Chapter 47: I Couldn't Help But Notice

They were nearing the Valmese capital now and there was an air of unease. Though Walhart's forces had retreated for now, there was no telling when they would strike. And there was no doubt that there would be a strong force protecting Walhart's stronghold.

However, what made everyone most nervous was that they knew what this was. This was it. The deciding battle that would end this war, one way or another. Most of Walhart's forces had been bested and now there was only the Conqueror himself, along with Excellus and Cervantes. Win or lose, the fate of Valm would be decided.

Lucina was nervous, but also confident. After all, Robin had yet to fail them. She knew he and Morgan where working day and night to figure out a strategy to best Walhart and win the upcoming battle. Robin had a feeling that there would be a vanguard in front of the capital to ward off any intruders. Robin and Morgan were gambling on the idea that they could defeat this vanguard, then station in front of the entrance with little disturbance. After all, if they did enough damage, then the initial vanguard would be defeated or forced to retreat within the capital, forcing Walhart to regroup and giving the Ylissean forces time to rest. That is of course, given that they win the fight and no other forces corner them outside of the capital.

The army had now arrived in a nearby forest a couple miles outside of the capital. This would give them efficient cover as they prepared for battle. As the camp was being set up, Lucina helped Libra and Maribelle put up the infirmary while Donnel sat nearby. Donnel was unquestionably much better, as his hair was back to it's natural brown and he wasn't stuck in the infirmary too much. However, he was still a little pale and Lucina could tell he was still getting some of his strength back. Due to this, Robin, Maribelle, Libra, and Brady did not give him permission to join the upcoming battle, something Donnel was not excited about.

"I still can't believe I gotta stay in camp." said Donnel.

"You need your rest." said Maribelle.

"I been resting for a over a month now." said Donnel.

"No dear, you've been dying for over a month now." Maribelle corrected. "You need your rest. Once the infirmary is up, I expect you in your bunk straight away."

"Can't I at least help?" Donnel asked.

"We are all set, thank you." said Maribelle. "Just remain where I can see you, for now."

"Heh, you sound like my ma." said Donnel.

"Good to know she has common sense." said Maribelle. "You're lucky we haven't sent her a letter saying what happened to you. Otherwise, I think she would be here by now and have the both of us give you a scolding."

Lucina chuckled a bit, the image of both Maribelle and Donnel's mother scolding him running through her head.

The infirmary was finally up and Lucina left as Maribelle brought Donnel into the tent. Lucina was looking around, wondering what else needed to be taken care of. She was then intercepted by Cynthia, who was coming from setting up the latrines.

"Hey." said Lucina.

"Hey Lucy." said Cynthia, who was cover with dirt from digging.

"I'm looking for a new job to help." said Lucina. "Any suggestions?"

"We haven't set up our tent yet." said Cynthia. "I'm sure Navarre wouldn't mind having his favorite napping spot up."

"Sure, let's go." said Lucina.

The sisters then found a spot and began putting their tent up. A few minutes after they started, Navarre slinked towards them and watched, patiently waiting as his masters worked.

"Hey, Lucy, can I talk to you about something?" Cynthia asked.

"What is it?" Lucina asked.

"It's about Robin and Morgan." said Cynthia. "You're not…bothered by the fact that they spend a lot of time together, are you?"

"Of course not." said Lucina. "Should I be?"

"Well, no." said Cynthia. "Not necessarily. I mean, you trust Robin."

"I do." said Lucina. "Why?"

Cynthia looked around to make sure nobody was listening. Seeing that everyone was busy setting up, she turned back to Lucina.

"Now, I may have been misunderstanding something." said Cynthia. "But a few weeks ago, I was walking in the woods, looking for a place to read in private. As I was walking, I heard voices. It was Morgan and Robin. I was starting to approach them, but they didn't notice me. They were busy talking and burying some hole."

"A hole?" Lucina asked.

"I think it might have been a pitfall." said Cynthia. "Maybe Morgan was testing out a trap or something. Anyway, as I got closer…well…"

"Well what?" Lucina asked.

"Promise you won't get mad?" Cynthia asked.

"Depends on what you are going to say." said Lucina. "Cynthia, what happened?"

"I…" said Cynthia. "I saw Robin give Morgan a kiss on the cheek."

Lucina blinked, wondering if she heard that correctly.

