Chapter 28
.
After his conversation with agent Fredo sheriff Duncan called some of his friends from the Druid Order. Specifically mayor Bowen and prosecutor Dabeck. He didn't invite John Larabee, but he was at the meeting, perhaps the mayor felt this concerned him.
.
Duncan: How is Samantha holding up?
John: She's under house arrest for the duration of her trial.
Duncan: I'm sorry I had to arrest her, but she shot a man in front of a fairly large crowd.
John: She thought that Michael raped and murdered her mistress.
Duncan: Didn't you tell her that Michael was under our protection?
John: Yes, but I couldn't tell her the reason.
Bowen: I'm sorry, but I didn't have authorization from the magistrate to reveal his secrets.
John: Samantha's actions were inexcusable, but I don't feel they were unforgivable.
Duncan: There's something else. Agent Fredo came back, showed me evidence that Samantha and Angel robbed a convenience store last October.
John: That's ridiculous. Why would either of them need to rob a store?
Duncan: According to Gary, they did it for a cheap thrill. That makes as much sense as anything. He showed me a video, the robber and the getaway driver both wore masks, but the video also shows the clerk being forced to print out two lottery tickets. The time stamp proves that they were the same tickets found in Angel and Samantha's respective bedrooms. How else did they get the exact same tickets?
John: I don't know. Perhaps I shouldn't say anything until I talk to our family attorney.
Duncan: I should warn you all, Gary Fredo isn't leaving until his investigation is complete.
Hayden: Didn't you persuade him that her death was a suicide?
Duncan: He isn't sure, and I doubt he'll be satisfied until he is sure, one way or another.
Bowen: And if that happens, how long before he learns too much about the Druid Order.
Duncan: I fear we're going to have to alert the magistrate, he's been taking orders from him for awhile, he just didn't know it yet. He retired when a different magistrate was in charge, but still.
Bowen: He might be the only one who can reason with agent Fredo. I'll call him.
