This is where the magic happens

This is where the magic lives

Our friendships weaved together, stronger

The bonds grow deeper, lasting longer

And the greatest spell you'll know

Is how the magic of friendships grows

How the Magic of Friendship grows

-The Magic of Friendships grows, from My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic

Changed for good

After the twins's birth, Keith and Allura took some downtime for the Empress to recharge and for the two to spend some quality time with their two newborns. While Ember kept herself busy by helping Coran and Shiro with the important diplomatic stuff, she couldn't help but sneak a peek at the twins in their new nursery. She wanted to spend as much time with them as possible but respected her parent's desire to have their own bonding time with her new siblings, plus they promised Ember she would get some personal one-on-one time with them soon so they could get to know her better.

The new mother was absolutely enamored with her children as was her husband. They sang the Rainbow lullaby every night and their children fell asleep in their arms. Eventually when Allura was well rested enough to return to her royal duties the paladins had to pry the children off of her just so she would leave the room. Keith was no better either, Lance at one time joked they would need to use a crowbar just to separate them.

Krolia was just as bad, if not worse. Once she was given some quality time with the twins she spoiled them to no end. They rarely cried around their grandmother, and she was already considering which type of weapons they would use in the future after getting a taste of their firm grips. Little Shira possessed her father's fast reflexes while Regris had his mother's ultra powerful grip.

Allura and Keith told Krolia the twins weren't allowed to have weapons until they were at least sixteen. Though Keith preferred eighteen because not even he would have trusted himself with a weapon at sixteen.

After a couple more weeks of hard work and meeting up with other members of the Voltron Coalition, the heroes took a step back to realize that their work was finished. The new home planet of the Alteans and Galra had grown into a prosperous civilization which would only grow in the years to come. According to Matt and Sam Holt's calculations it had been almost a year and a half since the paladins began the journey of healing the wounds left in the wake of the war. There was still much to be done but at this point Keith and Allura could tackle anything that came at them.

Which meant, Lance, Pidge and Hunk's work... was done.

The red paladin overlooked the ever growing city of the new planet by the castle ship's balcony. It was so strange to have the castle ship actually parked in one place for more than for a few days. He wondered if the old rust bucket would ever fly again. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad if it didn't. After all, the family currently residing in it had it pretty good here.

Coran joined Lance on the balcony, breathing in the fresh spring air. The juniperberries were in full bloom. It truly was like the old days of Altea. He knew nothing could ever bring back the home he had lost centuries ago but, for the first time in a long time, Coran felt that sense of peace and belonging he had been hoping for once the war was over. That he and Allura would eventually find a new place to call home and they did.

"It's beautiful, isn't it?" Coran said.

"Yeah. How does it feel to be home?"

Coran sighed, unable to find the right words. "I couldn't even begin to describe it. I didn't think it was possible, but you did it."

"We all did."

"So, are you excited to be going back to Earth?"

"Happy. Nervous. Sad."

"I know." Coran placed a hand on Lance's back. "When I first met you all I wasn't entirely sure if you'd survive your first mission."

Lance chuckled, "Can't say I blame you. We weren't exactly the best and brightest the universe had to offer."

"You heard that, didn't you?"

"Not as dumb as I look."

Coran laughed, "No, definitely not. But, after everything that has happened, and seeing just how much you have all grown, it makes me more proud than I ever thought possible. I don't just consider you lot my charges... I think of you as the children I was never fortunate to have... until now."

Lance's eyes stung and he hugged the Altean before he could see his tears. "Thank you...for taking care of us."

"It was a pleasure."

Romelle had just finished gathering the herbs from her garden. They were in season which meant she was going to be receiving twice as many customers in the coming days. It was going to be a busy time, just like the days when her family was still alive. Not a day went by that she didn't wish they could see the miracle that had happened. The Alteans were free, their deaths had been respectfully honored and now their people had a new home. Everything seemed to be going perfectly, and while Romelle was very much content with her new friends and career she still felt rather lonely at times. Sure, she had Xian who was great company, but this wasn't like before where everyone else ostracized her for her claims about Lotor, now her own people embraced her again and apologized numerous times for their behavior by supporting her new clinic and leaving gifts at her front door.

"Just finished picking the second batch, Ro." Comet said, placing the last basket next to the others. Sweet little Comet came by every now and again to help Romelle set up shop, and to learn more medical techniques from her. Romelle greatly enjoyed the young longma's company and it felt so fulfilling that she could pass down her knowledge onto him.

"Thank you, Comet." Romelle heard wingbeats flapping and heard a longma land before her. Judging by the sound of the wings they were much too big to be Comet's. "Sounds like your mother is here."

"Hey, Blondie." The older longma greeted, addressing the Altean by her nickname. Romelle had grown used to it, but she had a feeling Nebula insisted on calling her that because she knew how it bugged her. Romelle gave Nebula an affectionate pat on her forehead, the two had grown rather fond of one another, especially with her son learning under Romelle's wing. In a way it almost felt like having a mother again. Albeit, a nosy one with hooves.

"Hey, mom, hey Shiro." Comet greeted. The moment Romelle heard him utter the Earthling's name she started dusting her skirt and sleeves, hoping she didn't miss any leaves that got attached to her clothes while she worked.

"Is it dinner time already?"

"Lost track of time again?" Nebula laughed.

Comet blushed, "Sorry. The crops came in a lot earlier this time and I also offered to categorize Romelle's cabinets and—"

"Okay, honey, you can tell me all about it at dinner."

"Hey, Romelle." Shiro greeted and Romelle couldn't control herself. Every time Shiro came she found herself smiling against her will. Not that she minded. His voice always had a way of scaring away any gray cloud that was looming over her at the time.

"Hello, Shiro."

Shiro nodded to Nebula and she winked back. "Come on, honey. Let's grab us some grub." Nebula flew off with Comet, leaving Shiro with Romelle.

"I didn't expect your visit today." Romelle said.

"I know it's last minute but I wanted to show you something." Shiro said with a surprising amount of excitement in his tone.

"What is it?"

Shiro reached for her hand, which again made her heart stop and skip a couple extra beats, but then she noticed something off about his hand.

"Wait... your arm."

"Yeah. Pidge upgraded it. She used Altean titanium for the surface, a wrist communicator and the best part, it's got nerve transfers."

"Nerve transfers?"

"Yes." Shiro said excitedly, "I can feel things again! I can actually feel whatever I touch!"

"Oh my goodness!"

"I touched one of your thorn bushes and it actually hurt!"

"What? Shiro, that's crazy."

"I know!" Shiro laughed hysterically. Romelle laughed along with him, it was both kind of funny yet heartwarming to hear this grown man revert to an excitable child again.

"Shiro, that's wonderful. Not about the bush but about your arm."

"I know. I didn't think I could ever feel with this hand again."

Romelle rubbed her hands against the surface of his palm. It was smooth to the touch, the form was flawlessly cut like a polished gemstone with no sharp edges. She wondered if Shiro really could feel her hands in his.

"Can... can you feel that?" Romelle asked, trailing her fingers over his palm. His fingers curled around her hand, his thumb rubbing against her fingers. For a moment Romelle couldn't hear or smell anything other than Shiro. She could hear and smell all of him, she could hear the air going into his nostrils and out of his mouth, the rising and lowering of his broad chest and the smell of his clothes which were a mixture of the inside of the training deck and the freshly cut fruits she often handed him after a long day's work of helping her around the clinic, added with small traces of longma hair.

"Yes. I do." Shiro whispered close to her. She felt his breath against her cheeks, and just like that he pulled again, his breathing accelerated, as though he were becoming nervous all of a sudden. Even so, his hand didn't let go of hers.

"Um... Actually, there is something else I wanted to tell you."

"Yes?"

"You know that Lance, Pidge and Hunk are planning on returning to Earth soon."

Romelle's shoulders dropped. Shiro hated seeing her so upset. "Are you still going with them?"

"I don't know. I mean I can't exactly take you on a date if I'm millions of miles away, can I?"

Romelle's ears perked upwards and gasped. "Wait, did you—w-what?!" She heard Shiro laugh but she was still mentally processing what he just said. "Wait a tic, does this mean that you're..."

"I'm not going anywhere, Romelle." Shiro said, his human hand cupping her face, gently lifting her chin up to face him. "I'm staying."

"But... but Earth is your home. Won't you miss it?"

"Earth will always have a place in my heart, but my home isn't there anymore. My home is here, with my brother and sister-in-law. With my nieces and nephew, with Nebula and the kids... and... with you."

Romelle blushed and lowered her face, even though she couldn't see his face she couldn't even direct her clouded gaze to him. Her face was so hot she wondered if it changed color.

"Being a bit forward, aren't we?"

"Is that a 'no' on the date offer?"

"No! I mean, yes, I mean—Gah!" Romelle pushed Shiro with sheer brute force and nearly knocked the man down. He was twice her size and yet she had the strength to shove him back like it was nothing. Shiro was neither surprised nor upset, he laughed joyously. Romelle tried to hide her laughing but he knew she was happy at the news. All this time getting to know her, growing closer each and every day, his feelings for her grew more and more. He hadn't felt this way about anyone in his entire life, he didn't think he ever would, but here he was standing in front of the most incredible woman he had ever met.

"You're insufferable!"

"That wasn't a 'no'."

Romelle wished she could roll her eyes. She shook her head and hid her face in her hands. She felt Shiro's strong arms around her and she melted in his embrace as he rocked her softly, peppering her head with kisses. Romelle pressed her hands over his chest, his heart beating against her palm, and she felt his robotic arm on her face, gently lifting her up. She felt his face coming down to her and she partly opened her mouth until she felt his lips against hers. His hands caressed her cheek and he pulled her in close, their bodies flushed against one another and Romelle wrapped her arms around his neck. When the kiss ended she felt Shiro smiling against her cheek.

