A tall, lanky skeleton opened the door to his neat and organized room, and swiftly closed it. Today, was a rather confusing day, he'd have to admit. So many bombshells just kept hitting them at once, it seemed catching a breath of air was near impossible.
What's worse is that people were being affected deeply by this, The human disappeared, Lady Toriel was completely reclusive, Undyne was mad, Alphys was scared and the king was just sad. His brother seemed more on the curious side, however, for better or worse.
And then there's the frustrating thing, no one bothered to tell him anything! They just try to distract him with various work offers, like exercise and spaghetti, and he was happy people wish to try the Great Papyrus great cooking, but could they at least tell him what was going on!?
He wasn't weak, heck he could match Undyne in power! He could even use the skull attack that had that everyone so rattled! So why was no one telling him anything!
He wanted to help! And why couldn't anyone see that!? Did he make a mistake along the way!? Did he hurt someone!? Oh no! Such a tragedy! How could he, the Great Papyrus, have hurt someone!? This is awful-!
THUMP!
….That didn't sound like a very graceful landing, in fact, it came from his brother's room! He waltzed out the door, and rushed into his brother's room, expecting to see a distressed Sans…..all he got was a human who was clumsily trying to pick himself up.
"HUMAN! WHAT ON EARTH ARE YOU DOING IN HERE!?" He asked, the boy looked up at him, and he noticed how the boy looked very tired.
"Hey...I'm just trying to clear my head..." The human's voice was very quiet and hoarse, overall, it did not sound like he was okay. Papyrus promptly picked the boy up.
"WHY IN THIS ROOM!?" The human gave a tired sigh.
"I shoulda probably asked Sans first, huh?" A dry, humourless chuckle escaped his mouth. "I'm sorry, I'm just…..tired." The human was not okay, Papyrus could tell. Thankfully, he was an expert on making people okay!
"WELL FIRST, I INIST YOU SPEND THE NIGHT IN MY MUCH MORE, CLEAN, ORGANIZED AND GUEST SUITED ROOM!" The boy was far too tired to resist, so the skeleton carried him back to his magnificent room and plopped him down on the bed. The boy instantly slumped down, onto the pillow.
Papyrus looked into those eyes and frowned. There were noticeable bags under them, and the human looked so...distant. Papyrus sat down on his chair and wondered, why is the human like this? Was it...about being stuck in the underground like this?
Whoever left the message states that the boy is from another world, that means...was he ripped away from that world! His home and family, gone! With no clear way of going back! How awful!
"….What are those books about?" Papyrus looked at the direction the small human was pointing at, where a fine shelf of books sits, Papyrus waltz in front of it with pride evident in his step.
"THIS IS MY BOOK COLLECTION, CONTAINING PIECES OF CRITICAL KNOWLEDGE, SUCH AS 'ADVANCED PUZZLE CONSTRUCTION FOR CRITICAL MINDS'! OH, AND MY FAVORITE BEDTIME STORY, PEEK-A-BOO WITH FLUFFY BUNNY! (THE ENDING ALWAYS GETS ME.)" The boy seemed to perk up at the bedtime story part.
"Hey….do you mind answering a question for me…?" The reluctance could be sensed within his words, and naturally, The Great Papyrus must put his mind at ease.
"OF COURSE HUMAN, FEEL FREE TO ASK ANYTHING!" The boy looked down and shyly fidgeted with his fingers.
"Uh...what's it like...having a bedtime story read to you….?" The boy's face instantly flushed into a bright red after the question was asked, but Papyrus was to busy finding a viable answer to notice.
"WELL...IF I ACTUALLY STOP AND THINK ABOUT IT...THE MAIN FUN IS TO HEAR THE STORY BEING TOLD BY THE PERSON TELLING! IT MAKES THE THING MUCH MORE EXPRESSIVE, AND ENGAGING!" Papyrus looked at the boy, "WHY WERE YOU CURIOUS TO KNOW?"
The boy was getting flustered, Papyrus could tell. His face was a hybrid between a strawberry and tomato, and he seemed to curl up from embarrassment….it was rather cute to watch. "I...never had one told to me..." Despite how low and quiet his tone was, the words cloud not escape the Great Papyrus!
