Game Over

(Newspaper headlines published in Z...)

WAR IS OVER: ALICEA SURRENDERS!...

JOY TO THE WORLD!...

PEACE RESTORED AT LAST!...

ATOMIC BOMB REVOLUTIONIZES WAR AND FUTURE SCIENTIFIC ENDEAVOURS...

(under this specific headline, a picture of a huge mushroom crowd was displayed)

DISGRACED ALICEAN LEADERS SIGN PEACE TREATY...

VICTORY!...

Most of the pictures that decorated the front headline news were of pure jubilation. Carnivals were held on every street, and photographs captured the ecstasy of the people; people were dancing, kissing, throwing confetti, laughing from their soul, celebrating the victorious end to the Great War. Festivals were announced, national holidays were created, everyone (from glittering celebrities to humble farmers) held parties, went to parties, drank and toasted.

"Z can sleep easily once more," the papers read; a reassuring statement from the President. "The threat of evil has been vanquished."

The spirit of Z soared high up into the heavens: children were allowed back out into the streets and parks, and all the adults danced and drunk from dawn to dusk.

Soldiers were returning home; mothers wept tears of joy and fathers bought out their most expensive bottles of vintage wine. Those who lost their lives were hailed as heroes, and mothers and fathers held their fallen son's photos with absolute pride at memorials, where each lost sons were rewarded with medals of valour.

People were getting married! People were having babies without fear! Parties were endless! Alcohol was pouring!

Economists promised a financial post-war boom!

Alicea was occupied!

Good had overthrown evil! Tyranny was no more!

The whole country was flourishing beautifully, radiant and glorious as the sun.

And yet…

Across the borders in lonely Alicea, the air was so thick with shame and defeat.

Doors were shut, windows still barred. No one was out on the streets. Prisoners were being shot. Some prisoners were spared. Some ended their own lives. Some escaped.

The land was eerie. The land was silent.

No medals were awarded. Instead, all soldiers were broadcasted to be criminals. Those higher-up in command were deemed to be war criminals and arrested, due to be trialed in Alicea in the next coming months.

Mothers and fathers mourned for sons who had died for nothing.

The land was bleeding heavily.

Not even the leaders knew what to do anymore.

Alicea fell deeper into recession, and the blanket of thick depression hung over the whole country, unmoving.

The war was over. But it was truly game over for Alicea.

The winner, after all, takes all.