"Yes." She said breathlessly.

"Yes?"

"Yes, I would love to go on a date with you."

This had to be what Keith felt like when he kissed Allura for the first time. The feeling of walking on air, that the whole entire world had just disappeared and all he could see, touch and feel was the woman before him.

At long last, his journey was over. His pain was behind him. He could start fresh, with Romelle by his side. The new couple kissed once more while Nebula and Comet watched from afar, smiling and wiping a tear with her wing.

"You did good, soldier. You did good."

Kova purred against Lotor's thighs as he sat on the grassy field watching the children playing with one another. Both Altean and Galra. Lotor kept a respectable distance, not wanting to frighten them but unable to pull away from the scene. This was the childhood he could have had but never did, and though he could never get that time back he was grateful that these children would have the privilege he didn't. Two races coexisting just as his parents always hoped.

"Cute, aren't they?"

Lotor looked up to see Acxa standing before him. During the time they had been working alongside the Blades of Marmora Acxa's hair had started to grow a few inches. She still kept it relatively short but Lotor had noticed the change in length. Acxa also smiled a lot more than he was accustomed to, which was a lovely look on her now that she was no longer chained by her past. Lotor also took the liberty to upgrade his look a bit. He now wore his hair in a low ponytail, completely pulled back. No arched bang for him anymore.

His former general took a seat beside him. Kova sprung from Lotor's lap onto Acxa's, curling up against her stomach as she stroked his back. The feline purred with delight.

Lotor wrapped his arms around his legs as the children laughed. One Galra child fell down and looked as though he were about to cry. An Altean lifted him to his feet and inspected his injured elbow. It warmed Lotor's heart to the point of tears.

"It's more than I could have hoped for." Lotor said, smiling.

"It's because of you, you know." Acxa said.

"No. It's because of the paladins. They're the ones who made this possible."

"Yes, but you did rescue these Alteans. If not for you they would have been extinct."

"I harvested their bodies for quintessence." Lotor said, feeling disgusted by his past actions. He wished he never had to deal with that part of himself ever again.

"But before that you saved them to preserve their culture. Not everything you did was for the right reasons, but in some small ways you did some good. Like save me and my friends from living another day in that terrible prison. If you hadn't done that I don't think we'd even be alive by now."

"And I tried to shape you into someone just like me." Lotor hung his head in shame, then felt Acxa's hand on his shoulder.

"Lotor, when I first met you I didn't see a cold-hearted prince. I saw someone who believed in change. Who believed that there was strength in kindness. You lost that part of yourself through the years, we both did. But, one way or another, someone didn't give up on either of us. The paladins saw the good buried deep down inside of you even when you didn't see it yourself. I hate to say it but you were very close to losing it. Luckily they found you before that happened. I guess, what I'm really trying to say is that I'm happy we could start over, and with all the work you've done so far you've helped pave the way for this new generation. That's something to be proud of."

Lotor absorbed her words, processing them in his mind and heart. She was right, Lotor had been dangerously close to losing himself if he had gone down the dark path but it was through the paladins' love and support that he had broken free, and was able to make amends and right the wrongs he had done. Even with the wrongs he did, there were a few good things even if they were small.

It was just as the paladins said during their Monsters and Mana game; One small thing could make a very big difference. Lotor did preserve the Altean legacy before it was lost to time, he betrayed their trust and turned his back on his original plan for his own selfish desires, but now he was working to correct that wrong and he could see the fruit of his labor before him. He was proud. For the first time in his entire life, he had something he could be genuinely proud of without remorse.

He looked at Acxa, her eyes so filled with new life and promise. "Thank you, Acxa. Your friendship means a lot to me."

"It means a lot to me too. And, seeing as we're friends now, there is something I've been meaning to tell you." Acxa shyly pulled her bangs aside, her blue colored cheeks turning a bright shade of pink. Lotor felt a heat creep up from his neck to his face.

"O-oh. There is?"

"Yeah... could you please get a haircut? I swear, you look so much like the princess from the back!"

Lotor's jaw dropped. "I do not!"

"You kind of do."

"That is absurd!"

"Just ask Zethrid."

"Why do you listen to her?"

"She does have a point."

"Are you even serious, are you just messing with me? Acxa! Acxa, get back here!"

"You're going to have to keep up with me first!" Acxa shouted as she made a run for it, laughing like crazy as Lotor sprung up and went after her. How ironic, when they were young they were never allowed to be children. Now, as adults, they finally could.

The last time the castle was this full of energy was back on Arus when they invited the Arusians for a feast after their first defeat of the Galra. Much to everyone's delight, the Arusians were able to make the trip just in time to celebrate the paladins' victory over the Galra.

The castle was packed, and the Galra and Alteans held a festival just outside. Lanterns lit up the streets and friends and neighbors shared their meals and pastries with one another. In the grand ballroom the paladins happily greeted their old friends, even the grumpy aliens who never got to see the Voltron Show on account of they missed Clear Day. They did bring the Merakeet with them, however, which now became the race's new pets. Once they found the right music to calm them down these beasts made lovable and faithful companions.

Everyone came to pay their respects to the newborn royals. Zecora made the infants royal garments that combined both of their parent's cultures. Shira's face lit up when she saw new guests arriving, though Regris was a little more shy. He didn't cry but he certainly kept to himself.

Pidge was happy to see the Olkari again, and Lance found a way for the mermaids to join them as well. They came wearing water helmets which allowed them to breathe and special hover disks strapped to their backs so they could float on land. Pidge showed traces of envy when she met the mermaid Lance had developed a crush on while he was there, but Lance made it better by practically raving about his girlfriend to the mermaids. The aquatic humanoids were fascinated by Pidge's intellect and daring and she gained a few new fans to boot. Lance made it perfectly clear that the only girl he had eyes for was Pidge and no one else.

Hunk was ecstatic to be with Shay again, her and her family helped with the catering. Silver Star coaxed her mother and Kolivan to participate in the kitchen. Turns out, Kolivan had a knack for cooking. As for Shiro, he arrived arm-in-arm with his date, Romelle. The former Black Paladin never looked more dashing, with his hair combed, and royal attire which came in white, gold and shades of silver. Allura was generous enough to gift Romelle with a beautiful ball gown in pink, white and gold. The new couple lit up the room when they entered, and Lance looked just about ready to bounce off of the walls.

"Yes! Way to go, Shiro!" Lance cheered, thrusting his fist into the air.

Hunk wiped away a tear from his right eye. "Aww, he looks so happy."

"Gotta admit, they make a cute couple." Pidge said, raising her glass in honor of the two.

While the younger paladins hadn't made a big fuss over his growing crush on the blind Altean, aside from some slight teasing here and there, they all agreed not to go digging their noses on Shiro's personal business, knowing how private a person he and Romelle were. That didn't stop them from quietly rooting for Shiro on the sidelines. It did their hearts good seeing their Space-Dad happy. Out of all of them he deserved it.

Shiro noticed Keith and Allura from across the room. The young Emperor gave his brother a wink and a thumbs up, which Shiro returned. Allura smiled at Shiro, unable to contain her bubbling excitement. After everything Shiro had gone through he deserved everything he now had. A new home, a new position as a member of their royal court, and a possible future with someone who could care for him just as much as he would care for her.

Allura noticed Keith adjusting his cape and fixing his bangs for what seemed to be the seventh time that night when guests walked by. Normally Keith wouldn't care so much about appearances, but being the Emperor wasn't the same as being a paladin. Having messy hair was kind of a given when one was off fighting a war every day. Allura was flattered that he got all dressed up for her, though she could tell he felt very uneasy trying to be prim and proper all the time. Keith was a warrior at heart after all.

"Relax, your majesty. You look perfectly fine." Allura adjusted Keith's cape and collar one last time. They were both dressed in fine regal clothing, design wise they were a flawless blend of both their cultures. Keith's new armor was slim and form fitting without being too bulky and was red and black with gold trimming. Around his waist he wore the holder Allura had made for his knife while she still wore the locket Zecora gave Keith at the space mall.

"Enjoy it now, Empress." Keith said. "I'm stuck in this thing for at least three more hours."

"That's okay." Allura kissed her husband's cheek then ruffled his hair just enough for the right balance of neat and wild. "I prefer you in leather anyway."

"Ugh! Save it for after the party, Mom." Ember said, looking every bit a princess. She wore golden cuffs around her ankles and her princess circlet with her mane adorned with extravagant braids adorned with tiny Balmara crystals, and a star-shaped one around her neck.

"Besides, there are kids here." Ember arched her neck over the royal cribs and tickled her little brother and sister with her tail. The twins giggled, with Shira trying to grab Ember's tail.

"If we keep this up we're going to spoil those two beyond repair." Keith said.

"Trust me, I won't let that happen." Krolia said, hugging her son from behind. Coran tapped Allura's shoulder, clearing his throat.

"Empress, it's time."

"Thank you, Coran." Allura took Keith's hand in hers and the royal couple stood in the center of the staircase of the ballroom. All eyes fell upon them, with the paladins right by the end of the stairs. The smiles on their faces said it all. Though this would be their last evening together for an unspecified amount of time, the moments they shared, however big, small, happy or bad, they wouldn't change them for anything. This event was not a farewell but the start of a new chapter in their lives. Lance held Pidge close, her hand on his chest while Hunk stood side by side with Shay, and Shiro with Romelle on his arm. Keith was so happy when he heard Shiro would be staying, though he would have respected his decision if he chose to go back to Earth, knowing it was what he really wanted. But Keith was still happy his brother choose to stay. His brother was always there for him through the biggest milestones of his life and he will still be there.

Keith turned to his wife and his heart swelled with irrepressible joy. So much had changed since they stood there last, but one thing never did... Keith still loved Allura just as much as he did the day he first laid eyes on her. Through all the trials and tribulations their love was more than a thread, it was as strong as steel and as priceless as gold. There was no place he would rather be than right here, ruling by her side and raising their children together.

