Backlash: 29/4/2007
Backlash was live at the Philips Arena in Atlanta, Georgia. The first match of the event was The Wolfpack vs The Hardys (Matt and Jeff) versus Lance Cade and Trevor Murdoch in a triple threat tag team match for the World Tag Team Championship. Cade and Murdoch controlled a majority of the match; however, The Hardys won the bout when Matt pinned Murdoch after a Twist Of Fate, which was followed by Jeff's Swanton Bomb, becoming the new World Tag Team Champions. However, Jackal immediately had their rematch clause installed and rolled Jeff up for a three count to win back the titles.
The match that followed was Maria vs Melina vs Mickie James in a Triple Threat match for the WWE Women's Championship. The match was short lived, as Melina performed an Inverted DDT on Mickie James when Maria hits a spear then pinned Melina to retain the WWE Women's Championship.
The third match was between Chris Benoit and Montel Vontavious Porter for the WWE United States Championship. Benoit and MVP struggled throughout the match, attempting to gain the upper hand. In the end, Benoit pinned MVP with a small package to retain the WWE United States Championship.
The three-on-one Handicap ECW World Championship match between champion Bobby Lashley and Team McMahon (Umaga, Vince and Shane McMahon) was next. Shane struck Lashley with the ECW World Championship belt and Umaga executed a diving splash on Lashley. Umaga then tagged in Vince, who scored a near-fall. Vince then tagged in Umaga, who executed a second diving splash on Lashley. After being tagged in again, Vince pinned Lashley to win the ECW World Championship and the match for his team.
The next match was The Undertaker against Batista in a Last Man Standing Match for the World Heavyweight Championship. At one spot, Undertaker executed a leg drop through an announce table on Batista. Towards the end, the two fought up the entrance ramp, where Batista executed a spear to The Undertaker off the stage. Neither man could get to their feet before the referee's count of ten; in result, the match ended in a draw. Due to WWE regulations, titles can't change hands in a Last Man Standing match by a draw, so The Undertaker remained champion.
Next was Randy Orton vs Edge vs Shawn Michaels to become #1 Contender for the WWE Championship. Edge came close to winning when Jackal and Bloodwolf suddenly attacked all three men and left them broken, bleeding, and destroyed at ringside. The match was thrown out with no clear winner.
And now it was time for the WWE Championship.
In the arena, The bell was rung and Lillian Garcia began introductions. "The following contest is scheduled for one fall and is for the WWE Championship!" The crowd cheered loudly in joy.
John Cena's theme hits and out comes the former WWE Champion to a pop. Cena runs down and slides into the ring, tossing his hat and shirt off before getting ready for his opponent.
OOOOOOWHOOOOOO!
The Vengeful One hits and out comes the WWE Champion. Bladewolf has the title against his right shoulder as he walks down with his eyes on Cena. He enters the ring and hands the title to the referee before taking off his trench coat as his theme dies down and soon the bell is rung.
'Ding! Ding! Ding!'
The matchup is officially underway. Bladewolf and Cena circle one another before Cena goes for a lock up but Bladewolf tackles him down and delivers a few lefts and rights to Cena, causing the former WWE Champion to cover up. Bladewolf stomps away on Cena multiple times before grabbing him from behind and hits a German Suplex. Bladewolf walks over and unloads with lefts and rights to Cena. The referee tells Bladewolf to get off and give Cena a chance. Bladewolf does so and watches Cena recover before walking over and gets to a knee before hammering away violently with right hands to the skull as Cena covers up until the referee warns Bladewolf again.
The WWE Champion backs off as the referee checks on Cena. Cena gets to his feeds and nods that he was alright.
Bladewolf hits Cena in the head with a right hand, causing him to stumble back. Bladewolf then kicks Cena in the gut before giving another hard right, then another, then he hits a hard left before tackling Cena into the corner where he delivers a few shoulders to the gut until Cena begins delivering elbows to the back of the 4-time WWE Champion.
Bladewolf goes to a knee before he lifts Cena up and slams him onto the mat and delivered a few right hands to the head until the referee got involved, causing Bladewolf to back off.
Bladewolf watched Cena before running up and boots him in the face, causing him to go down again. Bladewolf grabs him around the waist and goes to hit a German Suplex until Cena delivers an elbow to the side of Bladewolf's head and does a few more until Bladewolf let's go. Cena rebounds off the ropes and takes Bladewolf does with a clothesline, going for the cover afterwards. ONE! TWO! THR-! No! Bladewolf kicks out!
