Albus feels guilty. He feels guilty about breaching his privacy and going on Lorcan's phone in the first place. He feels guilty about finding the texts and copying down the guy's number and putting it into his phone. He's been feeling guilty for the last five minutes, trying to compose a text message to this guy.
But, honestly, he can't feel that guilty when his boyfriend of nearly two years is cheating on him with another guy.
Trying to swallow his inhibitions, Albus finally composes a text.
Hi, Scorpius. I think that my boyfriend is also your boyfriend. It looks like he's cheating on us both. This sucks. —Albus
Before he can lose the nerve, he sends it.
An hour of playing mobile games goes by before he finally gets a notification on his phone.
It's from YouTube.
Albus sighs and closes his phone. Maybe he did the wrong thing. He shouldn't have texted the guy. All he should've done was admit to Lorcan that he saw the texts by accident and ask him about it. There was probably a perfectly good explanation for the texts.
For his boyfriend texting a guy that's not Albus, but who has a heart by his name, and calling him things like "love" and "babe" and telling him how much he loves him and how much he misses him and how much he's excited to see him and —
Before he knows what he's doing, Albus is calling Lorcan. It takes five rings before he picks up, and before Lorcan can say anything, Albus blurts out, "I'm breaking up with you."
There's silence, and Albus can already feel tears springing to his eyes.
"I don't know who you are," the other line says, and Albus feels like he could swallow his tongue. The voice definitely isn't Lorcan's. "I think you have the wrong number."
"Lorcan?" he croaks out, his voice barely above a whisper.
"This is his phone, but not him," the other line responds. "He's in the bathroom, and his phone started ringing, and I wasn't going to answer it, but for some reason your name has a heart next to it."
Albus has a sinking feeling in his stomach. "Who is this?" he asks, but he thinks he already knows the answer.
"Scorpius Malfoy," he says. "I'm Lorcan's boyfriend."
Albus inhales sharply. "He's cheating on you. With me. And on me, with you. I texted you about —"
"My phone's broken," Scorpius says, cutting him off. His voice suddenly sounds all business. "I can't view any text messages. But look, he's coming back. Call me."
With that, the line goes dead. Albus' stomach churns.
…
A few hours later, Lorcan texts Albus and asks if he could come over. Albus ignores the text.
Instead, he calls Scorpius.
"Hello?" Scorpius says, picking up on the second ring.
"It's Albus," he says. This is absurd. Talking to his boyfriend's boyfriend. He really needs to break up with Lorcan.
"Oh," Scorpius says, and Albus pictures him nodding, even though he has no idea what he looks like. "The other woman," he says, his tone jaunty.
"I think that's you," Albus teases, and he's surprised that talking about it doesn't hurt as much as he thought it would. He thought that he wouldn't be able to joke about it, but for some reason joking with Scorpius makes it easy.
"We both are," Scorpius reasons, and Albus can handle that. "In any case, it doesn't matter. I broke up with him."
Albus is surprised to hear that, even with the fact that he was planning on doing the same thing.
"Good," Albus says. "I'm going to as soon as we hang up."
"Good," Scorpius parrots, and there's a silence between them.
"Do you want to maybe meet up for drinks or something?" Albus asks, the idea springing to his head. "We could exchange stories about our ex or… whatever."
"I'd love that," Scorpius says, and Albus can hear the smile in his voice.