"WELL, THAT'S HORRIBLE, A TRAGEDY, A COMPLETE TRAGEDY! I MUST FIX THIS!" He gave a stare at the human. "HUMAN, TODAY SHALL BE THE DAY, THE GREAT PAPYRUS WILL ENLIGHTEN WITH YOUR FIRST ONE!"
"Wait! You don't have to! I was just asking!" The cries were deaf to the ears of the Great and Determined Papyrus, he grabbed his favourite storybook and sat down next to the bed. If he was honest….he didn't really know how to do this as well as Sans would.
His brother's voice seemed to adapt to every major and minor change in character, to sad to happy, to disappointed to pleased, it seemed like cannon fodder for his brother. A hardly fitting challenge. However...Papyrus wasn't that good at adapting, he had to admit. But the human's first bedtime story depended on it! So he must try!
While reading the book, he had to admit, reading it himself was fun….but not as fun as when Sans would read it to him, his brother's storytelling abilities were phenomenal, and his paled in comparison. ...But the human didn't seem to mind.
He followed the tale with interest and curiosity, slowly nodding off to sleep. He could tell he was invested with the tale, trying his best to keep focus, but eventually sleep one out, he collapsed on to the bed and shut his tired eyes. Quietly snoring.
Papyrus smiled and placed the book back on the shelf. A job well done, once again, by the Great Papyrus….
"So, what books do you have?" Shane asked as he looked at Papyrus reading a book regarding puzzles. When the duo awoke, they found the house strangely empty. Perhaps everyone went to do work? With a human such as Frisk around, it's best to be early.
"OH, YOU WANT TO SEE THEM?" Papyrus asked. The boy sheepishly rubbed his head.
"If you don't mind." He added hastily.
"OF COURSE NOT, IT WOULD BE NATURAL FOR SOMEONE TO WISH TO KNOW THE BOOKS SOMEONE AS INTELLIGENT AS ME WOULD READ." He replied striking a pose and then promptly emptying his shelf, and made two major piles of books, with one odd one left out.
"THIS IS MY PUZZLE BOOK PILE AND THIS MY STORYBOOK PILE!" He replied with gestures towards the large piles, "AND THIS…. I DON'T KNOW WHAT IT IS." A small book with the delta rune on it lay away from the other books.
Shane curiously grabbed the book and opened it. The words, 'Advanced Magic Technique And Spells' were written in bold, and inside the book were various spells and techniques. The first page was about psychokinesis and advanced blue magic.
It showed the user thrashing someone whose soul had a blue glow to them. "Blue magic is by far one of the most useful types of magic, it can be used to manipulate gravity to such extents that the blows themselves will start doing massive amounts of damage, without the need of bullets. This advanced manipulation is called psychokinesis, and can also be used by psychics." He read out loud. Papyrus' eyes sparkled with wonder.
"THIS IS A BOOK OF ADVANCED MAGIC!? NO WONDER SANS ALWAYS READS IT!" A look excitement was cast upon the boy. "WHAT ELSE DOES IT HAVE!?" He flipped into a random page.
"Weapon magic: Magic that manifests a large part of the user personality into a weapon. To use this magic, you have to attempt to manifest your magic as a physical object. Remember to not try to create a shape and to let the magic manifest on it's own." He read out. Papyrus let a small 'WOWIE'. The boy was flipping pages around, until he saw an odd wrist band on the page that had info about human mages.
Out of curiosity put it on, and a delta rune symbol suddenly flashed on it. Suddenly seven spectres appeared before them, all of them groaning, and some holding their heads. "That was...unpleasant." The light blue spectre groaned out, she had an elegant white and light blue gown, one akin to royalty.
"Let's CHECK our spells before casting them." The green one suggested, she wore green robes, more akin to a healer.
"How did THAT even happen!? The barrier spell was supposed to be incorruptible!" The yellow one said, he had armour akin to a knight, a very high ranking one.
"It honestly doesn't even surprise me that this happened, we may be stronger, but monsters are still masters at magic." The purple one said, the wearing purple robes with the delta rune on it.
"Ugh, this is Gaster's doing isn't it?" The one who wore a blue gown asked.
"I don't see anyone else who knows rune magic like that." Another knight scoffed.
"Where even are we?" The red knight asked, she had a very angry glare on her face.
"The better question is who even are you?" Shane asked as a retort, the ghosts suddenly stared at him and Papyrus with an expression of shock. Their entire beings froze up, and they stared with disbelief.
"Impossible..." The yellow knight breathed.