"Robin kissed Morgan?" Lucina asked.

"Yeah." said Cynthia. "On the cheek though. Just on the cheek."

"Are you sure?" Lucina asked.

"Positive." said Cynthia.

"Alright." said Lucina. "I'll have a word with him about that later, but I don't see the big deal about that."

"You're not bothered by that?" Cynthia asked.

"I am a little." said Lucina. "But I think I would be more bothered if Robin kissed her on the lips. As long as that's all that happened, I'm not too mad."

"Um…" said Cynthia.

"What?" Lucina asked.

"Well, nothing else happened." said Cynthia. "But…"

"But?" Lucina asked.

"Morgan said something afterwards." said Cynthia. "She said that they shouldn't be caught like that, y'know, giving each other kisses."

Lucina stood there, taking this in. Robin was not the philandering type, she knew that. However, this did warrant some suspicion. Lucina didn't know anything about Morgan after all.

"I'll be back." said Lucina.

"Please, don't do anything stupid." said Cynthia.

"I just want to talk to Robin." said Lucina. "That's all."

With that, Lucina left Cynthia and went to find Robin.

Robin snored happily, fast asleep in his tent. He had been working all night planning some battle strategies for the upcoming battle and was exhausted. Thankfully, Morgan was putting the finishing touches on the strategies, giving Robin a chance to take a much needed nap. The two had been taking turns in strategizing, each switching off day and night shifts. Robin was grateful for this, because he never got much rest in the past before big battles like this. However, since Morgan was around, he could rest as much as he needed.

Despite the upcoming battle, Robin was having a very pleasant dream. He smiled as the dream continued. He was in a field, the same field he encountered Emmeryn in. However, this time, he was walking hand in hand with Lucina. The two had loving smiles on their faces as they walked. The air was pleasant, the birds were chirping, and a few butterflies flew by. Lucina held out a finger as a butterfly flew on. Robin did the same, with another butterfly joining him.

Lucina then rested her head on Robin's shoulder, watching the butterflies flap their wings. Robin turned and gave her a kiss on the head.

"I love you." Lucina said.

"I love you too." Said Robin.

He then pulled his hand away towards Lucina's cheek, causing the butterfly to flutter away. He didn't care though as he turned Lucina's head towards his. Still smiling, the two leaned in closer for a kiss when-

"Robin." said someone, shaking Robin in his sleep. "Robin."

Robin shook with a start, waking up from his dream.

"Wha-" He said suddenly. He then turned to see Lucina by his bedside. "Oh, hey. Is everything ok? Do you need something?"

"Yes, actually." said Lucina. "Sorry to wake you, but I need to talk with you if you have a minute."

"Sure." Robin yawned. "What's up?"

"Not here." said Lucina. "Let's find another place to talk. I don't want anyone walking in on us."

"Oh, ok." Said Robin. "Why would someone walk…Oh, right. Morgan."

"Yeah." said Lucina. "…Morgan."

"Are you alright?" Robin asked. He thought he heard a tone of bitterness in Lucina's voice when she mentioned Morgan.

"Let's just go and talk." said Lucina.

Robin followed Lucina out of the tent. They eventually found a stack of crates that nobody was working on. They ducked behind the crates and proceeded to talk.

"Lucina, what's going on?" Robin asked, concerned.

"I want to talk to you about Morgan." said Lucina.

"Morgan?" Robin asked.

"Yes, Morgan." said Lucina.

"What about her?" Robin asked.

"You can start by explaining to me why Cynthia found you two in the forest." said Lucina. "And why you gave her a kiss on the cheek."

The two stood there for a second, not saying a word.

"Cynthia…saw that?" Robin asked.

"She did." said Lucina.

Then, to the surprise of both them, Robin laughed.

"This isn't funny!" Lucina said fiercely.

"It kind of is." said Robin. "You don't think Morgan and I-"

"What am I lead to think then?" Lucina asked. "It's not often you kiss someone in private then tell them to keep it quiet."

"Lucina, it's not like that." said Robin.

"Then what is it?" Lucina asked.

Robin took a moment to think. Was now the right time to tell her?

"Lucina, do you trust me?" Robin asked.

"Yes." said Lucina. "But I'll trust you even more if you explain yourself."

"I will." said Robin. "But I can't right now."

"What?" Lucina asked.

