Where Irma was, she was hiding next to some wooden boxes crying. She really wanted the mission to end so she can escape.
"I cannot take zhis any longer...I need to escape now!" she said, all in tears of sorrow. "But I don't think I can anymore...I'M TRAPPED!"
Just then, Indy and Marion, who both stowed away on the U-boat somehow, noticed Irma crying while hiding in the boxes. Despite not knowing her name and not having a full conversation with her, they thought that now was a good time to talk to her, hoping she will say what was going on that was making her feel so sad and upset.
"Look Marion!" said Indy, spotting Irma. "There she is!"
"It's her!" said Marion. "Oh gosh, she's crying..."
"Let's go talk to her," said Indy.
Indy and Marion walk to Irma as Indy tapped Irma's shoulder. Irma turned around and saw the two good people.
Oh...It is you two again..." said Irma, trying to be nice despite being in tears. "Guten tag…"
"What's the matter?" asked Indy.
"I...I'm trying to escape," said Irma.
"Escape?" said Marion. "From who?"
"Zhe Nazis," said Irma. "Ever since they took over my home country, my life has been terrible! I can't read vhat I want, I don't have free speech...I have too many restrictions and lost most of mein rights! I lost everything! Germany is ruined all thanks to Adolf Hitler and his Nazi Party!"
She gets nervous as she shakes a bit and says, "And being a Nazi Schutzstaffel guard doesn't make it any better! I svear, not a single day goes by vhere everybody doesn't say "Heil Hitler!" or "Sieg Heil!"
Irma gets super nervous and said, "I try so hard to not die...! I have already had too many near death experiences!"
"What do you mean?" Indy asked. "Do they hurt you?"
"Only vhen I break zhe rules," said Irma, "vhich is mostly while I'm at my job…"
"How often does this happen...?" Marion asked.
Irma, while still in many tears, unbuttons her uniform's jacket, untucks her dress shirt, and pulls it up slightly to reveal her physical injuries. She had many dark scars on both her back and belly, from being burnt, whipped, paddled, and even beaten. And some of them were fresh, red marks from recent torturing.
"Oh my god!" gasped Marion, not believing her eyes. "You poor thing!"
"How many times has this happened to you?" asked Indy.
"I do not know have many times I have been tortured..." said Irma.
She starts to cry again as she says, "I lost count after 25...!"
"Hey hey, don't cry..." said Marion, putting her hand on Irma's shoulder. "Who did this to you...?"
Irma tries to regain herself as she told the truth.
"Major Toht..." said Irma. "He's a Nazi Gestapo agent..."
She then said to Marion, "He was the vone who spoke to you in Nepal and tried to hurt you vith a flaming, hot poker…I saw zhe whole thing…"
Marion started to remember the entire scene back at the Raven bar in Nepal. From being face-to-face with Major Toht, to the near torture from the burning poker, to the whole shootout, and to the whole bar burning down to the ground, all which happened a few days prior.
"Oh my god…" said Marion. "And he actually does this to you all the time?!"
"Yes…" said Irma.
"Is that why you were nervous the whole time?" asked Indy.
"Uh huh…" said Irma. "Because he tortures me a lot. He has burnt me numerous times, I've been whipped and paddled, he hits me…I can never get a break from him!"
Irma starts to cry again.
"Oh sweetie…" said Marion, giving Irma a hug. "I'm so sorry this is happening to you…"
"I have to deal vith zhis pretty much every day almost…" said Irma, sobbing.
"How often do you see Major Toht?" asked Indy.
"Every single day," said Irma. "I live vith him…"
Indy and Marion were shocked to hear that Irma lives in the same house the Nazi Gestapo agent does.
"Are you two…related?" asked Marion.
"What is your name?" asked Indy.
Irma was nervous to tell Indy and Marion her name since that will make them find out that she's in fact related to Major Toht.
"It's alright," said Marion, trying to calm Irma down. "You can tell us."
"Really, we won't judge you," said Indy.
Irma sighs and takes a deep breath.
"Irma…" she said, calmly. "Irma Odetta Toht."
"So you're related to Toht," said Marion.
"I am," said Irma, admitting it. "He's my brother…"
"You're his sister?!" said Indy and Marion, as they did a small gasp.
"His little sister…" said Irma.
"I didn't know Major Toht had a sister..." said Indy.
"Neither have I…" said Marion.
"Mmm hmm, it's true..." said Irma. "But I am not scared of him. I never was. In fact, I love him. I love my brother very much..."
"You love him?" said Marion. "But he tortures you, doesn't he? Isn't that what you said just now?"
