Early the next morning, on the Bantu Wind tramp steamer, Indy and Marion were awake after having a small, quick breakfast. And while they were in their room that Captain Katanga provided for them, they started to remember Irma. Even though they don't know her name since Irma didn't really talk to them while in Cairo, they started to have second thoughts about her.
"I think I'm having second thoughts about that Nazi girl, Marion," Indy said.
"You are?" said Marion. "Why Indy, what happened?"
"Maybe I was wrong about her," said Indy.
"What was it you said about her?" asked Marion.
"Well, I don't think she's so bad," said Indy. "I mean she doesn't seem very devoted to the Nazis, does she? Remember when the shootout back in Nepal started and she was afraid?"
"Yes, I remember that," said Marion, remembering that night. "She hid behind the counter the whole time."
She then paused and said, "Is that why she didn't speak?"
"That could be a reason," said Indy.
"And I noticed she wears very thick glasses," said Marion, thinking for a moment. "Makes me wonder if she's related to Major Toht...I don't like to assume, but that's all I can think of."
"Who knows?" said Indy, shrugging. "If only we can see her again and talk to her about this..."
"Yeah..." said Marion.
"And if we do, she can tell us her story," said Indy.
"Right," said Marion.
About an hour later, in the U-boat, Major Toht has just woken up as he yawns and stretches. Though Irma, who was lying down next to him, was still asleep.
"Irma?" Major Toht said to his sister. "Irma, it's time to get up."
Irma was still sleeping.
"Maybe I should let her sleep..." said Major Toht, "She's been through a rough time…"
He then noticed that the Wurrfler wasn't moving. That's because the engines stopped.
"Zhe Vurrfler is not moving...?" he said to himself. "I better go see vhat is going on."
Major Toht slowly gets out of bed so he wouldn't wake up his sister. And to make sure she doesn't start whining again, Major Toht puts his hat in Irma's arms as he goes to get himself dressed in his Gestapo attire once again. And once he was fully dressed, he goes outside to see what was going on. He then finds out that the Wurrfler stopped the Bantu Wind as some of the Nazis raided the tramp steamer in order to get the Ark of the Covenant.
"Oh, zhat's why," said Major Toht.
He gasped and said, "Oh vait! We got zhe Ark back! I knew it vould finally get back into our possession! I knew it!"
Major Toht goes back inside and back into his and Irma's room.
"Irma!" said Major Toht. "Irma, we got zhe Ark of the Covenant back! Ve got-"
Irma was still sleeping while holding onto Major Toht's black fedora.
"Should I vake her up...?" Major Toht asked himself, then shaking his head and saying, "Nein, I should let her vake up on her own."
He slowly removes his fedora from Irma's arms and puts his hat back on his head as he said, "Now…Vhat to do in zhe meantime?"
Irma starts to whine again in her sleep.
"Oh my god…" said Major Toht, putting his hand on his face. "Not again…"
Major Toht sits on his bed and raises Irma up a little bit as he holds onto her once again. This makes Irma stop whining and is silent.
"Gosh, it's like a little kid not vanting to leave his or her parents…" said Major Toht, then sighing and said, "I guess I vill just wait here until she vakes up. Vonder how long it vill take…"
When Irma finally did wake up, she looks up as she sees her brother holding her.
"Guten morgen, Arnold..." she said.
"Guten morgen, Irma," Major Toht said back.
Irma noticed that she doesn't feel movement from the U-boat.
"Did ve stop...?" she asked.
"Ve did," Major Toht said.
"Warum?" Irma said.
"See for yourself," said Major Toht.
"Okay…" said Irma.
Irma climbs out of bed and puts her slippers on. But before she could head outside, since she forgot to put on her eyeglasses, she walks into the wall and falls over since she couldn't see where she was going.
"Oww…" Irma said, lying on the floor.
"Irma, again vith zhe eyeglasses?!" said Major Toht, rolling his eyes. "You're not wearing them!"
"Es tut uns leid, Arnold..." Irma said, getting back up and rubbing her head and face.