Keith nodded his head towards the crowd, giving Allura the floor. The empress was overwhelmed by all of the bright and happy faces before her. Races from all walks of life coming together for the first time in ages, all because of Voltron. And no, she wasn't simply referring to the giant robot. Voltron was what connected all of them, it brought her to her husband, and them to the paladins and the paladins to the lions. Today was a bittersweet day because it meant the final evening she would have with her ragtag team of friends, her brothers and sister, but she was happy all the same. She noticed Lotor and Honerva, the former witch never looked more beautiful.

"Ten thousand years ago the universe was thrown into chaos. In that time we lost many good people. People who changed us for better or for worse. But the greatest war was not simply between the Galra and everyone else, but it was also the war within our own hearts. Emperor Zarkon, who my father loved like his own brother, broke his trust and formed a rift between the paladins of old. There was a time when I saw the Galra as nothing more than irredeemable monsters. No offense."

Several Galra in the crowd raised their glasses and shouted, "None taken, Empress!"

"She's not wrong." Another said.

"Yeah, she's got that right." Another laughed.

"True words, right there."

Allura laughed as the Galra joked about their own mistakes, admitting to just how bad their reign was, but their joy did not come from their past but from the reality that they were free from their chains and were starting over with new friends. Many Galra had arrived accompanied by Alteans, either as friends or as a romantic partner. Allura was bombarded with nostalgia. This was the world she grew up in, the world she had lost and gained again.

"And while many of them had stayed enemies, a lot of them became our friends. Well, some more than just friends." Allura linked her arm with Keith's and he kissed her forehead, earning several 'Aww's from the audience. The twins giggled and moved around in Krolia and Coran's arms.

"What I'm trying to say is that things aren't always what they seem, and sometimes heroes can come to us in unexpected ways. I never imagined that a group of teenage pilots who argued left and right could ever become heroes of the universe."

Lance, Hunk and Pidge laughed, with Hunk slapping Lance in the back for good measure.

"Nor would I have believed that the son of my greatest enemy would become one of my best friends."

Lotor gave the Empress a gentle nod, thanking her for her words and for her friendship.

"Just the same, I learned that Voltron was not merely a weapon or just a symbol of freedom. Voltron is so much more than that. In the language of the White Lion it means Agape: Unconditional love. And it extends to so much more than just simple 'I love you's and gifts. It exceeds far beyond our own understanding. It was a gift to us even when we weren't always deserving of it. It wasn't always easy, a lot of times it was even painful, but it was worth the scars we now bear because they made us into who we are today. Those moments, good and bad, made our bond stronger than it ever was before. So, in honor of The Lions, in honor of Voltron, the paladins and I have finally chosen a name for our new home. From this day forward, we shall be forever known as...Planet Arielle!"

The entire ballroom erupted into loud applause and cheers. After months of simply calling their planet the home base of the Voltron collation the people, the citizens, finally had an official name for their home. It was the dawning of a new golden age for the universe, and it was all thanks to the paladins of Voltron.

"Arielle, huh?" Blaze said, nudging his wing against Lance's leg.

"Yeah, on Earth it means Lion of God." Pidge explained.

"Sounds perfect." Aura said, nuzzling against Pidge who wrapped her arms around her neck. Once the cheering dwindled down Keith spoke next.

"In honor of this momentous occasion, I would like to give my friend Kolivan a chance to say a few words." Keith nodded to the old Blade leader. Kolivan bowed in respect and shook Keith's hand in gratitude. The old Galra never looked happier. Though his face still bore many scars from his years of fighting in an unforgiving war, there was a newfound peace and belonging in his yellow eyes. When Kolivan stood before the crowd he almost lost his voice. He wasn't exactly the best when it came to heartfelt, emotional speeches, but the joyous atmosphere was enough to boost his confidence.

"Thank you. For decafebs The Blade of Marmora worked in the shadows, infiltrating Galra bases to gather intel in order to fight Emperor Zarkon from the inside. Now, while we no longer fight our own kind as we once did, we have come out of the shadows in order to help Emperor Keith and Empress Allura rebuild our once prosperous civilization. I have led the Blades in many missions and as a result we lost many good soldiers."

Acxa lowered her head in mourning for her father. She felt Ezor hug her from her left and Zethri wrapping her big muscular arm around the two. Lotor took Acxa's hand, smiling kindly.

"Though we no longer fight in the war our mission remains the same. To defend the helpless, and honor our noble Galra ancestors of the past. But, I'm afraid my time has come to step down as leader of the Blades."

Multiple Blade members gasped in horror and sadness. One of the Blades even fainted, prompting one of his friends to catch him. But, to their surprise, Kolivan smiled. "I have fought many battles alongside good men and women. But my days of fighting are over. I wish to spend the rest of my golden years with my family."

Kolivan smiled at Celeste and Silver Star in the crowd. Kolivan had been a loner for most of his life, pushing away luxuries like familiar bonds and close friendships. Now he had finally opened the gates of his heart and permitted others to enter. Celeste was more than his steed and partner, she was his friend, and little Silver Star was like the granddaughter he never had. He didn't regret his time as a Blade but he felt in his heart it was time to pass on the mantle.

"As for my replacement, it was a very difficult decision seeing as there are many qualified Blades."

"Can we get some water over here!" Said the Blade who caught his fainting friend.

"After much consideration I have no doubt that my new replacement will lead the Blades into a new era. Someone with a lot of strength, will, and heart. So, it is with utmost confidence that I recommend Acxa as the new leader of the Blades of Marmora."

"What?!" Acxa exclaimed. After Kolivan said her name it was as if her brain had blown a fuse. Ezor was already jumping up and down, doing back flips and dancing in place while Zethrid lifted Acxa off of her feet and nearly crushed the woman with her bear hug.

"Ha! Congrats, kid!"

"Congratulations, Acxa." Lotor said, smiling proudly. Acxa was breathing heavily when Zethrid released her.

"Me?! But—when—" Acxa composed herself and approached Kolivan, "Sir, with all due respect, I haven't been a Blade for that long."

"Do you have other reservations?"

"No, no, of course not! I just... why me?"

"While your time as a Blade may have been small compared to most, you have demonstrated impeccable leadership on missions, fierce determination, dedication to the cause, but most of all... with every life you help save you give them something even more priceless. You give them hope. Just like your father." Kolivan pulled out a blade from his pocket. "This was his. He would want you to have it. Whether you accept the position or not is your choice."

Acxa's trembling hands hovered over her father's blade. The knife's polished surface reflected her face and the stone necklace hanging around her neck. Her father held this blade, he fought for what was right and now his legacy was being passed down onto her, not only as a member of this organization, but as their leader. She was Lotor's head general for a reason, and the former prince himself made no secret of her leadership qualities, but those were times in which she used those skills to benefit someone else who made the wrong choices, now she had the chance to use her talents for people who needed something to believe in.

"You really believe I can do this?"

"I do. And so do your friends. Especially Lotor, who was one of the first to recommend you."

Acxa turned her head to see Lotor, blushing shyly at the mention of his name. He gave a cute awkward wave and Acxa couldn't stop the rising heat from her neck to her cheeks.

"We know you will make us all proud, Acxa." Allura said.

"What do you say?" Keith asked, nodding his head towards the blade.

Without a shred of doubt, Acxa grabbed the hilt of the blade and pointed it to the sky. The room once again erupted into applause and the Blades welcomed their new leader. Acxa held the blade close to her chest.

"This is for you, Daddy."

Overwhelmed with emotion Acxa hugged Kolivan, much to his surprise. Though he still wasn't the hugging type he returned the gesture. This girl was every bit her father's daughter. Acxa then bowed to the Emperor and Empress.

"Thank you. For everything."

Allura and Keith opened their arms, welcoming Acxa into them. Keith may not have been able to save Regris before, but he and Allura did manage to save his daughter and she would go on to save many more lives in the future.

For a split of a second Keith saw someone standing in the far corner of the room, his body was transparent yet luminescent. He smiled and waved before disappearing. Keith almost couldn't breathe because he knew whose spirit that was.

It was his old dear friend, saying hello and goodbye one last time.

(~)

After a bit more socializing, Keith decided to get some fresh air on the balcony. He watched as the people continued to dance and sing down below and when he looked up he saw the entire cosmos spread out before him. He noticed Shiro joining him. The two brothers stood there in tranquil silence until the eldest brother spoke.

"You know, I was thinking about when we first met."

"You mean when I broke into your car to steal money for food?" Keith said with a laugh.

"Well, sure, but I was also referring to when I got you enrolled at the Garrison. Did you know it was nearly a week before I heard you laugh for the first time? I guess there wasn't much to smile about, you know, after being bailed out by some old random guy who you thought was just taking you on as some kind of charity project."

Shiro wasn't wrong. Those were Keith's initial thoughts about Shiro when he bailed him out and used his position at the Garrison to get the young boy enrolled. To Keith, Shiro was just some old guy who thought he was doing this kid a favor but didn't see him as anything more than a troubled youth he thought he could change. Just a charity project, nothing more.

"But then I took you to the simulator and you just... did your thing. It was like you had been flying your entire life and you laughed so much I thought for sure Professor Iverson would give us both detention." Shiro laughed. It would have been in Iverson's character to also give Shiro detention, even though he wasn't technically a student there anymore.

Keith laughed at the memory. It was the first time he and Shiro actually had fun together, and the first time Keith started to feel more at ease by being around him. That maybe, just maybe, he could have finally made a friend.

"But that first laugh was so remarkable because I knew you meant it."

"What do you mean?" Keith asked.

