Chapter 12: Brink of War
Jack's POV
I laid on Blizzard's back as we flew. This was the better way to travel.
After we left the river, we traveled a lot faster. We landed only at night to rest, but we were up and traveling by that next morning Only taking breaks ever so often for the dragon's sake.
"Jack?" Elsa said from the saddle.
I got up, walked over to her and sat behind her. Blizzard didn't seem to care
"Yeah?"
"I was thinking, when we get back, what do you want to do?"
"What do you mean?"
"Well, we're married now, so do you want to stay in Arendelle, or move on to better pastures?"
I smiled. "I just want to be with you."
"No matter where we are?"
"No matter."
She smiled and leaned against me.
Anna and Trace flew over.
"Look!"
We looked to see the ocean.
"We made it to the other side!"
Hiccup and Toothless flew over to us.
"Let's touch down in that clearing there."
Our dragons started their descent towards the ground. But soon, we started seeing buildings, Viking buildings.
"What the...
Just then a net shot out and got Pocan and Grunt. They both fell.
"POCAN!" Rapunzel shouted.
Surge dove for them. His claws barely grabbed the nets and gently set them down.
We quickly landed and tried to get the nets off when we hear screaming.
"Wait, I know that scream." Hiccup said.
Just then, a dozen Vikings broke through the bush, led by a tattooed red-haired man
"Dagur?"
The red-haired man looked at Hiccup and his face lit up.
"Brother!"
He walked over and bear-hugged Hiccup.
"Brother?" Merida asked.
"It's a long story." Hiccup said, trying to breathe.
"By the Gods, Hiccup. Where have you been? Everyone back home thinks you're dead. I, of course, didn't believe it. You are a tough one to kill. I should know."
Hiccup smiled uncomfortably. "Well, an ocean god took up around the world and we had to fight some pirates, a giant crab, and some gods to save the world."
Dagur started laughing.
"And I thought I was crazy!"
We all just stared at him.
He stopped laughing.
"Oh, you're serious."
"Yep."
"Well, you are guests of New Thorsten. Even your native friend." Dagur said as he looked at Pocan.
Dagur then walked through the bush. We followed. We then came to the gates of New Thorsten. The wall was up high, with guards manning the wall.
"Dagur, are you expecting an attack?" I asked
"Yes, friend. Yes, we are."
The gates opened to show the people waited for what the patrol got. A lot of them gasped as Hiccup came through the door.
As we walked through the village, a big bulky man was talking to a woman.
"Excellent. Then you must know the Indians' whereabouts. We'll need that information for the battle."
"What battle?" she asked.
"We will eliminate these savages once and for all."
"No! You can't do that!" Hiccup said as we walked up.
"Hiccup!" the woman said.
"Hi, Mala."
"Oh? Can't I?"
"Look, we don't have to fight them," Anna said to them.
"And why is that?" Alvin asked.
I motioned to Pocan. "Pocan led us through these lands. They can help you."
"You're defending a savage?" Mala asked.
"They're not savages, they can help us. They know the land; they know how to navigate the rivers." Rapunzel said.
Pocan then stepped forward. "We can also help you grow food here."
"What kind of food?" Mala asked.
"They don't want to feed us, you ninnies! They want to kill us! All of us! They've got our gold, and they'll do anything to keep it!"
"Wait, you're here for gold?" Elsa asked.
"Alvin's been obsessed with it since we got here," Dagur said.
Pocan leaned over to me. "What is this gold?"
"Precious metal."
"I've never seen any."
Everyone gasped. Alvin turned to Pocan.
"Lies! Lies, all of it! Murderous thieves, there's no room for their kind in a civilized society."
"But this is their land!" Hiccup said, getting in Alvin's face.
"This is my land! I make the laws here. And I say anyone so much as looks at an Indian without killing him on sight, with an exception to this one here, will be tried for treason and beheaded."
…
Hiccup's POV
Alvin walked away fuming after making his decree. Dagur sighed.
"It was a mistake coming here."
I turned to Mala. "Mala, what happened? Why are you here?"
"Well, Alvin came to us trying to get us to go. When a kingdom attacked us. We had no choice but to go with them."
"What kingdom?" Elsa asked.
