Possibilities

Chapter 21

It's been two years!

The children have adjusted so well.

Dashia is 4 and is starting preschool, she was a little delayed, but we've been working with occupational and physical therapists to help her with her fine motor skills, and walking, because she was left in the crib for so long at the orphanage. She's doing better now but gets frustrated when she can't keep up with JC and the others running around.

JC is 5 and starting kindergarten and is having a blast! He loves going to school everyday and seeing his 'girlfriend' Regina, she's a fiery little redhead who is sassy and her mom (God Bless her) is going through a divorce, luckily (Julie, Regina's mom) is a lawyer herself and has a good one defending her, but Regina has all her moms sass and I swear Julie must go home and drink a gallon of wine a night. I promised her a girl's night out after her divorce was final and she was so thankful.

The twins Nicolai and Nikita are both 10 in 5th grade, we were afraid the child might have to start school a year behind when they did start, but while homeschooling, they did great and couldn't wait to start public school. They both play soccer and have same group of friends, they're very close, I love their twin relationship.

Sasha is 14 and actually skipped two grades, she tested in as a junior, the only hint that she isn't from America is the slight accent she has, she has worked hard day and night to get rid of any traces of her old life. I have no doubt that Sasha will go far, she is a math whiz, enjoys playing the cello, sings, dances, loves to be in any school production she can be in and willingly lets me takes pictures when my photography bug is biting.

Ivan, he's our wild child at 16. He got upset because we wouldn't get him a car like all his other friends. We explained to Ivan that things are earned and well, he had not earned a car, that's for sure and just because he was 16 didn't mean he deserved on. He was angry because Sasha was a grade ahead of him, because she had better grades, and she got to go on all these trips. We explained if he were in all the clubs Sasha was in, he would get to go on those too, he wanted to try out for football, so we sighed the paperwork, happy he was going to try for something, finally. He was built to play football, Demetri would always play with the kids, anything, anytime. But halfway through last year, Ivan changed and started acting out, grounding him didn't work, Sasha didn't know what was going on, the principal didn't have any answers either.

It was great to see our kids (mostly) doing great and enjoying school.

Demetri and I were the happiest we'd been in a long time, James, Irina, Sonia and my dad were all spoiling the kids rotten, my dad was going to take a crack at Ivan, saying he reminded him of James as a teen. That made me laugh, because thinking back it was true. James was always a moody, mopping teen and always wanted his way, except he got mixed up with the wrong crowd and drugs.

"Charlie, I think that would be great! Take Ivan for a weekend of fishing, maybe that's what he needs." Demetri sighed.

"Yeah, a weekend away from everyone. He might just be overwhelmed. Needs some one on one." My dad shrugged.

"Dad, you're the best." Kissing his cheek, I made him blush.

We called Ivan downstairs and filled him in on his weekend plans.

Standing with his arms crossed in a defiant way "Do I have a choice?" he asked.

My dad stands up and walks over to him, looking him in the eye "There's always a choice Ivan, but I'd really like to spend the weekend fishing with you. Is that okay?"

"Yeah, okay" Ivan shrugged. "Let me go pack." He ran up stairs and was back in a flash, my dad standing there with a sly smile on his face the entire time, a line I knew all too well, he'd used it on me many, many times.

"Have a good weekend sweetie. See you Sunday night." Standing on my tippy toes to kiss his cheek, he hugged me tight. "Thanks mom." He kissed my cheek too before leaving with dad.

"You dad is good!" Demetri laughed after they had gone.

"You don't know how many times I heard that line when I was growing up." I laughed.

James and Irina arrived shortly after to take JC, Dashia and the twins for the weekend, and Sasha was going to a friend's house for a sleep over.

"You've got a half hour to go and pack Mrs. Petrov, we're going away for the weekend, our first official kid free weekend in two years." Demetri smiled.

"Seriously? We're going away?" I laughed.

"Yes. Pack light. Swimsuit, shorts, t-shirt." He kissed me again and ushered me upstirs.

I ran upstairs and packed my bag; I saw his was on the bed. Threw in the necessities and I ready to go, kissing my children as they left, James and Irina dropping Sasha off for us too.

"You have our information if you need it." Demetri told James and thanked him again. Demetri went upstairs and got our bags, and we were off.

"I'm sorry this can't be a longer trip." Demetri pulled me towards the bedroom.

"I'm just happy for some alone time. I love our babies and wouldn't trade them for the world, but I miss waking up with just you." I straddled him and our vacation had begun.