Cena gets to his feet and stomped on Bladewolf a few times before picking him up and Irish whips him into the turnbuckle and runs for turnbuckle clothesline when Bladewolf ducks it, grabs Cena from behind and hits a German Suplex. Bladewolf walls over to Cena and goes for the cover. ONE! TWO! THR-! Cena kicks out!
Bladewolf sighs before he delivers a few rights to Cena's head before stopping and locks in a headlock, trying to wear Cena down or make him submit. Cena begins fighting back with elbows to Bladewolf's stomach, forcing the Champion to let him go. Both men get to their feet and run at each other, both clotheslining one another and going down.
Suddenly... BLADEWOLF SAT UP! Bladewolf gets to his feet and grabs Cena, dragging him into the corner before delivering a few stomps to the gut of Cena, then delivers a hard right to the head of Cena.
Bladewolf picks Cena up and drives him into the turnbuckle, driving his shoulder into Cena's gut as well. He does this a few more times before pulling Cena close and hits a belly-to-belly suplex. Bladewolf pulls himself to his feet with the ropes and walks towards Cena, bending down to grab him...WHEN CENA TRIPS HIM UP AND LOCKS IN THE STFU!
Bladewolf yells in pain as the referee checks on him, asking if he'll give up. Bladewolf's right hand clenched as he uses his left to reach for the ropes. Cena applies more pressure to the hold, causing Bladewolf to punch the mat as he crawls and claws his way to the ropes. Suddenly Jackal and Bloodwolf run down the ramp and Cena releases his hold to try and attack them but they backed off.
Cena returns his attention to Bladewolf, he takes advantage and stomps on Bladewolf multiple times before dropping a right to the head. He picks Bladewolf up and Irish whips him off the ropes, ducks a right and lifts Bladewolf up before slamming him onto his back in a familiar way! The crowd gives this a loud reaction as he raised his right hand before bending down to look at Bladewolf.
"You can't see me!" Cena said before he rebounds off the ropes, comes back to hit...THE FIVE-KNUCKLE SHUFFLE! Bladewolf stumbled to his feet and turns around, Cena lifts him up and...HITS THE FU! HE GOES FOR THE COVER! ONE! TWO! THRE-! BLADEWOLF KICKS OUT! Cena's eyes widened while the crowd cheered. He gets to his feet and pulls Bladewolf to his, lifting him onto his shoulders... AND HITS A SECOND FU! HE HOOKS THE LEG! ONE! TWO! THRE-! BLADEWOLF KICKS OUT!
Cena knew he had to hit a third to win. So he picks Bladewolf up, gets him onto his shoulders for a FU, but Bladewolf slides off, rebounds off the ropes... AND HITS A SPEAR! Bladewolf jumps to his feet with a roar as the crowd cheered. He looks around before doing the cutthroat taunt to cheers from the crowd.
Bladewolf grabs Cena and begins lifting him to his feet. But Cena suddenly lifts him onto his shoulders...AND HITS A THIRD FU! HE HOOKS THE LEG! ONE! TWO! THR-! BLADEWOLF KICKS OUT!
Cena's eyes widened as he looks at Bladewolf before hitting the mat in frustration and exits the ring, grabbing a steel chair and slides back into it...STRAIGHT INTO A SPEAR! Instead of going for the cover, Bladewolf grabs the chair and unloads with vicious chair shots to the body of Cena, striking anywhere he can to make Cena cry out in pain.
Bladewolf drops the chair before he begins picking Cena up, only to be lifted up onto Cena's shoulders...AND HIT WITH A FOURTH FU! CENA HOOKS THE LEG! ONE! TWO! THRE-! BLADEWOLF KICKS OUT!
The crowd popped in shock and relief as Bladewolf had still managed to kick out after being hit with four FUs altogether. Cena couldn't even believe it as he got to his feet before rolling Bladewolf over...AND LOCKS IN THE STFU! WILL BLADEWOLF TAP?!
Bladewolf struggles to reach the ropes as Cena pulls more but this allows Bladewolf to roll Cena onto his back and get out of the hood after laying into Cena with hard rights. Bladewolf gets to his feet, pulls Cena to his and onto his shoulders... BEFORE HITTING THE WOLF'S HOWL! Bladewolf pulls Cena to his feet and scoops him onto his right shoulder and in front of him...BEFORE HITTING THE TOMBSTONE PILEDRIVER! HE HOOKS THE LEG! ONE! TWO! THREE! BLADEWOLF RETAINS!
'Ding! Ding! Ding!'
The Vengeful One plays as Bladewolf rolls out of the ring and Maria comes to give Bladewolf the WWE Championship. The Wolfpack were still dominant.