"When you laughed you had this look in your eyes that, I don't know, it was like you were allowing me to see you, the real you, for the first time. That you could come to see me as your friend. You once told me that I changed your life when I took you in, but I kind of see it the other way around. You were the one who changed my life that day. Whether you knew it or not Keith, you always had a way of inspiring people. You inspired me every day. You inspire Allura, your team, your kids, everyone you've ever met. I know your father would be very proud of the man you've become."

The young Emperor chuckled to himself, maybe he was the real blind one instead of Romelle. He may have started out in the worst of circumstances, alone and frightened, but there were people around him that never gave up on him even when he was prepared to give up on himself. Keith was reminded of the Black Lion, how she told Keith to see himself through her eyes. In a way, the spirit of the Lions had always been with him, with all of them, guiding them in the right direction and towards each other. For the first time in his life, Keith had everything he could ever want. At long last, he was whole. They all were.

Keith didn't say a word, he just hugged Shiro and cried into his shoulder. "I love you, big brother."

"I love you too, little brother."

The two brothers ended the hug when they saw their respective Altean ladies standing by the doorframe. The moonlight made them look even more radiant than ever.

"You boys alright?" Allura asked.

Keith walked towards his wife and softly kissed her lips. "Never better."

Shiro extended his hand to Romelle, "Care to join me? It's a beautiful night out."

"I don't think I'm the best partner for stargazing." Romelle said.

"On the contrary." Shiro took her hand and led her to the balcony. He lifted her hand up and guided her finger to where the stars were to form the shapes. Keith and Allura watched as the two chatted about constellations and the couple returned inside.

"So that's where you learned how to sweep me off my feet." Allura said jokingly, nodding her head towards Shiro and Romelle. Keith laughed and pulled her in close, his arms snaked around her waist.

"As I recall you were the one who swept me off my feet. Literally."

The couple closed the small distance between them with their foreheads pressing against one another. The new empress sighed contently. After ten thousand years of being trapped in the astral plane and fighting in a war that felt it went on for even longer than needed, she could finally rest. She could finally enjoy the peace without the threat of the Galra looming over the back of her mind. She was free at last.

"So much has changed since then."

"I can think of one thing that hasn't." Keith said softly, caressing his wife's face, "I love you just as much now as the first time I laid eyes on you. You're still the best thing that has ever happened to me."

Allura's tear filled eyes sparkled in the light of the ballroom, but her face conveyed nothing but pure happiness. "I feel the same way, my love. There is nothing in this or any reality that could ever change that."

"I love you, Allura."

"I love you, Keith. Forever."

The sound of babies giggling caught the couple's attention. Coran and Krolia came in carrying their children, who were acting fussy. The pair held their children in their arms, Shira in Keith's and little Regris in Allura's. The infants calmed right down.

"Excuse me, can I have your attention please!" Lance stood in the middle of the staircase, with Hunk and Pidge on his right and left respectively. "Thank you, thank you, you're a beautiful audience by the way. As I'm sure a lot of you are aware that we, the paladins of Voltron, had once done a galaxy wide tour of The Voltron Show! One of our highest achievements, if I do say so myself. Though our official performing days are over we wanted to do one final show before we have to..." Lance swallowed a hard lump before speaking, "Part ways for now."

Keith and Allura were confused because they never planned for this. Clearly, this was all Lance's doing but rather than be concerned the couple waited patiently for what the former red Paladin had planned.

"A lot has changed since the five of us first arrived here in this Castle Ship. I think I speak for all of us when I say there aren't enough words to express how we feel. So, we'll let our Heart Song do it for us."

Zecora laughed at the call back to her potion. It was both clever as well as heartfelt. Hunk nodded to Silver Star who dimmed the lights and a soft light shone on Lance, Hunk and Pidge while a group of Galra, Alteans and Arusians played a soothing melody.

(Changed for good, from Wicked)

Lance: I've heard it said

That people come into our lives

For a reason

Bringing something we must learn

Pidge: And we are lead

To those who help us most to grow

If we let them

And we help them in return

Hunk: There are those who may not believe it's true

But I know I'm who I am today

Because I knew you

Shiro and Romelle rushed inside when they heard the singing. Xian landed on Romelle's shoulder while the mice settled on Shiro's. Kosmo nuzzled against Krolia's leg and Ember stood by her parents and younger siblings.

Lance: Like a comet pulled from orbit

As it passes the sun

Hunk: Like a stream that meets a boulder

Halfway through the wood

Pidge: Now I can say that I've been changed for the better

Because I knew you

Hunk: Because I knew you

Together: I have been changed

For good

Though this was their song for them, Keith, Allura and Shiro too felt the melody in their hearts. The music they shared was still present, with or without the potion. Keith surprised the group by singing along to the song.

Keith: It well may be, that things will never be the same

As they used to

But even so, I'm proud to say

So much of me

Is made of what I learned from you

You'll be with me

Like a handprint on my heart

Lance walked down the staircase until he was face to face with Keith.

Lance: And no matter where our stories end

You know you have rewritten mine

By being my friend

Keith and Lance: Like a ship blown from its mourning

Like a wind off the sea

Allura and Pidge: Like a seed dropped by a sky bird

In a distant wood

Keith, Allura, Lance, Pidge: Now I can say that I've been changed for the better

Allura: Because I knew you

Pidge: Because I knew you

Pidge and Allura: I have been changed

For good

Not too surprising, Lotor found the music luring him to sing from his heart as well

Lotor: And just to clear the air, I ask forgiveness

For the things I've done you blame me for

Acxa: But then I guess we know there's blame to share

Everyone: And none of it seems to matter anymore

The heroes, each and every one, stood in the center of the ballroom, with all of the guests gathered around them as holographic lights danced above their heads. The longma children joined in as well, singing beside their respective paladins, who inspired them to be brave in the face of adversity.

Heroes: Like a comet pulled from orbit

Longmas: (Like a ship blown from its mooring)

Heroes: As it passes the sun

Longmas: (By a wind off the sea)

Heroes: Like a stream that meets a boulder

Longmas: (Like a seed dropped by a bird)

Heroes: Halfway through the wood

Longmas: (In the wood)

Everyone: Now I can say

That I've been changed for the better

I do believe I have been changed for the better

Keith:Because I knew you

Allura:Because I knew you

Paladins:Because I knew you

I have been changed

For good

When the song was over and the lights came back on there was not a single dry eye to be found. Everyone was either hugging, or kissing or both, celebrating this new era of peace as well as celebrating the many friends and found family members which came from their many adventures together.

The paladins and their friends all huddled together in a great big hug. This might have been their last night together, but even so no matter how far they would be, no matter where life took them, the impact they had in each other's lives would live on forever.

The twins were all snuggled up in their shared crib. Whenever they were placed in separate beds the twins would wail until they were brought back together. It seemed the two were already attached at the hip, which would be very interesting once they hit their teen years.

Keith and Allura slept soundly in their royal bed chambers, with Kosmo snoring softly at the foot of their bed. The wolf's ears perked up and he started howling. Keith was the first to wake up, rubbing his sleepy eyes.

"Ugh. Kosmo, what's wrong?" Keith asked, sluggishly sitting upright.

Oh-oh-oh-oh...

Keith gasped, his senses all waking up at once leaving no room for exhaustion. Allura too gasped, sitting upright in equal awareness.

"Did you...?"

Oh-oh-oh-oh...

"Yep." Keith nodded. Kosmo sniffed the air and howled once more. Allura soothed the anxious wolf down by stroking his fur. She didn't want him to wake up the twins. The Empress opened her window, listening closely for the sound again.

Oh-oh-oh-oh...

There it was again. The sound seemed to be growing stronger and stronger, calling out to them. "Kosmo, you and the mice keep an eye on the twins." Keith said, "Wake up Coran and Mom if anything happens."

The couple, while still in their nightwear followed the sound all through the castle. Unbeknownst to them Krolia and Coran also heard the noise. Coran, tangled in his blanket, fell flat on his face. He was half tempted to just go back to sleep but the noise was persistent. He pulled himself back up and followed the sound.

In her room Ember heard the same harmonizing melody. She jumped out of her bed, looking to find if it was her mother calling to her. She followed the sound all the way to the castle gardens. The garden was Keith's gift to Allura during the early stages of rebuilding their new home on the planet. A garden with trimmed hedges, sparkling fountains with statues styled to look like the lions, white benches for one to sit on and a gazebo with floral vines wrapped around the pillars. The centerpiece was a marble statue of King Alfor and his wife Queen Melenor.

Keith and Allura followed the sound to the gazebo. They heard the sound of panting and turned to find Coran, hands on his knees and catching his breath.

"Coran? What are you doing out here?"

"Give me—give me a moment to—catch my breath. Phew! These bones aren't what they used to be."

"Coran, what are you doing here?" Krolia asked once she caught up to them.

"Mom?"

"Grandma?" Ember then appeared.

"Ember, what are you doing up?" Keith said, sounding every bit the father he was.

"I heard this voice and I thought Mom was calling."

"That wasn't me." Allura said.

"Okay, what is going on here?" Krolia said, already growing impatient. Right then and there, a trail of sparkling dust appeared, spinning around their bodies like fireflies before forming together into a bright floating star. Allura cautiously reached out her hand, her finger barely brushing the surface of the star, until it burst. Four humanoid shapes appeared, followed by the shape of a creature on four legs.

The dust faded away and the mysterious forms solidified before them. Allura's eyes welled with tears for the people standing before them were King Alfor, Queen Melenor, Steve Kogane, Regris and an adult female longma Keith and Allura remembered seeing once before. Once was enough to permanently engrave the image into their brains forever.

Everyone was too stunned to speak and who could blame them? They were seeing the deceased standing before them, how was one supposed to react? Queen Melenor stepped out of the gazebo, her eyes locked on Allura's. She reached out her hand and caressed her daughter's cheek. Her hand didn't phase through her like a ghost's would. Allura could feel the warmth of her skin and the silk of her sleeve which tickled her chin.

