whining. Though she was still in a deep sleep, she felt herself not holding onto anything.
"Huh…?" said Major Toht, getting confused. "Vhy is she doing zhat…?"
He thinks for a moment. He then remembers something that he used to do to Irma back when they were children, as well as before Nazism grew in Germany. Whenever Irma was having a nightmare and couldn't sleep, Major Toht would have his sister sleep by his side to let her know that she has him for comfort.
"Vell…" Major Toht said, looking at his bed. "Hope zhis vorks for her..."
He hears his little sister whine in her sleep as she picks her up and holds onto her.
"Okay okay, Irma," Major Toht said to her. "Your big brother's got you...Calm down..."
The Gestapo agent crawls into his own bed and places Irma right next to him. And once the covers were over themselves and Irma was in her brother's arms, Irma had finally stopped whining and was quiet. He hugs his sister and hangs onto her very close.
"Sleep well, my little sister..." said Major Toht.
He then went to sleep.
