Clark returned from Inspector Henderson's looking almost guilty. He took a second to meet my eyes, which is never a good sign.

"Lois," He finally spoke before I could question him. "I have an exclusive for you."

"Oh?" I felt that questioning eyebrow start to rise. "It better be front-page worthy."

"How does 'Superman Finally Ties the Knot' sound time you?"

"WHAT!?"

"Lois," he quickly reacted, "just heat me out!"

"You better have one hell of an explanation for this Clark 'Kal-El' Kent." My nails were threatening to draw blood from my folded biceps. I couldn't contain my anger.

"Lois, this is the only thing I could think of that would get us in the middle of Mr. X syndicate without him realizing." Clark took off his hat plowing his fingers through his hair. "I don't think anything else will work."

"First off," I snapped, "who is 'we'?"

"Sargent O'Hara and Inspector Henderson," he listed, "and of course Superman."

"Sargent Helen J. O'Hara?"

"Yeah, I think so, why?"

"Oh no reason, apart from being a great cop she just so happens to be the current MISS METROPOLIS!"

"What does that have to do with what is happening?" He looked so confused.

"Nothing," I sighed. "It's just that Superman has never even looked at her so if he was going to marry anyone why can't he marry me?"

His lips tilted upwards and he tried to stifle a laugh, "Because Lois, you are widely known to be engaged to Clark Kent, a mild-mannered reporter for the Metropolis Daily Planet."

Suddenly I realized how ridiculous I had just been. "Clark, I am so sorry." I quickly rounded my desk to hug him.

"It's alright, Lois. I am used to being jealous of myself, but it was nice to see some jealousy from you."

"Clark, I love you, and that is for every part of you. I just couldn't fathom someone else having claim to you, real or fake."

"And I love you Lois, but we have to sell this wedding. Are you ready to help me catch a bad guy?"

"As long as you promise that Clark Kent comes home to me, I am willing to do whatever is necessary."

"I promise, Lois. That ALL of Clark Kent will be coming home to you."

"Well then, let's get started," I grinned.

"In an exclusive interview with Lois Lane," Perry White read. "Superman revealed his surprise marriage last night to Miss Helen J. O'Hara of the city. The newly wedded couple will reside at the bride's apartment on the 18th floor of the Beresford Arms."

Jimmy got excited, "Golly, this is the first time anybody will know where Superman lives."

"What of it?" Mr. White snapped.

"Well, I-I mean, if we keep the Beresford Arms under surv- Survei…llance—if we keep an eye on the Beresford Arms, we'll find out who Superman is."

That thought had really occurred to me, but Clark has never been that careless.

Perry White made that point more eloquently, "Obviously, he isn't gonna go in and out through the lobby. He'd use the window."

"Besides," I spoke up, "aren't the bride and groom entitled to a little privacy?" I tried to put on my most dejected pout. I knew I had to sell this to everyone in order for Clark's plan to really work. Most of the criminals in the circuit knew of Superman's affection toward me that it would really hard for them to see him with someone else, even if I am engaged.

"Why, of course, they are," the Chief agreed. "And incidentally, Miss Lane, you told the story of Superman's marriage very well indeed."

I bowed my head, "Thank you, Mr. White. At least he did me the courtesy of giving me the exclusive instead of Clark."

Jimmy tried to cheer me up, "Golly, you sure are lucky, Miss Lane, it's the scoop of the year."

"Yeah, I sure am lucky alright," I repeated sarcastically.

"What aren't you out working," Mr. White questioned the Cub Reporter.

"Well… I don't have any work to do," he said with a smile.

"Well go out and find something."

"Yes, sir. Yes. Right away," Jimmy coward, and got out of there as fast as he could.

Mr. White turned to address me, "I've always known how you've felt about Superman, Lois. I guess I hoped that your relationship with Clark had helped to rid you of those feeling but I know that one never really forgets their first love. I guess the news of his marriage hit you pretty hard." I tried to speak up but Mr. White continued, "I hope that you know that Clark is a good man, and much better suited to you than an alien that is always running into danger."

I channeled the Lois from two years ago that would've lashed out at the very idea that Superman even looked at another woman, and began to sob. Being sure that Mr. White would never get a chance to speculate about my upset I ran out of the room and straight to Clark's office.

Clark was on the phone with the angriest look I had ever seen on his face. "You bet your life I'll tell him and when I do you better duck for cover. He'll come over and tear your place down brick by brick."

Oh, dear Mr. X, you have fallen for the simplest trick in the book.

"You wouldn't dear harm Mrs. Superman," he snapped. "Hello? Hello!" Clark hung up just as the biggest smile crossed his face.

"He took the bait, Lois," Clark laughed. He sat back smugly with his hands behind his head, looking up at me with a twinkle of mischief. "Did you get the Chief to believe your performance?"

"So much so that he had to remind me that you are a better man than Superman, and I was getting the better deal in the end," I chuckled.

"Well it is good to know that the Chief is on my side," Clark countered.

"So, the trap is set," I asked, rounding the desk to sit in his lap. His arms came immediately around me to hold me close.

"Set, and sprung," he reassured. "Now I am positive he is going to try to come after you. You may be sent on a wild goose chase, but just go with it."

"I promise."

"I love you, Lois," he kissed my cheek. "but now it is your turn to await a call."

"Not nearly as much as I love you," I kissed him back. "Now let's save your wife."