"Lucina." said Robin, putting his hand on her shoulders. "Here is the truth. Or at least, as much of the truth I can tell you right now."

"What does that mean?" Lucina asked.

"Just listen." said Robin. He then chose his next words carefully. "In truth…there is something between Morgan and myself. I can't say any more than that right now, but there is something."

Lucina rolled her eyes in annoyance and began to walk away. However, Robin pulled her in further until they were nice and close.

"However." Robin said. "What is between Morgan and I is not the same as what is between the two of us. I wish I could explain it now, it pains me not to be able to explain it now. However, I have to keep it secret for now, not just for us, but for the sake of the army."

"What?" Lucina asked, perplexed.

"You have my word." said Robin. "That when the time is right, I will tell you what my relationship to Morgan is. You also have my word that you are the only woman in my heart. I love you so much, and I'd be a fool to go behind your back like that. Please, Lucina, will you trust me with this?"

Robin saw Lucina take this in. She sighed, then nodded with a slight smile.

"Thank you." Robin smiled. He then hugged Lucina tightly, who hugged him right back. "And, if it makes you feel better, I'll keep my interactions with Morgan a little more public."

Lucina giggled at that remark. She then pulled Robin in for a kiss, which he happily accepted. And to Robin, this kiss felt more satisfying than any kiss he could have had in any dream.

"Move it over there!" Chrom said to a group of soldiers finding a spot for armory. "Keep it near my tent."

Chrom had finished setting up his tent and the mess tent and was now overseeing other duties. As usual, soldiers constantly came to him or Morgan, asking where things needed to go.

"Let's put the stable near the South perimeter." said Chrom. "Closer to the capital when we need the horses and pegasi."

"Yes milord." said a soldier.

The soldier then left and relayed Chrom's order to another group of soldiers. Chrom sighed, as he hated camp setup before a huge battle. The nerves in the camp often caused a few slip ups and he didn't want anybody injured that wasn't already.

"No, no, we're connecting the mess tent and food storage this time." said Chrom as he saw the storage tent being set up farther from the tent. "Please, put them together, back to back."

Chrom continued to survey the area walking around. Something then caught his attention. He heard hushed voices behind a stack of crates. Through a space between the crates, he thought he saw the familiar color of a coat.

Odd. thought Chrom. I though Robin was asleep. Well, better get him over here so that he can help me out.

Chrom walked towards the crates. As he got closer, he could hear the conversation that Robin was having. It seemed that he was talking to Lucina.

"Just listen." Chrom heard Robin say. "In truth…there is something between Morgan and myself. I can't say any more than that right now, but there is something."

Chrom stopped for a second. Something between Robin and Morgan? Chrom wasn't much of an eavesdropper, but his curiosity got the better of him. He heard Lucina scoff, but saw through the crack that Robin grabbed her back and pulled her in tight. A bit too tight for Chrom's liking.

"However." Robin said. "What is between Morgan and I is not the same as what is between the two of us. I wish I could explain it now, it pains me not to be able to explain it now. However, I have to keep it secret for now, not just for us, but for the sake of the army."

"What?" Lucina asked, perplexed.

What? Chrom thought.

"You have my word." said Robin. "That when the time is right, I will tell you what my relationship to Morgan is. You also have my word that you are the only woman in my heart. I love you so much, and I'd be a fool to go behind your back like that. Please, Lucina, will you trust me with this?"

Chrom took those words in. There must have been some kind of mistake. It sound like Robin was saying that he and Lucina were…

"Thank you." Robin smiled. He then hugged Lucina tightly, who hugged him right back. "And, if it makes you feel better, I'll keep my interactions with Morgan a little more public."

Lucina giggled at that remark. Chrom then watched in shock as the two seemed to pull in for a kiss.

Chrom's eyes went wide. No, this was not happening. His best friend and the future version of his daughter were not kissing behind a crate. However, he couldn't deny what he saw or heard.

Chrom began to fume, ready to topple every single crate on that stack on top of them. How dare they, how dare Robin go behind his back like this. Chrom began to take a step, not knowing what he was planning on doing, but knowing that it wasn't going to be pretty. However, he was stopped by someone grabbing his arm and pulling him away. He turned to see Sumia, who was fuming like him.

"Don't-you-dare." She hissed.

