Kana ended up staying the night at the Shoten after a very long night of talking, and questions, and answers, and then more questions. They had started talking around 10 at night, and it was half three when she was dropping into a futon in a spare room, barely taking the time to change into a yukata that was exactly her size Urahara 'happened' to have-and to set Arashi on the dresser. Even when she had been exhausted from the day, her mind was spinning with information.
"Ah. That would make sense. It would have to be one of the two." Urahara had said and Kana was this close to lashing out and choking him.
"Urahara...WHAT THE FUCK AM I!?" She had yelled. Yoruichi had attempted to help calm her by placing a supportive hand on her shoulder. Kana had been in no mood for any support or reassurance though, and had torn her arm away. She was tired of surprises and hidden aspects and unknown shit that caused some powerful asshole to want to steal a powerful artifact to become even more powerful, which would have been one thing, but considering her friends got involved she got involved and she hated not knowing why shit was happening. Everything that been stressing her out these past few weeks all came around back to this man. This one crazy blond asshole with an ugly striped bucket hat, amused grey eyes, and that fucking fan. Any time she tried to figure out anything at all from him he went from serious to cracking jokes, hiding his face behind it.
He couldn't hide any more when his fan sparked and burst into flame, causing him to drop it with a look of surprise all around. Kana sighed as she turned away from the small pile of ash, pressing a hand to her forehead. It was silent for a few moments before Kana got frustrated again, though she managed to keep calm enough to not yell. Or set anything on fire. If she did that hat was for sure the next to go.
"When I was a kid, my mother was always worried about my fighting. I loved fighting, and I never got seriously hurt so I never saw an issue with it. But every time I came home with bruised knuckles or a scrape or two my mother would panic. Instead of asking if I was alright though she would ask if anything weird happened and if the other kid was okay. I never understood why, but anytime I told her the other kid was okay or went home or ran off or whatever she was so relieved and I didn't get it. At one point I had enough of it so I started ignoring my mother. That got easier to do when she sent me overseas." Kana kept her eyes on the ground as she talked, not wanting to see any reaction Urahara or Yoruichi would have. She didn't want pity, she didn't want comfort, she just wanted answers.
"After I 'unlocked' my powers or whatever when we were training I got why she was so worried. She probably thought I would end up losing control and killing someone. Urahara, I need answers. If I don't know what I am or what I can do or what could happen, how am I supposed to protect the people around me from myself?" And more importantly, how was she supposed to become more powerful if she couldn't understand and control her powers? She finally looked up and met Urahara's gaze, frowning at the emotions flitting across his eyes before he nodded and turned to Yoruichi.
"Go get my sake. This is going to be a long conversation."
"Kana?"
Oh it was way too fucking early for people to be waking her up. She groaned and pulled her pillow in front of her to block the sunlight from burning her eyes behind her lids.
"Go away. I'm not doin' shit today." There was sweet silence for a second before the door opened.
"Not used to drinking, are ya?" She could hear the smirk in Yourichi's voice as she was blinded again by sunlight, hissing at the flash goddess holding her pillow hostage.
"No. Now get out, I need sleep." Kana swung her arm at the older woman but she only got a laugh in return.
"Come on, it's time for lunch. Tessai makes the best hangover cure, and you and Kisuke could really use it."
"Why aren't you hungover? You drank even more than we did."
"Oh please, I could drink twice that and still be fine. Now come on. After lunch we gotta get you assessed in the lab to see how much of your powers you have access to."
Kana had forgotten that. Urahara and Kana had waited in the living room for Yoruichi to bring down his sake, and it was only once everyone had a few drinks in them that the information was flowing, starting with the base of things.
Kana was a Godai. Or, at least, she was meant to be. Godai was a familiar concept to any Japanese native. The Godai being the five elements people had assigned to swordsmanship forever ago. The five elements being Earth, Water, Fire, Wind and Void.
Not lightning.
Because of course once she finally got answers she couldn't have the full answer.
"Come on, get changed. I'll save you a spot downstairs." Silence fell again as Yoruichi left and Kana stared at the ceiling for a few seconds longer before getting up and slipping out of the yukata. She paused in the middle of pulling her shihakusho on at the sight of her own body sitting in the corner of the room, still dressed in her school uniform from a full week ago. Though there was some clothing in a pile beside it.
"Oh, Takahashi-san, you look even better than I imagined in that outfit." Urahara chirped at her when she came downstairs, far too peppy for someone who was supposed to be just as hungover as she was. She did like the outfit though, some black combat boots, black skinny jeans, a black tank top, and a black leather jacket she had just in her arm for now. As much as she didn't like someone randomly giving her clothes, at least it wasn't something pink and frilly.
"Shut up. And thanks." Kana grumbled as she swiped at his hat, Urahara narrowly avoiding losing it as he leaned out of the way. Kana dropped to the spot in front of him, gladly taking the coffee Tessai offered her though she eyed the mysterious blue bubbling glass he set in front of her with a great deal of doubt. Her eyes moved back up to Urahara's eyes when a white fan tapped the glass and he winked at her.
"Go on. It really does do wonders." Kana narrowed her eyes at him before picking up the glass, quickly chugging it down before she could second guess herself. She set the glass on the table a little harder than she intended when the taste hit her and she threw back her coffee to get rid of it.
"You're dead." She growled once she got herself back together and Urahara just smiled.
"But you feel better."
"Fuck off." She really did, but the tears she had to wipe from her eyes made her wonder if it was really worth it. She still gave Tessai a polite smile as he set a bowl of udon in front of her.
"Once you're done eating we'll see if we can figure anything out in the lab. If not, it might be time you contacted your mother and see if she has any answers."
"I'd really rather not. Other than basic texts I haven't talked to my mother in forever, especially not since I got back to Japan."
"Then I'll try my best to figure you out." Kana froze mid bite to eye him warily. She didn't like the way he said that at all.