"Allura, my darling."

"Mother!" Allura flung her arms around her mother's shoulder. Melenor cried as she stroked her daughter's hair. From her mother's shoulder she saw her father, eyes flooding with tears and he hugged the two women. Overwhelmed by emotion Allura could barely stand. She sank to the ground, her parents joining her. She soaked in their embrace, never wanting to let go. Coran stood before them, unsure if to join them or not. He couldn't believe his eyes. His king and queen had returned. Alfor saw Coran's hesitation and offered him his hand. Coran presumed it would be a firm handshake but instead Alfor pulled Coran into the hug. The old Altean cried tears of joy as he hugged his dear old friends once again.

Keith stood before the man dressed in humble clothing. Like Melenor, he reached his hand out and held Keith's face. The man's skin was rough as though he had been working for hours on end, which was exactly how Keith remembered his father's hands felt like after a long day and when he tucked him in.

"Dad?"

"It's good to see you again, Son." Steve's voice cracked, unable to control himself. Keith sobbed like a child and he hugged his father for the first time in years. When Steve looked up he saw Krolia, every bit as beautiful as she was when he first laid eyes on her. His eyes called to her and she listened. Steve was holding his wife and son again.

As for Ember, she didn't know how to react. She was seeing her grandparents embrace their children. Their bodies glowed with an otherworldly light but they were there. Their children could touch them and feel them. Ember had never seen her parents cry this much and she couldn't blame them. She wanted to cry too. Then she remembered there were two other guests. One was an older looking Galra, no older than Kolivan who bore some resemblance to Acxa in a way. His eyes were friendly and welcoming, filled with so much life despite being, well, a ghost, for lack of a better term. There was another form who didn't have two legs, but four. She smiled at Ember and repressed memories bombarded Ember's mind like stars falling from the sky. This creature had scales almost as red as hers, but her mane was white as snow with eyes as green as her own. Ember knew who this creature was. She was a longma... she was...

"Mother?"

"Ember. My baby."

"How... how are you—"

"The White Lion gave us all one last chance to see you all."

"The White Lion?"

Hearing this Allura, Coran and her parents stood back up. Allura was still crying, she wasn't sure if she could stop. "The White Lion?" She said, repeating Ember's question. "So, this is only—"

"Temporary, yes." Alfor said. "But it's enough time for us to properly say goodbye."

"Hey, you guys going to ignore me?" The Galra waved.

"Regris!" Keith and Allura rushed to their old friend who laughed like a jolly old Saint Nick when they hugged him.

"I missed you kids, too."

"Regris, I am so sorry!" Keith sobbed while wiping the tears from his eyes with the palm of his hand. "It was my fault!"

"No, no, kid. It was never your fault." Regris said as he cleaned the young man's face. "Listen, I had already lived my life the best I could, but you still had a lot to live for. I don't regret giving my life for yours. From the looks of it you did pretty well for yourself, Emperor. So please, don't blame yourself for what happened. If given the chance I would have done it all over again."

"Thank you. Thank you for everything."

"I'm the one who should be thanking you. You both not only saved the universe but you saved my daughter. If you ever felt you needed to repay me, consider it done."

Allura held Regris's hand close to her face. "We love you so much."

"I love you too."

"Wait, what about Acxa, shouldn't she—"

"She will. I have one more stop to make. I just wanted to see you both one more time before I did. I do have one final piece of advice for you both. Though, I have a feeling you already knew it."

"Keep the stones close." Keith said.

"Yes, but also this. Honor the past, but keep moving forward. Keep making mistakes and keep learning from them. The Galra and Alteans are in good hands."

"Goodbye, old friend." Keith said as he held Allura, who was still crying.

"Hey, I'm not that old!" Regris laughed, "Goodbye, Your Majesties." Regris bowed once more before disappearing into a trail of dust to see his daughter one last time. Alfor gave Coran's shoulders a firm squeeze.

"Coran, thank you for watching over my daughter. For watching all of these remarkable young paladins."

"It was an honor, King Alfor."

"You have served our family well, my friend." Alfor hugged Coran, making the old man weep. Needless to say, there was a lot of crying from everybody.

Steve and Krolia held each other in their arms for as long as they could, tragically they knew it couldn't last. Steve looked deep in his wife's eyes with all the love he held in his entire being.

"Krolia, I love you. I loved you in life and I will continue to love you in death. I'm sorry I couldn't be there for our son when he needed me most, but you're with him now. Make the most of it."

"I love you too, Steve. And I don't intend to lose another moment with our son."

They kissed once more, pouring everything they had into it before tragically parting. Steve turned to his son. "Keith, I—"

"Wait." Keith interrupted by raising his hand. "I had a lot of things that I wanted to say to your face. But now... I can't find the words. I was angry, and hurt, and scared."

"And you had every right to be angry. I should have gotten out of that building when I had the chance."

"But if you didn't that family wouldn't have survived. I always went back to that thought, and then I think about what Regris did for me. One of the hardest things I've learned as a paladin is that you can't save everyone, and sometimes you have to make very difficult decisions. But I've also learned that from the ashes something good can rise as well. I'm not mad at you anymore, and I know that family you saved will forever be grateful to you. For the small amount of time you were there for me... thank you. A few good memories is better than none. I love you, Dad."

"I love you too, Son. I am so proud of you." Steve hugged his son once more, ruffling his hair and kissing his forehead then turned to Allura. Steve took her hand and gently pulled her close to him and Keith. "Thank you, Allura. For everything you've done for my family. I couldn't have asked for a better daughter-in-law." Steve then kissed her hand.

"And I couldn't have asked for a better father-in-law." Allura was then knocked down by a sudden weight which was also very furry. A German Shepard appeared and started licking the Empress's face.

"Oh yeah, Kosmo 1 wanted to say goodbye too."

Allura laughed and hugged the happy dog. Keith never got a chance to meet Kosmo 1 and now he could. The dog jumped from one person to the next, even licking Ember's face, nuzzling her face with his wet nose. Krolia hugged Kosmo close. The last time she saw him he was shot trying to protect her. She kissed his furry head multiple times.

"Thank you for saving me." She said. Kosmo barked and licked her nose.

King Alfor stood before Keith. Keith was half expecting to feel intimidated by meeting his father-in-law in person for the first time. Alfor looking like he was contemplating on more than five ways to kill him wasn't helping. Then, Alfor dropped his intimidating glare and hugged Keith, lifting him off the ground. Keith could hear his spine cracking.

"Not gonna lie, I half wasn't expecting this." Keith said, nearly out of breath when Alfor released him.

"Sorry, I have wanted to meet you for a long time, my boy. I can't thank you enough for all you've done for my daughter. Steve, you raised a fine young lad."

"And you raised a spectacular young woman." Steve said, winking at Allura. This man was definitely Keith's father.

Queen Melenor showed her gratitude by kissing her son-in-laws cheek. "We know you will both be very happy together." She said as she snuggled close to her husband.

"I believe they already are." Alfor said, raising an eyebrow in a rather suggestive manner which prompted his wife to elbow him in the stomach. Both Keith and Allura covered their faces in humiliation.

Coran laughed, "Like mother like daughter."

"Even in death you still find ways to humiliate me, Father." Allura mumbled behind her hands. Alfor laughed and kissed his daughter's forehead. "But I've missed you so much."

"I've missed you too. You have accomplished everything I couldn't and much, much more. You are my daughter but you are also Allura. As tragic as it is to say, the age of Altea is over. But the age of Arielle has only just begun. I have no doubt that you will lead your people justly and fairly. I am so proud of you."

"I love you, Father."

"I love you too, Allura." Alfor held his daughter's hands for a while longer before, sadly, slowly letting go.

Ember rubbed herself against her mother. "Mom, do you have to go now?"

"I'm sorry, sweetheart. I'm sorry I couldn't be there for you when you were growing up. But never forget that I was always watching over you. I've seen the brave and smart longma you've become, far more than I could have ever hoped. You saved our kind from near extinction, you're a hero."

"It wasn't just me. It was them who taught me never to give up on people."

Ember's mother looked at Keith and Allura and bowed her head. "Thank you for raising her. If she had stayed with me she would have wound up like all the others, but you inspired her to become more than what any longma thought we could be. For that I am forever grateful." She nuzzled her daughter one more time. "I will always be watching you, Ember. Never forget."

"Wait! There is one thing I always wanted to ask you. What was my birth name? Did I have a different name before?"

"Well, I did sometimes call you Sweetie Drops."

Ember's jaw dropped. "Say wha...?"

"That was because you—"

"You know what, it's best I don't know."

Her mother laughed, "I think Ember suits you a lot better."

"I think so too."

"It's time for us to leave." Steve said with a heavy heart. The families each bid their final farewells but before they left there was one final thing they needed to do. Ember's mother gently pushed her towards Alfor, Melenor and Steve. Melenor kneeled down and opened her arms, waiting for Ember.

Ember pranced with joy and galloped to her grandparents. Melenor, Steve and Alfor all held Ember like the precious treasure she was. Blood or no, she was their granddaughter and they were her grandparents. She couldn't have asked for a more stellar family than this one.

Their bodies became dust again which was then carried into the wind. The strings of dust went into the castle windows, and the spirits of Alfor, Melenor and Steve hovered over Shira and Regris. The twins giggled, reaching up for the dust, sensing someone was there. Someone who loved them unconditionally. The grandparents smiled at their grandchildren before disappearing.

Shiro and Romelle fell asleep in each other's arms while on the couch. Romelle's head was nuzzled in between Shiro's chin and shoulder while his arm was snaked around her waist.

A harmonizing sound was what awoke them. Romelle sensed someone had entered the room but she didn't hear the doors open nor any footsteps. Shiro rubbed the sleep from his eyes and woke Romelle with a gentle tap on the shoulder. The lights of the room were off yet another source of illumination came from the bright stars hovering before them. Though Romelle couldn't see them she could feel the heat radiating off of the mysterious force.

