Chapter 25
Matsuda
L's POV
Elena hadn't spoken to me in almost two days. She was beyond angry with me this time. I called her in and handed her a letter.
"If you wouldn't mind, could you deliver this to my wife. I'm worried about her."
"Of course."
She left the room and I hoped that my plan would work.
Elena's POV
I walked to the elevator and went to my room. I sat down in my favorite chair before opening the letter.
Elena,
I'm sorry. I know the way I handled the situation with Aizawa was wrong. I know he was a good friend of yours. I know I have a very bad habit of needing to have the last word. The last thing I want is for you to be angry with me. I can't concentrate on my work when you're angry, and I'm worried that this will affect the baby too. Please forgive me. I love you so much and knowing your so angry is killing me.
I smiled. I'd probably been a little too hard on him, but he was right. He should've handled it differently.
I waited until I knew L would be the only one awake. I went down to him and sat down.
"L."
"Elena I-"
I took his hand and smiled gently.
"It's alright. I'm sorry I was so hard on you. I know you have a hard time with humans."
He chuckled.
"Are you feeling alright?"
I squeezed his hand.
"I'm fine, mi amor."
"I'm sorry."
I raised my hand to his cheek.
"I know, and I forgive you. I'll always forgive you." I whispered.
He kissed the palm of my hand and then leaned into it.
"I love you. And you know I'd do anything for you, give you anything you want."
I leaned forward and pressed my forehead to his.
"I just want you. You and our baby."
He kissed my lips softly.
"You should go to bed. You need plenty of rest." He said.
I nodded and kissed him one more time.
"I'll have Watari bring you a good breakfast in the morning."
I hugged him tightly. He always took such good care of me, and everyday he told me he loved me. I was lucky to find a man like him, and I met him last place I ever thought to look. I'd always told myself I'd never marry or date a cop because the risks were too high. Now look at me. I was basically married and carrying the child of the man I loved. A detective who had shown his face for the first time during one of the most dangerous investigations in the world.
"We're both idiots." I said.
He looked confused and I smiled.
"Kira needs a face and a name to kill, sometimes just a face. You exposed your face. I promised myself I'd never marry a cop or fireman or anyone like that. And here I am, married to you and pregnant with your baby during the most dangerous investigation in the world. We're going to be parents. We're idiots."
He chuckled and I laughed softly.
"I suppose we are." His smile faded. "Do you think this makes me a bad father?"
"No! No of coursed not. Oh L, I already told you that you'll be a great father. So long as you don't let the kid eat only sweets like you."
"But sweets are essential!"
"And so are other foods."
"Mother knows best?"
"Exactly."
He smiled at me. I started leaving and he called to me.
"Where are you going?"
"I'm hungry."
"I'll have Watari bring you some food. You should rest."
I chuckled.
"L, I need a little exorcise. I'm alright, I promise. If something happens you'll be the first to know. I love you."
He smiled at me.
"I love you."
I went to the kitchen, ate a little snack, then went to bed.
When I woke up, there was a large bouquet of white roses. I smiled and sat up. I leaned forward and inhaled the sweet scent of my favorite flower.
"I love that man."
A soft knock came to my door.
"Mrs. Salazar. I have your breakfast."
I smiled and put on a robe. I let Watari in. Apart from my brother, Watari was the only one who knew of my marriage to L. He smiled kindly and I took a croissant off a plate.
"Watari-san-"
"Please, do call me Watari."
"Watari. Do you know anything about what happened to L's parents?"
He sat down across from me.
"Unfortunately I don't. I found him when he was four years old, wandering around. I took him to the orphanage. I have several of them around the world. I made sure his intelligent gifts did not go to waste. I love all the children who come through the orphanages, but L has always been very special to me. He's always been alone, only ever living for his work. Which is why I'm so very happy he's found you."
I smiled.
"I was a lot like him as well. My brother was the only other thing I cared about. Now, I can't imagine my life without L. I'm glad you found him all those years ago."
I looked at the roses and smiled even more.
"And I know he'll be a great father." I whispered.
I finished eating and got dressed before going downstairs. I saw Matsuda walking down the hallway with coffee. He looked a little depressed.
"Matsuda-san?"
He looked up.
"Oh, hi agent Salazar."
"Please don't tell me that's for Ryuzaki."
"Yeah."
