Bakugo Expelled

Chapter fourteen: Vulcan brought to trial

Katsuki Bakugo was sitting at a table in the library of Vulcan High, the hero academy that he was enrolled in. The ashy-haired boy was mindlessly looking down at the page in his textbook that the book was open to. He was allowing his mind to wander, going on to thoughts of how things might be going at the hero academy that had expelled him, U.A. High School. The top hero academy in Japan had kicked him out, had deemed him as, in the words of Shouta Aizawa, 'a lost cause'. It may have taken place long ago by this point, but the pain of it all was still fresh, was still real.

And now Bakugo found himself as a student at Vulcan, a hero academy that had the gall to proclaim itself as U.A.'s single greatest rival. In its defense, Vulcan does have a hero course comparable to what U.A. offers, and it competes in more competitions against the other hero academies in Japan than any other, bringing home considerable accolades in that regard. In fact, Vulcan was the first hero academy to not only win out in a tournament against U.A., but that very victory was a brutal curb-stomp in favor of Vulcan.

They had done what many all over the nation considered impossible that day; mar the otherwise flawless record of Japan's top hero academy. And Vulcan had used the very student that U.A. had deemed a 'lost cause' when they did it.

At the time, Bakugo had been itching for any chance he could get his hands on to get some payback against U.A. for expelling him, for taking the side of an unrepentant pervert rather than his side. The explosive teen felt a swelling surge of amusement when he, along with two of his classmates at Vulcan, occupied all three spots on the award podium at that tournament where their school embarrassed U.A. by winning said tournament, which U.A. hosted, and on their own grounds. There was also some televised coverage of the tournament, so all of Japan knows what had happened that day.

Yes, Bakugo did indeed feel a lot better over U.A. expelling him when he made them regret the decision. But now…now Bakugo did not know quite what to think. After the tournament, a huge mess of events, one after the other, had taken place. Other smaller things had popped up that made the ashy-haired boy second guess his earlier pride in how he showed his former school up in front of the entire nation, but as things stood at the moment, one smaller thing was replaying itself over and over in Bakguo's mind.

His former homeroom teacher over at U.A., Shouta Aizawa, sincerely apologizing to him.

It was the underground hero who had seen to Bakugo's expulsion from U.A., had called Bakugo a 'lost cause' over the announcer's intercom system during the aforementioned tournament. The explosive teen had a particularly harsh dislike for the aloof assfuck and his holier-than-thou sense of judgment. …Emphasis on had. Bakugo, due to how Aizawa had apologized to him, had expressed relief to see him alive after the recent monster siege on the city, began to wonder if the man who prided himself on being 'rational' was acting in a manner irrational to a pro hero.

Shaking such thoughts from his mind, Bakugo brought himself back to reality and focused on his textbook that laid open in front of him. It was a history textbook that Bakugo could tell full well was below high school level difficulty; the academic courses at Vulcan were at a lower difficulty level than their counterparts at other Japanese hero academies due to Vulcan's increased focus on the hero course, as well as its constant competing in competitions and tournaments against the other Japanese hero academies.

It was as Bakugo was studying his textbook that he heard a group enter the library and come running up to him. Turning around, Bakugo saw Yuki Hojo, the son of Vulcan's principal, lead a group of other Vulcan students, among which were students that Bakugo recognized as Akuma and Sakaki. Once the group had made its way over to him, Bakugo gave the leader of the pack a wry, mildly confused look upon seeing Yuki's worried expression.

"…The hell crawled up your ass and died?" Bakugo asked indifferently, "You aren't being forced to do something that-"

"Bakugo, there is a very good chance that Vulcan High may be shut down by the Public Hero Safety Commission!" Yuki nearly exclaimed, cutting the explosive teen off mid-sentence and making him do a double-take.

Bakugo had no idea how to react, instead simply letting out a simple, "…Huh?"

Yuki took a few breaths to try to calm himself down. After he had finished, he looked to Bakugo and said, "Look, here's what happened. The Commission did an investigation into Vulcan at the behest of Ketsubutsu Academy, which is the hero academy that Loukar Raioh graduated from."