The stars manifested into solid shapes, the shapes of people. Shiro recognized three of them. His parents and grandmother, but the other three people he did not know. They were Alteans, a woman with red hair identical to that of the young boy with her, and a man with blond hair, nearly identical to that of Romelle's.

"Shiro, what's happening?" Romelle asked, reaching for his arm.

"Do not be afraid, my dear." The Altean woman spoke. Romelle gasped.

"It... it can't be!"

"It is." Said the Altean man. The young boy approached Romelle. He assured Shiro he would not harm her and took Romelle's hand in his, holding it close to his face for Romelle to feel his features and the prickliness of his unkempt hair.

"Bandor? Is it really you?"

"It's me, sister."

"But how? How are you alive?"

"I'm not. Neither are mother and father."

"So you're... ghosts?" Shiro asked, trying not to sound as frightened as he really was.

"It's okay, Son. We're not here to haunt you." Said the man who bore a striking resemblance to Shiro, minus the scar and white tuft of hair. Shiro recognized that corny sense of humor anywhere. Knowing Romelle was safe with Bandor, Shiro got up from the couch and approached the three people, all of which had rounded ears and Asian-features. The woman, who was shorter than both her husband and Shiro, reached for her son's face with tears in her eyes. She felt so real.

"You're here. You're actually here." Shiro cried.

"Yes, sweetie." His mother said, "Mommy's here."

No matter how old Shiro got his mother always used to say that every time he was upset. It used to annoy Shiro the older he became, but since her and his father's passing he would have given anything to hear her say those words again. Even now, as a grown man, he cherished those words more than any birthday or Christmas gift combined. He held his mother in his arms, she was so small by comparison to her son as he held her in his arms, but right now Shiro was the one who was receiving the comfort instead of giving it. Now he remembered where he learned to hug like that, it was from her. His mother was the one who taught him how to comfort someone when they were scared of being alone.

His father was a man of few words, but he was never one who fell short when it came to expressing love through his actions. Shiro's father rarely cried, not because he was hardened but because it took a lot for him to so much as shed a lone tear. Right now twin waterfalls came from his eyes as he took in every inch of his now fully grown son. His little boy was a man now. Shiro couldn't find the words, he just held his parents, kissing their faces. Their laughter mixed with their sobs.

Lastly was Shiro's grandmother. She looked slightly younger than Shiro remembered, looking identical to how she was when he was a boy. When he started rebelling against her and mingled with the wrong crowd. She held her grandson's face in her hands, beaming with pride.

Romelle hugged Bandor, taking in the smell and feel of his clothes, the messiness of his hair and the sound of his laughter. Her parents held their children. Romelle felt her mother's lips on her cheeks and forehead and her father still smelled of fruit and vegetables from hours of working in the garden. Their mother smelled of spices and mint-leaves and flower petals. They were here, they were actually here.

"Romelle, my darling daughter." Her mother said as she rubbed her baby girl's head with one hand. "I am so sorry. We never should have left you."

"You were tricked by Lotor, Mother." Romelle said between sobs. "It wasn't your fault."

"We should have seen through his lies." Romelle's father said as he tucked a stray strand of hair behind her ear. "But you never gave up on us. You fought for the truth no matter what anyone else said. We are so proud of you."

"You're not staying forever, are you?" Romelle said. She knew her deceased family being here had to be done by some divine intervention. They felt real and smelled real, but their energy was different. They barely needed to breath as they spoke, which meant despite their physical forms they weren't here in body but in spirit.

"I'm afraid not, sister." Bandor said. "We only came here because we wanted to let you know that you don't have to hold onto this grudge any longer. Yes, we were just as horrified and betrayed by Lotor just as you were, but we also know the truth. We know of his actions and of his past and we understand now. We have seen Lotor tending to our graves almost every day."

Romelle was shocked to learn of this. "He what?"

"It's true. He speaks to us. He apologizes every day yet he still isn't sure if it's enough. He didn't tell you or anyone because it didn't matter whether they knew or not. He simply wanted to make amends with us."

Romelle was even more shocked. Yes, she was aware that Lotor wanted to change but him tending to the graves of the deceased may not have seemed like much, but the fact that he didn't tell anyone else spoke volumes. He didn't want people to start accepting him by parading his good deeds, he only did so for the people he had wronged even if they were already long gone. Lotor wanted to do something for them even if it meant he didn't receive anything in return. It was a small gesture, but his humility and generosity spoke volumes. This Lotor was not the king she had adorned as a child, nor the cruel man she hated as a woman, he was simply Lotor. A man who was lost and now was finding his way back home.

"We have already forgiven him." Bandor continued, "Where we are now there is no need for grudges. You can take as much time as you need sister. I know you will forgive Lotor in time, but you can rest easy because we hold nothing against him or you. We are at peace, we all are. You can be at peace too. Your time of mourning is over, now it is time for you to start living again."

Romelle cried into her brother's arms and as she sighed she felt the last piece of her burden roll off her back. She had been feeling a lot lighter these past few months, bonding with her new friends and Shiro, but now, hearing her family and all the other Alteans were finally at peace was all she needed to hear. If they could let go of their anger then so could she. The past was past, it was time for a new beginning, and though she could not see it with her eyes she knew that her future was right beside her, hugging his own family before they had to leave.

"It's your time too, Shiro." Said his grandmother. "I forgave you a long time ago, you know that. Even when you were being a brat I still loved you and looking at you now I couldn't be prouder."

"You've done a good job with these kids, Son." Said Shiro's father, "The worst part of your journey is over. Enjoy your new life."

"I love you guys."

"We love you too, baby." His mother said, unable to control herself. She cried into her son's arms once more before letting go. Bandor took Romelle's hand and then Shiro's placing them together.

"Oh, and tell Luca I said hello." Bandor said. Romelle laughed and ruffled his hair one last time. The two families disappeared in a patch of dust, switching on the lights of the room. Shiro wiped Romelle's remaining tears and she pulled him in close and their lips met once more.

Acxa slept with her father's knife beside her pillow. She wasn't used to sleeping peacefully, sometimes she would go days and weeks without much sleep and it wouldn't affect her mental health much. She trained her body to be a weapon, her mind was no different. Yet now, being able to sleep and be lazy was something she never thought she would get again, and she was milking it for all its worth.

Tonight she was woken up by someone rubbing her shoulder. It was still night so who could be waking her up at this hour? The shake wasn't frantic so it couldn't have been an emergency. When she opened her eyes Acxa practically jumped on her bed.

"Hey, relax. It's just your old man."

"Daddy!" Acxa flung her arms around her father. He was bathed in a heavenly glow but he felt real when she touched him. She didn't care if this was just a dream, but it couldn't be. Could it?

"Is this real?" Acxa asked, only for her father to pinch her arm. "Ouch!"

"Nope, definitely real."

"Hey, that's not funny!" Acxa complained, she sounded so much like the little girl she used to be, being playfully teased by her father. "But how, why are you here?"

"I'm afraid it's only for a little while, kiddo. I was given this one chance to see you one last time."

"So, you're still..."

"Dead? I'm afraid so. But hey, don't be upset. Let's make the most of this. I heard you got picked to be the new leader of the Blades."

"Yeah. Kolivan gave me this." Acxa pulled her new knife from under her pillow. When Regris saw it words couldn't describe the feeling of holding his old weapon in his hands again.

"This brings back a lot of memories. But, none as precious as the memories I have of you and your mother."

"I can't believe you were alive this whole time. We both thought the other was dead." Acxa hung her head in shame, "Dad, I am so sorry. I did... terrible things. Things I never wanted to do but I thought—" Regris held his daughter in his arms.

"Shush, shush, it's okay. I know all about it and I understand. The Empire... has a way of breaking even the strongest of spirits. But you were a lot stronger than I ever was. Even when you were out doing the things you now regret you still kept that stone close."

"I did... it just wasn't in my heart."

"But it was still there, waiting for you whenever you needed it in spite of everything. That hope, that tiny little flame whispering in your ear... that was your mother and I. We were always with you every step of the way. We never gave up on you. Even with all of that you still found friends. Sure, one of them betrayed you but one out of two isn't so bad. Given the circumstances, that's an accomplishment in and of itself."

"Daddy, I promise I will be better. I will never forget what you taught me. I will make you proud of me."

"Little Diamond, I already am proud of you. Look at what you've done already."

"I haven't done anything."

"Are you kidding? You held onto your friendships even when your very culture told you it was pointless. Ezor and Zethrid stuck by you because you refused to give up on them. You could have had a chance to kill Keith but you didn't. You spared him just as he had spared you and you helped Lotor save the paladins from the witch. You got the rest of the Galra to come together and fight against the shadow monsters. You may think those moments don't matter much but they do, even the small moments have value. One small thing can make a very big difference. You are everything I always knew you would become. You've already made me proud."

"And your mother." Another voice was heard and there in front of them was Acxa's mother, every bit as beautiful as they remembered.

"Mom!" Acxa held her parents, wishing this moment could last forever.

"Acxa, sweetie, you don't have to be defined by the past anymore. That part of the story is over. What happens next is up to you. Whatever happens, you already have everything you need to face it. You're not alone anymore."

"I know that now. I love you guys."

"We love you too, Little Diamond." Regris and his wife kissed their daughter's forehead before disappearing into dust again. The dust swirled around Acxa and flew out her window. Acxa looked on as the dust rose into the sky, merging with the stars.

Kova awoke Lotor in the middle of the night. He spit out the feline's fur when it got into his mouth. It was so different Kova having a full body of healthy hair than having it be so slim it was practically a second layer of skin. Lotor was just grateful he hadn't started spitting out fur balls yet.

