Shoto woke up a bit later than usual one morning and stumbled into the kitchen to find a note on the counter.

You told me long ago that you preferred coffee over tea in the morning, so I tried something different today~! My shift starts at nine, so I left it in the microwave so that it doesn't get too cold.

~ Momo

Shoto blinked several times, his groggy brain trying to process what was going on. Coffee had been banned in the UA dorms for… reasons… back in high school, so that combined with his friends' overwhelming preference for tea simply meant that Shoto had come to adapt to mornings without. But still, something seemed amiss about his girlfriend's note.

The microwave?

Did that mean she brewed it via microwave and left it in there after it was done? Did she use, y'know, the coffee maker, then microwave a wet towel to heat up the air, and then put the coffee into the microwave?

Just what happened here?

He opened the cupboard to find an unfamiliar bag of coffee beans sitting on the shelf. All right. This didn't seem to be going badly.

He checked the sink to find the teakettle sitting there, its little mesh leaf thing suspiciously dark. This was getting odd.

He looked in the trash can to find whole coffee beans sitting damp and dark at the bottom of the bag. Ah. There it was.

She tried making coffee the way one would make tea.

Well, it was nice of her to try at least, he thought as he plodded over to the microwave and popped open the door. He hadn't drunk coffee in forever, now that he thought about it, so maybe even if it turned out badly, his taste buds would be so blindly happy over the fact that it was a) made with love for him in mind and b) holyshitcoffeeeEEEEE that he could drink it without a problem.

He removed the mug from the microwave and just held it for a moment, basking in its pleasant warmth. Okay, so maybe the microwave heater thing wasn't such a bad idea. (He dozed off a little, just standing in a patch of warm sunlight with an equally warm drink in his hands.)

He took a tentative sip.

[Yaoyorozu]: Good morning! (•ω•`)o

[Yaoyorozu]: Did you enjoy the surprise? (≧ω≦)

[Shoto~**]: I've decided I like your tea better

author's note xxviii. i'm not a coffee person, so i googled what would happen if you boiled coffee beans, and you actually apparently get some people who swear by the stuff. i mean if you asked me it's all just shitty bean water. to be fair that might be tangentially disrespecting uncle iroh bc badly made tea is just boiled leaf water, but many writers before me have lampshaded the fact that some people crave the taste of dried leaves left in hot water for a while.

what "...reasons..." would UA have to ban coffee? *coughcough general education senpai studying for entrance exams coughcough*

anyway this was just a fun little thing that came to me when trying to fall asleep last night. thanks for reading, please review, and as always, have a greaaaaaat daaaayyyy~~~
