Ruth watched as Rose walked out of the school with a little girl in her arms. She was absolutely beautiful. Sure, she had Jack's coloring, but she had Rose's features: large eyes, little nose, and beautiful smile.

Ruth got out of the car. Rose put Josie down. "Josie, this is your grandmother."

Josie wrapped her arms around Rose's leg; she was really shy. Rose was worried about Ruth thinking that Ruth would think that Josie was immature and act out. But she didn't. In fact, Josie's shyness only made Ruth's heart melt even more.

"Hello darling," said Ruth with a smile. She leaned down to the little girl, who was still glued to her mother. "I'm your grandmother."

"Hi," said Josie with a smile. "I'm Josie."

Rose lifted Josie into her arms. She kissed Josie's chubby cheek. "Let's go home, hmm?"

Josie was sitting in her carseat. "What's for dinner, Mommy?"

Rose smiled and looked back at her daughter. "Hmmmm… chocolate?"

Josie giggled. "No."

"Ice cream?"

Another giggle. "No."

"Candy?"

Josie giggled again. "Mommy, those aren't dinner foods!"

Rose smiled. "Daddy's making dinner tonight, I think."

Ruth turned to Rose. "Jack cooks?" Ruth never knew any husbands to cook.

Rose smiled and nodded. "Yes, he's a really good cook."

"Yeah he is," said Josie from the backseat, where she was playing with her doll. "I hope Daddy's making his yummy chicken."

"Me too, darling," said Rose.

She pulled into the driveway, and unbuckled Josie's seatbelt. Ruth stood up and the three of them walked toward the door. Rose opened the door and Josie ran inside. "Daddy!" she exclaimed, running and jumping into Jack's arms.

"Hi sweetheart," said Jack as he picked up his daughter. He gave her a kiss on the cheek, and Rose walked over and gave him a kiss.

"Mother, I'm sure you remember Jack," said Rose.

Ruth reached her hand out, and Jack shook it. "Nice to see you again, Ms. Dewitt Bukater."

"Please, call me Ruth." Rose took Josie upstairs for a nap. "I'm really sorry I tried to tear you and Rose apart."

"That's okay. Rose wants a relationship with you, and I want the best for Rose."

"I also wanted to say thank you. For taking care of Rose all these years. And when you had just met."

"It was my pleasure. I love your daughter very much."

Rose returned downstairs. She didn't look so good. "Jack can I talk to you for a second?"

"Sure, sweetheart." Rose took Jack's hand and led him out of the room.

"I really don't feel well. My stomach is cramping up, and I have a headache. And I feel like I weigh a million pounds."

Jack smiled. "You're pregnant. Some discomfort is normal, I'm sure. Just keep me posted on how you feel, okay?" He kissed her and put his hand against her belly.

Rose gave Jack a kiss. "Okay."

They went back into the kitchen, where Ruth was sitting, looking at Rose. "You're pregnant?"

Rose frowned. "You heard us talking?"

"Yes, I did," said Ruth. "I wasn't trying to eavesdrop. You were just talking pretty loudly. Besides, you're already showing a little."

Rose smiled. "That's okay. I suppose I was going to tell you eventually anyway."

"Dinner is ready," said Jack. Ruth walked over to the table, and Rose walked over to Jack and kissed him. She wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him.

Ruth looked at Jack and Rose. They seemed so happy together. Rose really loved Jack, she could tell. And he obviously loved her back. They seemed so perfect together; it was preposterous that she ever tried to convince her otherwise.

Josie pranced downstairs and sat across from her grandmother. Jack and Rose came over with the food, and began to serve.

"Josie, can I fix you up a plate?" Rose asked.

"Yes please," Josie smiled. She looked at Rose. "Are you feeding the baby, Mommy?"

Rose smiled at her daughter. "Yes, darling. I'm feeding the baby." She leaned over and kissed the top of her daughter's head.

Everyone ate their dinner, and Josie showed Ruth her dancing. She was actually getting quite good. Then, Jack took Josie up to bed while Rose talked to Ruth.

Rose looked at her mother. She hoped to finally get her seal of approval, but at this point, she didn't really need it. "Rose, she's beautiful. And you and Jack are perfect together," Ruth said with a smile.

"Thank you, Mother," said Rose happily. She was pleasantly surprised by this change in her mother's attitude.

"I mean it. It seems so ridiculous that I fought you being together. I regret taking so long to realize it."

"You know, Mother, I was thinking about finding you right before we bumped into each other. I wanted you to meet Josie."

Ruth smiled. "You did?"

"Yes. I was convinced it was just my stupid pregnancy hormones, but then I ran into you. And I'm glad I did."

Ruth smiled. "Thank you," she said. "Now fill me in. What has been happening with you?"

Rose sighed. "Well, after I saw you last, Jack and I got married, and we moved out here when I was pregnant with Josie, and we built this house, and that's it. I dealt with some problems getting pregnant this time around, but other than that, my life is perfect. I'm the happiest I could've ever imagined being."

"It's funny, the same thing happened to me. Getting pregnant with you was a piece of cake. Getting pregnant with Emma was a challenge. But at the same time, my pregnancy with you was pretty awful. I was sick the entire time."

Rose smiled. "Same thing happened to me when I was pregnant with Josie. I was on bedrest for months, totally sick."

"Like mother like daughter I guess," said Ruth.

"Tell me, Mother," said Rose. "Why is it that we can interact like this now, but couldn't when I was younger?"

Ruth sighed. "I think everything was just so much more tense. Your father's debt, your engagement. Now that you're happy with Jack, it's easier."

"I guess," said Rose. "So where are you and Cyrus living?"

"Philadelphia. But he had to come here for a business trip, so I decided to join him. In fact, I better be going."

"Oh, okay. I'll drive you back to the hotel."

"That's alright, just call me a cab."

Ruth was getting in the cab, but first she turned to Rose and gave her a hug. "Thank you for the second chance," she said.

Rose smiled. "Thank you for wanting it."