"Kova, what is it? You can't be hungry already." Lotor gently placed the cat back on the floor and saw something shimmering from the window. Honerva noticed this as well. She was the first to exit her bedroom and enter the back garden. Lotor and Kova joined soon after. A patch of dust spiraled in front of the statue of Zarkon. Lotor held his mother back, wary of this unexplained phenomenon.

The flower buds bloomed around them and the dust took on the form of two shapes. Just like with the others, the shapes were in the form of those they had loved and lost. Standing before them was none other than Zarkon himself and, to Lotor's amazement, the woman he loved long ago.

Zarkon looked just as he did when Lotor first saw him. He was still in his spirit form, but now he radiated with a heavenly glow. His face was as kind and sincere as it was before. Honerva was at a loss for words.

"Zarkon? Is it really you?"

Zarkon took his wife's hands and held her face. There was not a shred of doubt in Honerva's mind anymore. This was her husband, freed from the hold of the dark creatures.

"Honerva, my love. How I have missed you."

"I never thought I would see you again."

Lotor stepped closer to the woman dressed in green from head to toe.

"Venta?"

"Hello, Lotor." Seeing his confusion, Venta then flicked his forehead. "No, it's not a shadow creature this time."

Lotor laughed, "It is you!" He scooped Venta up and spun her around. The couple laughed, elated to be together again. Lotor didn't think twice before crashing his lips against hers. "I can't believe it! I've wanted to see you again for so long."

"I know."

Hearing this reminded Lotor of the tragic truth. He did everything he could to see her again... including lie, kill and betray. He let go of Venta, regret cloaked his features.

"Venta, I... I can't even say I'm sorry because I know it's not enough. I don't know what I was thinking, none of what I did would have brought you back and even if it did how could you have bared to look at me after knowing what I had done? How could you ever forgive me?"

"Lotor, I know everything. I know about the Alteans, about the portal, everything. And it broke my heart so much seeing you change from the man I loved into someone so twisted and desperate."

"I know. I'm ashamed of that man."

"I know you are. But, in spite of all of that, I never stopped loving you or praying that you would see the light again. The man I knew, the man I loved, was still there he just needed a reason to come out again." Venta placed her hand against his heart, "When those paladins came into your life you felt your heart beating again. You already knew what falling in love felt like, but with the paladins you learned what true sacrificial love felt like. That was the missing piece you needed to break free of your chains. I am eternally grateful to them, and I am so proud of the man you have become." Venta took Lotor's hands, her eyes saddened.

"I don't have a lot of time left. I just wanted to let you know that I forgive you. That no matter what you've done my love for you never changed. But as of today you need to stop mourning for me. I don't regret the time we spent together, no matter how small, and I am at peace. Me and my people are at peace, so now I need you to be at peace. I want you to live your life, to continue the work you have started. Maybe even find someone new."

Lotor was taken aback by this. He had longed for Venta for so long he didn't know if he could learn to fall in love again. Venta laughed, "It's okay. It doesn't have to be right away, but when that special girl comes around don't be afraid to open your heart again. I will be happy for you, I promise. I just want you to live, Lotor. That is the only thing I ask of you."

Lotor didn't argue with her. He knew she was right, it was time for him to move on. Trying to cling onto the past was one of the many things that nearly destroyed him. He would want Venta to have this wish and vowed that he would live in the present and work towards a better future.

"Thank you for loving me." He said, kissing her hand, "Thank you for never giving up on me. I won't mourn any longer. But no matter what happens, I will always love you, Venta."

"I know. And I will always love you too." Venta pulled Lotor in for one more kiss. As Zarkon and Honerva watched the two embrace, Zarkon too kissed his wife's hands.

"She's right." Zarkon said, "It's time for both of us to move on."

"I'm sorry. I dragged you into all of this."

"It was my choice too, my love. My own greed and pride was my downfall. Forgive me for what I did to you and our son."

"Of course I forgive you. Please forgive me as well."

"I already have." The couple embraced one final time and Zarkon turned to his son. "Lotor... my son. My pride and joy. You are every bit the man I failed to be. Never be ashamed of your bloodline, for you exemplify the best of both our people."

"I'm sorry I had to give up the throne, Father."

"You made the right choice. Our royal lineage may have ended with you, but our family's story is only just beginning. I love you, my son."

"I love you too, Father."

Father and son embraced and just like with all the others the spirits of Zarkon and Venta disappeared into dust, rising up into the sky alongside the stars. The harmonizing melody was heard again, this time by everyone. Galra, Alteans, visiting allies and dignitaries from all around were awoken by the sound. The dust spun around everywhere, carrying with them the spirits of the deceased, awakening their loved ones to let them know that they were all at peace. Nebula and Celeste even felt the presence of their mates, their beloved mates every bit as strong and handsome as they were when they were alive. They were even given the chance to see their children again. Comet's father was so proud of the young lad he had become and Silver Star's father was so excited to learn of all the heroic endeavors she had done. Celeste and Nebula finally got to bid their husbands farewell and were at peace at long last.

Lance, Hunk and Pidge heard the singing too and ran out of the castle. Shiro and Romelle, carrying the twins, were close behind, joining Keith, Allura, Coran and Krolia in the garden. They watched as the sparkling dust danced above their heads making the flowers buds blossom. Acxa ran out of her room, joined by Zethrid and Ezor and later Lotor and Honerva.

The spirits sung which awoke the heart song in everyone, finally finding that peace they had so longed for.

The following morning was bittersweet. Lance, Hunk and Pidge were packing up their things to head for home. Keith and Allura supplied them with a ship with everything they would need. Allura gave Pidge all the data she would need to replicate the wormhole technology back on Earth with her father and Matt, and the Balmarans gifted Hunk a Balmara crystal which would sustain and power their tech for at least eighty Earth years. Everything was set.

Lance closed his suitcase, a gift from the Alteans to put all of his stuff. Which wasn't much aside from a few hair and face care products Coran gave him during their first stay at the castle. He looked around the empty room one last time. The doors swung open.

"All packed up?" Keith asked. He ditched the regal clothing hours ago, now wearing his casual Earth inspired clothing with some subtle Altean and Galran details. The man was the ruler of an entire planet yet he still insisted on dressing up in biker leather jackets and fingerless gloves. Some things just never changed.

"Yep." Lance said, showing Keith the luggage.

"Just one?"

"We didn't really have a lot of time to pack before zooming off into space on a flying blue lion."

"Right."

"So... this is happening."

"Yeah. I mean, we always kind of knew it would."

"Yeah, yeah we did. It just feels like it's been a lot longer. I also kind of assumed we would all be going back to Earth. You know, since Coran and Allura didn't have a home planet at the time and it was only a matter of time until you two tied the knot, started a family, maybe moved into that old shack of yours."

"Well, two out of three isn't so bad." Keith said with a laugh.

"Yeah. A castle is definitely an upgrade." Lance said, scratching the back of his neck and an awkward silence took hold. Keith sighed.

"Okay, can we not beat around the bush here?"

"What do you mean?"

"After everything we've been through are we seriously getting awkward about saying goodbye? You guys sang a song for us last night."

"It's not that I'm embarrassed it's just... I don't want to say goodbye! There, I said it. I'm really going to miss you. You, Shiro, Allura, Ember, Coran, the twins, the mice and the wolf, heck even Romelle." Lance shielded his eyes with his arm, wiping the incoming tears with the sleeve of his newer, cleaner jacket. "Hunk was right. Things aren't going to be the same anymore, and I don't know if I can handle that."

Lance was surprised when Keith hugged him first. The shock caused him to drop his suitcase.

"I'm going to miss you too." Keith said, still holding the younger man. "I wouldn't be where I am now if it wasn't for all of you. And you, Lance, you're the little brother I never had. I couldn't have asked for a better right hand man. I'm not asking you not to be sad, and I know you're scared about what happens next, but you don't have to be. Whatever happens next you'll be ready to face it, I know you are. And we'll still be here when you come back to visit."

Lance was crying the entire time Keith was talking. Only when he finished did Lance hug him back He was right, about everything. The future was scary, going back to Earth now was scary. Lance wasn't the same boy he once was, he wasn't even a boy anymore. But whatever happened next he would face it head on no matter how scared he was. He learned that from Keith. His best friend. His hermano.

Once the hug was over Keith wiped Lance's tears with his palm. "You're going to be okay."

"I know." Lance said, licking his tears. "I just remembered something. Before all of this Iverson told me that if I ever wanted to make something of myself I shouldn't follow in the footsteps of someone like you. But when I get back I am going to prove just how wrong he was."

Keith beamed with pride, touched by his words. "I have no doubt about it. I love you, Lance."

"I love you too, Mullet."

The two friends hugged each other one more before leaving the room. Lance took one final glance and smiled before the doors closed. One adventure was over, now it was time to begin another.

(~)

"Pidge, ready to head out?" Matt asked, joking with his sister as she stood in front of the empty cryopods that once housed the slumbering Allura and Coran. She carried her suitcase in her hand. "You okay?"

"Yeah, just... reliving some old memories. This was where we first found Allura and Coran. Where we first learned about the war and where we first became paladins. It feels like it's been ages."

"I know what you mean. Time really flies by when you're in space." Matt gave her shoulder a firm and loving squeeze. "You saved the universe. You've grown up so much. I'm really proud of you, Katie."

"I'm proud of you too."

"Come on. Everyone else is waiting."

(~)

Hunk trailed his fingers over the kitchen table one final time, recollecting all of the delicious meals he whipped up. All the smiles they brought to people's faces, and even the moment the food goo machine came to life and attacked him. Maybe not all memories were pleasant but at least they were unforgettable.

"Well old friend, it's been a fun ride. Maybe we'll see each other again one day. Be good to the next chef that walks into these walls, okay? There's gonna be a lot more meals to make, and that means a lot more smiles."

