Chapter 31
.
Gary Fredo suspected that Samantha Larabee had been murdered to prevent her from telling too much about the Druid Order and it's ancient crimes. The autopsy would likely show it was a suicide, but the doctor had once been charged with falsifying documents. And he was now married to a deputy, and the Order could have threatened their child to force their cooperation. But Gary didn't confront sheriff Duncan just yet, without proof he'd just sound like a paranoid conspiracy theorist. He had to talk to a more impartial bystander. So Gary called his old friend Miguel Sanchez, explained all the information he had at the moment.
.
Gary: So what do you think Miguel, is their a conspiracy in Sanctuary?
Miguel: Doesn't sound like any kind of organized conspiracy. From what you've told me the twon is located near a prison, after their released these ex-cons have to live somewhere. Maybe some, like doctor Hayward and mayor Bowen, just wanted a fresh start in a place where people are unlikely to ask questions. Anyway, Carmen Flint's lawyer probably advised her to take the plea bargain. Otherwise she could have been charged with felony murder, that could have merited the death penalty.
Gary: Isn't it a bit of a stretch to charge her with felony murder when we don't even know if Angel committed suicide?
Miguel: Maybe. Maybe the prosecutor wasn't sure he could make the case so he offered the plea bargain. Maybe her lawyer isn't sure she'd be convicted, but doesn't want to take the chance with her client's life.
Gary: Do you think Samantha Larabee was murdered to prevent her from telling me about the Druid Order?
Miguel: Unlikely. She robbed a convenience store even though her family has more money than God. She shot a man in full view of maybe one hundred witnesses. Sounds like she already had self-destructive tendancies. I'd be more curious as to how the local police missed the gun, I mean if she was under house arrest they would have searched the house for any fire-arms right?
Gary: Yeah, that makes me suspicious too. Does the Bureua have any records of this Druid Order?
Miguel: No. I think they were in one of the old "Halloween" movies.
Gary: The slasher movies?
Miguel: Yeah, in one of them there was this group controlling Michael Myers and directing his murders. They seemed to be using a combination of dark magic and genetic cloning. Or maybe they were just dressing up in those robes for Halloween. It's been awhile since I saw it. Anyway her talk of the Druid Order sounds like paranoid delusions, I had more than a few of those when I was using. Any chance she was a heavy user?
Gary: Can't rule it out. You make some good points, maybe she was an addict who suffered paranoid delusions and self-destructive tendancies. Perhaps Angel did commit suicide, perhaps Carmen Flint got off fairly easy. But one thing we still don't know, someone had to have carved the pentagram into her body after she was already dead.
Miguel: Angel knew that her step-mother was once a satanist, she had to have told someone. And I'm not sure I'd put it past Samantha Larabee.
Gary: You make some very good points.
Miguel: I'm sorry I dragged you into this. You've already done more than your part, maybe it's time to come home.
Gary: Yeah, maybe.
