Chapter 37

Morgana lay on her makeshift bed, staring up at the dungeon's ceiling, the man in the other cell still yelling, she really wanted to cast a silence spell on him but she promised herself not to cause trouble, she had to be good, she was trying to change, Kara had given her the courage to change.

Her mind wandered back to Kara, she wondered if Arthur was treating her well, she couldn't imagine he wouldn't but Kara was now affiliated with her.

The door to her cell swung open and Gwen walked in with a plate and goblet in her hand

"Gwen" Morgana said with a smile

"Hello… Morgana" Gwen replied nervously "I brought you some dinner"

She handed the items to Morgana

"Thank you Gwen"

The maid turned to leave

"Please don't go just yet" Morgana put down the food and stepped towards Gwen

Gwen's brown eyes looked unsure but she turned, standing with hands clasped in front of her, Morgana didn't like the way she seemed to be uneasy around her but she understood and appreciate Gwen not just running away

"How are you? Have you been keeping well?" it was the only thing that Morgana could think to say

Gwen was quiet for a moment "I am well"

Her answer was short, but kind, Morgana wish she found it easier to talk to her, she had missed Gwen the most

"And your brother?" she asked, wanting just a little longer of Gwen's company

"Elyan is well too, he is a knight of Arthur's now" Gwen answered, a slight smile crossing her lips

Morgana smiled too at seeing the pride in Gwen's eyes

"You must be very happy for him, it is no small feat to become a knight"

Gwen's grin grew "I am proud and he is happy"

Morgana dropped her gaze "I am glad you and your brother are doing well, even after everything" her voice trailed off, she didn't want to bring up what she had done in the past but she also knew it was a subject she could not hide from

Gwen's smile faded "Indeed"

She turned to leave and Morgana's heart dropped slightly

"Why now?"

Gwen turned and looked at Morgana

"Why return now after all this time?" Gwen's eyes held hurt

Morgana exhaled, running a hand through her raven hair

"Kara" she responded after a moment "She reminded me of all I left behind and that it is never too late to try and do some good"

Silence fell in the chamber

"So you really came back to help?" the maid's voice was quiet

Morgana nodded "I have made a lot of mistakes Gwen and if Arthur decides my fate then I will accept it"

More silence

"Camelot is my home, I am just sorry that it took so long for me to remember that"

Gwen stepped forward quickly and wrapped her arms around Morgana, the sorceress slowly placed embraced the maid, her breathing unsteady, it had been years and Morgana couldn't hold back the tears anymore, she cried onto Gwen's shoulder

"Why did you leave?" Gwen asked moving back so she could look at Morgana

Confusion flashed in her green eyes

"He never told you, did he?"

Gwen shook her head "Who? Arthur?"

Realisation hit Morgana like a ton of bricks, Merlin had never told Gwen, a thousand questions filled her mind, if Gwen didn't know what Merlin had done then did Arthur, she had always assumed that it was on Arthur's order, she didn't think Merlin had the brains to try and kill her himself.

"Morgana?" Gwen was getting concerned by the look in her eyes

They locked eyes for a moment, Morgana could feel her anger rising, she released Gwen from her hold and took a couple of steps back

"Morgana what's going on? Are you okay?" Gwen allowed her the space she created but she did not leave

She could see Morgana's hands trembling slightly

"Morgana?"

The sorceress's jaw tightened, fists clenching, suddenly there was a spurt of fire in the corner of the cell, instantly the pair panicked and Morgana rushed instantly to put out the flames before the guards caught wind of it. She attempted to pat it out with a cloth but it burnt her hand, she bit her tongue to stop herself from crying out.

Gwen rushed forward with the goblet of water and threw it onto the flame, extinguishing it, she took a breath before turning to Morgana

"Your hand!" she exclaimed as she saw a nasty red blister growing on Morgana's pale skin

She moved forward to help but Morgana backed away

"I'm fine" she lied

She took a deep breath and moved her good hand over the wound, revealing that the wound was gone, it still stung but she knew there would be no lasting damage

"I'm sorry but I think it's best if you go now Gwen" She couldn't bring herself to look at the maiden "I do not want to keep you from your duties"

"Morgana"

"Please Gwen" she whispered as she collapsed onto her bed, bringing her knees up to her chest

Gwen watched her for a moment, it was clear that her magic was also tied to her emotion and something was plaguing her mind, something that had caused her to go all those years ago, something that Gwen hadn't been told and he was going to find out what it was.

"I will try to visit you again tomorrow" she said quietly but Morgana didn't respond

Gwen left the cell, she began to make her way through the castle's corridors, her mind on other things, she didn't even see Merlin until they collided together, the mountain of dirty boots in his arms falling to the floor

"Gwen" Merlin said in surprise "Sorry, I didn't see you"

He started to pick up the boots, looking back up at her when she didn't respond

"You okay?" he asked, standing, arms full once more

"I just came from seeing Morgana" she started

Merlin's face dropped a little "Ah right" his voice sounded deflated

"There is something she is keeping hidden, the reason that started her down the path"

"She hasn't told you it though?" Merlin asked

Gwen shook her head

"I got to go, Arthur is expecting these boots shined by morning"

And with that Merlin sped down the corridor and out of sight, Gwen watched him go, frowning slightly at the sudden exit.
