Lesser of Two Evil
After the first Potions lesson, Toshiro left with not only a newly earned vile of liquid luck, but also a very handy book full of notes left by its previous owner. Normally the short Captain would never condone defiling any book in such a way, but since the scribblings were more useful than the actual text he wouldn't complain.
The only problem he saw with using the book and becoming best in the class was that it had made Professor Slughorn even more interested in him. His need to 'collect', as Sirius put it, was obviously becoming a need rather than a want.
'I feel like I'm playing right into the Headmasters hands' Toshiro mentally sulked while eating his breakfast the next day.
'Well, at least you received a rather handy potion for it' Hyorinmaru said, hoping to raise his Master's spirits 'It may be banned to use it in the Wizarding world for anything important, but you can still use it for something important in Seireitei' he suggested, not bothering to mention using it in a fight since he knew his Master would never sink so low, and for their honour Hyorinmaru completely agreed with him. Taking a luck potion before a fight was practically saying you have no confidence or belief in your own power. Only cowardly weaklings would resort to such cheap tricks.
"You're so lucky, Toshiro" Terry Boot said from across the table before snorting at his own unintended joke "What are you going to use it for?"
"I am unsure" Toshiro frowned in thought as he pulled the small vile of Felix Felicis from his uniforms breast pocket to examine "it seems a waste to use it for just any old reason"
"I'd use it for days he had 'Hakuda' class" Padma groaned, still half asleep. She might think the Professor was fit, but along with everyone else who had the class yesterday was still feeling the burn of their over-used muscles. They were all hurting more today than after the actual lesson, with the exception of the small Captain of course.
"Why would I do that? I had the highest scores for Hakuda back at the Academy. The things Kurosaki is currently teaching are extremely basic compared to what they teach back home" Toshiro asked, honestly confused while everyone in the hearing distance gave him disbelieving and envious stares.
"Then what would you use it for?"
"Well, another student at the Academy is always making me do all her 'homework' so maybe next time I visit I shall take a small sip. Maybe it will make me lucky enough that she'll have actually done her own work for once" Toshiro suggested, taking a luck potion before dealing with Matsumoto seemed like the only worth-wild use for it 'If she doesn't do her paperwork, maybe it'll make me lucky enough not to find my entire squad completely hammered in the office'
'One can only hope' Hyorinmaru nodded.
"That's just a waste" Terry scoffed "Why not just tell her 'no' and let her fail? Teach her a lesson" he scolded, thinking back to when he was a first year and an older Slytherin had bullied him and his Housemates to do their homework for him. It was the same thing with most younger Ravenclaws and that was the reason they tended not to get too friendly with other Houses except for Hufflepuffs. Slytherins might bully or bribe, but Gryffindors used friendship to guilt-trip others.
That was why Terry and the rest of his dorm-mates continued to silently watch over the new transfer. The small Ravenclaw didn't know how things worked yet and his friendship with Weasley concerned them; they'd seen the ginger Gryffindor take advantage of Granger's friendship before and they didn't want the same thing to happen with Toshiro. Especially now they knew the same thing had happened back in Mahoutaru Academy.
"Unfortunately I can't. I was her tutor so if she fails it looks bad on me" Toshiro easily lied, not realizing the impact his words had on the other 6th years, or the sudden silent agreement between them to protect the adorably small transfer with a shared knowing look.
It was during Snape's first DADA class when the inevitable happened.
Non-verbal spell casting was childsplay in Toshiro's opinion so he spent most of the class staring into space, planning his next move in his mission to defeat Voldemort.
Much to Snape's annoyance, however, he couldn't rightly punish Toshiro for this since he still participated in the practical parts and wouldn't raise to any of the Professor's blatant attempts to make him angry and cause an outburst like he used to.
The short Captain was so bored he was almost happy to see the small head of green hair pop up from under his desk "Hi, Shiro-chan!"
"Bloody Hell!" Ron squawked beside him in surprise at the Hollow child's sudden appearance, catching the entire class's attention.
"Good morning, Lieutenant Oderschvank" Toshiro nodded calmly at the grinning child "What are you doing here?"
"Nel's Bored!" Nel pouted, resting her chin on the desk while inflating her chubby cheeks in a sulking manner.
"Ah…" Toshiro stated nervously in understanding, a bored Nel was never a good thing.
Thankfully(?), Professor Snape chose that moment for his displeasure at the interruption of his class to be known "Miss Oderschvank, why may I ask are you doing here?" he asked in a condescending tone, speaking to her as if she was a misbehaving student rather than the teaching assistant she was supposed to be. Not that she even noticed.
"Nel Bored!~" she whined loudly, oblivious not realizing that Severus hadn't understood her the first time.
"Hmph, surely you should be assisting Professor Kurosaki, not distracting my already useless students"
"Itsygo's still trying to make the weaklings stronger! Running's no fun, so Nel came to find Shiro-chan!" she shouted, giving the white-haired Captain a gape-toothed grin as if she expected a reward for finding him "Itsyg said Shiro would play with Nel!"
"Damn it, Kurosaki" Toshiro groaned.
"I am not letting Hr. Hitsugaya skip class just so he can…play…with you, Miss Oderschvank" Severus sneered, glaring down his nose at the girl.
"But Shiro looks bored too!" Nel declared much to the amusement of the other students watching the display. Ron especially was enjoying watching Snape argue with a tiny child, unable to mention that said child didn't seem intimidated or scared of the Professor in the least.
"Be that as it may, I will not allow Mr. Hitsugaya to leave early"
"You can't tell Shiro what to do. He's a-" Nel stated bluntly, like what she was saying was obvious, only to be cut-off by Toshiro quickly putting a hand over her mouth. He knew Nel was practically incapable of lying, so he wasn't about to let her tell everyone that he was a Captain, a much higher rank than a Professor. Not that any of the students not in-the-know would understand what that means or what he was the Captain of, but he couldn't let her mention it just encase even one of them believed her instead of just shrugging it off as a child's imagination.
"We will be going now" Toshiro decided before grabbing the back of the girl's white robe and carried her towards the classroom door.
"Where do you think you're going?" Snape growled in warning while the rest of the class stared in shock.
"To… play" Toshiro grimaced "Class is almost over and I have already completed all the work you assigned us"
"20 points from Ravenclaw for sass!" Severus barked in silent fury "I will take off even more and give you detention every Saturday for a month if you take one more step out the door, Hitsugaya!"
'Damn it, so much for blending-in' Toshiro scolded mentally as he glanced around at the faces of his classmates. He was going to be the talk of the entire school for this. But compared to the mayhem Nel would cause if he didn't distract her it wasn't much of a choice, he might as well continue down his chosen path.
"...I shall see you Saturday, Professor" Toshiro stated bluntly before turning and casually exiting the dead-silent classroom.
It was the lesser of two evils.