"Who?"

"He's the lead of the advisory panel in the Commission," Sakaki explained, a similarly worried look on her face as to what Yuki had, "Only the Commission president herself is ranked higher than him. Even so, Mr. Raioh has a lot of pull." Wincing a bit out of worry, the fat cat girl went on, "Enough to call for an investigation into Vulcan."

Bakugo got up from the chair he was sitting in and stood to look at his classmates at eye level. "So the president of the Commission's right-hand man called for an investigation into Vulcan. Big whoop. What reason does he even have to-"

"A Vulcan student greatly bullied Mr. Raioh's foster daughter, who was going to be enrolled into Ketsubutsu herself prior to the monster siege," Akuma said, "Ketsubutsu academy grounds had apparently suffered excessive damage during the siege, requiring students there to go to other hero academies in the meanwhile. Last I heard about it, Mr. Raioh's foster daughter might be enrolled over at U.A." The satanic hero-in-training gently shook his head. "…But that's getting off subject. The point here is that the investigation was launched on the grounds that Vulcan 'is a bully breeding ground', according to Mr. Raioh."

The ashy-haired boy gave a mildly annoyed scoff. "…So some overprotective dad decided to take the full weight of his position in the Commission and drop it right on top of Vulcan. Why is that any cause for-"

"Did you not hear us, you Pomeranian?" Yuki interrupted, clenching a shaking fist as he snarled at Bakugo, "There's a good chance at this point that the Commission will shut Vulcan down! They found enough evidence to prove both Mr. Raioh's accusation and of various other charges to support the decision! If it goes through, then every student here at Vulcan will be thrown out onto the street! We'll all have to try and find other hero academies to enroll in!"

Takeshi turn to look at Yuki, giving him a sympathetic look, before getting him to settle back down. The speed quirk boy then turned to look at Bakugo. "…It's not too bad, you know. If this school is shut down, the students who will be out of a hero academy will get to keep their hero costumes. Also, those who have provisional hero licenses will get to keep them, although if you have a provisional hero license then it will be suspended until you can get enrolled into another hero academy."

That set alarms off in Bakugo's head at last. The only reason he got his provisional hero license back after it was confiscated due to his expulsion from U.A. was because it was reinstated upon his enrollment into Vulcan. And now, if the hero academy that took him in does end up getting shut down by the commission, then his provisional hero license will be the equivalent of a junk common from a booster pack of some trading card game; worthless even though he still had it.

There's also the fact that, due to Bakugo's reputation that was shared with other hero academies by U.A., there's very little chance that the explosive teen will find enrollment in another hero academy if and after Vulcan is shut down. Some of Bakugo's previous anger at his former school was beginning to surface back up, as U.A. had told the other hero academies of Bakugo after he helped to utterly humiliate them in the tournament between them and Vulcan.

It was like Japan's top hero academy wanted to do everything in their power to deny Bakugo his dreams of becoming a pro hero.

The choice to Bakugo was clear. He gave Yuki a serious, no-nonsense look. "…You're the principal's baby boy, so you're probably going to want to lead things here among all of the students. Do you have a plan?"

Yuki let out a troubled sigh. "…I was planning on suggesting to mother that we find the student who bullied Mr. Raioh's foster daughter, do a thorough investigation to see what really happened that day he or she had supposedly bullied the girl, and proceed from there."

"Why not just throw the idiot under the bus as soon as we get his or her name?" the chinchilla girl asked, "We find out who they are and ask your mom to not only expel them but make as much of a show of it as she can in order to at least try to satiate Mr. Raioh's anger." Crossing her arms over her chest, the chinchilla girl said, "Trust me. When a dad is on the war path because his daughter was hurt, he's going to want vengeance and nothing will stop him."

The son of Vulcan's principal held a hand to his forehead as he let out a resigned sigh. "…Yeah, that may be out best option at this point. It's better to prune one dead branch off of an otherwise perfectly healthy bonsai than to just burn the whole damn thing in and of itself." Turning to look as Bakugo, Yuki gave him a wry look. "You want to join me and the others here to do a little bit of headhunting to avoid our own heads being hunted?"