"I believe Corona." Mala said "But I'm not sure. Anyway, we came here three years ago and made this village, but Alvin made himself the overlord and tried to find gold here. Which in turn, provoked the natives. Relations have been tensed for a while, but a patrol disappeared and it put Alvin on the warpath, even though the patrol was found later."
I nodded. "We can't let him do this."
Pocan nodded. "If we could talk to the leader of the tribe into negotiating, would you?"
Dagur nodded. "We would. I can make Alvin sit and listen."
"But he still has the Outcasts. They'll follow him to the bitter end. They'll enforce the law."
"But the Berserkers and Defenders will back you if you can get them to negotiate."
…
General POV
That night, Hiccup and Pocan looked down at a map of the surrounding area that Mala gave them.
"If we go now, the village will be asleep," Pocan said.
"But if we don't go now, Alvin will probably attack in the morning."
As they got up, Hiccup looked at Merida, sleeping soundly. He sighed and kissed her forehead.
"I'm sorry," he whispered
So, with that, Hiccup and Pocan snuck out of the tent and through the gates. Then they ran into the forest.
But a member of Dagur's people, Bersi saw them leave. When he went to look who they were, Alvin came from behind and shoved him out.
"Follow them."
"Yes, sir."
"I want to know where they're sneaking off to."
"Yes, sir."
"And if you happen to see any Indians, shoot them." He tossed a crossbow at him.
"Yes, sir."
"Don't disappoint me."
…
Pocan and Hiccup run through the forest with haste. Hiccup knew what Alvin was capable of when it came to war, so they had to hurry.
They came to a meadow when they saw her. A little girl, looking around wildly.
Pocan knelt. "Hello there."
The girl looked at us with relief. "Thank goodness I found you."
Hiccup looked at her confusion. "You were looking for us?"
"My name is Atepa. I am the daughter of Chief Potwa. I came to warn you."
"Warn us of what?"
"My father has warriors from other tribes here. They plan to attack your village."
"Can we talk to your father?" Pocan asked.
"He won't listen until the six outsiders come."
"What six outsiders?"
"Our elder, Tokoto, had a prophecy saying that we'll be at war with your people until six outsiders come from the west. They will bring peace."
Hiccup thought about what he heard until he realized.
"That's us. The Big Six. We came from the west."
She smiled and hugged him. "Thank you. The spirits don't want war."
But what they didn't know, they were being watched. Alosaka, the top village warrior, watched with concern. And Bersi looked in astonishment. When hiccup bent down to hug her back, Alosaka felt like he was going to attack her and leaped into action.
Hiccup and Pocan jumped up as Alosaka charged at them. He tackled Hiccup to the ground and started to punch him. Hiccup pushed him off. Pocan grabbed Alosaka and tried to restrain him.
As that happened, Bersi ran across the meadow, loading his crossbow.
Alosaka got out of Pocan's grip and grabbed his knife. He sliced at Pocan, cutting his arm. He then lunged at Hiccup again, trying to stab Hiccup. He held back the knife as best as he could, trying to keep it from stabbing his throat.
Just as it seemed Hiccup was going to die, Bersi aimed the crossbow at Alosaka. Pocan looked to see this.
"NO!"
Bersi pulled the trigger. The crossbow bolt went right through Alosaka's heart. Hiccup threw him off and saw the bolt. He looked up to see Bersi.
"What have you done?"
Atepa screamed when she saw the crossbow bolt in Alosaka.
Voices were coming closer.
Hiccup turned to Pocan and Bersi.
"Get out of here."
"What!" Pocan said.
"Go!"
Pocan and Bersi ran off into the distance, soon warriors from the tribe grabbed Hiccup and started to drag him towards the village, with a sad Atepa following behind.
When they got to the village, the warriors showed Potwa the body of Alosaka.
"Who did this?"
"Atepa was out in the woods. Alosaka went to find her and this white man attacked them." A warrior said as he threw Hiccup before him.
Hiccup looked up to see Potwa pointing a spear at him.
"Your weapons are strong. But now our anger is stronger. At sunrise, he will be the first to die!"
"But father!" Atepa tried to protest.
"I told you to stay in the village. You disobeyed me. You have shamed your father!"
"I was only trying to help."
"Because of your foolishness, Alosaka is dead! Take him away."
The warriors took Hiccup to a tent and tied him up.
"I hope Merida and the others can get here soon." He whispered.
The War is upon them. Will the Six be able to stop it?
