I do own my own characters - these are all characters that come from my own work, although I have altered names and occupations slightly so they fit into the real world! I also own The Legacy - unfortunately only on paper but I can dream! :D

Last of the short chapters... Longer one next time. Promise. ;) This one does end on a bit of a cliffhanger though! ;)

Chapter 30 - Imposter

Stoker was already running for the door. Freda winced as pain lanced through her shoulder.

"Stoker? Was that Limburger? What was that?!"

"I dunno... But it ain't good!"

Dragging herself up, Freda followed Stoker out to the hall. Vinnie leapt down the stairs skidding on the sharp turn to go through to the kitchen.

"Freda? You ok?" Throttle gasped as he took in the blood coating Freda's right shoulder.

"Spiffing..." Freda dragged a bow out from the kit she'd brought back from the U.K. Stringing it, she made her way through the kitchen.

"Sound off! Who's not dead?" Freda called as she surveyed the glass strewn surfaces.

"Most of us are ok... Barring a few scratches." Charley pushed her now dusty hair out of her eyes. "Thank God you have such a sturdy tables!"

"Hugh, Kai and Carbine were all outside..." Alec winced; sudden explosion was not the greatest way to sober up. "Stoker, went to find them..."

Loud shouts followed by laser fire sounded outside. Freda frowned and stalked toward the door.

"Er... Freda ma'am? You are not taking on Plutarkian thugs with that!" Modo caught her by the shoulder.

"My friends are out there, Modo." Freda glowered at the tall Martian. "Nothing's stopping me from going out there... Not even you."

Freda growled as she took in the devastation outside. A large portion of the Last Chance Garage had collapsed, the boundary wall was gone and her house was damaged. Here and there she could see parts of the Martian's prized bikes lying in the dirt. She didn't need Charley to tell her they were wrecked. Rounding the side of the house she came face to face with the instigator of the attack. Freda stuttered to a halt. Her chest felt like a knife had been run straight through it.

"Kai?!"

She sensed more than saw Throttle, Modo and Vinnie appear next to her.

"Oh Momma!" Modo gasped.

"Carbunkle must have brain-washed him..." Throttle muttered.

"No... This isn't Kai." Freda shook her head.

"Come on! I'm standing right here!" Kai laughed. A cold, hollow sound that chilled the mice to their core.

"No. You're not Kai." Freda was surer this time. The sound of running feet came from behind, headed in their direction.

"What do you mean?" Stoker skidded to a halt, Carbine, Primer, and Hugh beside him.

"That's not Kai." Freda grimaced. "I should have realised what was off sooner. None of the dogs or cats went near you! Thunder didn't know you – that's why he was so skittish when you went to mount up! All the signs were there, and I was too blind to see them!"

"Where's Kai!?" Hugh snarled his face contorted with anger.

"Some place you won't find him..." The stranger cackled. "Oh, don't worry. He's alive. Just barely."

"So Limburger planted a mole..." Freda rolled her eyes. "To do what exactly? Sabotage the Martian bikes? They'll get new ones. Cow-tow Charley and I into surrender over our land and homes? Never gonna happen. So what was the point of all this?"

Freda swept her hand out indicating the destruction.

"You got the wrong fish..." The stranger grinned. "See my boss wants to replace Limburger. You should be honoured – your deaths will secure his supremacy within the Plutakian council..."

"Napolean Brie?" Vinnie pulled a face. "When did that stink-fish leave Detroit?"

"Oh no, you mice have a whole new problem. The great and unfathomably powerful Lord Yarg! Except in his case, your problem will be short lived. Because you'll be dead."

"I'd like to see you try!" Stoker growled.

"To late..." The stranger with Kai's face levelled a gun straight at Freda.

"No!" Throttle yelled in anguish as the trigger was pulled. The laser bolt streaking toward them faster than he could move... He was too far away. A scream and a body hit the ground.