Not wanting to be back to where he was between U.A. and Vulcan, the ashy-haired boy nodded rather eagerly a few times in the affirmative. Gathering his stuff up and throwing it all into his backpack, Bakugo joined Yuki's group and proceeded to follow them out of the library. They had a bully's sorry ass to track down and burn, so as to avoid having a similar fate befall the lot of them. Being out of a hero academy did not sit well with any of the Vulcan students.

Bakugo most of all.

It didn't take Yuki's group all that long to find the Vulcan student who had bullied the foster daughter of Mr. Raioh. The guilty party, a second-year boy named Hatataka Katataha, was reported right to Kagura Hojo, with Yuki personally giving said report to his mother. Kagura was glad to have a name for the person who could very well have doomed all of Vulcan High, but as much as she wanted to seize the bull by the horns in this case and expel Hatataka, she knew that any hasty action on her part may be further jeopardizing her school.

She would wait until after the trial, assuming Vulcan wasn't shut down. Then let enough time pass before expelling Hatataka for a fake and unrelated reason, so as to avoid further suspicion from the Commission.

It was seeming that the media storm that was being thrown up by the court room circus that was Vulcan potentially being shut down by the Commission was doing quite a good job at making everyone forget the bad-taste move made by a representative of the Commission at the recent funeral service for pro heroes who fell in the monster siege. Select persons in the Commission, including President Koharu Gunga herself, saw this and pushed it as far as they could, with the lady president personally offering whatever help she could to see to it that her chief advisor's foster daughter, a fifteen-year-old named Eunice Sirknight, gets justice.

As more and more things related to the trial were coming up, Bakugo was getting worried that things will end with Vulcan being shut down and himself out on his ass, with very little (if any at all) chance of finding another hero academy who will accept him as a student. The explosive teen, as all started to seem lost for him, saw that he had an unlikely visitor when he returned to his house one afternoon a few days before the trial that would decide Vulcan's fate. A visitor that at this point he had mixed feelings for.

Bakugo opened the front door of the house where he lived with his father Masaru. "Hey, dad!" Closing the door behind him after walking inside, Bakugo called out, "I'm back from-"

"Bakugo."

Hearing that familiar gruff male voice, Bakugo turned and saw Shouta Aizawa, his former homeroom teacher over at U.A., sitting on the sofa in the living room. In an armchair off to the side was Masaru, and seated next to Aizawa on the sofa was some man who looked to be about the same age as the underground hero that Bakugo did not recognize.

The man was slim and fair skinned, had long black hair similar to Aizawa but it wasn't anywhere near as unkempt-looking, a clean shaven face, and he wore a dark-bluish long-sleeved shirt under a yellow t-shirt that had black sleeves, a pair of baggy cargo shorts that was of a similar color to his long-sleeved shirt also the legs of the shorts ended a few inches past his knees, black socks that were long enough to disappear up into the legs of the shorts, and a pair of black shoes.

Focusing back on his former teacher, Bakugo's expression morphed into an unamused frowning snarl. "…What do you want, Aizawa?"

"Geez Shouta," the mystery man said as he turned to look at the homeroom teacher of U.A.'s class 1-A, "This is your former student that you had expelled, only for Vulcan to snatch him up right after the fact?"

"And who are you supposed to be?" Bakugo snarled at the mystery man.

A forced cough from Aizawa made his former student turn back to look at him. "If I were you, I would watch the attitude around my friend here." Gesturing to the mystery man, Aizawa said, "Bakugo, this is Loukar Raioh. He's the chief of the advisory panel in the Hero Public Safety Commission. As I'm certain you ought to be aware of by now, Loukar's the one who called for the investigation into Vulcan because of the actions of one of your schoolmates."