With that Hunk bid the kitchen farewell and walked out, hoisting his backpack over his shoulder.

(~)

Everyone was gathered outside the castle and near the ship that would take the Garrison trio and Matt back to Earth. When Lance, Pidge and Hunk saw the ship they were almost hesitant to get on it. Earth was their home and they had family waiting for them, but they could also say the same thing about Arielle. Lance remembered Keith's words; They would still be there when they got back. Luckily for them, he and Allura also had a surprise.

Before that however, the three former paladins bid farewell to their longma friends. Ember hugged her aunty Pidge, and her uncles Lance and Hunk. Saying goodbye to her the first time was difficult enough, this time it was way harder, but they knew that she was in good hands. Ember was growing up fast, before long she would be as tall as Nebula and Celeste.

Aura removed her goggles, she wanted to see Pidge clearly before she left so she couldn't risk having her lenses smeared with tear stains. Pidge sweetly shielded her eyes with a notebook so Aura could see her friend clearly despite the bright sunlight.

"Take care of yourself, okay?" Pidge said as she cleaned Aura's tears. "Never stop reaching for the stars, even if it seems impossible."

"I won't. Will I ever see you again?"

"Of course you will. Goodbyes aren't forever."

"Then, let's not say goodbye, just... see you later."

"Okay. I'll see you later, Aura."

As for Blaze, he had a difficult time holding it together. Lance didn't say anything, he just let him cry as much as he wanted to while hugging him close. Blaze's wings were wrapped around Lance.

"I hate goodbyes!" Blaze sobbed.

"Me too, buddy. Me too. But you're going to be okay, I know you will. Whatever happens you'll be ready to face it. You've got your sister and your friends so don't think you ever have to deal with anything by yourself." Lance cleaned Blaze's face, holding him up until their eyes met. "You will go the distance, hermanito."

"I'm going to miss you."

"I'm going to miss you too. But we'll be back."

"Then I'll be right here when you do."

Silver Star and Celeste handed Hunk a box filled with delicious pastries for the road. "The extra ones are for your family. I hope they like them." Said Silver Star.

"I bet they will. I have something for you too." Hunk reached into his pocket and pulled out what appeared to be a flash drive styled into a necklace which he placed around Silver Star's neck. "It's all recordings of all my best recipes for you and your mom to make together. And Kolivan too." The gift made Silver Star tear up. She hated saying goodbyes more than anything else in the world. Hunk lifted her chin up. "Never stop being creative and wild, Silver Star. Whatever you do, be sure to pour your heart into it." Hunk opened his arms and Silver Star jumped in, wrapping her wings around her friend.

These little longmas had changed so much since meeting their paladins. Blaze became a more modest and confident young lad who believed in his sister, Aura learned to see her disabilities as a gift rather than a burden, and Silver Star finally embraced her creative side, which brought much joy to all she encountered. The paladins themselves changed a lot too. Silver Star reminded Hunk that no matter how scary things got to never forget what he was fighting towards. Blaze helped Lance in seeing that it was the little things that really meant something to people, and Aura brought out a side of Pidge that revealed the kind, nurturing and loving person she really was.

Shiro and Matt bid each other farewell. The last time they were separated it was beyond their control, now they were parting on their own terms. As sad as it was to say goodbye for now they were happy that they were both exactly where they were meant to be. Matt would return home and continue his work with Sam, and Shiro would begin his new life on Arielle.

"Take care of yourself, Matt."

"You too, Shiro. And Romelle, keep him out of trouble for me, will you?"

Romelle laughed, taking Shiro's hand in hers. "You can count on it."

Lance, Pidge and Hunk hugged Coran and bid farewell to the mice, who were crying into tiny tissues, until they approached Shiro.

"Have a safe trip back home." Shiro said. Pidge was the first to rush in and hug his waist.

"We're really gonna miss you!" She cried.

"I'm going to miss you too." Shiro invited Lance and Hunk into the hug. "Pidge, you are going to do amazing things, I know it. Lance, never stop working hard. And Hunk... you keep being a lovable lug. All of you, never stop learning."

Lastly it was time to say goodbye to Keith and Allura. The hardest part. To some, these two seemed like the token couple of the group, but for this trio they were the most inspirational people they had ever met, inspiring even Shiro himself in many ways. They couldn't imagine how things would go on without all of them together. Hunk was the first one to bring this up, and now it was finally happening.

"Before you say anything, we have something for you." Allura said. Acxa handed her a beautiful box and when she opened it inside were three colored wristbands with a lion shaped stone in the center. Each band was colored to match their lions, though for Lance his was blue. "Coran modified your wrist devices from your paladin armor. This way we can keep in touch at any time."

The trio happily accepted the wrist bands. "But, you guys don't have em." Hunk said, only to be immediately proven wrong when Keith, Allura and Shiro rolled back their sleeves to reveal they too were wearing their own bands. Allura's was pink, Keith's was red and Shiro's was black, keeping in touch with their roots.

These gifts were more than they could have asked for. Instead of going one by one the entire group rallied together for one final group hug. Lotor was pulled in by Allura when she grabbed his arm. Acxa, Zethrid, Ezor, Honerva, Krolia, Coran, Matt, the longmas, everyone joined in. The last group hug they would have in a long time. When they parted, much to their dismay, Lance sweetly cleaned Allura's tears with his thumb.

"Hey, if you ever decide to visit Earth one day be sure to see your Blue Lion Brother first." Lance said, though he was smiling he couldn't mask his tears either.

"I'm really going to miss you, Lance." Allura said.

"I'm going to miss you too." Lance then turned to Lotor, "Make sure these two don't get into any trouble, alright."

Lotor nodded, "I promise. Take care of yourself, my friend."

"You too, man. You too."

"Hey, maybe one day we can all play Monsters and Mana together again."

"That sounds like a good idea." Pidge said, linking her arm with Lance's. "But this time I get to be the overly dramatic knight."

"Hey!" Shiro protested.

"What are they talking about?" Romelle asked.

Keith laughed maliciously. "Oh, I am going to have a field day with this."

"Don't you dare." Shiro threatened, clenching his jaw. The group laughed, though it was at Shiro's expense it did make the separation a little less painful. The trio bid farewell to the twins, tickling their chins before boarding onto the ship. The trio looked on at the massive gathering of people they had met and saved all throughout their time in space. So many lives touched and changed by their actions. Goodbye was hard, but seeing the positive changes they helped make lifted their spirits. Keith and Allura would lead their people into a new age and whenever the universe needed them they would head the call.

After all, they carried the spirit of Voltron within them, and nothing could ever take that away from them.

Matt got on the pilot's seat and prepared for liftoff. Lance sat in his passenger's seat right next to Pidge. His girlfriend smiled at him and intertwined their fingers. If anyone had told them they would one day leave Earth as virtual strangers and return as a couple they would have labeled them as crazy. Now, it felt like a dream come true. Hunk leaned back in his chair, breathing in and out, a serene look on his face.

"So, Hunk." Lance began, his fingers still intertwined with Pidge's. "Still don't think we should have snuck out of the Garrison that night?"

Hunk smiled and kicked back, folding his arms behind his head and resting his ankle on his knee.

"No regrets."

Inside the castle Allura activated the wormhole. With tears in her eyes she watched as the ship flew into the vortex only to release millions and millions of galaxies away. The Empress's strength wasn't enough to fight off the sadness. Both Keith and Shiro held her close. Ember and Kosmo nuzzled against her legs and the mice sprinkled her cheeks with tiny kisses. She knew that the tears hadn't ended yet, but she didn't mind.

The one thing that trumped her sadness was that her friends were finally home. They all were.

(~)

Sam and his wife Colleen Holt had received Pidge's message. Their babies were coming home at long last. They immediately contacted Lance and Hunk's families, and they all gathered at the Garrison, with welcome home cake and party poppers to surprise them with. Iverson and many other members of the Garrison were also present, ready to welcome their intergalactic heroes. A wormhole opened up in the sky and out flew a ship. When it landed the families were beyond themselves with joy when they saw their children exit.

It had been almost two years and it showed. Lance had become a man, confident and humble, Hunk carried himself with a courage his family always knew he had, and Pidge didn't shrink back at the sight of a crowd of people, nor did she hide behind her computer screen. She was bold and lively like a butterfly that just sprouted out of its cocoon.

Lance kneeled on the ground when his niece and nephew jumped into his arms. Their Uncle Lance was finally home! The young Cuban boy was enveloped in the arms of his family. His parents, his grandmother, his siblings, cousins, aunts, great aunts and great uncles, everybody. Pidge jumped into her mother's waiting arms and was nearly licked to death by their family dog Bae-Bae. Sam was so happy to see his daughter in person after so long. Hunk too was surrounded by loved ones. He missed them so much but he struggled to say it because he was choking up as he cried. His parents didn't care, they were just so happy to have their son home at long last.

Pidge and Lance were practically jumping with glee as they introduced each other to their respective families. Colleen immediately welcomed Lance, saying Pidge had selected a very handsome young man, and Lance's family practically adopted Pidge right there on the spot. Lance's family was just as energetic and friendly as he described; they were already inviting her and her family to dinner. Hunk was also invited, along with his family, by Lance and Pidge's insistence. They felt it was best for them to celebrate being home again together.

As for Iverson, he apologized for how he treated the kids before and he and the rest of the Garrison crew gave the paladins a salute and medals of honor for their heroism and saving Earth from a potential invasion. Their story would be told to many throughout the world.

Back on Arielle, night had fallen. Ember had already begun reading to the twins. The babies were snuggled up against their big sister, who curled herself around them, using her wing as a blanket. Keith and Allura wrapped them in a blanket for extra warmth and kissed each of their heads. As the couple prepared to close the door they looked at their children one last time, soaking in the peace they had fought for so long. Now, they could enjoy it.
