"A mountain cave on the outskirts of Ostia. Here, a sacred weapon lies waiting, the seal guarding it broken. However, to retrieve the weapon, one must pass a trial. A long, seemingly uncrossable distance... Eliwood must overcome the challenge with the help of his friends. Eliwood's true strength will soon be sorely tested." David said.

"...I never imagined there could be a place like this in Lycia…" Eliwood said.

"Long ago, in the depths of this cavern... When Lycia was a single country, an altar was built. One that houses the sacred weapon, Durandal." Athos said. "The weapons we wielded contained great strength. Power fearsome enough to cut down dragons... Today, the might in those remaining weapons is not what it once was. Yet they have been safeguarded to keep them from evil hands. This place... No one's stepped foot in here since Roland's death. Roland's presence still fills the air. All that reside here now are former soldiers who guard the sword. This is your trial, Eliwood. A few of you may enter, but only you can approach the altar. Go and prove that you have the strength to wield Durandal!"

They entered the caves where soldiers stood on guard all across the area.

"Black Fang?" Hope asked.

"No. The armor is different. They're more than likely guardians of this place." Sheer said.

"I see how this whole setup is. They're testing Eliwood to see if he is worthy of Durandal." David said.

"Proving that he is worthy is the only way their souls can be put to rest." Leonora said.

"Well...then only one thing to do. Support Eliwood and beat them down." Jexi said as they proceeded through the cave as standing at the end was a large armored man wielding an axe.

"…I am one of… Sir Roland's… warriors…Georg…You trespass here… I will…cut…you down…" the man muttered as he raised his axe up high.

Eliwood raised his sword as he parried Georg's strike. The two then combated each other in a duel, Eliwood having the weapon advantage. Georg went for a big swing, but then Eliwood dodged. Seeing his opening, he then laid into the guardian leader with a powerful slash.

"I will not let anything stand in my way. I WILL save Lycia from destruction!" Eliwood shouted.

"... ...I don't understand... You seem...familiar... ... Who... are...you...? ...You and...Sir Roland are as one…" Georg said before he faded away along with the soldiers.

"...You have stood your guard for so, so long. I'm sorry…" Eliwood said sheathing his sword.

"Now they can all rest in peace." Athos said. "Now...the time has come." he said as they approached the sword on the pedestal as Eliwood claimed it. "Durandal. The sword of sacred fire."

"Durandal….This is my first time seeing it but...it still feels familiar to me. I will use this to battle Nergal. Come! To the Dragon's Gate... What!? The sword... It's glowing... Watch out! Something's coming…" Eliwood warned before they saw a dragon flying above them.

"This presence… No, it can't be! That's Ninian!" David said.

"What? Ninian?" Nils said.

"That's correct." A voice said as Nergal appeared before them. "It appears she proved useless to me. So...I've come for her replacement." he said pointing to Nils.

"Ah, I'm finally starting to understand why you're after them now… It's because the Dragon's Gate can only be opened by someone of draconic blood." David said.

"That's correct. These two share blood from an ice dragon called Aenir. They are what I need in order to finally open it." Nergal said. "However, the gate proved too much for Ninian so I need Nils now."

"Nergal, you monster! Is this how you treat your own kin?!" David asked.

"Ah...so you figured that out too. That I used my own daughter to try and open the gate. I will do anything in order to obtain more knowledge!" Nergal said. "I am who I am. The pain of others, I do not feel. The sorrow of others does not touch me. Death feeds me. Death pleases me. I am the essence I consume. You fools will become corpses here, because I wish it to be." he said as he laughed.

"You are a fool, Nergal. In such a pursuit, you have forgotten what it meant to be human." David said. "And the time will come where I make you pay...for toying with their lives!"

"Heh. And you call me a fool." Nergal said as he vanished.

"Ninian… Eliwood, I know you don't like this, but… There's only one way we can stop her." David said. "I can hear her aura cry in anguish. She doesn't want to suffer like this anymore."

"Ninian...I hope you can forgive me." Eliwood said taking his sword and cutting down the large dragon before it reverted into Ninian.

"My lord…" Ninian said weakly. "I'm glad...you are not hurt." she said before lying there lifelessly.

"Damn you, Nergal… Even your own daughter? Is there anyone or anything that even matters to you anymore?" David asked.

"He's not going to get away with this." Jexi growled. "We're going...back to the Dread Isle."

"Yeah. I think we can all agree. This is gonna end… right now." Hope said.