Letting out a sigh that was more annoyed than anything else, Bakugo said, "Geez, we found the asshole who bullied your daughter. How much do you want us to shine the silver platter that we serve him on when we present him to-"

"This is no longer about that." Bakugo stopped short when Loukar interrupted him, turned to look at the second-highest ranked member of the Commission. "Sure, the investigation that I had launched started out simply to look into rampant bullying in Vulcan's halls, but due to what all was uncovered during the investigation…" Loukar stopped short, gave a gentle shake of his head that clearly conveyed the extreme disappointment he was feeling. "…At this point, it is pretty much guaranteed that Vulcan will be shut down."

Bakugo had an angry, annoyed look on his face as he was told that the fate of the hero academy that he attended was set in stone. He wanted nothing more than to yell at Loukar, at Aizawa, for making his fate nothing more than a small office toy that they played with whenever the fancy struck them. To their credit, both men, as well as Masaru, saw the angry expression on the ashy-haired boy's face, and were all braced for a violently loud verbal tearing into.

However, none came. Bakugo's hostile expression dropped, replaced with one of bitter regret, one that made it clear that he had a feeling from the get-go that his hero academy was at this point grasping at straws. He then spoke up in a defeated tone, the subdued hint being a surprise to Aizawa especially. "So that's why you're here, huh Aizawa? You came to rub in my face the fact that I'm going to be out on my ass again." The explosive teen's eyes narrowed a bit, showed a slight return of the anger that had brewed up.

"…It wasn't enough for you to have me expelled, huh? You also saw to it that I was slandered to as many other hero high schools here in Japan as possible to lower the odds that any of them will want to take me in as a student. And now you're here to gloat, right to my face no less, that the one place that did want me after I was expelled is going to be shut down. I'm not going to get to achieve my dreams, and there isn't anything that I can do about it."

As quickly as it had returned, Bakugo's anger receded, returning him back to the defeated air that he had been giving off prior to his bitter accusation towards his former teacher. His defeated expression winced slightly as tears, the kind that a person who knows that they've been totally, helplessly defeated began to flow from Bakugo's eyes. "Since it's obvious that you very clearly want it so much, I'll just go ahead and say it. You w-"

"Bakugo."

The ashy-haired boy stopped short when he looked to Aizawa, who had called out to him. There was a somber, regretful look, one that had a bit of heartbreak mixed in, on his tired face. "It is never the intention of U.A. to make any potential and aspiring hero feel as we've clearly made you feel. I took no pleasure in the actions that I took that day, I assure you, and I have come to regret my decision." The underground hero saw Bakugo open his mouth, but he cut him off. "No, it has nothing to do with you helping Vulcan win the tournament against U.A."

Bakugo gave his former teacher a mildly confused look. "…I was actually going to ask if you still got your jollies out of slandering me to the other hero academies in Japan," Bakugo replied in a bitter tone, albeit one that held a hint of confusion.

"It was actually Nemuri who did that because she didn't like it at all how you helped Vulcan to utterly defeat U.A., but that's getting off subject," Aizawa clarified. What the underground hero did next took Bakugo completely by surprise; he got down on his hands and knees and lowered his head until his forehead touched the floor. The prostrated U.A. teacher was facing his former student as he humbled himself before him. "…Katsuki Bakugo, I am so terribly sorry for all that my hasty actions had put you through."

Bakugo had been stunned into silence by his former teacher humbling himself in such a fashion. He had no idea what to say. Seeing the silence on the ashy-haired boy's part, Loukar decided to speak up. "Aizawa and I came here to see you for something," the chief advisor began to explain, "Something important and serious." As Aizawa got up from the floor, Loukar said to Bakugo, "As we've explained, it's guaranteed that Vulcan is finished. Nothing that anyone can do for the place at this point will change things. If anything, the upcoming trial is a formality."

The chief advisor took a step towards Bakugo, gaining more of his attention. "This is where you come in. As a student at Vulcan, you can give testimony about what all goes on at your school. How the staff runs the place, what students are allowed to get away with, and whatever else may be used as further proof that Vulcan isn't up to the standard that the Commission expects out of this nation's hero academies."

"So what you're basically asking me to do is to sell out Vulcan High," Bakugo remarked, his tone accusatory, "The school that took me in after I was kicked out of my old one, and most likely at this point the only school that even wants me because fucking Midnight felt like trying to screw my future over." Bakugo turned his body to look at where his right had been facing, showing only his left side to Aizawa and Loukar. "…Heh. You guys do have a point on how Vulcan is totally screwed."

