[Citadel, Batman, Kimberly]
[ Jacob]
I was left alone just looking at the ocean again, this has become my spot, people often said that everyone would ban together and rebuild when everything ended.
They were both right and wrong about that.
Panic spreads first, with it, looting-panic shopping and well just crim, luckily the only thing we had to worry about was a bunch of zombies.
There hasn't been anything to talk about, namely because of everyone as just been busy, either getting whatever they could be delivered to the island or trying to keep their minds off the apocalypse.
Hell even when everyone was inside the citadel- the bunker or the walls, no one said much, people were either trying to get food, clothes, and things to stay entertained.
The only thing I've done during these last few months is eating-drinking-taking baths and using my cards to keep the zombies away, very little time to socialize or talk to people.
I'm aware of what people have been doing in there, but I don't know what they are doing.
For example, I know how many people are inside a room, but unless I have something that can listen inside it, I won't know what they are saying.
The few people I've spoken to, are the ones that replace me and keep the island safe.
Kimberly is a good person but she 's getting worse, no it's more like whatever hope she had of ever going home are almost completely gone and she's starting to realize that.
Yeah, this is her life now and she has to adapt.
I guess that's why the news of us having to fight whatever survivors are out there affected her so much, there must have been a small part of her that wanted something of her old world, her old self to survive all of this.
"Hey go get some rest we'll take over" one of the soldiers says to me, behind him a mixture of soldiers and armed men walked out of the main door to the citadel.
The last man walks out, he's carrying a metal box, he begins to hand every man one of the cards I gave them, they still drain me when they're used, but the effect lessens when they are placed on the monsters, just like the citadel and the castle walls.
The effect is still there, but I don't feel it as much.
All of the men salute me and they begin to surround me, half-face me, while the other half looks at every other direction.
I start calling back the monsters I have patrolling one by one and the soldiers summon a monster every time I call back one of my monsters.
The men watch me as I walk back inside the citadel and I close the door behind me.
Protocol dictates I have to remove all clothing, take a shower, and get a full health inspection to make sure I don't have any infections, only after all of that do I get to put on a change of clothes.
I never took a chance to walk around or relax inside the citadel, even when everyone was gathering things and preparing for the zombies, I didn't bother relaxing.
I either spent my days reading whatever books these guys bought and shipped in, or I was busy moving the citadel around either making rooms bigger and overall making myself useful.
I know it doesn't make any sense, but try to spend a week without doing anything, you get extremely bored and look for things to do, It's also how I practiced using the cards and how I learned that I could let other people use them as long as I let them.
On one occasion one of the kids took one and tried to summon a creature, but the card didn't do anything, the cards few out of his hand and into mine after I called it back.
"You know how to abut you and I go get something to eat one of these days" I say to the doctor who just rolled her eyes at me.
"What you've already seen me naked more than once and well" I say as I look at her completely exposed figure.
We locked eyes and the look in her eyes changed, slowly a smirk formed on her lips.
"We both know its protocol, besides if you want to have sex with me, why don't you just push me down, after all, you are sitting on the bed"
We both know why" I say to her as I look up and wave at the soldiers who have their guns aimed at me.
"I'm starting to think I should leave the island" the moment the words left my mouth she froze in place and slowly placed the crystal she had in her hand next to me.
"Hey if you want to sleep with me, I'll just order them not to look" she says to me, her voice isn't as confident as usual.
Her face is getting closer and I wish I could be happy about it.
Her blond hair and light skin combined with her well-toned figure made her one hell of a beauty.
"I can't keep doing this" I say to her before our lips meet, then I felt the warmth of her lips and her young touch mine.
As much as I want to enjoy this I need her to do her job, so after a few moments, I pushed her off me.
"I have no reason to be here, the creatures they don't affect my monsters and it feels like I don't have a place here" I say to her.
I can her eyes briefly change color.
"So why don't you go and settle some of the other islands"
"No, what I mean is why don't you have your monsters build some kind of bridge from one island to another, that way you don't have to feel so trapped anymore" she says to me.
"...I want you to answer me honestly...am I a prisoner here...whats the real reason I wasn't offered a chance to leave"
I can see her smirk change into a what I want to belive is a genuine smile,
"Because we don't know if this place will vanish if you die"
Her eyes are shifting from one color to another before they settle in their original grey.