"I don't care anymore!" said Irma, getting upset. "He's my brother and I love him! I ca-"
"IRMA ODETTA TOHT!" Major Toht shouted angrily from a distance, while looking for Irma.
"Oh no…" Irma said, getting nervous. "It's him! And he's angry! Oh scheiße, vhat am I going to do?!"
"Just do what he says…" said Indy.
"Vhat?! No way!" said Irma, disagreeing with Indy. "I've had enough of taking his orders!"
"Irma, I know you're tired of suffering," said Marion, "but listening to him is the best thing to do. Refusing will make things worse."
"But vhat if he hurts me again?" asked Irma. "Or even kills me?!"
"Marion and I are not going to let that happen," said Indy. "We'll come get you...You will be okay, Irma...Trust me..."
"Vell, okay then," said Irma, whipping her tears with her sleeve.
"IRMA!" Major Toht shouted again.
"Coming!" said Irma, then saying to Indy and Marion. "Sorry, I have to go…Bye…For now…"
Irma walks away and heads back. But the moment she got there, Major Toht looked at her very angrily, with Colonel Dietrich and Gobler right behind her brother with their arms folded.
"Uh…Oh…" Irma said, in a scared and worried voice.
"Irma Odetta Toht!" said Major Toht. "You are in a lot of trouble! Big trouble!"
"But...But vhat did I do?!" asked Irma.
"You lied to me!" said Major Toht. "You lied to Dietrich, you lied to Gobler…You lied to everyvone!"
"Lied?!" said Irma. "Lied to you about vhat?!"
"About why you vanted to come on zhis mission!" said Major Toht.
"But I told you all why!" said Irma. "I told you zhe truth!"
"No, you did not!" said Major Toht. "You vere planning to escape!"
"I said no such thing!" Irma lied. "I wasn't planning to run away!"
Irma sees Major Toht holding her diary and gasps loud and in horror since she figured out that her brother read her entries.
"MY DIARY!" cried Irma, with her hands on her face.
"Yes!" said Major Toht. "You were trying to run away! You can't hide anything from me…"
"IT'S MINE, GIVE IT BACK!" Irma cried, trying to reach for her diary. "ZHAT IS MY PERSONAL PROPERTY!"
"I don't think so!" said Major Toht, holding the diary above her. "You cannot destroy zhe evidence! You have been caught!"
He looks at her and said, "You were trying to flee the country und escape us Nazis! There's only vone way...to punish you...And zhis time...IT VILL BE FOR GOOD!"
"Vhat...?!" said Irma, slowly stepping back in fear.
"Men! Get your weapons!" ordered Major Toht. "Set up her execution!"
"EXECUTION?!" gasped Irma, all terrified as she steps back a lot. "OH NO, NOT ZHAT!"
"You've done it zhis time, Irma..." Major Toht said, slowly follows his sister's footsteps and stares her down. "You have crossed zhe line!"
"Leave me alone, Arnold!" said Irma, nervously. "Go away! You're scaring me!"
Major Toht grabbed Irma and quickly pulled her towards him as Irma did a small scream.
"It's too late, dear sister…" Major Toht said, in a sinister voice. "You turned against the Führer and betrayed us. And now, you must face zhe consequences!"
Irma was extremely scared as she did a huge gulp.
"But first..." said Major Toht, "I must do vhat I always do..."
He picks Irma up and puts her over his shoulder and squeezes onto her so she couldn't escape his grasp. He then starts walking back into the U-boat so he can torture her before she gets killed.
"LET GO OF ME, ARNOLD!" Irma screamed, as she starts hitting Major Toht's back with her fists. "LET ME GO! PUT! ME! DOWN!"
"Struggle all you want!" said Major Toht. "It vill do no good…"
"NO!" screamed Irma, continuing to hit her brother while in his grasp. "YOU CANNOT DO ZHIS TO ME! PLEASE DON'T! PLEASE!"
After Irma's final torture by Major Toht, the Nazi Gestapo agent brings his sister to the execution chamber somewhere in the base where a firing squad was waiting.
"Oh no..." said Irma. "Ooooh noooo!"
Irma tries to run, but Major Toht grabs her and won't let go.
"You're not going anywhere, Irma Odetta Toht!" Major Toht said. "You must pay for your treason!"
"And killing me is zhe answer?!" said Irma. "Arnold, you're crazy! You've gone mad!"
"It's zhe law of the Fatherland," said Major Toht. "Traitors are executed!"