He raised his left hand, brought it to eye level as he pointed at Aizawa and Loukar. "…If I do agree to help you with this, can you at the very least put in a word for me when I try to apply for work somewhere after Vulcan gets shut down? There's no way any hero academy will want to take me since Midnight saw to that. Hell, she probably slandered me to the regular public high schools as well, just to cover her bases."

Both men were shocked by Bakugo's bargaining for them to cut him a deal, not of the action in and of itself, but of what the deal he wanted said, what the words implied. For all intents and purposes, Bakugo was seeing that his life was basically over, that all that he had left to give him some use in society was a job somewhere. Both Loukar and Aizawa were a little heartbroken to see how hopeless Bakugo saw his life now, and Aizawa fully intended to have a little talk with Nemuri when he next saw her at U.A.

"There's…also one more thing," Bakugo added, a hint of mild concern in his tone as he spoke, "Two of my classmates over at Vulcan, Sakaki and Akuma. If possible, can you guys try to recommend them to another hero academy after Vulcan gets shut down?" If there was one good thing about his time at Vulcan that the ashy-haired boy could say, it was that he had met Akuma and Sakaki over there. They were honestly the only others at Vulcan that Bakugo considered as friends; as such, he didn't want to see them suffer.

Aizawa and Loukar were further surprised by Bakugo, given that he was trying to save others even though he saw himself as not worth the same courtesy. "…I'll see to it that something is worked out for you, Bakugo," Loukar remarked, surprised by what exactly Bakugo was asking for, "And I will personally recommend your two friends that you mentioned to U.A. I'm sure that Aizawa will be willing to let Nezu know about it." Aizawa nodded once in the affirmative, showing he would be speaking to Principal Nezu of U.A. about the matter.

Bakugo lowered his arm, turned back to face the men. The explosive teen's expression still looked resigned and defeated, but a slight smirk formed on his lips. "…Well for starters, you can jot it down that Sakaki is constantly teased over how she's rather fat, even though her weight stems from her quirk and as such she can't do anything about it."

The day of the trial that would determine Vulcan's fate came, although said trial really was just a formality as there was simply too much confirmed evidence for Vulcan's doors to remain open to prospective heroes-in-training. At one point during the proceedings, Loukar gave a statement to list the testimony that Bakugo had supplied, although names were kept secret; it goes without saying that Bakugo was kept anonymous so as to avoid backlash from Vulcan.

When the inevitable sentence of permanent shut-down was given to Vulcan by the Commission, the school was allowed to take the rest of the week to get its affairs in order. Only adults were at the trial, but from what Bakugo heard from Yuki, his mother and a few other Vulcan High staff members were in tears as the hero academy they had given so many years to was shut down by the head of Japan's hero society.

It was of course natural that the staff of the hero academy that proclaimed itself as U.A.'s greatest rival would be in tears. But it wasn't just the school's staff that was upset; many of the students were also fearful for their respective futures. After all, the whole of Vulcan's student body were going to be thrown out on their asses. Although there were still a few days before Vulcan was shut down, many of its students were already applying to other hero academies.

A few were also applying to regular public high schools, as they felt that their odds of being accepted into another hero academy were slim. Some students of Vulcan, like Bakugo, felt that going right into the work force was the best option that they had; so many of them had applied for jobs that it had actually gotten a mention on the evening news that night as part of a story that went on about how Vulcan had been shut down by the Commission.

Bakugo felt a little guilty that he had technically helped to spell doom for the hero academy that took him in when he had been given the boot by U.A., effectively spitting in Principal Hojo's face. But then he grimly reminded himself that, even if he did not help Loukar and Aizawa, the self-proclaimed greatest rival of U.A. was doomed anyway. At this point, Bakugo figured that it was best for him to simply cut his losses.

At the very least, he was happy that he was able to work out a fighting chance for his only real friends from Vulcan.