I watch her as she walks to a nearby table and picks up a set of clean clothes before handing them to me.
I change as fast as I can and I can hear her changing next to me, it's hard to hide any bite marks or injuries when you're not wearing any clothes.
Sometimes people panic, so the doctor doesn't wear any either, everyone is going to notice a naked person running around.
I don't bother to look at her, even if she is my doctor, the truth is we don't see each other that way.
As strange as it sounds when you see someone covered in blood and stinking of rotting meat or sweat and you find that no matter how attractive they are, you won't have any interest in them.
The citadel's walls are made of different stones, marvel- lime- volcanic rock and strange magic ones combined with some metal here and there.
The magic rocks light up in some of the hallways, that way when people are walking around at night it's never too dark.
There are schools and to be honest, I have no idea what they teach in them.
No that's not true, some classes teach kids how to use guns, perform first aid, martial arts and even how to properly talk smack and those are the normal ones.
Ther are computer classes, along with history- reading- math, and writing, but what on earth can some of the more unique one be teaching I really should find out.
"So where are you going?" she says to me as I walk down the hallway.
This doesn't happen, our routine is I get my check-up, change clothes and we go our separate ways, shes wearing the usual white labcoat and doctor cloths one would expect bit I can see the radion in her pocket.
"I was going to go see what the kids are learning, dop you want to come with me," I say to her before I take her radio, I try to turn it on but there's no sound, I check its batteries and I notice there not there.
"I'm not leaving you alone, not until I'm sure you won't do something stupid" she says to me.
"Samantha go home I'll be fine" I say to her, as I hand the radio back to her.
"Have you looked at yourself in a mirror, you're not fine."
"Unlike the rest of us, you haven't gotten any real sleep, I know all of this takes a toll on you and I don't even know if whatever sleep your getting is even enough"
I can see the worry in her eyes, but it's not for me, I can tell she's worried about being at the zombie's mercy.
"Your going home and you are going to get some sleep, after that Ill makes yous something to eat. "
"You need to relax, doctors orders," she says to me before taking my hand and leading me back to my house.
The door isn't open, nearly everyone stays away from it, no one wants to be near the guy that's close to the zombies.
From what Samantha has told me, the soldiers outside have a doctor for each of them, they work as their psychologist and regular doctor, there used to be women in the defense force but they soon stopped.
The days of women serving in any combat role was over, repopulation was their main purpose now.
"Well welcome" I say to Samantha as I opened the door and let her in, she immediately begins to look around and she starts to mumble something I cant hear.
The couch is near the front door and the moment I sit down I close my eyes and the world vanishes as sleep takes over.
[Doctor Samantha]
I knew this day would come, Jacob has been pushing himself too hard, he doesn't know it but everything here only works because he's allowing it to.
This new normal can only be maintained while he's here if he leaves, fear will spread and things will go from bad to worse, even if his cards don't run out of power.
He is both our only real defense and a figurehead, no one would believe that the same people that once caused nothing but trouble were trying to help them, so when everyone arrived as simple question was asked.
"Did you all see the guy controlling all of the monsters that are fighting the zombies?
As long as he's here he keeps them away and stops us from fighting each other"
That was all that people needed, we doctors, we were each appointed to a separate soldier, our job is to be doctors- wives- phycologists- mothers of their children and executioners should our husbands get infected.
All of the other women have already started living with their partners and this information has been kept from them.
If the soldiers knew that the only reason they were together was that they were appointed to them, one of two things would happen.
The men would demand another doctor, thereby hindering the efforts to keep them under control or continue doing the same things they were doing, however, they would begin to look for ways of doing things in secret.
Control had to be maintained within the citadel, any infighting would lead to the infection getting in.
I look at the crystal glowing in my pocket, like many others it doesn't need Jacob to exist someone that can use magic brought them in with them, but according to them, their magic cant be maintained indefinitely.
I exhale and I can feel the magic in the crystal activate.
"This is Samantha, I'm initiating procedure three, Jacob needs a day off he can't keep this up, team three you will have to take over his shift"
I can hear everyone acknowledging my words