Major Toht places Irma on a pole, puts her arms behind her back, and ties them to the pole with rope so she couldn't move them. He then does the same with her feet. Now the German woman couldn't move a muscle.
"Arnold stop!" cried Irma. "You don't know vhat you are doing! ARNOLD, I AM YOUR SISTER!"
"Zhat does not matter," said Major Toht. "You broke the law! So you must die!"
Major Toht takes Irma's eyeglasses off her face.
"Hey, I need those!" said Irma.
Major Toht puts a blindfolded over his sister's eyes and ties it in place.
"Now I can't see anything!" said Irma.
She then starts to cry for help.
"HELP!" screamed Irma. "SOMEBODY! HEEEELP!"
"SILENCE!" ordered Major Toht, covering Irma's mouth with his hand.
Irma doesn't say another word.
"Vell..." Irma said in her head. "I hope I have a better life in heaven…"
Unbeknownst to Major Toht and the Nazis, Indy and Marion were infiltrating the chamber as they heard everything that was going on.
"Oh my god!" gasped Marion, worried for Irma's life. "Indy, they're gonna kill her!"
"We need to save her!" said Indy. "Quickly!"
They see that Irma was tied to a pole while blindfolded as Major Toht went to the side to witness his sister's execution. The Nazis were about to shoot the poor woman multiple times at once!
"Indy, what will we do?" Marion asked. "We can't let Irma die!"
"I have an idea," said Indy, as he goes to get something. "Stay here!"
"Hurry Indy!" said Marion. "They're about to shoot the poor girl!"
Indy comes back with a grenade launcher.
"Indy, what are you gonna do with that?!" asked Marion.
"You'll see!" said Indy. "Come on, Marion!"
Indy and Marion run into the room where Irma was. And when the Nazi soldiers were just about to shoot Irma, Irma does one last cry, knowing that she was going to die at any moment.
"Hey Nazis!" said Indy, while holding the grenade launcher. "Over here!"
Everyone turned around and saw Indy holding the grenade launcher. They couldn't believe that Indy and Marion somehow got on the island without their knowledge.
"Jones..." said Dr. Belloq, angrily. "JONES!"
"I'm gonna blow up the Ark, René!" threatened Indy. "Unless your friends let the girl go!"
"You think you can stop us, Dr. Jones?" said Colonel Dietrich. "She has betrayed the Führer! And thus, she must pay!"
"Oh, you think I'm kidding around?" said Indy, aiming the grenade launcher at the Ark. "Do ya?!"
"Let Irma go right now or the Ark is gone!" Marion threatened.
"You cannot fool me," said Major Toht. "I am not scared of you..."
"Neither am I!" said Indy.
"Let me ask you this, Toht..." Marion said to Major Toht, putting her hand in Irma's direction. "Do you love your sister? Or do you not?"
Major Toht stood silent.
"Well?!" said Indy.
Major Toht sighs.
"Ja...I do..." said Major Toht. "Despite her betrayal of Nazism..."
"Irma?" Marion said to Irma.
"Yes?" said Irma.
"Do you love your brother, too?" Marion asked. "Yes or no?"
"Yes...I do..." said Irma. "I love my brother very much...I never hated him...Ever..."
"See Toht, she loves you," said Marion. "Despite all you've done to her ever since Hitler came into power and turning your country into a dictatorship, she never hated you."
"You're her older brother," Indy said to Major Toht. "You should be there for your little sister. You're supposed to protect her."
Irma gets emotional as tears fall down her face, past the blindfold.
"Major Toht, think about how she feels right now," said Marion. "She's scared to death…"
Marion then said, "Do you really want to kill her...? Knowing then that you'll never have her in your life again...?"
"Do you realize the mistake you're about to make?" Indy asked Major Toht.
Major Toht looks at Irma for a moment and turns back to Marion and Indy.
"Uhhh…Vell…" said Major Toht, starting to hesitate. "I…I-I…"
"She loves you, Major Toht…" said Indy. "She really loves you…!"
"She always loved you…" said Marion. "She loves you very much…!"
Hearing those words, this made Major Toht realize that what he did to Irma all these years were wrong. And by the sound of Irma crying and the sight of the tears falling down the woman's face, this broke Major Toht's heart as the Nazi Gestapo agent started to have second thoughts on what he was about to do to his own sister.
"Vhat am I doing...?" said Major Toht, feeling guilty. "I'm about to kill my baby sister! I can't do zhis..."
"Major Toht, vhat are you doing?" said Colonel Dietrich. "Zhe execution is not over!"
"I cannot kill my sister!" said Major Toht.
