During the night, Indy and Marion told Major Toht and Irma because Irma betrayed the Nazis and that her brother was now on Irma's side in the situation, they might not be welcomed back if they go back to Germany. So Indy and Marion decide to bring Major Toht and Irma to the United States until it was safe for them to return to their home country. Knowing it was for their own good, the siblings agreed to reside in America.

After getting their things from the U-boat, Major Toht and Irma joined Indy and Marion on the Bantu Wind after the Ark was loaded on there as everyone headed their way to the United States.

A little over a day later, the Bantu Wind reaches the United States. Though Major Toht and Irma weren't told yet since the two were in their room spending time with each other since the past few days were very rough. At the moment, the two were sitting on the floor playing a game of chess since they found a box of the game sitting in the boat earlier in the day.

"Checkmate!" cried Irma, as she makes the killer move.

"Ach, nein!" said Major Toht.

Irma giggled.

"How did you beat me, Irma...?" Major Toht asked.

"I do not know..." said Irma, shrugging. "I just did."

She thinks of the many times she won a game of chess as she says, "I'm just very good at games, huh?"

"You really are," said Major Toht. "You know, I-"

Just then, Indy walked to the door of Major Toht and Irma's room and peaked inside to tell them that the Bantu Wind had finally reached America.

"Major Toht? Irma?" Indy said. "We've arrived in America."

Irma stands up and puts her hands up as she says, happily, "Finally! I am free!"

She runs to the door as she cried, "I'm freeeeeeeeee!"

"Irma, vait a minute!" said Major Toht, putting the chess game away.

"Yes Arnold?" Irma said, looking at him.

"Put your coat on and get your stuff first," said Major Toht. "You do not vant to leave zhem behind."

"Oh right..." said Irma. "Okay Arnold."

Major Toht and Irma put their coats on and gather their things and they got off the tramp steamer with Indy and Marion. But before they can do anything else, since they were in Washington D.C., Indy had a quick meeting in one of the buildings with the same two US Army intelligence men that he spoke with at Marshall College when Indy was hired by the government to find the Ark of the Covenant. And while that was going on, Marion, Major Toht, and Irma were waiting in the lobby until Indy was done.

"When vill Dr. Jones be done vith his meeting?" Irma asked. "It's been a while…"

"Oh, it hasn't been that long, Irma," Marion said. "It's been only five minutes."

"Seems like hours…" said Irma. "Just sitting here doing nothing…"

"Try not to think about it, Irma," said Major Toht. "Keep yourself busy for now."

"But how can I?" asked Irma. "I only brought so much on our mission…"

"You can write in zhis," said Major Toht, giving Irma her diary back after pulling it out of his bag.

"My diary!" said Irma, happily as she accepted it. "Oh wow, I thought it vas gone forever!"

She looked through the pages and said, "Oh good, zhe pages are still here! They're not damaged!"

She looks up at Major Toht and said, "Thank you, Arnold. I knew you vould respect my things after all."

"I didn't vant to destroy it," said Major Toht. "Despite how mad I was about vhat happened, I did not vant to make it worse for you."

"You…You didn't?" said Irma.

"I couldn't do it," said Major Toht. "Just like how I couldn't kill you. I just could not do it…"

"Because of vhat Dr. Jones and Marion said?" Irma said.

"Ja…" said Major Toht, with a nod. "It hit me hard…It made me realize vhat I did to you all zhese years and how they affected you. Irma, I really didn't vant you to suffer anymore…"

He sighed sadly and said, "I wish I had listened to you…I should have been there for you…It vas my job to protect you and say zhat everything vas going to be okay…But zhe Nazi mind got the best of me…"

Major Toht started to cry as he said, "I never vanted to hurt you, Irma…! You're my baby sister…!"

Irma felt sad that her brother was sad. She frowned as she gave him a warm hug.

"I knew you never meant to hurt me, Arnold…" said Irma, while hugging her brother. "But you had to do vhat zhe Nazis said…"

"Wish I didn't…" said Major Toht, with tears in her eyes. "But I vas forced against my will to be a Nazi..."

"I vas too…." said Irma, wiping her brother's tears with the handkerchief from his suit's blazer. "It vas a scary time…For the both of us…But now, we are out of there. We are no longer part of the Nazi Party. We escaped."

She looked at Major Toht and said, as she broke away, "We're free, Arnold…We don't need to be scared anymore…"

Major Toht started to calm himself down a little and said, "You're right, Irma…We should not be afraid…We should be happy."

"Exactly," said Irma, nodding her head. "Especially that ve are finally here in America…Together…We may not be in Germany right now, but at least we brother and sister are vith each other…Vonce again."

Major Toht smiled and hugged his sister, while Irma hugged him in return.

Just then, Indy finally came into the lobby after finishing his meeting.

"Hey guys, I'm back," said Indy.

"Dr. Jones!" said Irma, getting up and running over to Indy. "Vhat did they say?"