"Sum-" Chrom began to say before his wife pulled him away further.

Knowing his wife, Chrom simply let Sumia drag him off, leaving Robin and Lucina alone for now. However, first chance he got, he was going to give Robin a piece of his mind.

Sumia pushed Chrom into their tent, closed the flaps and turned to Chrom.

"You are not going to ruin that for them." said Sumia.

"Wait a minute, you knew?" Chrom asked indignantly.

"Yes, I knew." said Sumia. "I'm one of the ones who pushed Lucina to admit her feelings for Robin."

"One of the-hold on, who else knows about this?" Chrom asked.

"Chrom, please leave it be!" Sumia said.

"Absolutely not!" said Chrom. "My best friend has been doing gods knows what with OUR daughter and you want me to do nothing?"

"Yes!" said Sumia.

"Not a chance." said Chrom. "I am going to-"

"You are doing no such thing." Sumia interrupted.

"I didn't even say anything!" said Chrom.

"Yeah, we'll you're not doing anything that you're thinking about either." said Sumia.

"For Naga's sake, Sumia, do you even realize what you're saying?" Chrom asked.

"Yes, but clearly you don't." said Sumia. "Chrom, use your brain here. They both deserve this."

"What the hell does that mean?" Chrom asked.

"Think about it." said Sumia. "Your daughter, your frickin daughter, has literally been through hell and back. She literally had to come back in time to make sure nobody suffers the same way she and her friends did. For years, I doubt there have been days where she can honestly call herself happy, even back here. And now she has Robin, someone she loves. She's EARNED this."

"Yeah, but-" Chrom said.

"And think about Robin." said Sumia. "He has lost most of his memories and the ones he has recovered so far are pure tragedy. He needed to take a god damn trek across Valm to find himself. And, to add insult to injury, he ends up disappearing without a trace in the future. He's earned this too."

"Sumia." said Chrom.

"They have." said Sumia. "And you know what, if they end up breaking each others hearts, then we deal with that when it comes. But, please, Chrom, let them be."

"Maybe you're not seeing the same thing I am." said Chrom. "My best friend and OUR FUTURE DAUGHTER are in love!"

"And what's wrong with that?" Sumia asked. "THAT Lucina is a grown a woman and is capable of making her own decisions. And we still have our Lucina back in Ylisse, who we will happily raise and watch grow up. It's not like Robin is kissing our baby Lucina."

"In a manner of speaking, he is." said Chrom.

"Chrom, please." Said Sumia.

"How does this not bother you?" Chrom asked.

"I just told you." Said Sumia. "That is a different Lucina. A Lucina I love dearly, but a different Lucina nevertheless. And as her parents, we do not deserve to interrupt her happiness. We need to be there to support her when she needs us. You know this true."

Chrom wanted to say something. He was still angry, he was still feeling betrayed. However, in his heart, he knew Sumia had a point. He heaved a sigh and shook his head.

"Fine." said Chrom. "Fine, I won't interfere. However, I still want to talk to Robin about this later."

"Chrom." said Sumia.

"I'm not interfering." said Chrom. "I just want to talk to him. I have every right to do that. And please don't interrupt me when I do, understand?"

"As long as weapons don't get involved, I will leave you be." said Sumia.

"Ok." said Chrom. He then heaved a heavy sigh and started towards the tent entrance. "I'm gonna help finish setting up camp. I need to do something to distract me from this."

"You do that." said Sumia. "I'm going to help with the pegasi and horses. I was on my way to do that when I found you anyway."

"Ok." said Chrom.

The two then left their tent, Chrom mulling over what just happened.

It was mid afternoon and the camp was finally put together. Lucina walked the camp, seeing everyone get settled in, doing all of their preparations for the battle ahead. They planned on striking as soon as possible, so it was likely to happen in a couple of hours. Lucina was already ready for battle, her Falchion strapped tightly to her waist, ready to be drawn on a moments notice.

"Oh, Lucina." Someone called to her.

Lucina turned to see Maribelle walking towards her. Maribelle was holding a couple swords.

"I have a question." said Maribelle. "Which sword do you think is best for Donnel? Amos made a few lovely swords, but I daresay I don't know which one to use. Perhaps you could pick one for me?"

"Sure." said Lucina, removing swords from the pile Maribelle was holding. "Hm, I don't think this one would work, too big for him. This one is a bit too small. This one is bronze, a bit too weak to use. Oh, here we go."

