Chapter 32- Having Faith and Misunderstanding
Hope opened the last suitcase which revealed migraine headache medicine and various injections for diabetes. Hope watched as Charlie paced and stood up with Locke as the pop star walked away. "Are you following me?" Charlie asked when he noticed them.
Yes," Locke said.
"There's no need. I'm just going to the loo," Charlie said, pointing to the exit and using the British word for the bathroom.
"Is there something you want to tell us, Charlie?" Locke asked.
"I'm going to the loo," Charlie said slowly.
"It's dangerous out there. Until we get back to the beach, we're not breaking line of sight with you," Locke said.
"Bug off," Charlie said.
"I know who you are and I know what you're looking for. Drive Shaft. You played bass," Hope said.
"And guitar on a couple of tracks. You've really heard of us?" Charlie asked, smiling.
"Because I'm under 18 with a Roman Catholic upbringing doesn't mean I don't listen to music. My best friend Jordan has both your albums. Not my kind of music as I like boy bands like the Backstreet Boys and the occasional Celine Dion singing the theme from "Titanic." And your music gets played in the store or just flipping through the radio after I get done with homework and I want to listen to music," Hope said sitting back down.
"Although, I thought that your self-titled debut was a much stronger effort than Oil Change. It's a shame what happened to the band. How long since you played?" Locke asked.
"My guitar? Eight days, eleven hours. Give or take," Charlie said, doing mental calculating.
"Do you miss it?" Hope asked. Charlie nodded.
"Well, a lot of wreckage. It might still turn up," Locke said.
"Undamaged? Still playable? I don't think so. I wish, but there was this bloke at the counter who made me check it in," Charlie said.
"No," Locke said.
"Yeah. There wasn't enough room in the cabin, Fascist," Charlie said.
"You'll see it again," Locke said firmly.
"Oh, yeah? What makes you say that?" Charlie asked.
"Because I have faith, Charlie," Locke said.
"Yeah, well, guys. I'm stepping out for a minute. This place is wreaking havoc with my lungs," Hope said, stepping outside and taking a deep breath.
Ben-Ben, Kate, and Jack came up to Sayid who was chopping wood. Sayid looked at them. It's about time. I am dying of thirst," Sayid said as Kate gave him a bottle of water. They all sat down on the beach and Sayid told them about Jin beating Michael up for no good reason and Jack mentioned the caves.
"I think I'll let him sit in the sun awhile longer. Then I'll take his wife aside, find some way to communicate. I think she knows why he attacked Michael," Sayid said.
"You sure you don't want me, Dad, or Hope to try to talk to her?" Ben-Ben asked. Sayid nodded.
"Okay. If you've got that under control, I'm gonna start talking to people about the caves. I might be able to get a few to go with me before nightfall, start setting up camp," Jack said and he and Ben-Ben stood.
"You're serious? Is there a reason you didn't consult us when you decided to form your own civilization?" Sayid asked, sounding almost self-righteous to Ben-Ben.
"We're only talking about moving into the valley," Ben-Ben spoke up.
"Well, what happened to "live together, die alone?" Sayid asked.
"Digging in together is the only way we're gonna survive," Jack said.
"Our best hope of survival is in being spotted by a plane or a ship. And for that, we need to organize to keep that signal fire burning while others scout the island for supplies. Digging in anywhere else is suicide," Sayid said, standing up in a huff.
"It's the only source of fresh water we've found, Sayid," Kate said.
"And staying on the beach in the sun, without water, that's not suicide?" Ben-Ben asked, raising a dark eyebrow.
Sayid picked up his axe. "I am not going to admit defeat," Sayid said stonily and walked away.
"What a baby," Ben-Ben said, rolling his eyes.
Ben-Ben was picking up wood as Michael chopped it and Jack was going around talking to everyone on the beach. "Michael, are you sure you want to stay on the beach? We haven't seen a plane in days since we crashed," ben-Ben said, gripping the logs tightly in his arms.
"I'm positive. Oh, great. Look who came to chat," Michael said with a groan as Sun came into the clearing.
"I need to talk to you," Sun said in perfect English Ben-Ben and Michael stared at her in shock. She sounded as if she had spoken it all her life.
"You speak English?" They both asked at once.
"Yes," Sun said.
"Wait. You speak English? Why didn't you say anything?" Michael asked annoyed.
"My husband doesn't know," Sun said.
"Why would you learn English and not tell your husband. Hope speaks French and, yet she told me and Dad," Ben-Ben said calmly.
"He has a bad temper. What my husband did to you today, it was a misunderstanding," Sun said.
"No, I got it. Loud and clear," Michael said, annoying to even Ben-Ben.
"It was the watch," Sun said, indicating the gold watch on Michael's wrist.
"Your husband tried to murder me for a watch? I found this watch two days ago," Michael said, removing the expensive gold watch.
"It belongs to me father. Protecting that watch is a question of honor," Sun said pleadingly.
"You call trying to kill me in front of my kid honor?" Michael asked angrily.
"You don't know my father. I need your help," Sun said.