Major Toht picks up Irma's eyeglasses and puts them on the woman's face.
"Thank you very much..." said Irma.
Irma walks outside and looks. She sees that the Nazis stopped the Bantu Wind and now had their hands on the Ark of the Covenant again.
"Did ve just get zhe Ark back?" she said, getting amazed. "Ve did! Ve got it back! Oooh, I'm not going to lose my head after all!"
She steps onto the railing and shouted, "Guess what, our fine Führer?! You vill get your prize! Zhe lost Ark of the Covenant has been fo-"
Suddenly, she slipped.
"WHOA!" she cried.
Irma went over the railing off the U-boat and fell into the sea. But since the fall wasn't that far down, she didn't scream at all. And since she was able to swim, she stayed calm.
"Oh dear…" she said, keeping her head above the water. "Vhat did I do...? I should've been safer and not stepped up too high…"
Irma then says to herself, "Keep your hands and feet inside at all times!"
Back inside the U-boat, Major Toht heard a big splash as he was heading outside.
"Vhat the…?" he said.
He quickly runs over to the railing and looks down as he sees his little sister in the sea water.
"Irma!" said Major Toht, with a gasp. "My little sister!"
He jumps into the sea and swims over to his sister.
"I'm coming, Irma!" Major Toht said.
"Oh hi, Arnold," said Irma, noticing her brother next to her. "Vhat are you doing in the sea?"
"Saving you!" said Major Toht.
"Saving me?" said Irma, calmly. "Vhat? Arnold, I'm fi-"
"Get onto my back and don't let go!" Major Toht said.
"Okay Arnold..." said Irma.
She climbs onto her brother's back and holds on as her brother swims back to the U-boat and gets back on. Major Toht takes Irma inside and back into their room since his sister was soaking wet from the sea water.
"You alright, Irma?" Major Toht asked, wrapping a big towel around his sister.
"Yes Arnold, I am alright," said Irma. "Thank you…"
"You're velcome," said Major Toht. "But how did you fall off zhe U-boat and into the sea?"
"I slipped..." said Irma. "But it vas an accident!"
"It's okay, I forgive you," said Arnold.
Once Irma wasn't soaking wet anymore, she takes her pajamas and slippers off, dries herself off, and gets into her Nazi Schutzstaffel uniform once again. Once she was all dressed and did the finishing touches to her look, she started to stare into the bathroom mirror. She then became sad and upset as she looked at herself because Nazism was haunting her, as it was since a couple of years prior when the Nazis first took over Germany. And wearing her Schutzstaffel guard uniform wasn't helping her mental health either...
"I wish I vasn't living inside Nazism..." she said to herself. "But if I try to escape, they'll kill me! Come on, Irma, you need to stay quiet like you already were. Oooooh, I do not know if I can anymore!"
She sighed and said, "If only I can talk to Dr. Jones and Marion about zhis...I can't take zhis any longer!"
A few hours later, the U-boat arrives at Geheimhaven, which was a secret Nazi supply base located on a deserted island north of the Greek island of Crete. The Nazis were busy examining the Ark's contents before they planned to take it back to Berlin to present it to Hitler.
Where Major Toht and Irma were, they just got out of the Wurrfler and were walking with Colonel Dietrich, Gobler, and Dr. Belloq to make sure everything is going to plan. While walking, Irma saw the flag of Nazi Germany a few feet away from her. And because she was surrounded by her fellow Nazis, Irma knew she had to respect Nazism and everything about it. So she stopped walking, stood in place, and placed both arms on her side. As she looked up at the flag, she started singing "Horst-Wessel-Lied", which was the Nazi National Anthem. And of course, she sang it in the German language. She tried her best to not show fear, which was somewhat affecting her voice.
When she finished singing the song, she noticed that everyone at the Nazi base was staring at her since she started singing unexpectedly.
"Uhhh..." Irma said, slowly doing the Nazi salute. "Heil Hitler...?"
"Irma, vhat was zhat?" Major Toht said.