Lucina pulled out a magnificently crafted Silver Sword. It was the perfect height and weight for someone like Donnel.

"Splendid." said Maribelle.

"I thought Donnel was sitting out the next battle." said Lucina.

"He is." said Maribelle. "However, I thought it might be a nice treat to have him do some training here. Stahl agreed to stay behind and train with him."

"Sounds nice." said Lucina.

"Would you care to join me when I give it to him?" Maribelle asked.

"Of course." said Lucina.

The two of them then walked to the infirmary. As they got closer, they could hear Donnel and Stahl talking inside.

"Do it, Donnel." They heard Stahl say. "We both know she's mad about you."

"Not yet." said Donnel. "Not with this. She'll just look at this and say 'If you think a ring with a fake stone is going to win me over, you're mad!"

"No she won't." said Stahl. "She knows you. Plus, the stone may not be real, but there is nothing fake about the way you love her."

"I know." said Donnel. "But I don't think she'd want to be seen married to a hick like me. I gotta make a name for myself first."

"You're already making a name for yourself." said Stahl. "You're in the Shepherds."

"I guess." said Donnel. "I still ain't exactly upper class material though."

Maribelle looked at Lucina and rolled her eyes. The two then entered the tent. Donnel had not noticed, but Stahl did. He turned pale as he saw Maribelle there, hands on her hips.

"What's wrong?" Donnel asked. "You look paler than I am."

"Ahem." said Maribelle.

Donnel turned and gasped in surprised.

"Oh. Maribelle." said Donnel. "How long…I mean…"

"Your portray of me is quite the princess." said Maribelle. "I can't say I'm flattered."

"N-no." said Donnel nervously. "That…I didn't…"

"May I see the ring?" Maribelle asked, walking up to the two and holding out her hand.

Donnel looked to Stahl, who smiled kindly and nodded. Donnel then reached into his pillow case and pulled out a ring. It was a simple gold ring with a small diamond on top of it.

"Here, ma'am." said Donnel.

Maribelle examined the ring. Lucina saw her smiling as she admired it.

"It's truly lovely." said Maribelle. "And you would give this to me?"

"The stone." Donnel muttered. "It ain't…it's fake."

"Donny, I would have married many worthless lords if that mattered to me." said Maribelle. "I'm not the sort to base her reply to a proposal on the ring's worth."

"Then, does that mean you're going to accept it?" Donnel asked.

"That depends." said Maribelle.

"On what?" Stahl asked.

Maribelle then handed the ring back to Donnel. She then held out her hand.

"Will you ask me properly?" Maribelle asked. "And to my face?"

"Course I will!" Donnel said eagerly. He then got on one knee and presented the ring. "Maribelle, will you do me the honor of being my wife?"

"Master Donnel, I would be delighted." said Maribelle.

Donnel then carefully placed the ring on Maribelle's finger, a huge grin on his face.

"Aw shucks." Donnel chuckled happily.

"Donnel?" Maribelle giggled. "One does not end a proposal by saying "aw shucks."

Donnel, Stahl, and Lucina laughed at this remark. Donnel and Maribelle then kissed and hugged each other tightly. Stahl joined in, happy for his good friends.

"I'll give you some time alone." said Lucina. "I think I've invaded this moment long enough."

There was no response as Lucina left the tent. She decided to sneak off the Robin's tent again. Once more, the tactician was fast asleep, though she knew he was going to woken up again in about an hour by Virion. Thinking it was safe, she nudged him awake again.

"Huzzat?" Robin said sleepily.

"Sorry." Lucina said. "It's me again."

"You alright?" Robin asked.

"Yeah." said Lucina. "I just wanted to join you, if that's alright."

"By all means." Robin said.

He then made room for her as they snuggled together in Robin's cot. Robin quickly closed his eyes again and drifted off to sleep. And though Lucina herself wasn't particularly tired, she closed her eyes too, smiling at being with the one she loved, much like how Donnel and Maribelle were now with each other.

"You're certain of this?" Excellus asked the Valmese scout.

"Yes sir." said the scout. "The Ylissean forces have made camp outside the capital in the forest. They are preparing for an attack."

"Perfect." said Excellus. "They are right on schedule. Send word to the dynasts."