"The shutdown of Vulcan has resulted in a flood of students hitting the streets in Japan," Nezu said at a meeting he was holding with other U.A. staff members in his office at the school, "Many of whom have sought out alternative paths to take their future in even before the verdict was passed by the Commission."

"To Vulcan's credit," Snipe remarked as he gestured to Nezu, "They did have quite a lot of competition wins before they were shut down. That may help the students who had been given the boot through no fault of their own find enrollment in other hero academies, or at the very least get into a regular public high school." The marksman pro hero leaned back in his seat at the meeting table. "Hell, due to how businesses discriminate against quirkless applicants regardless of the laws that forbid such practices, the students may find luck in getting work."

The members of U.A.'s staff that were at the meeting all nodded in agreement. It was quite a collection of staff members, too; Nezu and Snipe were there, as were Aizawa, Hizashi, Ishiyama, Toshinori, Nemuri, Ectoplasm; hell, even non-teachers on the staff such as Ryo, Chiyo, Lunch-Rush and Thirteen were there. There were, however, two empty chairs at the meeting table, with one being between Aizawa and Hizashi and the other on the far end next to Chiyo. Both empty chairs had simple red ribbon décor draped over them.

Nodding to Snipe, Nezu said, "Very true, Snipe. Very true." Turning to face the staff at the meeting as a whole, the quirked animal principal went on to say, "Although the way that Vulcan practiced as a hero academy left a lot to be desired, it's no reason to simply ignore the students that are suffering because of how their school went down. They are all prospective heroes. I'm certain that each and every one of them is a diamond in the rough that can be refined, polished to perfection if other hero academies were to give them a chance."

Aizawa stood up, getting the attention of the other staff members as he walked towards where Nezu sat; given how far away he sat from his boss, getting up was a bit necessary. Nezu saw as the underground hero approached him that he held a few vanilla folders. Aizawa sat the folders at Nezu's place at the meeting table, right in front of him. "…Funny that you mentioned how a chance ought to be shown to Vulcan's students, Nezu," Aizawa said as he made his way back to where he was sitting, "Those are files I was able to collect on a few students from Vulcan who I believe U.A. ought to enroll."

Aizawa sat back down in his seat, rested his elbows on his place at the meeting table, locking his fingers together as he rest his chin on his locked fingers. "…They're the only ones that caught my eye, though." The other staff members at the meeting leaned as close as they could to where Nezu sat. Toshinori, who sat immediately to Nezu's right, only had to lean slightly to his left to see how many folders Aizawa had handed over to Nezu. The former Symbol of Peace turned his attention over to Aizawa, arching a wry eyebrow at his co-worker.

"…Only three from Vulcan, Aizawa?"

"Keep in mind that Vulcan isn't the only hero academy that had been shut down," the underground hero began, "Isamu Academy High School was also shut down, and they were arguably more of a hot dumpster fire than Vulcan was. We may see a student or two from there. And then there's how Nezu had Hizashi, Nemuri and I go to the homes of specific quirked teens who he feels would make excellent students here."

Toshinori nodded in understanding, getting Aizawa's point. "Let's not forget the various changes that we've discussed that we're going to make here at U.A. in light of what happened during the monster siege," Toshinori went on, "Such as hiring new persons to the positions of class 1-B homeroom teacher and head of the Support Department, as well as increasing the size of the hero course classes from twenty to twenty-five."

"We're certainly going to be having our hands full over the next few days, that's for certain," Nezu said as he looked at the three vanilla folders that he was given by Aizawa. The principal of U.A. was intrigued by the three students from Vulcan that Aizawa was vouching for. They were all rather interesting choices. Rather interesting choices indeed.

END, CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Author's notes;

Yeah, Vulcan was never going to last here. Not with how Principal Hojo and some other staff members did things. Anyway, the next chapter will see the changes U.A. made in the main story adapted to the setting of this AU story. It will also see how the students of U.A., those from class 1-A and class 1-B in particular, are dealing with how they feel after the third memorial service from the previous chapter.

The next chapter will also see 1-A and 1-B adjust/react to the changes their school makes.
