It was a few days later. Ruth and Rose still spoke, but Ruth was now back in Philadelphia. She promised Rose that she would visit.

Jack and Rose woke up at seven o'clock to get Josie ready for school. Rose started making breakfast and Jack made coffee. "It's seven thirty," said Rose. "Time to wake Josie."

Rose went upstairs to wake Josie. "Mommy, I don't feel well," said Josie.

"What's wrong?" Rose asked, and she felt Josie's forehead.

"My tummy hurts so badly, and I might throw up," said Josie.

"You do look really pale and… your head is warm," said Rose. "I'm going to take your temperature, okay?"

"Bring me a garbage please," said Josie. Rose ran into the bathroom and brought back a garbage, and Josie started throwing up.

"Josie!" Rose gasped. "Okay, you're staying home today."

Josie lay back down in bed, and Josie took her temperature. "Do I have a fever?"

"Yes, you do," said Rose, looking at the thermometer. "You're at 101 degrees. I'm going to get you antibiotics from downstairs."

Rose returned downstairs, where Jack was sipping his coffee. "Where's Josie?"

"She's sick," said Rose. "She told me she had a stomachache and then she started throwing up, and she has a fever."

"Geez," said Jack, rubbing his brow. "So I guess she's staying home today."

"Yeah," said Rose thoughtfully.

"What is it, sweetheart?" Jack asked.

"It's just… Josie never wants to skip school and dance. She never complains, ever. So she must be really sick, Jack."

"I'm sure she's fine, Rose. She probably just has the flu," said Jack, but he could tell Rose was still nervous. "Listen, Jena's a surgeon. If you want, you can call her over just to check on Josie."

Rose nodded. "I'm just worried about her."

Jack kissed her forehead. "I know, sweetheart. I am too. But like I said, I'm sure she's fine."

Jack and Rose both went upstairs. Josie had the chills and was shivering. "Josie, can you eat something? Some crackers or toast?" Jack asked.

"I'm not hungry," she said flatly.

"Please, sweetheart? I really think you should eat. Or at least drink a little flat soda," said Jack.

"I said I'm not hungry!" Josie yelled back.

Rose took Jack's hand and pulled him out of the room. "She just yelled at you. She never yells. Don't tell me she's fine."

Jack frowned and furrowed his eyebrows. "I agree, she's not fine."

"I'm calling Jena," said Rose, and she left the room.

"Hello?" Jena said.

"Jena, hi," said Rose. "I was wondering if you could come over. Josie's sick, and she's throwing up, and she has a fever. She's acting out and I'm really worried about her."

"Of course," said Jena. "I'll be right there."

Jena showed up fifteen minutes later. "She's upstairs," said Rose, as she led Jena upstairs.

"Josie, what's going on, kiddo?" Jena asked.

"I don't feel well," said Josie.

"Does your stomach hurt?" Jena asked, and Josie nodded. "Where?"

"It was near my belly button, but now it's more on this side," said Josie, and she pointed to the lower right part of her stomach.

Jena palpitated her stomach. "Here?" she asked, and Josie screamed. "Okay, sweetie, okay." She turned to Rose. "I need you to get me a phone."

"What is it?" Rose asked.

Jena sighed. "It's appendicitis. We need to get her to the hospital. She needs surgery." She dialed the number. "This is Dr. Jena Dawson. I need an ambulance."

Jack held Rose's hand, while Rose put on a fake smile for Josie. "It's going to be okay, darling," Rose reassured her. She kissed Josie's forehead.

Josie was put into an ambulance, and the paramedic told Jack and Rose that there was only room for one. "Go," Jack said. "I'll drive with Jena. Go!"

Rose climbed into the ambulance, and they left. Jack and Rose quickly drove to the hospital to meet them. Josie was in a room while the doctors got her ready for surgery. Josie clutched her belly in pain. "Mommy!"

Rose stroked her head and held her in her arms. "Shhhh, you're okay," she said comfortingly. "Everything's going to be fine."

"It hurts," Josie screamed.

"I know, sweetheart, I know," Jack held Josie's hand. Finally, she was wheeled off to surgery, and Jack and Rose were lead to the waiting room.

"Just wait here. I'll find you when we're done, okay?" Jena told them.

Jena left, and Rose put her head in her hands and cried. Jack put his arm around Rose's shoulder, and she cried into his chest. "Rose, she's going to be fine. I promise."

"I know, I'm just so scared. I haven't been paying enough attention to her because I've been so worried about the pregnancy."

"Rose, that's not true. You're amazing to her. You love her more than anything. She loves you, too. And in about two hours, she's going to come out of surgery and be absolutely fine. You'll see."

"Are you not worried?" Rose asked. "Because I am."

"Yes, of course I am," said Jack. "I'm crazy worried. I mean, our daughter woke up this morning with a stomach ache, and now she's in surgery."

"But she's going to be fine, Right?" Rose nervously smiled.

Jack kissed the top of her head. "Right."