"I have good news and bad news," said Indy.

"Start with the bad news first," said Marion, "then get to the good part."

"Sure," said Indy, then turning to everyone and saying, "Now the bad news is…They at first didn't want to put the Ark in the museum as promised. They wanted "top men" to look it over…"

"Top men?" said Irma.

"They wouldn't tell me what that meant, Irma," said Indy. "But…the good news is...I found a way to convince them to put it in the museum."

"How?" asked Major Toht.

"I told them about the mission we just went on," said Indy.

"Did you tell them that you were the one who found it?" asked Marion.

"No I didn't," said Indy. "I did not find the lost Ark."

"Then who did?" asked Marion. "The Nazis, right?"

"A former Nazi," said Indy, then putting his hand out to Irma.

"M…Me?" said Irma, a bit surprised as she pointed to herself.

"Yes Irma," said Indy. "You."

"I found the lost Ark?" said Irma.

"Don't you remember?" Major Toht said to his sister. "You got zhe medallion und staff and found the location of zhe Ark's resting place."

"I do not recall that…" said Irma, forgetting for a moment.

"You went down into zhe Vell of Souls and found the Ark in a secret chamber?" said Major Toht, trying to get his sister to remember that moment while in Tanis back in Egypt.

"I did?" said Irma, then starting to remember and saying, "Oh yes, I remember now! Zhat place vas full of snakes!"

"But you managed to find it," said Major Toht.

"You're right, I did," said Irma.

"Irma told me about it while we were on the Bantu Wind heading for here," Indy said to Major Toht. "So I knew I had to give her proper credit and tell the government officials that she found the Ark of the Covenant."

"How did they react vhen you told them that my sister was a Nazi, Dr. Jones?" asked Major Toht.

"They didn't like that," said Indy, "which I understand since the Nazis are bad people for their hate crimes."

He then said to Irma, "But I told them what you've been through based on what you told Marion and I while at the Nazi base. They didn't want to hear about the Nazism in you, Irma…I'm sure no one would…But they did show some sympathy because of how you felt about it and disagreed with the Nazis' beliefs..."

Indy gave Irma a hug as he said, "You're a good girl, Irma…I knew you were…"

"Vhy…Thank you very much, Dr. Jones," said Irma. "Zhat means a lot to me…"

"And thank you for finding the Ark for us, Irma," said Marion. "I thought we never would."

"You're very welcome, Marion," said Irma, then remembering something. "Oh! Here…"

Irma puts her hand in her coat's pocket and pulls out the medallion. She then places it in Marion's hand and the German woman apologizes for stealing it.

"Zhis should have been vith you the whole time," said Irma, with remorse. "Es tut mir wirklich leid…"

Since Irma apologized in German, Marion wasn't able to understand it.

"She said she's really sorry for stealing your medallion, Marion," said Major Toht.

"It's alright, Irma, I forgive you," Marion said to Irma. "I know you wanted to make the Nazis proud. You didn't mean to make me upset…"

Irma nodded her head sadly.

"Come on, cheer up, Irma," said Major Toht, putting his hands on Irma's shoulders. "I don't vant to see you sad anymore…"

"But now zhat we're away from our home country," said Irma, "vhere are we going to stay? We don't have a place to live…"

"You and your brother can stay with me until you get jobs and buy your own house," said Indy. "I have a guest room for visitors."

"Oh!" said Irma. "Ve would love to stay at your house, Dr. Jones. Thank you."

"Dr. Jones?" Major Toht said to Indy.

"Yes Major Toht?" said Dr. Jones.

"Can you not call me by Major Toht anymore?" asked Major Toht.

"But aren't you a Nazi Major, though?" Indy asked.

"Not anymore," said Major Toht. "I agree vith my little sister now. Vhat zhe Nazis did to her and I wasn't right. And I vant to be there for her just like you and Marion said. She needs her big brother…"

Irma smiles.

"So what do you want Marion and I to call you for now on?" asked Indy.

"By my first name," said Major Toht.

"What is it again?" asked Marion.

"Arnold," said Major Toht. "But you can still call me by just Toht. Just take the Nazism out of me, if you don't mind…"

"No problem," said Indy, then looking at the clock and said, "Oh! Look at the time. We better get going."

"What for?" asked Marion.

"I got to take Irma and Toht to the courthouse so they can apply to become American citizens," said Indy.

"Oh right," said Marion. "Sure, go ahead. I'll see you later."

"Thanks Marion," said Indy, then saying to Major Toht and Irma, "Let's go, you two."

"Coming," said Major Toht.

"Arnold?" said Irma, looking up at her brother.

"Yes Irma?" said Major Toht.

Irma puts her arm out to her brother. Major Toht smiles and wraps his arm around Irma's shoulders as the two started to follow Indy out of the building. And once they applied to become US citizens, Indy drove them back to his house since that is where the siblings will stay in for now.