I sighed in frustration and took it from him.
"Even if he doesn't say it or show it, you're a very important part of this team. Ryuzaki has a hard time with people. He doesn't know how to interact with them properly. Don't let him put you down."
He smiled a bit.
"Thanks."
I nodded. I had a bad feeling that Matsuda was the kind of man who wanted to prove himself. Depending on the situation it could be bad.
L's POV
Matsuda walked in with Elena, but she was the one carrying my coffee. I jumped up and ran over to get it, dragging Light with me.
"You shouldn't be bringing me coffee."
She arched her pierced brow.
"And neither should Matsuda. He's a detective, not a waiter." She said.
She walked past me and sat down in one of the empty chairs.
"You know you yanking on this chain is really starting to hurt my wrist, Ryuzaki."
I ignored Light-kun and went back to sit down. A few minutes later, Light-kun spoke up.
"I just found another one!"
I moved over and Elena looked up.
"General manager of a bank, Yotsuba's biggest competitor. On September seventh he slipped and fell on the front steps of his house and died instantly."
"That gives me a headache just thinking about it. My brother had a friend who's mother died from falling down the stairs." Said Elena.
"September seventh… it was a Friday, wasn't it?"
The chief came up looking at a sheet of paper he was holding.
"After going over this again, I noticed something."
Elena stood up and walked over to look at the paper.
"All the deaths the benefit Yotsuba are concentrated around the weekends."
"Weekends?"
"With the first few victims the time of death seems to be random. However the more recent ones take place between Friday night and Saturday afternoon."
"I'm amazed that you even noticed that chief!" said Matsuda.
I managed to keep from rolling my eyes.
"Matsuda, I thought I told you to stop calling me chief."
"Sorry, but you'll always be the chief to me."
Elena smiled softly at that comment.
I love your smile.
"This is a really important clue dad. Good work."
"Well you know I can't let myself fall behind you and Ryuzaki. After all the last thing I want is to be dead weight."
Elena chuckled.
"I think if anyone is dead weight around here its me."
"Your pregnant, not dead weight. Besides, all the information your contact gave us on Yotsuba had been a great help." I said quickly.
She winked and I smirked.
"Is Kira someone from Yotsuba? Or is Kira using Yotsuba? I haven't figured that out yet but will proceed under the assumption that this is Kira's doing. We will focus on Yotsuba."
Mogi came over, a very large stack of paper in his hands.
"This is all of Yotsuba's employee's."
I turned to him and pulled the papers towards me.
"Thank you very much."
He walked away again and Light-kun looked over.
"That's over three-thousand people! How did you put this together so quickly? That's amazing Mogi!"
"He's been incredibly efficient from the start."
Elena's POV
Mogi was indeed a hard worker. Matsuda stood up suddenly.
"Ryuzaki! Please tell me, is there anything I can do to help further the investigation? Besides the manager thing." He said.
"So, you really wanna be useful?"
I narrowed my eyes.
"Yes!"
"Then could you get me another cup of coffee?"
I curled my hand into a fist.
"And for our guests over there as well?"
I looked behind me and saw two people sitting on the sofa. I hadn't even heard them come in.
"Who're they?" Matsuda inquired.
"Hold on a sec, who let them in?" said Light.
"Those two are the newest members of the task force."
They both got up and walked forward.
"Name's Aiber. I'm a conman. How's it going?"
I smirked. I liked how honest he was about his job.
"I'm Wedy. A thief by trade."
I shook both their hands.
"A conman and a thief?" said the chief.
"That's right. Aiber is a lifelong conman. His social skills allow him to gain the trust of any target. We'll use him for infiltration. As for Wedy, she's a thief who specializes in cracking high end security systems. As proof of that she was able to enter the building without setting off a single alarm."
That was highly impressive!
"You expect us to work with criminals?" the chief asked in disbelief.
"Yes that is correct. However, these two have never once been caught. It's very unlikely they'll be killed by Kira. Think of them as professionals of the underworld." L said.
Chief looked at me.
"I have no problems with it. Sometimes you need contacts on the other side."
"Yes, I understand. To catch Kira we'll need the help from people like this. Let's all do our part and make this happen!" Light said.
You make me sick.
I was still very worried about Matsuda, and L wasn't exactly helping. I just hoped he wouldn't do something stupid to prove he could help.