"Are you out of your mind?!" said Colonel Dietrich, not believing what Major Toht just said. "She has betrayed us!"
"It is only punishable by death!" reminded Gobler.
"Then do it yourself because I vill not do it!" said Major Toht. "I won't! I love Irma! She's my sister! She is all I have and you know it!"
Irma continues to cry.
"Men," said Colonel Dietrich, as he sighs since he didn't want to argue with Major Toht anymore. "Veapons down."
The Nazi soldiers lowered their weapons away from Irma. Then Major Toht walks over to Irma and starts untying her from the pole.
"Huh?" said Irma, feeling herself being untied.
Major Toht puts the ropes to the side, removes the blindfold from Irma's eyes, places his sister's eyeglasses back on her face, and sets her down on her feet.
"Arnold…!" said Irma, hugging her brother.
"Irma…!" said Major Toht, hugging his sister in return.
"I knew you loved me back just like I do," said Irma. "You-"
Irma feels herself being grabbed and yanked as she does a small, "Aaah!"
"Hey!" said Major Toht. "Hands off my sister!"
It was Gobler, with Colonel Dietrich right behind him.
"We're not done vith you yet, Fräulein Irma!" said Gobler, while having Irma in his grasp.
"What do you vant, Gobler? Colonel?" said Irma.
"Fräulein Irma," said Colonel Dietrich, "you and Major Toht vill be on zhe altar during the Ark's opening ceremony vith Belloq, Gobler, und myself. And Dr. Jones und Ravenwood vill witness from afar. You hear?"
"Okay..." said Irma. "Ve will..."
She then paused and said, "But on vone condition."
"Oh, and vhat would zhat be?" asked Colonel Dietrich.
"If zhe opening ceremony is successful," said Irma, "you let Dr. Jones and Marion free. As vell as me and my brother."
"But vhat if it fails?" asked Gobler.
"Then der Führer does not receive his prize," said Irma.
Everyone thought what Irma came up with as a compromise was fair and decided to agree on the deal.
"Looks like these Nazis won't let us leave without a fight, Marion," Indy said, putting the grenade launcher down.
"You got that right, Indy," said Marion.
"Now, vhen does zhe ceremony begin?" asked Irma.
Colonel Dietrich notices that the sky was beginning to go dark.
"Oh!" said Colonel Dietrich. "Ve must get ready for it now. Come everyvone!"
Everyone starts to follow Colonel Dietrich to an area in the base where the ceremony will be held in.
"Should we tell her the truth about the Ark, Indy?" Marion asked Indy.
"We might as well," said Indy, then turning to Irma and saying to her, "Irma? Can we talk to you about something for a moment?"
"Sure," said Irma. "Vhat about?"
"It's about the Ark of the Covenant," said Indy. "Since we're heading for the ceremony right now, now is a good time to talk about it."
"Okay Dr. Jones," said Irma. "Is there something I need to know about it?"
"Yes," said Indy. "You see, Irma…the Ark of the Covenant is not of this world."
"It's not?" said Irma. "Then vhat is it?"
"Well, you see…" said Indy, "if one looks inside the Ark, they die."
"Vhat?!" said Irma, with her eyes wide. "Why?!"
"The Ark has supernatural powers," said Marion. "And it will kill anyone who disturbs it by opening it."
This makes Irma very nervous since the Nazis have the Ark and were about to hold the opening ceremony for it.
"Oh my gosh!" said Irma. "I'm going to get killed zhat vay! I cannot go through another near-death experience again!"
"Irma, there is a way to stay alive," said Indy. "Listen carefully…"
Irma goes closer to Indy and Marion as she listens closely on the advice they were about to give her.
"Now Irma," Indy said to Irma. "When the Ark is opened and the supernatural beings come out, whatever you do…do not look at it."
"Keep your eyes closed to entire time if you want to live, Irma," Marion added. "It is the only way. Okay?"
"Okay Dr. Jones. Marion," said Irma, with a nod. "I know vhat to do now…"
She thinks for a good minute and thought of a plan.
"Vhen the Nazis open zhe Ark," she said in her head, "I vill hide somewhere and close my eyes until it is all over. And when the spirits fly out, I vill go get Arnold and tell him vhat to do so he can be safe. I love my big brother so much and I need to still have him in my life…Especially now zhat he realizes that I'm more important than anything in zhe vorld. So ve can run away together!"
Irma smiles and said to herself, "Just like all these years, ever since me and Arnold vere little children…our sibling love alvays wins…I vill not let my brother die! He needs to live! I MUST SAVE HIM!"