"I sang zhe song of Nazi Deutschland," she said, then sweats a bit. "Did I sound bad...?"
"Uhhh..." said Major Toht, then saying to Colonel Dietrich and Gobler, "Vhat did you think, Dietrich? Gobler?"
"Vell..." said Gobler. "Fräulein Irma sounded alright."
"Though I vill say zhat despite sounding not as good as usual," said Colonel Dietrich, "she still sang it vith plenty of pride. Just how our Führer likes it."
He turns to Irma and said to her, "Vell done, Soldatin."
"Thank you, Colonel. Gobler," said Irma. "Thank you very much."
Irma looks up and sees the wooden crate carrying the Ark being lifted as she said, "Vhat's in zhe Ark anyway? I vonder..."
"It is a radio transmitter," Dr. Belloq said to Irma. "So we can speak to God."
"A transmitter?" said Irma, in a confused voice. "Vhat?"
She turns to Major Toht and gently tugs on his long leather coat.
"Arnold?" said Irma, trying to get her brother's attention.
"Hmm?" said Major Toht, turning to Irma.
"Dr. Belloq says zhe Ark of the Covenant is actually a way to speak to God," said Irma. "Is zhat it?"
"Ja, I think so," said Major Toht.
"But there has to be more inside of it," said Irma, "but I don't know vhat. Hmmm…"
She thinks for a minute and said, "Do you think there are ghosts inside? Like spirits?"
Because Major Toht never quite believed in the supernatural, he started laughing. Irma suggesting something he doesn't believe in was not only nonsense to him, but was also funny to him.
"Arnold, vhat's so funny...?" Irma asked him.
"Spirits inside zhe Ark!" said Major Toht, laughing. "Zhat's very funny!"
"But there might be spirits inside, though!" said Irma.
"Nonsense!" said Major Toht. "It is all nonsense!"
"God has spirits, right?" said Irma. "Or does he...? I do not remember..."
"Do you not read the Bible, Irma?" Dr. Belloq said to Irma.
"I haven't in zhe last few years," said Irma. "I have been reading "Mein Kampf", which translates to "My Struggle" or "My Fight". It's mein Führer's book."
She whispers a little bit, "And it is Germany's best seller..."
"How many pages does it have?" asked Dr. Belloq.
"720," said Irma.
"Sacre bleu!" said Dr. Belloq, surprised at the number. "That many?!"
"Vhy yes," said Irma. "Zhat many…"
"How often do you read the book?" Dr. Belloq asked.
"Every single day..." said Irma.
Dr. Belloq looks at her as if she were crazy.
"Oh, I didn't choose to read it each day," said Irma, shaking her head.
She slightly looks at Major Toht and says, "My brother made zhat rule..."
Dr. Belloq looks at Major Toht.
"It is true, Dr. Belloq," said Major Toht. "My little sister is right. She and I read Hitler's book at least vonce a day."
"Speaking of the Führer..." Irma said, then gasps. "Vhat if the inside of zhe Ark is not vhat ve think it is?! Could it be not the real vone...?"
"You have a point there, Irma," said Dr. Belloq, thinking for a moment. "I have an idea."
He turns to Colonel Dietrich and said to him, "Colonel?"
"Yes Monsieur?" said Colonel Dietrich, turning back to the French man.
"Let me ask you something," said Dr. Belloq. "Would you be more comfortable opening the Ark in Berlin? For your Führer? Finding out only then, if the sacred pieces of this ancient artifact are inside of it? Knowing only then, whether you have accomplished your mission and obtained the one true Ark of the Covenant?"
"I am not comfortable with you planning to do zhis…Jewish ritual," said Colonel Dietrich. "Are you sure this is necessary?"
"Yes," said Dr. Belloq. "It is quite necessary."
"But vhat if zhe Ark is not vhat we thought it vas?" said Gobler.
"Yes, Hitler vill be very mad if we don't give him vhat he wants," said Major Toht, then shows Irma's drawing once again. "Remember zhis? My sister says if ve fail der Führer, this is vhat vill happen to all of us..."