"Yes sir." said the scout, who quickly departed from the room.

Excellus was talking with Cervantes in the great hall when the scout arrived with the news of the Ylissean forces. Now that they were here, it was time to bring Excellus' grand scheme to action.

"So, they are here at last, eh?" Cervantes asked.

"About time too." said Excellus. "Tya ha ha. The fools have no idea what they've just stepped into."

"Mmm, the anticipation before a battle." said Cervantes. "My hairs stand on end, every one of them! It'll make it difficult to brush, if I may say. But today's struggle will set the course of history, once and for all!"

"Struggle?" Excellus chortled. "I think you mean slaughter!"

"That's the spirit tactician!" Cervantes said gleefully, giving Excellus a heavy pat on the back.

"Wha-no!" said Excellus. "I just finished explaining this to you. *sigh* What is wrong with your ears? The Resistance will destroy itself, you and I needn't so much as lift a finger. I still have the dynasts in my clutches. After all, the Ylisseans don't know how persuasive I can be. Ha, ha ha! Oh it will be so lovely to watch as their former allies drive knives into their backs."

"Chives and flapjacks?" Cervantes asked, clearly not paying attention.

"Knives into backs." said Excellus, shaking his head.

"Oh, right right." said Cervantes. "Yes, I suppose there is some entertainment to that."

"The battle is won before it is even started." Excellus said proudly. "And without risking any further casualties either. Well, important casualties at least. Brilliant, if I do say so myself. I think it deserves some celebration. Tea, Cervantes? I have a wonderful stash of gray root-"

"Ah, yes, it is wonderful!" Cervantes interrupted. "Thank you, Excellus, my stache is truly grand, eh wot!"

"Not stache, stash!" Excellus barked. "As in the stash of…oh why do I bother? If only there were someone of my intellect to appreciate my talents."

"If that were the case." A mighty voice said to their right. "You would be amongst the peasants, Excellus."

The two turned to see their master approaching them. Judging by the expression on Walhart's face, he had been listening to their conversation. He looked over his right hand men and then met his gaze to Cervantes.

"Cervantes." Walhart barked.

"Y-yes, my master?" Cervantes asked.

"Who is the pinnacle of man?" Walhart asked. "The pinnacle in body, mind, and spirit? Who is greater than the gods?"

"Only you, my master." Cervantes said, bowing proudly.

"Well, Excellus." said Walhart, turning his attention to the tactician. "That seems to contradict your last statement. What say you?"

"M-my master!" Excellus said. "I assure you, I meant no offense! I only celebrate achievements in your service, master. To your glory!"

"My glory?" Walhart barked. "MY glory? Impudent fool! Glory is won on the battlefield! Glory is meeting your enemy's eyes and watching the hope drain away with his life. Glory is not won holed up in a castle with plots and cowardly schemes. And I'll be dead before I let some dynast farm lord take today's glory in my stead."

"Oh, why yes, of course!" said Excellus. "And so well put, my master, hya ha…I only meant that-"

However, Walhart had already turned away and left, leaving Excellus speechless. Cervantes then let out a hardy laugh.

"You find something amusing?" Excellus said bitterly.

"That I do!" Cervantes chuckled. "That sick mind of yours sees much, Excellus. That much is certain. But for someone so clever, you really can be quite daft."

Cervantes laughed some more as Excellus began to get angry. The red of the tactician's face nearly became the shade of his clothes.

"Excuse me?" Excellus said. "You DARE speak to me like that? I will not be spoken to like a child. Like an EQUAL!"

"Ta ha ha!" Cervantes laughed. "Your equal? No, fear not. I will never think of you as my equal, worm. Now, if you'll excuse me, I would shave and wax up before the fight. Enjoy your stash of tea."

Cervantes then walked away, leaving Excellus stunned and angry.

"Broom face twit!" Excellus said angrily to himself. "To hell with him. To hell with both of them!"

Excellus then took a deep breath and tried to calm himself down.

"Now, Excellus, keep your wits about you." He said. "They're all you have right now…besides your good looks. After all, this is an ample opportunity. Let Walhart charge ahead, the big stupid lobster. I'll end up on the winning side one way or another after all! Whee hee hee hee!"

With that, Excellus went to go fetch his tea and find a nice spot to relax. After all, there was no need to get his hands dirty for this battle.