"Major Toht, vould you stop showing us zhat?" said Colonel Dietrich, getting a bit annoyed. "Ve get it!"
He sighed and said, "Alright fine, we vill arrange an opening ceremony and test zhe Ark before bringing it back home."
He then paused and said, "Vait, who thought of zhis idea?"
"Actually Colonel, it was Irma's idea," said Dr. Belloq, then looking to his side. "Tell him, Irma, you thought of this."
He sees that Irma wasn't next to him. In fact, she wasn't even with the four men. Irma is gone once again, because in the middle of the conversation about the Ark, Irma ran off since she was getting way too stressed out. Though nobody heard her sneak off, they had no idea where she went.
"She's gone!" said Major Toht.
"Again?!" said Colonel Dietrich.
"How many times is she going to disappear on zhis mission?!" said Gobler.
"Seems that your sister dropped this when she left, Major Toht," Dr. Belloq said, picking up Irma's small purse.
"Her handbag?" said Major Toht, as Dr. Belloq hands him the purse.
"Vhat's inside it?" asked Gobler.
"I vill look," said Major Toht.
"You?" said Dr. Belloq.
"I am her brother," said Major Toht. "And I vork with the Gestapo, so I look through everything. I am loyal to my Führer..."
Major Toht opens Irma's little pocketbook and searches it. He finds her German-translated "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" book, her Nazi Germany passport, her Schutzstaffel ID card, her eyeglasses case, and a pen as well as a pencil.
"Everything seems to be in order," said Major Toht, then seeing something he never saw before. "Huh? Vhat's zhis?"
He pulls the item out of Irma's small purse.
"Toht, vhat is zhat?" asked Colonel Dietrich.
"Is zhat another book of her's, Toht?" said Gobler.
"Hmmm..." said Major Toht.
It was Irma's diary that she keeps in secret since it contains writing about her true beliefs. But nobody knew that she even has one…
"It's a diary!" said Major Toht. "It must belong to Irma!"
"Her vhat?" said Colonel Dietrich.
"Her diary!" said Major Toht.
"Did you know she had vone?" asked Gobler.
"Nein…" said Major Toht. "I had no idea…"
"Do you know what she wrote in it?" asked Dr. Belloq.
"No…" said Major Toht. "I do not…"
He then said, "But I'm going to find out!"
"Do you think it is right to invade your sister's privacy, Major Toht?" Dr. Belloq said.
"Only when she is not looking..." said Major Toht, as he looks at the diary. "Besides, I vant to make sure she is still pure..."
"But what if she-" said Dr. Belloq.
"I am a Gestapo agent, don't question me!" said Major Toht, as he opens the diary. "She might be hiding something zhat I do not know about..."
Since all of Irma's writing in the diary was entirely in German, Major Toht choose not to read it out loud, but instead to read it in his head since Dr. Belloq wouldn't be able to understand what was written since he only knows French and English.
"Well?" said Dr. Belloq. "What does it say?"
"It says she-" said Major Toht.
Colonel Dietrich, Gobler, and Dr. Belloq stood closer to the Gestapo agent since they wanted to know what Irma wrote.
"Okay, I see you are all interested in zhis," said Major Toht.
He starts over and read the words very closely. He finds out the truth on Irma's real beliefs, about trying to flee Germany and how she doesn't agree with how the Nazis thought of things. This sends Major Toht into a blood-boiling rage, seeing how his sister had lied to him and the other Nazis the entire time. The fact that Irma was planning to run away made Major Toht sad and heartbroken, but his anger about his sister going against Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party was in the way and got the best of him.
"MY SISTER IS A TRAITOR!" shouted Major Toht, all enraged. "DAS IST INAKZEPTABEL! ES IST EIN VERBRECHEN!"
"Major Toht, are you okay?" asked Dr. Belloq.
"SHE LIED TO ME!" said Major Toht, getting really mad. "AND ALL OF US!"
He then said, "I...VILL...END HER...!"
